@carlos82 i actually think it's more old fashioned than rubbish. At least it makes the 35th anniversary unique. The 30th was 8 bit amiibo Mario and Super Mario Maker (which i ironically got despite hating Mario). How many of you Mario fans got that one? Not more than 4 million. The 40th will be another big one. So yeah, dressing it up, it still seems perfectly fine.
@carlos82 it is a celebration of an anniversary. These are "bonus" games, like the 3DS ambassador games, The Zelda collection on Gamecube, the extra games in Mario 64DS. And honestly chances are they'll be available in another form in the future. Either as "pack ins" for a Mario themed Switch bundle or "free bonus" for the next major Mario game, Mario's wallet is missing.
Somedays i wish Mario would disappear. It's actually good they are making it limited, as that is a firm gauge on current popularity. And the people that got it can feel good about their purchase. I have no objections, because i like Nintendo for their IP other than Mario. (Mario Karts his best game, and he needs his mates to pull that off).
@TheBigNarwhal is there any way of seeing if it updated the Gamepad? I've just set new Personal bests in the Batman games and had a blistering run on MK8 (golding 200CC). The button response seems extra snappy. Or Xbox Series S response is so bad, it has made me a better Wii U player (it cannot be that). Maybe i've gone insane with lockdown. Cheers.
@EvrgrnCmln Yeah it might be fans want all the bells and whistles. But the appeal of alot of Switch games at the moment, aren't actually "high" fidelity. They are about the same as Wii U, which was heavily criticised for not being "good" enough all last gen. People wanting a high fidelity F Zero would be better served by an alternative on PS5 or Series X, made by an indie. I still think there's room for Nintendo to do something enticing to fans within a modest budget. Even NES remix on Wii U did alright sales wise and that had all odds against it in a modern gaming world (and launched on a console with an awful install base). As Nintendo is all about Imagination, i actually think a new Star fox or F Zero as if they were running on SNES or perhaps N64 hardware would be both nostalgic and highly entertaining. They can literally concerntrate on storytelling, impressive levels (from a design perspective) and solid game mechanics. This can be a total counter to the "look at these amazing graphics" approach so many games try to present and then fumble the actual game. Case in point for that is The Medium, looks great at times, has some technical hiccups because they are a small team, but it lacks most in the gameplay, it is little more than an engaging story down graphic centric corridors. I still enjoyed it, but it was as superficial as alot of AAA games. Been a good discussion. I live in hope F zero GX sold over a million and no game was seen since (home console wise). Wonder how it would sell "as is" on Switch, with it's much larger install base.
@EvrgrnCmln while i totally understand your point of view. There are indie games and even bigger budget studios right "now", capitalising on older fan bases and nostalgia. All without "diminishing" the quality and perception of the IP. I'll point you to Streets of Rage 4, Capcom just released Ghosts and Goblins, and previously released Mega Man 11. Also you are forgetting Nintendo has ties to alot of smaller studio's that used to handle "portable" games. These studios cannot just up and make a AAA game. They are exactly the studios Nintendo should be collaborating with to "develope", "beloved" IP. Time and time again the average F Zero fan has said, Why don't Nintendo work with Shin'en to produce a new F zero? As an F Zero fan myself, i see absolutely nothing wrong with that and will gladly try that game if it ever materialises. Nintendo is in the perfect position to do it. Hope you have a lovely day, i'm off to play some Zelda as it's been awhile.
@EvrgrnCmln when a games company makes money from Games because "it makes fans happy" is exactly the reason to. Nintendo made Animal crossing to sate "fans" and everyone who slammed amiibo festival. Super Mario Oddessey was made because Switch needed a flagship Mario game. Zelda Breath of the Wild, was Nintendo trying to bring the series into more modern territory, to please fans like me. Splatoon 2 was made to give the millions of "fans" in Japan a new game to move to once they got Switch. At the very fundamental level, it's 'fans' that drive the industry. If a game can sell 100,000 then make a lower budget game, it's still for the fans. If the game can sell 7 million go for the big budget, four year dev cycle (Mario, Zelda). Look at competitors who are on the decline, they are all there because they're fans aren't happy, and haven't been for years. Even EA are trying to change their negative perception, because it has blighted every "new" thing they have tried to bring to the table last gen. Company perception plays a big role, especially now that it is easier to refund digital purchases (except on Nintendo, why is that?).
