Re: Review: Another Crab's Treasure (Switch) - Great Ideas, Crabby Performance

Eggolor

I am by no means a fan of souls-likes, but I've had my eye on this game since it was shown off in the most recent Partner Direct, and I was wondering when this site would get around to reviewing it. A shame to hear about its performance on Switch. Here I was holding out hope for news of a physical release, but if the performance on Switch is subpar, I may just have to bite the bullet and get it on PC instead.

Re: Hands On: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Unfolds Gloriously On Switch

Eggolor

Wow, they actually bothered to address the backtracking? I know I probably shouldn't be surprised seeing as how it was easily the biggest flaw with the original game, but still, I'm impressed! Maybe now people can stop trying to downplay this game's quality by clinging to that one problem as if it somehow brings down the entire game.

Re: Garry's Mod Is Removing "All Nintendo Related Stuff From Steam Workshop"

Eggolor

FYI, there's been an article on Know Your Meme for the past month or so detailing that these claims come from a DMCA-abusing troll who goes by Aaron Peters. Garry from Facepunch clearly never bothered to verify the origin of the claim. That guy should be facing jail time for impersonating a corporation, but apparently it's super easy to get away with this stuff since the law is never enforced. It's beyond messed up. Either way, I already uninstalled GMOD because of this. I haven't touched the game in years anyway, so this was a good enough reason as any to free up some space on my PC.

Edit: I find it odd how these supposed "legit" takedowns come along only shortly after a bunch of false claims were submitted. If these are indeed real claims however, I interpret this as Nintendo getting sick of the constant comparisons of Tears of the Kingdom to GMOD and deciding to go straight for the source. That's a low blow, even for Nintendo.

Re: New Mario RPG Survey Acknowledges Existence Of Mario & Luigi Series

Eggolor

I really, REALLY wish I could respond to this survey. The fact that it exists at all is proof that Nintendo is genuinely rethinking their approach to Mario RPGs, and that Mario & Luigi has a shot at getting revived. It also increases the likelihood of Super Paper Mario coming back someday, and that game's return would be the only thing to surpass The Thousand-Year Door getting a remake in my eyes.

Re: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Tops Amazon's 'Best-Sellers' Chart As Pre-Orders Sell Out (US)

Eggolor

I know it might be a little too early to gloat, but this game selling so well already just goes to show that old Paper Mario is and always has been far superior to any of the new stuff. This is proof that the old fanbase isn't just a vocal minority. Paper Mario bros... we are so back.

To all the fans of modern Paper Mario out there, I don't want to say "I told you so!" except I actually do, but if you want to play something truly special, all I can say is please buy this game. Not only is it a REAL Paper Mario game, but it's also really, really good on top of that. As someone who has the first three Paper Mario games among their favourites of all time, I honestly cannot recommend this remake enough. Once you play The Thousand-Year Door, you'll finally understand what us old fans have been talking about all these years, and you'll probably come to realise that we were right all along. You'll thank me later for it, trust me.

Re: Deals: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door - £10 Off In UK, Paper Plane Pre-Order Bonus

Eggolor

@Clammy I hope you have fun paying $100+ for a second-hand copy of the original then.

In all seriousness, GameCube copies of TTYD have been scalped to the moon and back for years now, so unless you want to pay an exorbitant amount to some random schmuck on eBay or some other site, this is your only way to play the game legally. Besides, this is a full remake of an already amazing game that ultimately still costs less than what used copies of the original go for nowadays. You really have no excuse for not buying this unless you still own a copy of the original and are satisfied with it.

Also, too short? The Thousand-Year Door is a 20-30 hour long RPG, possibly much longer if you're a completionist or a first-time player who wants to savour the experience. It's not exactly a short game unless you're a speedrunner.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Box Art And New Screens For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door On Switch

Eggolor

@N00BiSH Allow me to explain it you, if you don't mind. In the original Paper Mario trilogy, none of the characters were actually made out of paper in-universe. The paper theming was merely a stylistic choice that was entirely divorced from the story, characters, writing and gameplay outside of a few visual gags.

