Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

Flipbot

@Shellcore Then I guess I missed your point. Either way, I’ll argue that $60 is the average price for any digital AAA game. This might not officially be Starfox, but it might as well be. I don’t know exactly how many hours are in any of the Starfox games, but they are definitely not as long as any Zelda game. Starfox 64 was shocking short, but it stands as one of my favorite 3ds games right along with Ocarina of Time. I bought both games day one for the same price.
I understand you’re sentiment about the toys to life business model, and I agree with you on that. But the digital offer seems to circumvent the greedy model that all toys to life games follow, and offers the game all digital with most of the extras for the price of a standard Nintendo game. That’s the first toys to life game that I’ve seen that with. I think that’s pretty generous. More likely, they just realized how desirable this game will be to adults who don’t want to buy all the toys. Either way, yes I think the standard digital is a good value, at least for what I want from this game.

Edit: Here in the US, $60 is the price of Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey. Same price as standard digital Starlink. If you add the expansion pass to Zelda, it’s $80. Same as deluxe Starlink. It seems the price pattern for digital Starlink in the UK is a bit higher when comparing to other games.

Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

Flipbot

@Shellcore Actually, based on information I got from the eshop, the standard digital gives you 5 ships, I think 7 pilots and 12 weapons. The deluxe only gives you one extra ship, a few extra pilots, and a few extra weapons. Based on this, in my opinion, the standard offers the best value if you want alot of the extras, but don’t care about having everything. I think that’s the one I will end up going with, and I’ll put the extra $20 towards upgrading my micro sd. Otherwise, if it weren’t for all those extras that come with the standard digital, then I would agree with you that the physical standard would be the better deal.

Re: Review: Starlink: Battle For Atlas - A Shining Example Of Open World Star Fox Done Right

Flipbot

@Shellcore
You do realize that if you plan on buying physical all the extra ships, pilots and weapons that come with the deluxe digital, it’s going to set you back more than double the cost of the starter pack. Just one extra ship with a pilot is something like $20. That is why I’ve decided to buy digital. Access to all of the things I will actually use and play with cheaper than buying a bunch of large toys that will sit in a box under the bed.

Re: Starlink: Battle For Atlas Physical Release Will Require A 6GB Day One Update

Flipbot

I’m still not sure if I want to buy the physical just to save that extra 6gb, now. I’m not too much into the toys to life concept, but the ships did look kind of cool in the demos. But if the production sets just end up looking like dollar tree toys, I think the better option may end up being the standard digital. Not only is it $15 cheaper, but you get a bunch of extra ships and pilots and weapons, that you would otherwise have to buy.

Re: Nintendo Download: 11th October (North America)

Flipbot

Starlink for me. So glad I won’t have to give up 15 gb of space with physical. What is it, 6 gb with the Starfox patch? Not great, but not as bad as I thought. I was still going to get it even when I thought it was 15gb, so finding out it was less than half of that made me happy. I think I can hold off till Black Friday to upgrade my sd card now.

Re: Random: Katamari Director Wasn't Impressed With Mario Or Zelda On Switch

Flipbot

I’m excited about getting Katamari for Switch. I’ve been wanting it for Nintendo since the Wiiu came out. I could understand if Mario or Zelda just isn’t his thing. But his blatant criticism seems a little pretentious considering the simple goal in each iteration of Katamari is exactly the same. Katamari is fun and funny, but there really isn’t much to it. As for many people’s preferences, I think some people may not be too into open ended exploration in games, and prefer more immediate and clearly defined goals. There seems to be alot of that difference in discussions comparing Odyssey to the more linear Galaxy/World. And BotW to past Zelda games. It may even have to do with two very different cognitive styles. But as much as I liked Galaxy 1&2, 3d World is fun for multiplayer, I prefer Odyssey. And BotW is my favorite Zelda. Who cares if there is a gap between story and system? I can’t think of single Zelda title where this wasn’t the case. In every Zelda game, the whole world of Hyrule is facing imminent apocalypse with Link as the one and only hope, and yet there’s always plenty of time for Link to sit around a fishing pond, or play cute little carnival games. It doesn’t make sense because it’s a game, and games are meant to be fun. Katamari doesn’t make any sense either. It’s just fun.

