I think it depends on which way you look at it... as a Pikmin game, it obviously own't be as good as a 2D game... but I'm personally not a big fan of this sort of 2D game, so the Pikmin twist is actually an improvement upon that from my perspective.
Many people are jumping to a lot of conclusions with this new Pokemon game to the point that they're refusing to acknowledge how vague the initial announcement was... all we can do for now is speculate.
Seems to me like the Metroid amiibo is the only one really worth getting, purely for the extra difficulty mode. Also, I personally don't like the idea of having to buy two different amiibo of the same character in order to unlock anything... having different recovery abilities is fine, and the Metroid series amiibo could do with a bit of a boost in that respect to make it more appealing, but I think the unlockables should be the same.
I had a quick go at salmon run the other day... it's a lot of fun, but I'm still working on convincing my friends to get Switches so that we can play multiplayer together.
I've got my original boy and squid amiibo and looking at the rest of the unlockables I think I'll just stick with them... the Squinja set is the only one I'd really be tempted by, but I don't think the bonuses are worth it for my play style.
This whole event has been an utter piss-take... they were clearly not ready for something like this... even without the server problems, the game has been plagued with bugs since the new gyms went live.
Now they're too busy cleaning up their mess to actually respond to the questions that need answering... most importantly, how long will the legendaries will be available for? Different people seem to have interpreted the initial announcement they gave at the event differently... some think it meant they would only be available for 48 hours, while others think they'll be available permanently... and further announcements haven't referred to how long they will be available. If they are available permanently, that's fine... but if they are only available for a limited time, then that really sucks, given how hard they are to catch and all the bugs that are getting in the way... they need to clarify this.
Hopefully once they go worldwide they'll have a reasonable frequency... if they're too rare or at awkward times it could be difficult to gather a large enough group.
Personally, I'm not that big of a fan of all of these retro mini consoles... I'd prefer it if they just released the controller as a peripheral for the Switch and bundled it with download codes for the games to get them on the e-shop instead... that way you'd also be able to purchase other games separately and still use the controller to play them.
@vladez You're jumping to conclusions with what GF said in the E3 video... They never said it would be the next Pokemon game... they actually said it was likely years away from release, so there could easily be other Pokemon games released before them. They also never said it would be part of the existing series... they said it would be a core title, but made no reference to the existing series, and a franchise can have multiple series at it's core.
Looking at the bigger picture, GF have almost doubled in size in recent years, so now have the capacity to have two major projects on the go at any one time, putting them in the perfect position to expand the Pokemon franchise with a second core series of games.
@MinecraftGreek What you're proposing would basically just be a new handheld console that has partial compatibility with the Switch. Any games that were designed specifically for TV or tabletop mode would basically be worthless, essentially creating a separate library for it, and without the ability to switch modes, you couldn't even call it a Switch any more. Plus, as a handheld, the Switch has a fairly short battery life, so would really need a higher capacity battery in order to make a proper handheld-only version, but that would just increase the price once again.
@MinecraftGreek The 3DS was heavily overpriced at launch, with an estimated production cost of only $100 compared to the $250 price tag... but that resulted in poor sales, which led Nintendo to cut the price within six months. The Switch on the other hand, has an estimated production cost of around $250 compared to the $300 price tag, so it's unlikely they'll drop the price by much, if at all... not that they have to, seeing as how well it's still selling.
Also, it wasn't the console itself that wasn't recommended for under 7's... it was just the use of the 3D effect (they were advised to use it in 2D mode only)... and there was no medical evidence to support that... it just seemed to be a precaution on Nintendo's part.
Removing the 3D effect from the 2DS did cut the price, but it wasn't an essential feature of the system... there is nothing like that in the Switch that could be removed without substantially altering the operation of the console.
@DanteSolablood I didn't say it was all pointless... a couple of the changes are handy, but that doesn't mean they should have been a priority... they could easily have waited. And I'm not referring to trading and PVP either... I'm referring to all of the bugs... the game is still rather unstable for a lot of people... they should deal with that before they add anything else to the game as it'll just cause more problems.
