Re: New 4K Switch Model Could Launch For $399, Analysts Suggest

FargusPelagius

Even the new consoles don't do 4k 60fps yet and in backwards compatibility reach the 1080p 60fps that people wanted the whole of last gen. The new consoles also suck a whole lot of power( in comparison to Switch). At Nintendo's power consumption threshold they will only be able to buff Switch to a certain degree. It's possible it might just reach X1 levels docked, no where near 4k and requiring optimisations for 1080p at smooth framerates. Handheld it should just be able to do the same at 720p. Main benefits will be steadying resolutions and framerate. It will essentially be the console everyone wanted/imagined at launch 4 years ago.

Re: NERD Explains The Challenge Of Bringing Super Mario Sunshine To Switch

FargusPelagius

@BulbasaurusRex The Shield uses the same chip. The emulator they used even had added code to override critical errors that occured on original Gamecube hardware.
Unless the next Switch model will be fully compatible with the emulator, in which case Nintendo proper bungled the Switch Specification 4 years ago.
The Switch has motionplus and an IR sensor in the right joy con for wii waggle games. How did Shield run those games on a normal controller?
Added code. Nintendo has already done most of the work.

Re: This 1999 Interview Suggests Miyamoto Was Thinking About The Wii During The N64 Era

FargusPelagius

@Slowdive a note about Skyward Sword. It's timing in the U.K was quite awkward, alot of shops dedicated to gaming were going out of business and wii shelf space was overflowing with pre owned games, to the point barely any shelf space was available for "new" games. My local HMV had a grand total of 2 copies of Skyward sword at launch, both opened up (i hate it when they do that) collectors editions with the golden wiimote plus. Wii had plummeted hard that year and you could tell the game shops were struggling to make good decisions in regard to stock. Especially when you consider U draw had launched in Feb and destroyed THQ (and shelf space).
Skyward Sword might have gone down better with a traditional mode, but Nintendo were determined to use it to try an help push Wiimote plus's.

Re: Review: MechAssault: Phantom War (DS)

FargusPelagius

On the run up to the console release of Mechwarrior 5 i revisited this game. Got to say, apart from the overwhelming amount of symbols in the hacking mini game sometimes, this is actually a blast to play (pun intended). Collecting the ammo upgrades for the weapons is key as one level gives you an Alpha strike that is so satisfying, you practically nuke the opposing assault mech. For a DS (i always compare to a PS1) game this is a totally competent Mechwarrior. It is arcade fun that is marred by the difficulty of some of the hacking mini games. I'm playing it on a 2DS XL and also new 3DS, the smaller the touch screen the easier the hacking game. Deserves a "playable for fans" 6 out of ten.

Re: This 1999 Interview Suggests Miyamoto Was Thinking About The Wii During The N64 Era

FargusPelagius

@nhSnork totally agree. Motion controls in gaming were available in the 90's a Tilt pad for playstation was a 3rd party peripheral to compete with analogue sticks. They didn't catch on. It took the success of Wii and it's motion controls for the gaming industry to "always" consider some form of motion in gaming.
That tilt controller was the "blip", the Wii changed the game forever.

Re: A Kid Icarus: Uprising Sequel Would Be "Difficult", Says Masahiro Sakurai

FargusPelagius

I would love to see a sequel or a totally new take. The ground sections would actually benefit from traditional controls, but the flight was nearly perfect for a 3DS game.
Just imagine Nintendo taking a break from LoZ for a few years and doing a Nintendo, Monolith and Sakurai collaboration to really do Kid Icarus justice? It would be like BotW but with the breadth of a Xeno game, have flight and be chock full of Sakurai craziness. It won't happen but it would be amazing.

Re: Feature: Best Game Boy Advance (GBA) Games

FargusPelagius

A Castlevania and 2 Metroids in the top 10. A game i've never played at number one. What a list
Also i think Tekken Advance was missed off in voting, along with V rally. They would get an between 7-8. I lower scored alot of this list, 1 below it's average on here, so sorry for bringing the averages down to earth. What a list though.
Edit: You could easily extend the list to top 100 and still be having a fantastic time gaming with GBA.

Re: Feature: Plants Vs. Zombies Producer On Bringing EA's Frostbite Engine To Switch

FargusPelagius

I don't quite understand the logic of getting Frostbite working for this game. Yet Fifa and many others hadn't had the same consideration for over four years (despite higher profitability long term).
Surely this opens the gates for a Switch specific Fifa, or even a tailored Battlefield / Battlefront game just for Switch. EA is fishing for money as alot of their big high profile games floundered last gen.