@TheBigNarwhal Yeah it was fantastic from 2012-2015, then i didn't use it as much. Fairly sure i ordered a Justeat from it in 2017 before i got my Switch(which is used slightly less) So i was surprised that doesn't work anymore. I was watching youtube videos on it, usually Nintendo directs, all the way up to 2019. Now Youtube is just grey squares... I have been playing alot of my back catalogue of VC and other games i never finished. The Update changed an SSL?
It appears that some websites no longer function with the web browser. Some still work e.g Polygon. But alot have errors, especially with images, Gamespot and Eurogamer just won't display images. Youtube is completely broken now, but we knew they were cutting support for that ages ago. Overall i think it's killed the browser functionality. An i was hoping for the opposite haha. Oh well.
Edit: browser is still fast, so will tinker to see what else plays well with it. Just seems odd that some things work, and
others are a mess.
Last Edit: browsers been borked, cannot even order a Justeat off it.
Ah well at least i still have my memories. It was a great browser for all of last gen.
Auto Shortened to Bamco Next. Please lord bring us the next Ridge Racer, the Next Ace Combat (i loved infinity personally, 7 was a little meh), the Next Armoured Core. Likely it'll be more Dark Souls, but hope they do a few more new things aswell.
Will download when i am next on (likely later today), was hoping for some Opera improvement to allow the browser to use game streaming services at low resolution. Been tinkering with Geforce Now and i am certain there's a way to get Wii U to access it, without hacks.
Still got the original cartridge, it was an alright game, let down mostly by the top down sections being a little cumbersome. When i saw the Pic i was actually hoping it was the Gamecube game with an overhaul. That again was mediocre, but i enjoyed a few of the missions and how it ended. Would love to see a new Robotech game as we now have the hardware to really do the transformations justice.
@EvrgrnCmln while i agree in part, Nintendo have enough following and now enough revenue that they can gamble a little bit more with smaller projects with those IP. During the Wii U period, yes without doubt an Earthbound, a wave race an excite bike/truck nor star fox would change their fortunes. Now that animal crossing has given them enough money to buy a planet however, time for some smaller projects based on new or older IP. Also i'll just mention i know dozens of people who bought the Snes Mini for Star Fox alone, then got a Switch as a result, and are now waiting for Star fox 3, even if it's a small indie developed game. And that's the real key, Nintendo don't even need to go "big" a simpler game will do for those fans.
He is saying one thing, then if you look at the games Nintendo make and release, to me, it looks totally the opposite.Nintendo make "safe bet" low cost but comfortable return sequels, to the catch as many as possible IPs. They've "developed" very few of their IP and characters in the past 15 years. Stagnation has set in for 75% of their catalogue (likely more) and they chose to ignore IP that can produce new ideas. That's my take on Nintendo at the moment. Unless he is a actually blaming the stagnation on fickle fans, in which case, use that pot of money and do both, one safe bet game, one developing "beloved" character game (F Zero, or Star Fox, or Earthbound, excite, wave race, etc). Or they could make a new IP set in the world of an IP and have that character swing by in parts of it, like a Movie cameo (like Rabbids and Starlink, but have Nintendo develop it) Perhaps Nintendo have too many options right now. Hopefully some suprise nugget will materialise in the next couple of years.
No disappointment at all. The PC market is too big in some countries to ignore, and Rise will run on a "massive" amount of PCs (likely alot more than can run MH World) so it makes so much sense. It'll keep player numbers high and Capcom will be buried in money. Only bodes well for future MH games.
@Blister crikey that's pretty awful. Mine was pretty decent, good enough for the GBA player and also the second screen Gamecube games (using the GBA player too). It held up "okay" for Mario Kart DD too, but more than two players was a bit of a strain on the eyes.
@KingMike fairly sure UMDs played at 576i, which was standard TV resolution in 2004. There were 720p HD ready TVs but they were expensive and wouldn't have shown much difference.