Re: Sony Responds To Nintendo's Success With Its Very Own PlayStation Classic Mini Console

Flipbot

Don’t need this. I still have a the actual original ps1 mini that plays cds, and a fold up lcd screen attached. I know I can’t attach through hdmi, but I really wouldn’t want too. The games still look ok on the old little screen, but on an hd tv or monitor, not so good. Besides, I plan on getting at least a couple of my favorite final fantasty games on switch, so...not really needing this for $100. Rather get some more games on my switch.

Re: Guide: Everything Announced In Yesterday's Nintendo Direct

Flipbot

Well, every direct gets a downpour of criticism. But I’m happy with this one. There are more games that I want coming out than I can afford to buy or have time to play. I wish people would calm down about ports. If I had my way, every game I have ever loved would be available on Switch. Ports are basically our virtual console. I don’t hear a lot of complaints about the size of the Playstation store’s classic section, but man, Nintendo finally gives us a few Final Fantasy titles which are long overdue, a Mario port and Katamari remaster( I’m very happy about), and people are prophesying doom for Nintendo. Also Nintendo finally is opening the doors a bit wider for indie developers and third parties. Sure, we’re going to get some shovel ware with that. But do we really want to go back to the Wiiu days when nothing was coming in for a good long while, and no third parties were interested, and few indies were allowed? Some really great titles get missed if you close the doors just because you want the store to be completely sanitized of shovelware.

Re: Fox McCloud Won't Be Flying Solo In Ubisoft's Starlink: Battle For Atlas

Flipbot

@thesilverbrick
Just get a 16 GB card just for Starlink. They’re cheap now. I originally thought the same thing as you. And even though I eventually want to upgrade my card, I don’t want or need to do it now. However I do still have an extra 16 GB card. I just keep it as an extra for my drone. The cost on them keeps going down. That’s why I want to wait to upgrade my main card. It will be a much cheaper by the time I need one. I may still keep Starlink on its own, though. 15 GB is huge for a Nintendo game, especially for a physical release.

Re: Team Cherry Changes Title Of Final Hollow Knight Content Pack Due To Name Clash

Flipbot

@FarkyValentine That does happen every so often in this game. But it does get less frustrating later on with more of the map unlocked. One strategy I’ve come up with is to try not to accumulate too much while exploring new areas. Backtrack and spend before you go. Then once you already know the area and have found a bench, or stag station, you could always go back again to get more geo before exploring too far ahead. Eventually, though, geo gets easier to obtain, and revealing new areas gets to be more interesting than worrying about lost geo. The more benches and stag stations you find, it gets easier to strategize how and when to approach new areas.

Re: Get Your Buzz On With Bee Simulator, A Brand New Game Coming To Switch

Flipbot

When I saw this game, it immediately reminded me of a scene from an Epcot ride called “Spaceship Earth”. It’s theme was the history of human communication. When I was a kid, my favorite scene of the ride was during an interpretation of the future. The scene was supposed to be a classroom in the future. It was darkened, so the the only thing you could see well besides some silhouettes was a giant screen. On the screen, the kids and teacher were apparently engaged in some collaborative interactive simulation. The teacher guided the kids to make various spaceships and environments. Then one kid had the idea to make the ship into a bee, and immediately the ship transformed into bee. And the other kids started transforming it’s environment into a nature scene. That scene looked a lot like this game. Spaceship earth no longer has this version of the future part of the ride anymore. It’s too bad, though. It was really cool.

Re: Hori's Mario And Zelda Themed D-Pad Joy-Con Limited To Handheld Mode Arrives Locally This September

Flipbot

@HobbitGamer I don’t have the hori, but I have a shell mod d-pad. The only multiplayer game that I use multiple joycons for is Mario Kart. But even for games that require more button inputs than MK8, using the d-pad is actually fine. It still registers individual inputs. But using separate buttons as a d-pad is by contrast more difficult for certain games. I have never regretted putting a d-pad on my Switch.

