Re: Nintendo Switch Lacks A Web Browser Because It's A "Dedicated Video Game Platform"

Gorlokk

I don't understand why Nintendo is trimming features with every console since the 3DS. It had all these features, like a music player (which had a lot of neat features to play with), a photo viewer that you could add pictures from your computer, download through the 3DS browser, and of course take 3D pictures. And it had the browser too, as previously mentioned.

The Wii U got rid of the music player and photo viewer, which was understandable, but still a little sad. It did make up for this with the best console browser to date.

Now it doesn't seem like the Switch will have any of these. It has a screenshot gallery, and since it takes SD cards you could probably put images on the Switch if you wanted, but no music player and no internet browser.

I get that it's a game console first and foremost, and that is a good thing. But I see no reason to trim away these features. I used my 3DS as my music player for a long time, from 2012-2015. Before that, I used my PSP.

...And by the way, someone mentioned this above, but the PSP really was an incredible console AND media device. The browser wasn't very good, but you could download images AND music from the web. The PSP photo viewer is, imo, the best photo viewer for any console, portable or not, and you could even set any image as your wallpaper. And you can't forget about custom themes for PSP that you could download with ease and even make yourself! Oh wait, you could download videos too! I forgot about that. The video player on the PSP was also surprisingly good!

It's important that the Switch be a game console first and foremost, but these extra features can actually make a big difference for some people. Sure, there might have been better music players than PSPs back then, but remember that you could play quality games on it too, with GOOD controls. The fact that the Switch is, or at least can be a fully portable system, means that not having these nifty features is actually really sad.

Long live the PSP, the ultimate console and media device hybrid.

@SanderEvers
Keep it to yourself? Are you kidding me? Do you have any idea how much time and effort it takes to make a fan game, let alone any game? I mean I won't deny that some fan games spill the beans about development too early, allowing a C&D before it's even released by themselves, but for goodness sakes man, that's just silly!

And like someone else said, dev kits cost money man. Most fan games don't really have any budget at all, so it's not like they're pourings thousands of dollars into the game that could go towards a dev kit.

Re: Capcom Admits Monster Hunter Stories Performed Below Expectations

Slightly off topic, but I finished Resident Evil 7 recently and was pleasantly surprised. That game is actually amazing, a true return to roots. I really hope that Capcom does end up porting it to the Switch eventually. Nintendo fans that enjoyed the Resident Evil 2 on N64 and Resident Evil on GameCube will really enjoy it, I think. And actually, as a BIG fan of RE4, fans of that would probably enjoy RE7, too.

Also, for the record, I did NOT think I would enjoy RE7, especially when it was first revealed. You could probably find me saying that if you looked through my comments... I think I'll sneak a peek myself.

Re: Kimishima on the Role of the 3DS After the Switch Launch

Gorlokk

I don't really believe that the 3DS will continue to receive big first party titles for more than a year after the Switch launch, but I can say that if it DOES, I will be EXTREMELY disappointed. Right now, with third party support still very iffy on Switch, the main thing it has going for it is that at least it will (or at least should) get Nintendo's full development attention.

Re: Poll: What Are Your Nintendo Switch Pre-Order and Launch Day Plans?

Gorlokk

I went to three stores earlier this week trying to pre-order and they were all 'sold out'. I don't know why Nintendo thinks it's okay to let stores 'sell out' of pre orders but I'm getting really sick if it.

I'm not getting a Switch at launch anymore. I was able to use my Switch money to buy the Uncharted PS4 bundle and Resident Evil 4 and it was cheaper than it would have been to get a Switch and just Zelda.

Re: Airplane Mode Symbol Spotted In Nintendo Switch UI, Sets Tongues Wagging

Gorlokk

Okay sort of off topic, but are we getting an internet browser? That was a feature that was cool on both the 3DS and Wii U, but perhaps not the most optimal set up, in that neither really supported videos and were a little wonky in general. I'd like to think that since this portable, Nintendo would see the potential in it... I mean it makes more sense considering they've had it on handhelds and home consoles in the past, and now the Switch is a true combination of both.

@redd214
Okay, I just looked at the PS4 launch line-up again and you're right, as far as variety goes, it really does cover a much bigger audience, and there's a bigger quantity of games as well.

It was wrong for me to call it abysmal (though I was exaggerating to begin with), HOWEVER, I still don't think it's anything to write home about. When I think of the PS4 launch off the top of my head, or really most console launches, I think of the exclusives. In that regards, I'm pretty sure Knack or Killzone didn't set anyone's world on fire. And then the rest of the titles were just multiplats.

Re: Guide: A Breakdown of Confirmed Nintendo Switch Games and Release Dates

Real talk for a moment here. After the presentation, my friends and I looked into past console launch line-ups. Guess what? They all suck. I'm serious, there were only like, two actually GOOD launch line-ups in history, those being Super Nintendo and Xbox 360. Launch line-ups have, generally speaking, NEVER been impressive. And actually, getting Breath of the Wild at launch is crazy to me after I looked at the other console launches.