Edit: yes gameplay was limited to PSP screen res. UMD s were not, hence the cable being more for using PSP as a UMD movie player.
Nintendo had the cable and the dev tools to always do this. How do you think the dual screen adverts were made? They got direct feed from the hardware, not taking pictures of the poorly lit screen.
The tools let you pick which screen, or both.
As many have said the PSP actually had this commercially, with the cable costing about £30 (U.K). Sony wanted UMD movies to be more popular, so using the PSP to play the movie on the big screen TVs was their idea to try and make that happen. UMD movies never really took off, however, so the cable's were rarely produced.
Edit: side note, used to use my Gamecube with a portable screen. I'm sure if there was a power pack for it, it'd have been fun to take camping.
Literally, this was the only thing that originally stopped me from triple dipping (own original N64 and Nightdives Steam version). Aaaaaand my NSO expired. I really enjoyed Turok 2s multiplayer, but is it worth a sub and another copy? Perhaps if I use MH Rise as the excuse for NSO, yes, that might swing it .
Edit: do they allow the pitch black mode with Raptors online? It was pretty much multiplayer aliens in 1998, running around in the dark with flashlights, getting picked off by Raptors.
Just going to get this off my chest. Minish Cap is a lovely game, however it has some of the worst item designs and uses in the whole of Zeldadom. A few hours in and i always scratch my head as to why i cannot use "X" to get there or use "Y" to pop over that little fence. Fantastic premise but wholely let down by limited imagination (some claim hardware, but that is baloney).
Replayed this on Xbox one, i didn't think much of it. And it looks woeful for a 2005 game. I had a few friends that "loved" this game, so there is someone who will buy it. I much prefer pretty much every other Star Wars game from that generation. Rogue squadron 2 & 3, Jedi Knight 2 & 3, Bounty Hunter, Clone Wars, Battlefront 1 & 2 and Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2. Who knows maybe i'll give Republic Commando another go. I'd much rather see more new games now though.
One of the handhelds i regret parting with (along with Atari Lynx 2), i liked the robot game for Neo Geo pocket most. I've played a couple of these, Samurai Showdown 2 was enjoyable as was fatal fury. It was a competent little machine, just no one made games for it.
I've just been playing it in the Capcom Arcade in the free version. It seems much fairer than i remember as a kid to the point were i feel like i can actually beat it. My brothers could finish it but i never could. Will keep my eyes on this "new" take. I'll have to boot up Super Ghouls an Ghosts and play through that again at some point too.
Yeah i remember preview screenshots and being "interested" as i enjoyed several Rare games (Blast corps, Jet force Gemini, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark) in that period. I wasn't too bummed about it being changed to Star fox either as it tried to flesh out that IP in ways Nintendo themselves have never really bothered with. Nintendo simply keep releasing the same Starfox story over and over again, killing the IP like sillies. So i am thankful for SF adventures, Assault and Command even if they aren't "top tier". One day Fox, you'll get the game you deserve.
I would just like to point out, Breath of the Wild had no Dungeons. It had locations and devine beast contraptions. Still a great achievement however.
Edit: nice change on the Shrines.
Imagine the sales spike if BotW was available for £20? Everyone who doesn't own that game, would buy it. Another 40+ million extra sales. A Switch selects range surely must be round the corner.
Hopefully some nice new games to get later in the year. Still expecting Bayo 3 this October. They'll be promoting Bravely default and MH Rise probably too.
The thing i find really peculiar is this; i know loads of people who still have and play (occasionally) on their normal DS and never got a 3DS. If Nintendo came out with a new DS title that was Mario or perhaps something new, it would likely sell, despite the console being nearly 17 years old.
Not going to lie, this confused me for five minutes until i realised they are pointing out the Cactus looks like a Cactus and "not" the Cacti character is based on a fan mod (which it isn't, that is the cacti character like it usually appears in Mario games). So i was totally not looking at the correct bit of the photo. They pointed out nonsense it seems as i had a cactus toy looking like that from the 1980's, with the flower. It is a stereotypical design, hence why my eyes didn't even acknowledge it on first glance.
