Update: Online Play may no longer be available in the Monster Hunter Rise demo, but if you did download it during the "limited-time" period, you can still quest via solo or local play (depending on the number of turns you have remaining). Here's the full message clarifying this at the start of the demo:
"Online Play will be disabled after the trial period for this demo, at which point you will have to use Local Play."
The demo also appears to no longer be available to download from the Switch eShop.
Earlier this month, Capcom launched a special demo for its highly anticipated Switch release, Monster Hunter Rise.
While there were some teething issues when the demo went live on the eShop, things were eventually sorted out and the good majority of players have had a blast since then with the game's online and local co-op multiplayer.
Unfortunately, this is a "limited time" offering and is only playable until 1st February.
If you download and play this demo, when the full game is released you'll receive a handy in-game item pack to help you get stuck into the full release.
In related news, earlier this week Nintendo revealed a Monster Hunter Rise Switch bundle and Pro Controller.

It sucks I was injoying my time with it I wish they would keep the demo on there up till it comes out.
Monster hunter world spoiled me rotten, don’t think I can play this new one if it doesn’t have the same quality of life improvements
@Snatcher yeah I don't get why they have to disable it, it's very limited as it is already.
I really wish the demo wasn't temporary like with monster hunter generations
YOU CAN CONTINUE PLAYING OFFINE AFTER THE DEADLINE!
Just need to download before deadline.
Enjoyed the demo so far 35hrs in.
Well, that's stupid. Defeats the purpose of having a demo at all.
Wasn't a big fan of the online lobby system, prefer the quest board in World.
Might eventually pick it up when it drops in price
If you've already downloaded it can you still play it after today?
Played it for maybe 2 hours when it came out, I'm done, I'll wait till the next demo, or full game. lol
@My_ultimate_is_ready yeah they don't have same quality because Rise much better than World. Except graphic part.
I actually thought it was still going to be playable as long as you downloaded it before it was pulled on Feb 1...silly me. 🤦♀️ I’m absolutely going to have to try it this afternoon!
I. CAN'T. WAIT. FOR. IT'S. RELEASE.
I think I'm going to explo-
@Snatcher @Rob3008 @Jooles_95 According to the opening message of the demo it says "Online Play will be disabled after the trial period for this demo, at which point you will have to use Local Play". This could be referring to the 30 quest play limit or to the Feb 1st date where as long as it's downloaded you can keep playing offline only after that date. I choose to believe the latter. However even the Eshop page is pretty vague so I'm still not 100% certain.
The official MH website seems to also imply that offline mode is still playable as long as you haven't already hit the 30 quest limit but downloading the demo and online won't be on the Feb 1st.
@My_ultimate_is_ready
I am pretty sure that MHW is your very first game in Monster Hunter's long history.Mhw can not be compared to MH Generations Ultimate or Mh Rise.Mhgu has 6 different styles for each weapon,with different combos,and bigger monster's roster.
Back to MH XX then... I only hope that they keep the maiden songs title screens on the full release of the game.
It took me a while but i managed to get the hang of the controls. So yeah I'll be grabbing this when it drops.
@status-204
What are you talking about?
This game looks like one of the better games in undocked mode.
I was in until the terrible Wyvern Riding tutorial and then my eyes were opened to this game being a nightmare
@status-204 The game is virtually locked at 30fps.
@status-204
The game has virtually flawless performance, be it docked or handheld, be it single player or 4 player online. As can be seen here:
The only issue is a known bug where IF you have a ton of friends in your friends list (like 40-50+) it tanks Framerate online in multiplayer. Which Capcom has already tweeted about and said the bug will not be present in the full game.
@My_ultimate_is_ready
It does have the same quality of life improvements as World. Have you even looked into it? Not only does it have the same QoL improvements, it has even more QoL improvements. In fact, you might not be able to go back to World after playing Rise. Palamutes to traverse fast, wirebug mobility and wirefall recovery, no more hot/cold drinks, cutscenes don’t interrupt multiplayer, etc.
@Lord @Rob3008 @Snatcher @iLikeUrAttitude
The demo lasts forever!
You simply can’t download it after Feb 1st, or play online in the demo. But you can play it forever. If the 30 play count expires, just delete the save data.
@Mr-Fuggles777
Not sure what you mean. There’s always been quest boards and there will still be quest boards. This is a demo, not the full game. It’s structured differently, just like the World demo was.
The lobby system is identical, aside from going back to 4 person hubs and having a separate multiplayer hub quest line so as to not get interrupted by cutscenes like in World.
@status-204
Actually, other Framerate tests show its variable resolution and comes in at 848p which can drop to 756p, with 648p in handheld that can drop to 540p). These guys just reported the lowest numbers recorded.