The white outlines seen in Colour Splash onwards demonstrate a much bigger problem, that being a fundamental misunderstanding from the modern Paper Mario team on how the worlds in these games were originally presented. The paper theming was taken too far to the point where everyone and everything is now literally made out of paper, and this permeates almost every other facet of the newer games, from the writing mostly boiling down to "dude, we're paper, get it?!" to the stories revolving entirely around arts and crafts. The end result of this is stuff like fighting real-world office supplies in Origami King.

And before you bring up the curses in TTYD, they're just that, curses. They're not presented as natural within the context of TTYD's world.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Box Art And New Screens For Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door On Switch

Eggolor

I must say, I like the use of the old Japanese boxart for the remake, even if I do like the international boxart for the original release. And the screenshots? Gorgeous. The perfect blend of the original pop-up book artstyle with the modern paper-craft style, without shoving the latter in your face like the modern games.

Also, this is a small thing, but thank goodness the white outlines on the characters are gone! I know I'm not the only one who found them obnoxious and immersion breaking.

Re: Nintendo And Illumination Announce New Mario Bros. Animated Movie

Eggolor

@Fake-news For you, maybe. I had my problems with the movie, but it was still a very enjoyable experience for your average Mario fan, and if Illumination and Nintendo take on board any of the fan feedback they received from the first movie, I have no doubt that the sequel will be an even better film.

Re: Feature: Is Any Mario Game Genuinely 'Underrated'? - 10 Super Mario Games To Reconsider

Eggolor

I will forever hold the belief that, barring gameplay, Super Paper Mario is on the same level as the first two games. The soundtrack is one of the most creative and experimental Nintendo has ever put out, the writing is at its absolute peak (with a lot of the jokes and references being suprisingly ahead of their time), and the characters are genuinely among the most charming, memorable and endearing I've ever seen in any video game. All of this is topped off with a story that not only pushes the boundaries of what Mario is capable of exploring, but is so emotionally powerful that I still think about it to this very day.

I can understand disappointment over the shift in gameplay, though I don't think it's nearly as bad as its detractors make it out to be. The main problems are that the combat is overly simplistic and too easy, but at the very least, it isn't tedious, pointless or fundamentally broken, which is more than what I can say for the games that followed this one.

What I'm trying to say is, if people can't appreciate Super Paper Mario for all that it did right, I have to wonder if they ever truly understood what made these games special to begin with. Yes, the gameplay in 64 and TTYD was top tier, but the old Paper Mario games were always so much more than just good RPGs that played well, and Super Paper Mario is proof of that.

Re: Random: Some Rare Fans Are Upset About The Latest Switch Online Announcement

Eggolor

Since when did this site get infiltrated by Xbox fans? You guys know this is a Nintendo site, right? Pure Xbox is that way.

Anyway, for all of you people saying "just buy an Xbox!", I refuse to play Banjo-Kazooie on a Microsoft system because it doesn't belong there. It was made as an N64 exclusive first and foremost, and it will forever have a stronger association with Nintendo than Microsoft.

And no, Nintendo Switch Online is not an option. Call me old fashioned, but I actually like to have some kind of ownership over my games.

Re: UK Charts: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Swings Past The Competition In Its Debut Week

Eggolor

@GravyThief I see. Perhaps you feel that way because it was the very first Mario role-playing game released back in the 90s, so it's very much a product of its time. Those who grew up playing newer RPGs, including Mario & Luigi and early Paper Mario, might not understand the hype behind it. I myself didn't grow up with the game either (my first Mario RPG was Paper Mario 64), and while I do enjoy the succeeding Mario RPGs more, I realise that those games wouldn't exist without the original SNES game, so I have a lot of respect for it for paving the way for some of my favourite games ever to exist.

Re: UK Charts: Mario vs. Donkey Kong Swings Past The Competition In Its Debut Week

Eggolor

Good! Let's hope this proves to Nintendo that we want more of the original puzzle-platformer style of gameplay and less shovelware-tier Lemmings clones.

I have to admit though, I'm kinda surprised that this game is selling better in the UK than Super Mario RPG. This game is nice and all, but Mario RPG is in a league of its own. Any fan of Mario and/or RPGs owes it to themselves to try that game out.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Mario vs. Donkey Kong?