Really enjoyed the Wirebug, it is a superior "aerial" class from generations, the ability to gain height then smash down really helps with my Hammer Bash stuns. Which then links very well into the mounting mechanic. Some really tangible combo chaining possiblities.
I will likely archive a couple of games to try this version out. At launch the xbox version ran from 8GB install with potato textures, so up to 30GB suggests they don't have a big problem with Textures. Fairly sure Apex is around 60GB on final install on Xbox one.
I was Hammer all the way, been good at Hammer Since Tri and safe to say my Bopping skills were put to good use against that bubble blower Mizutsune (enraged Royal Ludroth much?). Enjoying the demo still, definitely considering Rise and possibly even renewing NSO if some of my friends get it.
@NathanTheAsian a HDD with it's own power supply like is recommended for Wii U would be the easiest way. I use a powered caddy with an internal SSD attached for my Wii U, cost £60, got 200 games on it.
Edit: most save games are on the Switch itself so losing power might not be as catastrophic as you may think. But i get your concern.
@NathanTheAsian storage is a problem for every console, not just Switch. The new machines have made it even worse. I now have a 3 TB hard drive were some games run from it and others i have to transfer to internal storage(360 odd gig which is also pants) for "reasons". The internal storage on Xbox Series isn't much faster because the dreaded Unreal engine cannot load a texture problem is still present, despite the extra speed. So regardless, the micro SDs are essential for any serious Switch owner, same as an external HDD was for the older X1 and PS4, Wii U etc.
Edit: three things a new Switch can do to address storage. 512GB internal (like the premium Shield TV had at launch in 2013). This would up the cost most. Second would be a dual Micro SD slot, so it can access two MSDs at the same time, less card swapping. Third is make the dock compatible with external HDD for long term storage and faster transfers to Switch and MSD, without the need for constant internet use.
I've had more crashes and disconnects on PS3, than i have ever had on wii, Ds(yes it had online!), Wii U and 3DS. At the moment even xbox is tripping out an awful lot. Who knew traffic would cause so many network problems....
@NathanTheAsian oh dear, apart from a few games the Switch is a remaster box. Hoping for some new games at some point this year. I'd just like to state that i own several games on Switch which "need" a better model, as the released versions are utterly "woeful". Still would like to play Vampyr, but i got the Switch version after a review stated it ran at 30 with dips. No, no it does not run at 30 lmao. Alien Isolation turns into a slide show when the Alien is onscreen. I guess you could argue that reflects your terror at seeing it coming toward you? And MK 11 crashes every hour and looks a mess compared to Injustice on Wii U. Props to good ports though, Sniper Elite 2 plays really well as does Elite 4. God Eater 3 looks good and plays well etc. I enjoyed Doom, Skyrim and Warframe ports aswell.
@NathanTheAsian i actually think Nintendo already have a good idea of what the next Switch looks like. Their main hurdle is tooling factories for another model in the current climate. I agree with your point of Nintendo is happy with current sales so a new model is even less a priority. But software wise the ceiling is very apparent for the hardware's capability, even with first party titles like this rerelease with additional content. Nintendo is building a brand with Switch, so when it becomes more viable, a better model will be produced.
@twztid13 The Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 disc version for xbox 360 and PS3 had Peace Walker on an extra disc with it. Only the Vita was just 2 & 3 on their own. They divided them into two digitally.
@NathanTheAsian perfectly fair to be honest. The next gens just have nice processors to up framerate and resolution, and they "still" fail at it. A Switch Pro would make the current Switch library more stable and encourage people to buy versions of games simply because they run well portably. Which is already what is happening with the normal Switch, except some games don't run well portably with the current model.
@NathanTheAsian the New Xbox and PS only improve "some" games. The new xbox game (the Medium, i'm half way through) barely keeps 30fps on the base model. They're still going to sell well. A Better Switch would level out any framerate dips and dynamic res of the current library, so that "some" games is actually a sizeable chunk. I'd buy one in a heartbeat, up to £500.
Demo is good and gives you a Great idea of how the final game will shape up. I was impressed to how close to World it is, yet still building more systems ontop. Very likely purchase.
