Re: Bandai Namco Files a Patent for Pac-Man Maker

DragonEleven

I'm sure there are a few people who would love this, but there's just not enough to Pac-Man for it to appeal to the vast majority of people.
I mean... what would it even consists of? Dots, walls and cherries? Hardly enough there to make it worthwhile. Even if they allowed you to set custom behaviour patterns for the ghosts, that probably wouldn't help much.
The only way I can really see it being worthwhile for them would be as a free-to-play smartphone app to get people interested in the franchise ahead of the release of a proper game... a marketing tool.

Of course, there's also the possibility that the idea of it being a stage builder is just a mis-association due to Mario Maker... it may actually be something completely different... maybe Pac-Man will be going to meet his maker in a new game.

Re: Layton's Mystery Journey is Coming to 3DS in Japan on 20th July

DragonEleven

Love the Layton games... glad they're returning to the traditional style as well as the smartphone games didn't come close.

I get the feeling it will turn out that Katrielle isn't really his daughter... she looks more like Flora (Layton's adopted daughter) than Hershel, and her ability to talk to animals reminds me of Luke... so perhaps she's really their daughter and merely claims to be Hershel's daughter to attract more business (or to lure out whoever kidnapped him).

Re: The Switch Mini Isn't Real Yet, But These Mock-Ups Sure Are Convincing

DragonEleven

I can't help but think that they're missing the real point here... the 2DS and Wii Mini stripped out features to make the console cheaper for younger players, not just reduce the size... the only time they've reduced the size has been a result of technology advancing enough to allow it, and they actually seem more interested in making handhelds larger nowadays so that they are more comfortable to use.

If they were to make a budget version of the Switch for younger players, then I'd expect them to strip out the portability first... removing the screen and batteries would substantially cut the cost of the console, and they would be able to use cheaper non-portable components within the console itself to further cut costs.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Will Last About Three Hours on the Switch's Handheld Mode

DragonEleven

The Switch is more like a home console that can be taken on the go, rather than a portable console that can be plugged into a TV, so 3 hours is plenty... it's more than any other home console.
I actually prefer to play in handheld mode even when at home as it frees up the TV for others and I've gotten into the habit of moving from room to room while playing, but I think I've only ever had a problem with a low battery interrupting gameplay once, and that wasn't long after it was released... the rest of the time my play sessions tend to last for under 3 hours anyway.

As for MK8DX... I have the original on Wii U already (two copies, actually, due to a shipping error resulting in me being sent a digital code when my physical copy was delayed) so I was reluctant about getting it again, but it is such a fun game I know I will play it a lot, especially now that I can take it out with me to play with others away from a TV, so I've given in and pre-orderd it.

Re: Poll: Where Do You Currently Stand on ARMS and Splatoon 2

DragonEleven

Not too fussed about ARMS... I think the punching mechanic is promising, but restricting it to fighting is a little unimaginative... if there were other game modes, then I might be more interested.

More interested in Splatoon 2... loved the original, wanted more offline content, but the addition and rebalancing of weapons spoiled the online for me... and I still need to see how well they've done the balancing on this one, as I was busy during the last demo.

Re: Review: LEGO City: Undercover (Switch)

DragonEleven

Good to see context being taken into consideration with reviews... far too many reviewers rate games in comparison to old games rather than current games... just because a game would have scored higher than another game several years ago does not mean it should score higher than it today.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

DragonEleven

@DanteSolablood You're mixing up fad mentality and general popularity... things typically grow in popularity over time until they establish a stable fanbase... it would form a graph with a roughly hyperbolic curve to it's peak followed by a steady decline... spikes in that graph would be the result of fad mentality, which can occur at any point, even at the very start, as was the case with Pokemon.
The only reason for there to be such a spike in popularity at the start of a franchise's lifespan would be fad mentality.

Also, just because the TCG has faded from the public spotlight does not mean it's dead... it was one of the most prominent aspects of the fad mentality at the time, but is still going strong within the fanbase.
And I never said Gen 2 wasn't in the works, only that the evidence at the time was inconclusive, and that it was a bad idea as it would have needed to be handled carefully... and I stand by that, as I don't think they done a very good job with how they introduced Gen 2, and think the game will suffer in the long term as a result.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

DragonEleven

@DanteSolablood The difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 was closer to ten million... reducing Gen 1 by a few million would still leave it substantially above Gen 2.