Just look at the remote feeding feature... it's probably one of the better points of the update, but even then it's usefulness is debatable... and it's already been disabled because they've found a bug in it.
As for the legendary stuff... that's not going to do any good for people who are still experiencing bugs with raids... they've addressed only one of the more minor issues with it in this update, but there are still other issues that are far more common. If they launch the legendary raids with the game in it's current state, they'll just be swamped with complaints from people being locked out of raids, wasting raid passes, and not getting the chance to capture the Pokemon after the raid.
Niantic are great developers when they pace themselves, but when they try to rush to meet a deadline they just get sloppy... too many additions in a short space of time doesn't give them time to deal with the inevitable bugs that result, and the bugs just build up, causing more problems. This is why they had so much trouble at launch... they rushed to get the game out in time for summer... and they're basically doing the same thing now... rushing to get the legendary Pokemon in for the anniversary.
I think they're overlooking the issue of the price tag... the Switch is too expensive for a lot of people... especially younger fans, who are also less likely to have a decent smartphone to play games on. They need to keep a budget console on the market, and that's where handhelds like the 3DS come in. They could theoretically release a cut-down version of the Switch to fill this gap, but they'd likely have to cut it down so much in order to keep the price down that it'd probably need it's own library of games, essentially making it a separate console.
Most of this is utterly pointless... seems like Niantic's priorities are still not where they should be... all of that for only a couple of the many bugs to be fixed... and there's no way of knowing if it's even been fixed properly... they keep saying they've fixed specific bugs, but they obviously haven't as they are continuing to occur.
Given the current state of the game, I wouldn't be surprised if they run into some major problems during their big anniversary event this weekend.
The big question for me would be how they handle it post-release. I loved the first game when it was released, but they just seemed to go overboard with all of the additions and balancing updates, and it just seemed to make it more unbalanced than when they started... some of the new weapons had a noticeable advantage over all of the existing ones, while some of the older ones got nerfed for stupid reasons, putting them at a disadvantage. TBH, it has been a while since I last played, so they may have fixed this now, but the fact that it got to the point where I stopped playing as a result is why I'm concerned about the same thing happening again.
I have an Anker power bank already and it is great... but I don't really see the point in spending more money just for a Pokemon themed one when it's just going to be sitting in a bag/pocket almost the entire time.
The capacities are also at the lower end of their range... mine is a 20100mAh one and in one day of heavy gameplay I can go through about a quarter of that... meaning that the smaller of these ones will only last a day with that level of use, while the larger ones would only last two... so they might be a bit risky if you plan to use them a lot.
I think the sensible thing for them to do would be to do ports of older games to test the market (possibly even only on the e-shop)... they'd be easier/cheaper to port than some of their newer titles, but will allow them to see which of their games are more popular on the Switch so that they can more efficiently focus future development for the system.
My thinking for this is mainly due to what happened with the Wii U... third parties completely mis-judged the target audience, causing the games they released on the system to sell badly, which led them to cut back their support for the system... and I really don't want the same to happen with the Switch.
If they are waiting to judge the target audience of the Switch, this could explain why they haven't yet announced which systems Beyond Good and Evil 2 will be released on... the original game could be one of the ones they're planning to release.
Debatable whether or not this will get through the legal side of things... they may have avoided the copyright issues with the characters, and have probably rebuilt the mechanics from the ground up while working on Project M, but given their history it would be pretty easy to argue that it was their intention to make it as a clone, rather than being their own take on the genre, which is where legal action could be taken.
As for how well it could potentially do... I think it'll be a niche title... it will have fans, but the lack of popular characters and the relatively unpolished look of the game will probably put a lot of people off... making it free-to-play will help when it's first released, but I expect it's popularity will dwindle fairly quickly.