@Guitario A rerelease of Twin Snakes wouldn't be too much hassle either, hell that could be the bonus game instead of Peace Walker. Then sell Peace Walker separately or as an NSO incentive. Loads of money making potential.
MH Rise demo still and The Medium, glad it finally came out, not sure Unreal engine is the best choice (slow texture load, ancient problem since UE 3) but it is half decent, great atmosphere at times. Kind of had an Eternal Darkness vibe in there too, along with Shadow Man as the other realm is practically Deadside. God i'd love to see a new take on either of those.

Fantastic premise but wholely let down by limited imagination (some claim hardware, but that is baloney).
Re: Star Wars: Republic Commando Is Landing On Switch This April
Replayed this on Xbox one, i didn't think much of it. And it looks woeful for a 2005 game. I had a few friends that "loved" this game, so there is someone who will buy it. I much prefer pretty much every other Star Wars game from that generation. Rogue squadron 2 & 3, Jedi Knight 2 & 3, Bounty Hunter, Clone Wars, Battlefront 1 & 2 and Knights of the old Republic 1 & 2. Who knows maybe i'll give Republic Commando another go. I'd much rather see more new games now though.
Re: SNK Announces Neo Geo Pocket Color Compilation For Nintendo Switch
One of the handhelds i regret parting with (along with Atari Lynx 2), i liked the robot game for Neo Geo pocket most. I've played a couple of these, Samurai Showdown 2 was enjoyable as was fatal fury. It was a competent little machine, just no one made games for it.
Re: Preview: Ghosts 'n Goblins: Resurrection Is Going To Hurt You, A Lot
I've just been playing it in the Capcom Arcade in the free version. It seems much fairer than i remember as a kid to the point were i feel like i can actually beat it. My brothers could finish it but i never could. Will keep my eyes on this "new" take. I'll have to boot up Super Ghouls an Ghosts and play through that again at some point too.
Re: Rare's Cancelled N64 Project Dinosaur Planet Has Been Leaked Online
Yeah i remember preview screenshots and being "interested" as i enjoyed several Rare games (Blast corps, Jet force Gemini, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark) in that period. I wasn't too bummed about it being changed to Star fox either as it tried to flesh out that IP in ways Nintendo themselves have never really bothered with. Nintendo simply keep releasing the same Starfox story over and over again, killing the IP like sillies. So i am thankful for SF adventures, Assault and Command even if they aren't "top tier". One day Fox, you'll get the game you deserve.
Re: Random: Zelda: Breath of the Wild Player Beats Every Dungeon With His Feet
I would just like to point out, Breath of the Wild had no Dungeons. It had locations and devine beast contraptions. Still a great achievement however.
Edit: nice change on the Shrines.
Re: EA Acquires Racing Game Specialist Codemasters
Feels like full circle, aren't half of Codemasters' employees disgruntled ex EA games employees? I hope EA treats them right.
Re: Random: Did You Know About Nintendo Switch's ZL/ZR Battery Feature?
I didn't know, i always have the percentage to gauge how much load my Switch is under.
Re: Nintendo Announces 'Digital Deals' Sale, Up To 75% Off (Europe)
Imagine the sales spike if BotW was available for £20? Everyone who doesn't own that game, would buy it. Another 40+ million extra sales. A Switch selects range surely must be round the corner.
Re: Nintendo Direct To Air Tomorrow, Wednesday 17th February
Hopefully some nice new games to get later in the year. Still expecting Bayo 3 this October. They'll be promoting Bravely default and MH Rise probably too.
Re: Video: 11 Great 3DS Games Overshadowed By The Nintendo Switch
The thing i find really peculiar is this; i know loads of people who still have and play (occasionally) on their normal DS and never got a 3DS. If Nintendo came out with a new DS title that was Mario or perhaps something new, it would likely sell, despite the console being nearly 17 years old.
Re: Poll: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Is Out Today On Switch, Are You Getting It?
I would actually gladly buy Bowsers Fury Solo for £20. I got SM3D World for £20 in the selects Wii U range around 2016.