Eggolor

While I gave the original game a 7/10, I'd give this remake an 8/10. The remake is much more visually appealing, and the new music and worlds really elevated the game in my eyes. The time attack mode is also appreciated as a substitute for the old scoring system. The only way this remake could have scored higher in my eyes is if all of the old voice clips from Mario and the Toads were retained.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Getting Mario vs. Donkey Kong For Switch?

Eggolor

I just picked this up today, and right now I'm up to Merry Mini-Land. So far, my impressions are mostly positive, but I have some nitpicks.

On the positive side, I really dig the new graphics and cutscenes, as well as the rearranged music, so overall, the presentation is a big step up from the original. I also prefer the new bonus game that you can play for extra 1-ups compared to the two mini-games in the original (although I will miss DK's "Uh-uh!" voice clip).

As for the negatives, the biggest one is probably the removal of the scoring system. While I myself can take it or leave it, it did add an extra layer of challenge that, so far, is absent in this remake, so others have a right to be upset about its removal. Personally, I'm not super bothered about it since it makes boss battles less stressful.

My other gripe is the removal of certain small details and voice clips, most notably Mario's iconic "'Ey, come back here, you beeg monkey!" line. The original MvDK was one of the few games where Mario regularly spoke in full sentences, so it's unfortunate that they toned down his talkativeness in the remake. It's a small thing, but it's sad to see. Still, not enough to ruin my overall experience, and the remake has a bunch of small details of its own!

Re: Review: Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Switch) - An Easygoing, Kid-Friendly Remake That's Just Fine

Eggolor

Interesting to see that this remake got a lower score than the original, even though from the sound of it, it's the same game but with extra content and greatly enhanced presentation. Still, I'm definitely gonna pick this up at the weekend. It's been far too long since we've had a game in this style, and if this remake does well, hopefully that'll show Nintendo that there's still demand for the old puzzle-platformer style of gameplay.

Re: New Princess Peach: Showtime! Trailer Reveals Four New Outfit Transformations

Eggolor

I gotta admit, the more new costumes I see, the more my interest in this game increases. Still, I don't exactly see myself rushing out to buy this, especially when you consider that the target audience is young girls. This is definitely one of those games where I'll wait for the reviews to see if it's worth picking up.

As for the costumes themselves, Nintendo had to have known what they were doing with Mermaid Peach. It's Splash Woman from Mega Man 9 all over again...

Speaking of which, Mighty Peach gives me big Mega Man vibes. It's like Mighty No. 9 but actually good, hopefully. Phantom Dashing Thief Peach also looks pretty sick. If I do end up getting this game, it'll probably be for those costumes alone.

Re: Anniversary: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Is Now A Decade Old

Eggolor

I finally got around to finishing this game for the first time yesterday. What an absolutely phenomenal gem! It's probably my favourite Donkey Kong Country game tied with either the original or Diddy's Kong Quest. Retro Studios have proven to be a more than worthy successor to Rare as the developers of Donkey Kong Country. And oh man, that soundtrack! David Wise is by far one of the best composers in the business! Bringing him back for Tropical Freeze is one of the best decisions Retro ever made.

Echoing what others have said here, Donkey Kong is long overdue for a new game. It's absolutely criminal the way he has been treated by Nintendo over the years, especially when you consider that he's one of the grandfathers of gaming mascots along with Mario and Pac-Man. Here's hoping for news of something soon. I'd even take a Donkey Kong 64 remake/sequel at this point.

Honestly though, at the end of the day, I just want to hear more DKC music by David Wise. Seriously, that man is a musical genius.

Re: Random: It's Been 5 Years Since Metroid Prime 4 Was Rebooted

Eggolor

This one game's development cycle is single-handedly responsible for depriving not just one, but two franchises of a new instalment for years, the other being Donkey Kong Country. Honestly, I don't care if I sound impatient here, I just want them to hurry up so we can get a new DKC game already. 10 years without a new entry in what used to be one of Nintendo's biggest franchises is unacceptable, and this isn't even the first time this has happened!

Seriously, Retro Studios needs a lot more staff if they don't want to go another decade with zero output.