I got the Ambassador Edition New 3DS to replace my original 3DS (it was good timing, as my old 3DS's battery was almost dead) and I think it's great, but does have a few downsides. Firstly, the faceplates... they're a great concept, but they just seemed too expensive, and most of the better designs were released as console bundle exclusives, so I ended up sticking with the ambassador edition ones. I think a better idea would have been to release a set of clear faceplates that you could insert printed images behind, so that they could more easily release special designs as inserts within game cases, or just allow you to make your own designs. Then there's the price... the higher specs made the New 3DS XL enter the market as the premium option... with the 2DS established as the budget option, the New 3DS had to compete with the 3DS XL as the standard option, but it's price tag was just too high... and now we have the New 2DS that fills that role perfectly.
Kingdom Hearts is a series that I've been tempted by for a while but never got round to trying... so if it did come out on the Switch (even if it does come later than other versions) I probably would get it... but wouldn't be bothered if it didn't.
One player with a dodgy connection can cause problems for everyone else, so if this has the added benefit of dealing with this, then I'm happy with it.
However, as others have mentioned, the impact dropped connections have on your rank would need to be taken into consideration... it's unfair if a single dropped connection causes you to lose a ton of points. Something similar happened to me in MK8, and put me off playing online for quite a while... but in that case it wasn't a rage quit or a dodgy connection... it was my friend messing about as player 2... he decided to go round the track backwards for a laugh and got both of us kicked out... and when I reconnected I found I'd lost around 1000 points.
Already preordered along with the amiibo... I'm not usually a fan of side-scrolling games, but I love Pikmin games, and the Pikmin spin seems to remove the majority of the things I dislike about side-scrollers.
Sucks that they haven't announced a safari zone event for the UK yet, but I'm hoping they'll do something similar once they can sort out a partner for it in the UK. Paris or Amsterdam would probably be the easiest ones for me to get to, but the cost just wouldn't be worth it.
I've noticed some places are still referring to these cover Pokemon as Solgaleo and Lunala when it actually looks like they're new forms of Necrozma, following a similar idea to what they done with Kyurem.
I'd prefer it if they just gave us a decent web browser... YouTube is the streaming service I'd use most, but the Wii U app was awful... I ended up just using the browser instead most of the time. As long as they don't block the Switch in order to force us to use their apps, most other streaming services typically work through browsers as well.
I think the criticism of the Amiibo is a bit off... it implies that they were needed to unlock the full single-player mode, which is mis-leading. The single-player mode was restricted to only the splattershot, and could be fully completed without any amiibo. The Amiibo provided additional challenges that allowed you to revisit select levels with different weapons in order to unlock special gear... basically just acting as paid DLC. And saying that this is not the case in Splatoon 2 also seems to be questionable, seeing as they've already revealed Amiibo exclusive gear, so there is a good chance they'll once again offer additional challenges in order to unlock that gear.
I genuinely thought Splatoon already had off-TV play... not that I can remember trying... I may just be thinking of 2-player when one player would use the gamepad and the other used the TV.
I would quite often press the minus button in games that weren't advertised as having off-TV play just on the off-chance, and did find that some did have the option regardless... can't remember if it worked for Splatoon though.
@Anti-Matter If it's plain Ramune, I'd be lemon and lime (the name Ramune comes from lemonade)... that's clear, but the blue could just be to show the liquid. There are also a few flavours with a blue colouring, with Blueberry or Blue Hawaii (a tropical fruit mix) probably being most likely.
@Angelic_Lapras_King I didn't mean that they weren't in it (I couldn't actually remember if they were or weren't at the time)... I just meant that if you were talking about two other characters that you'd expect to be in a Pokemon movie, it would be them rather than Misty and Brock.
I thought this article would be about Jessie and James, not Misty and Brock... Misty and Brock are long gone... Jessie and James are the only other characters who I'm pretty sure have been in every single Pokemon movie so far.
I didn't think for a second that it wouldn't be Link we'd be playing as in the DLC... it would just be far too complicated for them to add another playable character just for the DLC.