Re: Hori's D-Pad Joy-Con Controllers Are Eating Up That Precious Switch Battery Life

Flipbot

@Dualmask I don’t play too many fighting games these days, but I have a few 2-d platformers and I definitely prefer using my d-pad on those over buttons. I have used the buttons, and it’s fine for side to side movements, but it’s really hard to do diagnals quickly. You’re thumb moves over the directions more fluidly, too. The d-pad still works just fine for menu inputs. And the only time I use all of my joycons for multiplayer is in Mario Kart. Since you only use one button besides the triggers, the d-pad is fine.

Re: Hori's D-Pad Joy-Con Controllers Are Eating Up That Precious Switch Battery Life

Flipbot

@Azathoth I don’t know how to compare it with the Hori d-pad, since I don’t have one. But I do have 8-bitdo controllers which have rocker d-pads. I do know what you mean, there is a slight difference. But honestly, I’ve been using the d-pad on my joycon for so long now that I hardly ever have any problems with it. Maybe I’ve gotten used to it and automatically know how to compensate, but I don’t feel a significant difference in how well I play on portable vs. with my 8bitdo. And you’re right that both d-pads work way better than buttons. Buttons may be fine for a slow easy platformer like Kirby. But not the best for Celeste or Hollow Knight.

Re: Hori's D-Pad Joy-Con Controllers Are Eating Up That Precious Switch Battery Life

Flipbot

@jobvd No cutting. Just unscrewing and lots of little parts that come out and undoing and redoing tiny ribbon cables. It just takes paying attention and doing things carefully. There is a possibility of damaging the new shells if you’re not careful with the screws. But that shouldn’t hurt the joycons themselves and you could potentially put the old shells right back on.

Re: Video: Here's A Look At The Mega Man: Fully Charged Animated Series

Flipbot

They should have got the team who made the 2003 Astro Boy series. Or at least took some inspiration from them. They knew how to make a cartoon that was visually appealing, stayed true to the source designs, and draw interest from both children and older fans. This looks like every other cheap cg cartoon on tv. The kids that will be interested in this are too young to play megaman. If they try, they will be deeply frustrated.

Re: Review: VSR: Void Space Racing (Switch eShop)

Flipbot

About Kylo Ren? Death count’s pretty high on him. The hero contemplating killing him? Why not? Contemplating in one instant is not an attempt, no matter how Kylo spun the story. About Rey? Meh, personal preferences. Luke being a complainer? Watch episodes 4-6 again and count how many times Luke whines, complains or says something pessimistically self defeating. You go ahead. Watch them.

Re: Review: VSR: Void Space Racing (Switch eShop)

Flipbot

@Heavyarms55
When was Luke ever not a whiny weakling crybaby? Not saying I don’t like Luke. Liked him in episode 8 too, but he’s a pessimistic complainer. That’s just him. Besides, it wasn’t just his nephew. It was the worst future Hitler the galaxy has ever seen. I’d have contemplated the same deed in his shoes. Also, I like Rey.

Re: Random: Nintendo Switch Is Getting Its Own VR-Style Headset, But There's A Catch

Flipbot

@BlueformFactor
Real life and VR both works like 3-d glasses. The concept of all 3 involve putting 2 2-d images that are from slightly different viewpoints into each eye separately. You’re brain does the rest of the work of making it into one coherent 3-d image. You can use VR with only one eye, but then the imagery wouldn’t be in stereoscopic 3-d. Same is true if you lose an eye. You lose binocular vision. That’s why people who lose an eye have poor depth perception.

Re: Random: Nintendo Switch Is Getting Its Own VR-Style Headset, But There's A Catch

Flipbot

@bydavidrosen
But what you seem to be describing is an actual VR headset. Even mobile VR works by splitting the display into 2 images so you can process it as 3-d imagery. When it’s done that way, it works great. But this article doesn’t lead me to believe that this headset is capable of doing that. I imagine it must have some kind of lens to change your plain of focus, just like vr lenses would. But if you only see one image through the display, it won’t be the same experience as any other type of even the cheapest and most basic vr. And if it does split it, the aspect ratio of your game environment would change. I think games that are designed for vr kind of have to be designed with that in mind. It’s not like you can just drop into a game like BotW and have it look and play the same.