Feeling smooth has nothing to do with resolution though. But as far as resolution goes, the game really does look phenomenal, be it docked or handheld. The videos and screenshots speak for themselves. Yes, the game is less than MHGU, but there are more factors than just resolution that make up image quality, which is why this game looks so much better than MHGU. it’s easily one of the best looking games on the switch docked and the best looking handheld game to date.
Handheld Footage
Numbers on paper don’t really mean much compared to what the game actually looks like. I’ve seen 1080p games that look like crap and I’ve seen 720 games that look absolutely stunning. If this isn’t good enough to meet your standards then I’m not quite sure why you own a Nintendo switch or how you ever managed to make it through the PS3 or 360 generation.
@status-204
I’m ok with you not enjoying the game. To each their own, as they say.
But it is factual that many, many comments responding to video footage of MH Rise asked if it was MH World DLC (any Switch game that looks so good people mistake it for being DLC for one of the best looking games on the PS4/X1, even if just at a cursory glance, is not a bad looking game), and/or refused to believe it was actually running on a base model Switch (we never saw people en masse call into question whether any other game was actually running on a base model Switch).
I think that speaks for itself, as objective data we can comparatively measure vs other Switch games shown.
I played for 30 minutes.
Which was longer than any other mh games I tried. Worst games ever. I don't get the appeal. It looks like it's a cool game and then it plays and your like wtf. /Shrug
@SlimPieEats
You don’t get the appeal because you don’t understand the game’s mechanics yet.
The response you just made is the same exact response as 90% of other new players. In fact, it was the exact same response I had when I first tried the franchise.
But once you actually commit to learning the game, try out the different weapons, find one that feels good, then practice and learn its combos, suddenly you start viewing the game differently. Suddenly it all starts making sense in feeling really really really good. Movement feels amazing. Combat feels amazing. Everything feels so deep and rewarding. But you’ll never understand that until you commit to learn the games mechanics.
Case in point: Hey Jay! on YouTube. He played the demo and basically said what you’re saying right now. Released a video explaining why he hated the demo and wasn’t buying the game. But the Monster Hunter community responded with an outpouring of support urging him to give it more time to understand, and that outpouring impressed him so much he has committed to playing through the entire game of Monster Hunter World to the end credits, with the promise that if he likes it he’ll buy Rise afterward.
And wouldn’t ya know, after his very first live stream session diving into MH World, with the help of the chat teaching him and guiding him, he’s already sucked in and doing more streams than he had committed to because he likes the game so much. We in the Monster Hunter community have heard comments like yours so many times, if we had a nickel for every time a new player said what you just said, we’d be rich. And yet, each and everyone of us understands where you’re coming from because we felt the exact same way at one point in time. But the game transforms from what you feel now to legitimately being the greatest video game of all time if you just make a serious commitment to learn the game.

@jaxonh I'm glad you like it. But if I have to learn to like something I by default of personality don't. I don't drink beer for this exact same reason I don't think I should have to aquire a taste for something. It's there or it isn't.
@JaxonH great that’s what I thought. And yes deleting save files, that’s how I’ve racked up 35-40hrs
@Lord
Wow! I’m only at 25-30. It’s so good just trying different weapons in a safe environment against intermediate monsters where I can make comparisons. The full game gives you one of each of the 14 weapons but by the time you progressed to the point you’re hunting monsters like this you would have to craft or upgrade each of the 14 weapons to viably use them and make test comparisons. I’ve narrowed down my choice to the Charge Blade, Switch Axe and Hunting Horn. All 3 have a wicked wirebug attack that closes distance with the monster. So useful.
@status-204
Yes, their perception is anecdotal, but it’s a fact that we had entire swarms of people saying that, versus other games where we did not. And that is an attribute based data comparison we can make. You could run the numbers- count the total comments stating it looks too good for Switch divided by total number of views, and use a test of proportions to determine the 95% confidence interval and whether there’s any statistical significance. That is an objective measurement. It’s still subjective opinions, but it’s an objective measurement of those subjective opinions based on data.
And I’ve never seen a single game to date on switch where people legitimately thought it was running on more powerful hardware, or refused to believe it was running on a base model. Whereas this game had what seemed to be hundreds, or at least a hundred. You can search the Monster Hunter subReddit and just count how many posts were made along those lines. Or Twitter or YouTube comments.
So whether they were looking at screenshots on a small phone screen or not, it’s still an apples to apples comparison because people look at other games on their small phone screens and yet, still don’t mistake them for being DLC of the best looking game on PS4. Still don’t refuse to believe it’s running on Switch and claim it’s gotta be PC footage or proof of a Switch Pro.
@SlimPieEats
I can appreciate that.
