Re: Nintendo Direct September 2025: Every Announcement, Game Reveal, Trailer

EvenStephen7

I didn't hate it, didn't love it. This entire direct has felt like a monkey’s paw scenario, where every exciting announcement came with a caveat.

Pro: It’s a 60-minute Direct!
Con: Without any groundbreaking reveal

Pro: It’s Mario’s 40th!
Con: There’s nothing today (like Mario 99) and we didn’t even get a hint of a new Mario game

Pro: They’re expanding NSO with Virtual Boy!
Con: You need an accessory that costs $99.99 to play it (on top of Expansion Pass) or a cardboard headset. No 2D options are available like on emulators

Pro: Mario Galaxy 2 is here!
Con: It costs $40.00 standalone

Pro: The Mario Galaxy movie reveal!
Con: It’s just a minor teaser

Pro: Metroid Prime 4 has a release date!
Con: That gameplay looked rough

Pro: Donkey Kong Banaza gets DLC!
Con: It’s thin, costs $20, and Mario Kart World (which arguably needs it more) is still ignored

Pro: Resident Evil series is returning to Switch!
Con: 7, 8, and 9 are all dropping…on the same day?

Pro: Final Fantasy 7 remake!
Con: Game key-card

Again, I didn’t hate it, but I feel like the initial high I was riding is slowly leaking out by the minute as more information comes to light. At times, I feel like Nintendo is determined to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Re: Surprise! Donkey Kong Bananza Is Getting DLC, And It's Out Today

EvenStephen7

On one hand, this is such a welcome surprise.

On the other, I could have used a little space between finishing the game and this DLC (also surprising, considering many are still playing the campaign). I haven’t had a chance to miss it yet and be excited to return.

I’d say I’d wait, but who am I kidding? This looks awesome.

Re: Virtual Boy Is Being Added To Nintendo Switch Online

EvenStephen7

Am I wrong in understanding the accessory is necessary?

If so, I think I’ll continue just playing in 2D via emulation. I don’t want to buy a big (presumably expensive) accessory for like 2-3 good games.

Either way, it’s nice to see Nintendo stop pretending like the VB never happened and embrace it.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl - Duel: Forsaken (N64)

EvenStephen7

The American one is an extension of the (very memorable and semi-controversial) ad campaign at the time. It’s also just more eye-catching than the generic European one.

But at the end of the day, sex sells, and a pretty woman is going to grab more attention (especially from adolescent boys, the main gaming demographic at the time) over barebones art.

Re: Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 31st July 2025

EvenStephen7

@robbingmay Oh I completely agree. I don’t even know if all of that will hit this year, like Air Riders. I just meant I want to get more info/release dates. We know next-to-nothing about Kirby Air Riders, little about Metroid, and so on. I’m eager to learn what I’ll be playing on my Switch 2 this fall (and plan budgeting along with all the other games on other platforms)!

Re: Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase Announced For Tomorrow, 31st July 2025

EvenStephen7

I know everyone is different, but I play across a lot of different platforms so third-party ports of older games that I can get cheaper elsewhere (like we got at launch) don’t necessarily excite me.

But I just realized how much time I’ve sunk into Fast Fusion so far on Switch 2.

So fingers crossed there’s more of those kind of games tomorrow.

Re: Random: Don't Worry Folks, Nintendo Says Mario And Peach Are Just "Good Friends"

EvenStephen7

This feels like Nintendo is being bizarrely chaste. Which is kind of odd since their closest entertainment analogue, Disney, has no problem displaying romantic relationships in every film.

I wonder if this has anything to do with a planned plot point in the upcoming movie or a new game, or if they just really want to keep their story options open (Peach and Luigi romance coming in hot!).

Re: Talking Point: One Month On, How Did Nintendo's Switch 2 Launch Go?

EvenStephen7

Loving the Switch 2 but I weirdly have been spending more time with my Steamdeck. Once more games show up on S2 I’ll put more time in. And Mario Kart World has been a great game for my kids, letting us enjoy something around the tv while also turning them into the next generation of fans.

But despite me going back to the Steamdeck, I can’t complain about the switch 2. Hardware is fantastic and it’s great for anyone who was already a Switch 1 fan.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Switch 2 Direct?

EvenStephen7

All I really wanted was a more powerful Switch with fun announcements and this brought it, though with a few “monkeys paw” moments (like backwards compatibility coming at a cost — but at least there is new content).