Re: Review: Lumines Remastered (Switch eShop)

Flipbot

I’m so glad this version includes a puzzle mode. That was a nice surprise, although I haven’t had a chance to try that one yet. I also had to turn off the rumble after a while. It was neat at first, but then later was distracting and annoying. Still now the best way to play lumines ever. I’m so happy to have this on my switch.

Re: Switch Hackers Are Now Forcing Adult-Themed Imagery Into Super Mario Odyssey

Flipbot

@Razzy
Look I know how touchy everyone gets when it comes to internet censorship, but if someone were to run around town flashing their bits at people, it would be worse than just offensive. But if people intentionally throw crap like this at people online, especially in places populated by a majority of children, it’s just considered prankster stuff. Enough, already. If they are adults they should get jail time.

Re: Random: This 'Joy Boy' Hardware Concept Could Be The Virtual Console Solution We Need

Flipbot

Cute concept, but obviously isn’t necessary and really won’t even work well as a novelty.
One reason, no d-pad is still a problem. Those who have already solved the d-pad issue will have even bigger problem, as the buttons are utilized as your d-pad. Shoulder buttons are inaccessible, making most snes games unplayable. For the same size and price you can grab gba micro on ebay, which has a d-pad and fully functional for snes and other 32 bit games. Or, if these games come to switch anyway, well you could just use your switch and not have to buy or carry anything extra.

Re: Splatoon 2 Hackers Are Forcing Unreleased Content Onto Other Players

Flipbot

I just started playing this, so I’m not at an extemely high level, but I’m pretty consistently good for my level. Last night I played a game that was very fishy. There was a team of low level players that I kept getting matched against in turf. They were very low and yet they seemed to have access to skills, weapons and immunity that shouldn’t be available to such low levels. Maybe I’m just being paranoid, or maybe I can’t accept getting creamed by new players after thinking I’m pretty good. But I’m around 15-16, I had team mates that were in the 20-30s, and I got locked in every time by this cheaty team. I was in a very hateful mood last night.

Re: Soapbox: Why A Nintendo 64 Classic Edition Might Not Be Such A Good Idea

Flipbot

Even though it was so phenomenal for it’s time, the games haven’t really aged well. Snes games still look amazing. The controller is my least favorite Nintendo controller in both looks and ergonomics. I already own better versions of the only N64 games I’d ever want to play, on DS and 3ds. Mario 64, Starfox, Zelda OOT, and MM. Maybe the DS Mario 64 is not necessarily better, but you can play as Yoshi. I’d rather have a Gamecube mini or better still, I’d rather they skip these and just release a few of the best ones for both on Switch, at least as remasters if we don’t get a VC.

Re: A Cheaper, Customisable 'Nintendo Switch 2nd Set' Has Launched In Japan Without A Dock

Flipbot

@MrBlacky I don’t understand what’s so difficult to understand. You can be anywhere or with anyone in handheld, don’t have to be isolated in one place. Or hog the TV just for gameplaying. You can even watch TV while game playing, unless it’s something on TV you’re really interested in. It’s like saying why would anyone want to read a book on a portable tablet when you can read your books on a much bigger computer monitor that’s tied to one place in the house.

Re: A Cheaper, Customisable 'Nintendo Switch 2nd Set' Has Launched In Japan Without A Dock

Flipbot

They absolutely could have and should have sold this with the charger. They’re already selling the dock and hdmi cables for much more than this discount. If Nintendo wants to push the multiple Switch household, they need to make the basic set not seem like a complete rip off. I get why there would be more than one in the house, with one docked place to play on tv and everyone keeping their own switches for playing handheld. I use mine in handheld mode most of the time. But two people need to have their own chargers.

Re: Feature: How One Man Is Turning Dead DS Lites Into Gorgeous Game Boy Advance Systems

Flipbot

I got rid of my ds lite years ago after I got a famicom gba micro. Both had the best displays for gba games, but if you’re playing something intense, like the final levels on the Klonoa games, the micro really cramps you’re hands. It’s fine for quick session of most other games, which is how I most often use it. And it’s tiny size allows me to store it in my 3ds case. Still wish 3ds had a gba slot. Or at least gba on VC. I had no interest in buying those or ds games on WiiU.