And in most situations I would actually agree with you. But I think Monster Hunter is worthy of an exception simply because the potential payoff is so high. There are legitimate videos arguing for why Monster Hunter World is the greatest video game of all time. Ask any MH player how much they love the game and most will tell you it’s the best game they ever played. So the potential payoff is a game that may very well end up being your favorite franchise of all time, versus the downside risk of wasting five hours in something that you ultimately don’t end up liking. Plus, some games just have so much depth you can’t truly come to terms with it unless you make an investment in that game. It’s a risk you kind of just have to take. And for any other game I would probably say nah, it’s not worth it because the game isn’t that good anyways. But this is a game that most fans feel are better than Zelda, better than Metroid, better than the best game I’ve ever played. And that’s worth taking a $60 risk on once in your life knowing that the vast majority of people who do actually take that risk and make the investment end up loving it. So it’s a relatively safe bet, knowing most people’s first impressions are bad and most people’s opinions later on are “Im blown away by how good this is!”. It’s not a guarantee, but the odds are definitely in your favor, with tremendous potential upside. A calculated risk.
But, that’s just my two cents. I fully support you in whatever you decide. 😁
@SlimPieEats
The problem is less about having to "aquire a taste", but more about the game being too different from other games.
It is one of the reasons why this game is so good, but also the reason why it is so hard to get into.
If you do everything wrong, the game doesn't feel well, which is normal. I can't fault the game for that.
To me, I took a few hours and from that point on I aquired thousands of hours of fun. That's a good deal in my book.
I still don't drink beer though .
If you don't want to take that effort to get into the game, thats your decision. It is not like I can't understand it.
Just didn't want to let that comparison to aquiring a taste for beer stand.
I walked away from MH in recent times because I just didn't have the dedicated time. I love the series and I'm really tempted to jump back in with MHR, or I may try to hold out for an inevitable MHR Ultimate 😏
@JaxonH I just found the matchmaking overly fiddly having to join a separate lobby. Will pick it up eventually but outriders is out around the same time so will probably pick that up instead for my looter fix and get Rise pre owned later down the line
My first taste of MH was the demo for 3U on 3DS. I didn't "get it" and never bought the full game.
4U comes around, friends talk to me about it, I really WANT to like it, so I download the demo and force myself to do a hunt as every weapon, and it was enough to get me to appreciate the depth and nuance to combat. I now place MH in the very highest tier of gaming franchises.
It is the best cooperative series in existence. I can't think of anything close.
Is it just my incompetence, or can you not adjust the camera’s X axis?
3U was my first Monster Hunter game. I played the demo then entirely gave up on it. Bought it for 3DS one day for reasons I don’t remember and then became obsessed halfway through low rank. Felt like such a badass taking out my first duramboros. Then I got the Wii U version and started doing g rank quests online at the beginning of high rank(risky move, I got booted a lot). 4U was amazing and I loved the insect glaive being added although since then I can’t stand playing the weapon with how much it changes every game. Played Generations and Generations Ultimate but not Worlds. However Rise looks and plays like the best I saw of worlds with the best of main line Monster Hunter.
For me it felt great and looked great and I love the intro with the singing, but it's far too much of a time sink for someone like me. I just don't have the spare time to get into it. There's tons of depth there though! I hope it does really well.
@Snatcher I believe only the online portion of the game is being knocked offline, and possibly the demo download from the eshop. If you run out of "Playtimes" you can simply go into your Switch's save files and delete the demo's save file and you'll have 30 more times to play the game.
@status-204
I don't "feel good" about it. It's just an observation. Whether you've seen it or not. I can take 5 minutes to search and link you if you like.
You seem to have an emotional investment in refusing to believe what I'm saying, even going too far by implying I'm "just making it up" because it "makes me feel good".
It doesn't make me feel any kind of way. I believe it because I read the comments with my own two eyes, over and over and over again.
edit: just for posterity, here's a tiny sample from Twitter, not counting all the other posts, YouTube comments, reddit posts, etc., so you can see for yourself...
So as for your comment, "I've never seen a single person outside your statements think this was DLC for World", well, now you have 🙂
I played until I’m satisfied. Still have about 10 quests left. Got two jobs and a huge backlog... but I wasn’t gonna miss the hunt. Got the deluxe edition and the amiibo all preordered and paid off. Hope we get the pro controller.
@My_ultimate_is_ready
Folks have said this already, but it seems like it does have lots of the same QoL changes (monsters are easy to find, no loading screen between areas, infinite whetstone, potions don't hardlock the hunter into a flexing animation, etc.). That said, some things are going to be missing; some of the weapon attacks/moves from Iceborne are gone, changed, or tied into Wirebug moves - the Helmsplitter for Long Sword, for example, is now tied to a Wirebug move. The Clutch Claw is not in the game, or at least not in the demo.
Overall, though, Rise looks like a very strong entry in the MH series. I have around 300 hours in World, and I have definitely been enjoying the Rise demo.