That said in my long wait for the Switch 2 I picked up a Steamdeck which kind of tempered my enthusiasm today. I already have a strong portable device, and I can already play GameCube games on the go. But I’ll be here day 1 for the Nintendo exclusive and to make memories with my kids/introduce them into games.

Re: Switch Online's Expansion Pack Promises "Excitement" In 2025

EvenStephen7

At this point, Nintendo needs to boost the release cadence and offer something unique to make NSO still worth it for me.

I was all about the NSO and Expansion Pass, even for the games I own but couldn’t play portably on modern hardware. But between the emulation issues, Nintendo refusing to put big games on NSO, and lack of features, I turned towards emulation on Steamdeck. I got sick of waiting for games like Diddy Kong Racing and decided to just play them now. There I can have retro achievements, better emulation and resolution boosts, mods to upgrade the textures, and a richer feature set anyway.

Now if Nintendo could add something unique and/or easier to use, like online multiplayer for games like Mario Kart 64, that would be fascinating.

But I don’t know if I’m eager to keep paying money to rent a collection that only updates a few times a year — often with games people aren’t clamoring for — and doesn’t bring anything new or unique to the table.

I want that ubiquitous Nintendo innovation to be applied to NSO.

Re: Reaction: Nintendo's Switch Emulator Fallout Is Shocking Only Because It Took This Long

EvenStephen7

I think the big turning point on Yuzu was people uploading Tears of the Kingdom and publicizing how you could play it for free ahead of release date. No wonder Nintendo suddenly decided to do something about it — their final big Switch game was having sales cannibalized. Those of us who were around for the Dreamcast days remember the problems Sega faced when people realized you could played burned game discs without having to mod the system. Nintendo has every right to defend their only line of revenue.

Citra going away is the bigger loss, if only because Nintendo isn't doing anything to support its legacy platforms. But from what I understand its open source and bound to come back in some form.

I'll be honest: I'm pushing 40 and feeling really nostalgic for the things of my youth lately. And while I can buy or stream practically any movie or show from my childhood, videogames are not as easy. So I've turned to emulating older systems.

I really hope this action isn't a sign of things to come with Nintendo getting aggressive on other emulators like Dolphin. If they don't support their own history, it'd be a shame to tear down others doing the same.

Re: Konami Announces Yu-Gi-Oh! Classic Collection For Switch, Launching This Year

EvenStephen7

@EarthboundBenjy Granted it’s not on Switch (at least not Switch 1), but Konami has suddenly shown an interest in “new” games — i.e., complete reimagining of classics that make for semi-new experiences — with Silent Hill 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. There are a bunch of recent and coming Silent Hill projects too.

I love these classic game collections and am hoping/wondering if they sell well enough to motivate Konami to remake the classics. Then if those sell well enough (I imagine they will) we might even get new IP games and new sequels.

Re: Random: It's Been 5 Years Since Metroid Prime 4 Was Rebooted

EvenStephen7

@RupeeClock I'll be there on day 1 of the new Switch, but I feel like it kind of has to launch on the Switch 1 as well. It's not going to be a good look to promise this game ahead of the Switch's launch, keep promising it for an entire (long) generation, then tell everyone "okay, we promise it's coming but you have to buy new hardware again for it."

Re: Soapbox: In 2023, Mario Got Weird Again

EvenStephen7

This definitely felt like the year of Mario, and it was the year that my kids suddenly took notice of him too. They loved the movie, the new Mario Kart tracks, Mario Wonder, etc….he was a constant force in this house all year.

And now he has a new generation of fans under this roof.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The Nintendo Direct, Then?

EvenStephen7

I'm surprised Paper Mario isn't another immediate drop, like the Metroid Prime and Pikmin remasters were. I'm also disappointed that we didn't get anything for NSO classic games, even an update on when to expect previously-announced titles like 1080 Snowboarding.

Otherwise it was an alright show. Tomb Raider 1-2-3 was a pleasant surprise. F-Zero, Mario vs Donkey Kong, and Paper Mario were all leaked beforehand but still great to have confirmed. It wasn't as mind-blowing as some of the previous ones, but it wasn't bad by any stretch.

Nintendo seems intent on keeping the Switch momentum going into the next system. It's one of the few consoles that seems to be going out with a bang, rather than a whimper.