I'm not trying to just blindly defend the Switch because it already looks like it has a few problems. But the launch is nothing to make a fuss about. The PS4 launch was abysmal, but look at it now.

On a side not, I think I'll try to actually pick up that Bomberman game. It's kind of a really nice surprise! I mean, Konami making a game of a dead IP that looks good? And it's a launch title for a new console? I'm kinda blown away honestly.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Nintendo Switch Presentation?

Gorlokk

The presentation itself was somewhat poor, and will certainly not grab the attention of the public the way the first look at the Switch did.

That said, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Shin Megami Tensei, and Breath of the Wild. Wow, wow, wow! That's five guaranteed top-shelf games, already half the size of my Wii U library and the system isn't even out yet. Granted, SMT and Xenoblade are a bit aways, but still.

Oh, and we can't forget that Travis Touchdown is coming back!

Re: Hopes for Mother 3 On Nintendo Switch Boosted by 1-UP Studio Facebook Post

Gorlokk

Okay, so I mean, I get why some people would think that bringing an article up like this is grasping at straws, but I have to wonder if it would be reported if not for the rumors around Mother 3 for the past few months. Like, I feel that this is worthy of bringing to people's attentions in this scenario since Mother 3 has a lot of talk about it at the moment. If we had not heard anything regarding Mother 3 for years (no JP VC release, no rumors, no E32014 Mother 3 joke, etc) then I would see this as grasping. But I feel like everything's been leading up to a Mother 3 release for a bit now.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch VR May Have High-Profile Support from Capcom

Gorlokk

I hope it's true too. Honestly, as a long time Resident Evil fan, RE7 has me a bit worried, but at the same time incredibly curious. I feel like I'm either going to hate it, or it's going to really surprise me. I have to keep in mind that Resident Evil 4 was a drastic change for the series too, and how that game ended up being a masterpiece. It's just that this game doesn't look anything like a RE game, like really in no way. Even though RE4 changed the formula up immensely, it is still undeniably a RE game.

Re: Fan-Made Pokémon Prism Game Leaks Online After Nintendo Shutdown Notice

Gorlokk

Dear lord, I know I've already commented this but I simply do not understand the people attacking this game and other fan projects. I get defending Nintendo's right to do this, but it's never just that. It's always something like "Nintendo has to protect their IP from filthy thieves like these!" or "Oh my God, can't you stupid devs do ANYTHING original?!"

On their own, comments like these wouldn't be very surprising considering this is NintendoLife, but the worst part is how they seem to reflect the majority opinion with the amount of likes they get. I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks fan games are evil and adamantly defend Nintendo like they're a friend has to be a child or a teen. I can't fathom any adults taking that position, I just can't.

Re: Nintendo Shuts Down Another Pokémon Fan Project

Gorlokk

I'm so sick of Nintendo white knights defending this kind of stuff. It is a free rom hack of a game. A rom hack! A creation of love given out for free! And I get it, it's just what Nintendo does; It can't be helped. But the amount of people that adamantly defend Nintendo like this company is their friend, and that these developers are BAD people blows my mind.

Re: Review: Super Mario Run (Mobile)

Gorlokk

$10 doesn't seem that bad to me honestly. Like, yeah, it's definitely more than the average phone game, but what's interesting to me is that I never really saw people complain about the price of retail 3DS/Wii U Mario games (I'm referring specifically to New Super Mario Bros. games). I think $40 for NSMB2 and $50 or $60 for NSMBU (At launch) is pretty ridiculous myself, so in that light $10 doesn't seem that bad to me.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Power Debate is Back - Report Suggests It Won't Quite Match PS4

Gorlokk

I don't generally care too much for console multiplatform titles as you can usually get the best experience on PC anyway. However, in Nintendo's case, they are offering a console/portable hybrid. With this in mind, any multiplat title, assuming it still runs well, has something that no other console or PC can offer.

I personally enjoy dreaming of a world where games like Persona 5, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Resident Evil 2 Remake, etc come to Switch, not only because I'm a fan of those franchises as well as Nintendo, but because any game on the Switch is offering a novel way to play that is neither incredibly gimmicky or available on other platforms. This is why, now more than ever, I think that having a good amount of power to satisfy third party developers would be an amazing benefit to Nintendo, Nintendo fans, and anyone who buys a Switch.

Whenever I think of a possible future where the Switch gets good or even great third party support, I get a little bummed out because it's just not very likely. But there is one positive aspect to the Switch that I think will make it remain appealing to Nintendo fans: a console that gets all of Nintendo's attention. Developers will finally no longer be split up by handhelds and consoles (well, aside from the first year or so).

Not only that, but we'll get to see some handheld franchises in HD (the first for some), such as Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, Pokemon (and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon), among others. I think it's also safe to assume that the Switch will retain the smaller Japanese third party developers that were on the 3DS, unless they move to Vita and enjoy selling two copies.

The Switch doesn't need incredible power to be a good or even a great console. As it is, it already has the makings of a very good Nintendo-only console. But if it is powerful enough to keep third party developers on board for the long run, it could very well be the best Nintendo console ever.