Demo is good and gives you a Great idea of how the final game will shape up. I was impressed to how close to World it is, yet still building more systems ontop. Very likely purchase.
@JaxonH yes I think the hunting horn is massively OP, it also looks like they have removed barrage from the bow. So I’m thinking hammer as my breaker and working through slice damage weapons to find my tail cutter. Gotta make them carves and breaks count!
Not sure I like the way healing works over old school heal.
@Mr-Fuggles777
It will have a lobby with the usual quest board.
@Lord
Each game they balance the weapons around macro data from the last, to help low popularity weapons get more play and the most popularity weapons less focus. Horn was the least used weapon in World, and Ichinose is a hunting horn main, and wanted people to start using it.
According to leaks it will have a separate mode that operates the way it used to, but in its current form, it’s definitely the best weapon for DPS barring Long Sword (and LS has a bug where Helm Splitter does way more damage than it will in the full game, so HH may even be closer to LS than we realize).
We do know customization and swappable moves will be in the game, per data mining and leaks and the fact moves shown in weapon showcase trailers weren’t in the demo, which already had 2 wirebug moves assigned. To what extent though, we don’t know, but it may just be wirebug moves. Kinda like how arts were swappable in MHGU as you unlocked more.
I really recommend Charge Blade and Switch Axe. Such satisfying weapons to use.
Based on your healing comment, I take it you skipped World? I was so used to old-school mechanics my knee jerk reaction was to reject a lot of the newer QoL improvements (like healing). But by the time I finished World, I came to realize it was for the best. There’s no safe zones in an open area map, and more aggressive, more fluid monster attacks, together balance the movement while healing.
But in Rise they kind of changed it from World. It’s more of a hybrid between World and old school. You get a partial heal right away, and then it slowly fills over time as long as you don’t cancel out or get hit. In World you got no healing right away and in old games you got it all at once. This new system ensures that, even if you dodge roll or get hit during the animation, you still get punished, but not a full force 100% punishment. More like 75%. That’s a fair compromise I think. That little bit right away could be enough to keep you alive if you’re at a sliver of health while poisoned.
If you’re coming from the old school games, this must be a lot of changes to take in. I remember having to adjust in World from all the changes, but now they just feel normal.
And here I am as one of the guys that still hasn't tried it yet even though I love Monster Hunter! At this point though, I trust Capcom to make a good game of this type.
Edit: I decided to not be lazy and I am currently downloading it now! Even if I don't get around to playing it before the online play expires, I will still enjoy the single player!
@Bl4ckb100d that's life now with newer games with switch🙄
@Lord only 4 players and you had to keep swapping lobbies between hunts because people would drop out etc.
I will give the game a go, just not a day 1 buy when there's so many other games in my backlog to catch up on - I've only just started playing Jedi Fallen Order, I'm that far behind.
Downloading it now, just in case I change my mind and actually want to check it out.
@Letasaq I’m pretty sure you’re wrong in assuming mhw is my 1st game in the series. Started from the 3ds days. Talking about quality of life is NOT MORE CONTENT in a game. I’m not saying the old ones was worse or that rise is bad, just hoping that things that world improved on will also be in rise.
@JaxonH don’t usually look into games or even pre order until they have been released and reviewed properly. Don’t trust developers these days. I normally wait 3months after launch to see if bugs are being ironed out and a complete game has been released. But if what you saying is true I will definitely be keeping an eye out on this
I cannot wait to play a real monster hunter game like Rise. MHW was too casual for me. Mh Rise is the true sequal to Monster Hunter 4. Capcom even said Rise is the true sequal. Spin off games like monster hunter world are ok. but I want a real meaty monster hunter game without half of the magic, monsters and weapons removed. like in MHW. thank goodness Rise takes the series back to its roots.
Well that sucks. I downloaded it but didn't play yet. Was going to get to it next week.
I've enjoyed it a lot, so far. However, I really want to see some performance work. The framerate and resolution is giving me motion sickness. 30FPS might be the target here, but with constant DRS that goes crazy during multiplayer, the chaos of battle is with overall performance rather than gameplay.
This game seems like a pitch for a Switch Pro.
Great marketing strategy, rip your best commercial for the game down.
@SlimPieEats
Man, you stirred the hornets' nest. Everyone has their two cents. : /
Anyways, at it's heart, it's a finely tuned boss battler that's as much about timing and situational control as it is about combos and teamwork.
I can't blame you for your perspective, but I can say that it's a truly rewarding experience given enough time.
wait, i just started it up and it says online will be disabled after the trial period and only local will function.
@Liam_Doolan are you certain the demo is ending, and not just the online component of the demo?
@NEStalgia Capcom's PR / socials never really clarified (to my knowledge), but as you've stated it looks like you'll still be able to play the demo - depending on the number of quests you have left.
I'll update the post.