What I would question though is the part about it being set after Ganon's defeat... this could easily be a mis-translation/mis-interpretation... I think it's more likely that it'll be unlocked after you defeat Ganon, but still take place before defeating him (on a 'starred' save file). Zelda games always allow you to resume just before fighting the boss so that you can easily go back to do other things before fighting them again, but if they continued the game after defeating Ganon, this wouldn't be possible (assuming it would use the same save file). And if they did use a separate save file, then this would make it difficult for anything obtained in the main game/DLC to be carried over to the other, and it wouldn't make sense for you to swap back and forth between the two.
Morons like Lanning are the ones to blame for the lack of third-party success, not Nintendo. They just automatically assume that their games will do well, and when they don't they look to blame someone else rather than acknowledge their own mistakes... poor development, poor marketing, poor timing, poor choice of audience... third party titles on the Wii and Wii U have been plagued by these sorts of issues, and have flopped as a result... the only ones that succeeded are those that either learned from their mistakes, or were smart enough not to make them to begin with. If anything, the fact that many of these morons have pulled away from Nintendo after the Wii U is actually a good thing for the Switch... without their titles polluting the Switch's library, it'll give the console a much better public image, improving sales, and potentially even encouraging these morons to finally re-address their approach to Nintendo consoles, as they should have done years ago.
The original looked like a Switch icon... this one just looks like a generic icon like you'd get on something like a smartphone, and sticks out like a sore thumb as a result. The most puzzling thing isn't people's responses to it... it's the fact that they changed it in the first place.
The prices are probably just placeholders... I believe that's the most expensive a regular amiibo has ever been (the BoTW Guardian amiibo)... which they're probably just using as a precaution until they get official confirmation of the price... at which point their preorder price guarantee will lower the price for anyone who had already preordered.
@retribution Charts and markets are two different things. Just because the Switch has come in at the top of the chart does not mean it's a threat to Sony... the PS4 has continued to sell well since the Switch's release... it's market has hardly been affected, suggesting that the Switch is in a different market, just as they said.
I can't help but think that their revenue will drop substantially with the new gyms... they've made it so much easier for proper players to earn coins. Because of the action being taken against spoofers, my daily rewards have gone up from 20-30 coins per day to 30-50 coins per day. Before I would only spend money on the game when I was in urgent need of something, but now that I've got more coins coming in, I can buy things in advance, so will probably not need to spend money on the game again at this rate.
If I had to guess, I'd say the trial was originally supposed to take place in one big open space, rather than a series of chambers, and now the chambers sit within what's left of that space.
If you ask me, GAME have always had one major problem that keeps getting in their way... greed. They try to get as much profit per item as they can, but that puts their prices too high compared to their competition, who are far more successful with lower profit per item, but higher sales overall. I go into my local GAME stores on a fairly regular basis, but hardly ever buy anything... I mainly just go to check their prices so that I know how much I can save buy buying things elsewhere.
Seems like an interesting game, but I was surprised when it was announced for the Switch... it just doesn't seem like the sort of title that would be worthwhile putting that much effort into porting over.
Stop asking... Nintendo has always had a different userbase to the other consoles, so it obviously won't sell as well, causing a backlash with the developers which will put them off developing for the Switch in the future. The fact that they're not shows that they're thinking about it properly now (not just jumping in head-first as they've done in the past) and are putting their priorities in the right places, which is better for everyone.
@LegacySmikey This is useful for the raids alone... level 4 raids are the only ones that are really worthwhile, so most people save their free raid pass for them, and tend to gather at them when they appear. But if a level 4 raid appears out of range of you (can easily happen in my town, as the gyms are quite spread out) then you can easily miss it, and there will be less people left to do later raids, lowering your chance of success... GymHuntr completely solves this problem.
The guys behind the site have managed to slip under Niantic's anti-tracker radar so far, but now that they're getting more attention I doubt they'll be able to get away with it for much longer, which is a shame, as they're pretty handy to have.