Re: Random: Oops, Super Nintendo World's Cactus Seems To Be Lifted From A Fan-Made Game
Re: Monster Hunter Rise Producer Says You'll Have To "Get Used" To The New Wirebug Feature
Really enjoyed the Wirebug, it is a superior "aerial" class from generations, the ability to gain height then smash down really helps with my Hammer Bash stuns. Which then links very well into the mounting mechanic. Some really tangible combo chaining possiblities.
Re: Will You Be Clearing Up Some Space For The Switch Version Of Apex Legends?
I will likely archive a couple of games to try this version out. At launch the xbox version ran from 8GB install with potato textures, so up to 30GB suggests they don't have a big problem with Textures. Fairly sure Apex is around 60GB on final install on Xbox one.
Re: Silent Hill, Gradius And Contra Composer Akira Yamaoka Teases New Project
Silent Hill for certain, will it be a reboot, will it be VR? (Highly likely) looking forward to the announcement regardless.
Re: Square Enix Reports Increased Annual Sales, Despite Individual Game Losses
I honestly thought they'd attribute it to Argos selling through 3DS game stock for £3. Bravely default 2 has never sold so quickly.
Re: Capcom Reveals The Most Used Weapon In The Monster Hunter Rise Demo
I was Hammer all the way, been good at Hammer Since Tri and safe to say my Bopping skills were put to good use against that bubble blower Mizutsune (enraged Royal Ludroth much?). Enjoying the demo still, definitely considering Rise and possibly even renewing NSO if some of my friends get it.
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
@NathanTheAsian a HDD with it's own power supply like is recommended for Wii U would be the easiest way. I use a powered caddy with an internal SSD attached for my Wii U, cost £60, got 200 games on it.
Edit: most save games are on the Switch itself so losing power might not be as catastrophic as you may think. But i get your concern.
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
Re: Nintendo Is "Replacing Its Multiplayer Server System" Dating Back To The Wii U And 3DS Era
I've had more crashes and disconnects on PS3, than i have ever had on wii, Ds(yes it had online!), Wii U and 3DS. At the moment even xbox is tripping out an awful lot. Who knew traffic would cause so many network problems....
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
@NathanTheAsian i actually think Nintendo already have a good idea of what the next Switch looks like. Their main hurdle is tooling factories for another model in the current climate.
I agree with your point of Nintendo is happy with current sales so a new model is even less a priority. But software wise the ceiling is very apparent for the hardware's capability, even with first party titles like this rerelease with additional content.
Nintendo is building a brand with Switch, so when it becomes more viable, a better model will be produced.
Re: Mini Review: Disjunction - A Fine-Looking Homage To Konami's Classic Metal Gear Titles
@twztid13 The Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 disc version for xbox 360 and PS3 had Peace Walker on an extra disc with it. Only the Vita was just 2 & 3 on their own. They divided them into two digitally.
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
@NathanTheAsian perfectly fair to be honest. The next gens just have nice processors to up framerate and resolution, and they "still" fail at it. A Switch Pro would make the current Switch library more stable and encourage people to buy versions of games simply because they run well portably. Which is already what is happening with the normal Switch, except some games don't run well portably with the current model.
Re: Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury Frame Rate And Resolution Detailed
@NathanTheAsian the New Xbox and PS only improve "some" games. The new xbox game (the Medium, i'm half way through) barely keeps 30fps on the base model. They're still going to sell well. A Better Switch would level out any framerate dips and dynamic res of the current library, so that "some" games is actually a sizeable chunk. I'd buy one in a heartbeat, up to £500.
Re: Reminder: Enjoy Capcom's "Limited Time" Monster Hunter Rise Demo While You Still Can
Demo is good and gives you a Great idea of how the final game will shape up. I was impressed to how close to World it is, yet still building more systems ontop. Very likely purchase.
Re: Mini Review: Disjunction - A Fine-Looking Homage To Konami's Classic Metal Gear Titles
@Guitario A rerelease of Twin Snakes wouldn't be too much hassle either, hell that could be the bonus game instead of Peace Walker. Then sell Peace Walker separately or as an NSO incentive. Loads of money making potential.
Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 30th)