Re: Feature: Zelda: The Wind Waker Proved We Don't Always Know What We Want

FargusPelagius

I shall politely disagree. Wind Waker will always be an entry level Zelda to me, utterly disapointing on release and artificially elongated to the point of tedium. I enjoyed Twilight Princess so much more, it was the Zelda the Gamecube always deserved.
Wind Waker was still 'good', it just is so far from my favourite due to it's simplicity. Also that clipping error through the shield is woeful, even in the HD remake.

Re: Super Bomberman R Online Is Ditching Its Stadia Exclusivity To Launch On Switch And Other Consoles

FargusPelagius

Yeah i had Super Bomberman R at launch (slim pickings), it had atrocious controller lag that made me ditch it rather rapidly. A bunch of people complained about the online being poor too, but i didn't even give it that chance.
If that's fixed, it might be worth giving a free to play version a go i guess. Konami should be doing other things than this however, in my opinion.

Re: Feature: The Brilliance Of Zelda: Oracle Of Ages & Seasons Forced Nintendo To Up Its Game

FargusPelagius

I definitely preferred the Oracle games to Minish Cap, which had some really underwhelming idea use and application in comparison. I wouldn't mind seeing a new Zelda follow a similar approach in the future. Please no more remakes, just get on with a nice new top down adventure. Either that or Legend of Zelda Maker, were we get to make our own dungeons and overworld using every conceivable item across all entries .

Re: Memory Pak: Looking Into The Light In Super Mario 64

FargusPelagius

First 3D games i played were in the 80's. Elite, Star wars etc not as sophisticated but you still moved around 3D space. Then the early 90's with Hunter, Mercenary, Frontier etc. Also Tomb Raider (96)was big in the U.K, which was part of the reason Nintendo had to drop the price of the N64 over here. I still loved my N64, but for Pilotwings, Shadows of the Empire and Turok (in the early launch window). Much more exciting than Mario 64 at the time.

Re: Feature: A Brief History Of Nintendo’s Home Hardware Add-Ons

FargusPelagius

Love the GBA player, i often boot it up and run through Metal Gear Solid, Mystic quest or one of the many many GBA games i bought over the years. I got the GCHD adapter so the Gamecube is nearly always hooked up.
On a side note, there's other peripherals i used to enjoy. We had the Nintendo Scope with our SNES, The mouse for Mario paint (what a great creative set of tools for it's era), The printer for the Gameboy and camera (nutty nutty Nintendo),the modem for Gamecube (for Phantasy Star and other shenanigans), The near Mandatory Expansion Pak for N64, The classic NES and SNES pads for Wii. Some good memories of add ons.
Edit: As a student i always wanted the Panasonic Q the Gamecube that could play DVD's. A modded unit was available from Liksang for £450, and i could never bring myself to actually make the purchase. One of my missed opportunities.

Re: Dark Horse Appears To Have Cancelled The ARMS Graphic Novel Series

FargusPelagius

That is a shame, my nephew enjoyed ARMs and i was looking forward to this. I hope ARMs gets a sequel. If Nintendo had done a £20 selects range with ARMs in, at this point in time, i bet it's player base would have picked up. Alot of young people have late adopted the Switch and completely missed this game, especially as Nintendo's sale's are awful.

Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year

FargusPelagius

@ModdedInkling the games are already "compromised" on Switch and Switch lite, they don't run as well as some expect or want. While i can accept that, if anything, it would only make a new Switch fly off the shelf at the same or faster rate than it is currently. People like me who bought two at launch (i didn't want Nintendo to fail early again, so i got my brother one) will get at least one of a model that has a better processor. Maybe i will give my launch model to my 6 year old niece who won't mind the diminished performance. It will end up like upgrading a phone, but with a longer 4-5 year cycle. Good discussion.

Re: Soapbox: I'm Tired Of Ports And Remakes - Where Are All Nintendo's New Ideas?

FargusPelagius

Totally agree, and Nintendo has actually done everything to help third parties create new IP (the Switch is still selling strong after 4 years). They simply cannot anymore, the Switch is at a peak and we've only really seen Square take an interest in Switch exclusives and to a lesser extent now Capcom. I find it totally bizarre that even Indies haven't managed to do much imaginative with Switch. Something like Wii U's Affordable Space adventures, should be occuring every few months with Switch's install base. This gen, no one has taken any risks, yet the same studio's are folding and re opening as "new" studio's. So even playing it safe isn't working out for some devs (surely that is a sign of true stagnation in the market, at least ideas wise).
The whole industry could do with a shake up.

Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year

FargusPelagius

@Ghost_of_Hasashi yeah i understand all that. The problem i pointed to, is that Publishers are not currently interested in making specific games that are tailored to the Switch hardware. Square and Capcom are pretty much the only two, other than Nintendo themselves. All other publishers are doing ports. The list of ports will get smaller as devs shift focus on newer hardware. It sucks. I hope Nintendo has managed to garner enough indie support and goodwill to fill the release schedule with "quality" rather than some of the tat that has flooded the eshop.
Both wii and DS had games made specifically for the hardware, that helped them so much in the long term. 4 years in and Switch has barely scratched the surface of it's potential in this regard, and it may not get a chance to if MH Rise doesn't encourage third parties to develope "new" games for Switch.
Publishers have become dependent on multiplatform releases, it's counter to what Switch needs in the long game, that Nintendo had in mind.
Also i never said PS5 is better. Alot of casual gamers in the U.K want one at the moment (no idea why, it barely has any specific games). Only Switch owners i have seen recently are school children or mums, so even in that regard, Switch isn't aimed at me anymore. Anyway happy gaming.

Re: Review: Apex Legends - A Great Game Hamstrung By A Compromised Switch Port

FargusPelagius

I expected the 8 gig "ready to play" potatoe textured xbox one version running at 30fps. I think PB was a little too ambitious. It simply doesn't play like any version of Apex, partly due to joy cons. Even with the pro pad i had to tweak the settings to get it in the ball park of other versions. Glad they tried but that was the fastest i have uninstalled a game since GR Breakpoint. A real shame.

Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year

FargusPelagius

@Abowens64 at this stage in the game, if publishers aren't making games for Switch (and possibly PC), they simply will skip Switch and do PS5, Series S/X and PC. It's sad but it looks like that is what is happening this year. There's only Capcom who have any kind of Switch centric support, and even they have a mainline Resi ready for the next gen transition. Switch is in a really awkward position. Popular, but it doesn't have the grunt to wow kids for long before they go back to PS and Xbox. Parents will be trading them in at Christmas for PS5s etc, guaranteed.

Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year

FargusPelagius

@ModdedInkling none that i've played. Then you cite second party games not running flat out. They've reached the Switch hardware ceiling. There may be a little more performance to squeeze, but the time it takes to accomplish that level of coding, simply isn't worth the extra 2-3 frames you get. It's like wanting Xenoblade chronicles X to have physics aswell as gorgeous graphics and draw distance, the hardware forces the dev to pick one.
What i think you are really annoyed about it the Devs expecting the Switch to handle really pretty and really performent, and they cannot quite pull it off. In my eyes they simply need a processor bump to make it look like they pulled it off.
I've been playing on X Series S and even that cannot run things perfectly, in that case, yeah devs need more time with the hardware. The Switch Hardware has been tinkered with since 2013 (Nvidia shield), we are seeing mature expertise here, not launch window hiccups.

Re: Rumour: Nvidia Is Stopping Production Of Switch's Most Important Hardware This Year

FargusPelagius

Hard to gauge, as there are no numbers of how many Nintendo already have access to. For all we know they could have at least 40+ million stock piled (for production and 5 years of repairs). It is likely they'd need anywhere near 100 million, which would give them flexibility for the next few years.
If Nvidia have a new SOC it is likely cheaper to produce. So it wouldn't at all suprise me if the new Switch is a minor revision, with a dirt cheap efficient SOC and a premium screen, that retails at the exact same price as Switch. It will simply be phased in exactly like the Mariko model.
But it's rumour.

Re: Sega Wants To Know How It Can 'Enhance Your Gaming Experiences'

FargusPelagius

@Grail_Quest in the end i had 4 Dreamcast's, i enjoyed playing it so much, whenever a GD rom drive wore out i swapped it out for a spare.
I also put that they should concerntrate more on leveraging their older IP, and possibly a modest hardware entry that could play a variety of older Sega Games and several new ones such as Yakuza and the upcoming Phantasy star online episode.

Re: Sega Wants To Know How It Can 'Enhance Your Gaming Experiences'

FargusPelagius

That was a really odd survey. Like SEGA have a plan with Animé, but have no idea if anyone will like it. Then randomly ask what do you want from Sega to enhance Gaming.
Also the Sega and one word was bull, first thing that came to mind was Golden Ax but it's two words so i had to totally change it to the second thing, which was Dreamcast.
I also suggested they ditch Sonic as their mascot temporarily .

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (March 6th)

FargusPelagius

Actually on a new run of Zelda Breath of the Wild for it's 4 year anniversary, it's like rediscovering how good the game was.
Edit: Also for the Macross game, something like a cross between Starfox Assault and Zero (sans gamepad) is pretty much how a new one would end up. The chicken would be more nimble as Soldier mode (think transformers Devastation). The key would be in level design to make the game engaging.