I got the shorts when they were first released on the e-shop... I've loved Pikmin ever since my friend lent me the first game... it's one of the few games that I'm happy to replay multiple times. Even the new game... I'm not that interested in side-scrollers usually, but having tried the demo, the new game looks great... I can't wait.
What put me off the original 2DS was solely the inability to fold it... the fact that they haven't just fixed that issue, but they've also given it various other upgrades is just great.
What's the point of porting an MMO to the Switch? As soon as a game requires a constant internet connection it loses the portable aspect that is a major selling point for the Switch. Pretty much any other Final Fantasy game would be a better choice for release on the Switch rather than XIV.

Re: Preview: Whistling for Attention in Hey! Pikmin
Already preordered along with the amiibo... I'm not usually a fan of side-scrolling games, but I love Pikmin games, and the Pikmin spin seems to remove the majority of the things I dislike about side-scrollers.
Re: Pokémon GO Worldwide Events Detailed, Including New Safari Zone
Sucks that they haven't announced a safari zone event for the UK yet, but I'm hoping they'll do something similar once they can sort out a partner for it in the UK.
Paris or Amsterdam would probably be the easiest ones for me to get to, but the cost just wouldn't be worth it.
Re: Nintendo Unveils Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Dual Pack and Fan Editions
I've noticed some places are still referring to these cover Pokemon as Solgaleo and Lunala when it actually looks like they're new forms of Necrozma, following a similar idea to what they done with Kyurem.
Re: NicoNico Launches on the Switch in Japan This Week
I'd prefer it if they just gave us a decent web browser... YouTube is the streaming service I'd use most, but the Wii U app was awful... I ended up just using the browser instead most of the time.
As long as they don't block the Switch in order to force us to use their apps, most other streaming services typically work through browsers as well.
Re: Preview: Going Solo in Splatoon 2's Single Player Hero Mode
Re: Teased Wii U Mod Switches Things Up by Outputting TV View on GamePad
I genuinely thought Splatoon already had off-TV play... not that I can remember trying... I may just be thinking of 2-player when one player would use the gamepad and the other used the TV.
I would quite often press the minus button in games that weren't advertised as having off-TV play just on the off-chance, and did find that some did have the option regardless... can't remember if it worked for Splatoon though.
Re: Random: McDonald's Japan Thinks You Might Like A Broccoli-Flavoured Pokémon McFlurry
Re: The Latest Pokémon Movie Is Ditching Two Of The Franchise's Most Famous Characters
@Angelic_Lapras_King I didn't mean that they weren't in it (I couldn't actually remember if they were or weren't at the time)... I just meant that if you were talking about two other characters that you'd expect to be in a Pokemon movie, it would be them rather than Misty and Brock.
Re: The Latest Pokémon Movie Is Ditching Two Of The Franchise's Most Famous Characters
I thought this article would be about Jessie and James, not Misty and Brock... Misty and Brock are long gone... Jessie and James are the only other characters who I'm pretty sure have been in every single Pokemon movie so far.
Re: Europe Is Getting The Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Champions amiibo Four-Pack
I'm not expecting their functionality to be worthwhile to get them, so I'll probably pass.
Re: You'll Still Be Playing As Link In Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's Next DLC Pack
Re: Oddworld Creator Lorne Lanning "Has No Faith" In Switch
Re: Random: Internet Reacts Badly To The New Snake Pass Menu Icon
The original looked like a Switch icon... this one just looks like a generic icon like you'd get on something like a smartphone, and sticks out like a sore thumb as a result.
The most puzzling thing isn't people's responses to it... it's the fact that they changed it in the first place.
Re: Deals: Be Quick And Grab The New Metroid And Super Mario Odyssey amiibo
The prices are probably just placeholders... I believe that's the most expensive a regular amiibo has ever been (the BoTW Guardian amiibo)... which they're probably just using as a precaution until they get official confirmation of the price... at which point their preorder price guarantee will lower the price for anyone who had already preordered.
Re: Sales Data For 2017 Reveals Nintendo Is Killing It In Japan
@retribution Charts and markets are two different things.
Just because the Switch has come in at the top of the chart does not mean it's a threat to Sony... the PS4 has continued to sell well since the Switch's release... it's market has hardly been affected, suggesting that the Switch is in a different market, just as they said.
Re: Pokémon GO Passes 752 Million Downloads, $1.2 Billion Revenue
I can't help but think that their revenue will drop substantially with the new gyms... they've made it so much easier for proper players to earn coins.
Because of the action being taken against spoofers, my daily rewards have gone up from 20-30 coins per day to 30-50 coins per day.
Before I would only spend money on the game when I was in urgent need of something, but now that I've got more coins coming in, I can buy things in advance, so will probably not need to spend money on the game again at this rate.
Re: Random: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild's New DLC Contains A Weird Hidden Area
If I had to guess, I'd say the trial was originally supposed to take place in one big open space, rather than a series of chambers, and now the chambers sit within what's left of that space.
Re: Beleaguered UK Retailer GAME Blames Lack Of Switch Stock For Profit Warning
If you ask me, GAME have always had one major problem that keeps getting in their way... greed.
They try to get as much profit per item as they can, but that puts their prices too high compared to their competition, who are far more successful with lower profit per item, but higher sales overall.
I go into my local GAME stores on a fairly regular basis, but hardly ever buy anything... I mainly just go to check their prices so that I know how much I can save buy buying things elsewhere.
Re: Rumour: Porting Steep to the Switch Is Posing a Steep Challenge
Seems like an interesting game, but I was surprised when it was announced for the Switch... it just doesn't seem like the sort of title that would be worthwhile putting that much effort into porting over.
Re: Sledgehammer Games Has a Definitive Answer on Call of Duty: WWII for Nintendo Switch - "No"
Stop asking...
Re: Updated GymHuntr Site Now Helps You Track Pokémon GO Raid Battles
@LegacySmikey This is useful for the raids alone... level 4 raids are the only ones that are really worthwhile, so most people save their free raid pass for them, and tend to gather at them when they appear.
But if a level 4 raid appears out of range of you (can easily happen in my town, as the gyms are quite spread out) then you can easily miss it, and there will be less people left to do later raids, lowering your chance of success... GymHuntr completely solves this problem.
Re: Updated GymHuntr Site Now Helps You Track Pokémon GO Raid Battles
@Bunkerneath Click in another location to place the marker... it should update straight away with all nearby gyms, if not, just hit the scan button.
Re: Updated GymHuntr Site Now Helps You Track Pokémon GO Raid Battles
The guys behind the site have managed to slip under Niantic's anti-tracker radar so far, but now that they're getting more attention I doubt they'll be able to get away with it for much longer, which is a shame, as they're pretty handy to have.
Re: My Nintendo in North America Has Been Updated with New Pikmin Rewards
I got the shorts when they were first released on the e-shop... I've loved Pikmin ever since my friend lent me the first game... it's one of the few games that I'm happy to replay multiple times.
Even the new game... I'm not that interested in side-scrollers usually, but having tried the demo, the new game looks great... I can't wait.
Re: Nintendo Gives Details and Some History on Midna's Helmet in Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC
I would love to see footage of the prototypes that used Tetra.
Re: Snake Pass Celebrates Summer Solstice With 40 Percent Discount And A Hint Of Upcoming DLC
Might be tempted to get this now.
Re: Hardware Review: New Nintendo 2DS XL
What put me off the original 2DS was solely the inability to fold it... the fact that they haven't just fixed that issue, but they've also given it various other upgrades is just great.
Re: Square Enix Has Been 'Tenacious' in Ongoing Conversations About Final Fantasy XIV on Switch
What's the point of porting an MMO to the Switch?
As soon as a game requires a constant internet connection it loses the portable aspect that is a major selling point for the Switch.
Pretty much any other Final Fantasy game would be a better choice for release on the Switch rather than XIV.