Repetitive gameplay is a complaint seen in every franchise, but that does not correlate with a substantial drop in popularity like we saw with Pokemon... and the loss of Pokemon between generations would only have applied to the Gen 3 drop, not the Gen 2 drop.

And "because it was something new and had good word of mouth" is fad mentality in a nutshell! No new game has such a huge peak in popularity without fad mentality being involved... they usually peak at least a few instalments in.

It does sound like you missed the fad mentality of the Pokemon games due to your age... the target audience was primary school age, so that's where the fad mentality would have been most noticeable... I got Pokemon Blue around my 9th birthday, so I was right in the middle of it.

Re: Aonuma Says That Open World Is Here to Stay in Zelda Games

DragonEleven

The problem is that this doesn't actually give the scale of the 'open-air' world he's talking about, and it only really refers to the overworld... future games could still have an open-air overworld, but keep that overworld relatively small (in comparison to BotW) to give a larger focus on dungeons... or even have the game divided between multiple worlds, with each being open-air, but still smaller individually.
My point is that there's a lot of flexibility within the implications of that statement, so we can't really tell how it will affect future games.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

DragonEleven

@DanteSolablood Again... I'm not saying it was a fad, only that people treated it as a fad... that doesn't mean it's not still popular, only that some people only liked it initially because it was the popular thing at the time.
I don't understand how you could have not experienced that... were you living under a rock?

You just seem to be grasping at straws in a poor attempt to avoid associating Pokémon's initial popularity with fad mentality.
The Japanese release of blue would not account for such a vast difference in sales... excluding it would drop the total by only a few million at best.
Your Call of Duty example is also nonsense, as they've seen an overall increase over their lifespan... one or two have seen a drop in sales, but that is completely different.

Re: Fresh Data Shows That Four Out Of Five Pokémon GO Players Have Given Up Hunting

DragonEleven

@DanteSolablood What about the DS? That's sold more than any other Nintendo console, but the main Pokémon game pairs on the system still didn't pass the 20million mark. That just goes to prove that console sales do not have that substantial of an impact on the popularity of Pokémon games.

Did you not know people who only liked Pokémon just because it was the current popular thing? I knew loads of them.

Re: Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Players Are Finding Inventive Ways To Beat Its Toughest Enemy

DragonEleven

The 20 second kill is certainly not mastery of the game... they've just got all of the most overpowered equipment... it's probably the BotW equivalent of pay-to-win... there's next to no skill involved.
The crouching against the club spin is a clever trick... each attack has an easy way to deal with it, but that one I hadn't figured out yet, so is handy to know.
The pot lid and ladle is the most impressive, as that takes the most skill to achieve, but I doubt they can do it every time... they were probably using the barbarian set to shorten the fight to reduce their chance of failure.
The magnesis one isn't too hard either... keeping your distance is fairly easy to do (especially against a spear-user), and magnesis is an easy way to do damage at range... plus it helps that they were only facing a standard Lynel.

Re: There's a Spring Event Coming to Fire Emblem Heroes

DragonEleven

Got bored of this a while ago... it just takes too long to level up heroes properly, and the heavy reliance on luck when getting new characters gets frustrating when some characters are seriously overpowered.
Might go back to it for this event though... just to get the bunny girls.

Re: My Child Lebensborn Adds a Switch Stretch Goal

DragonEleven

While I have nothing against the game, I don't want to see the Switch receiving smartphone/tablet ports like this... most people have a smartphone nowadays anyway, so there's no need for it.
It seems like people are just seeing the Switch as a tablet and using that as an excuse to milk as much money out of their games as possible.
It's a poor use of the Switch's potential, and could easily lower people's opinions of the Switch as a result... just like what happened with all of the shovelware on the Wii.
I'm not saying smartphone ports should be prevented completely... some will likely be good matches for the Switch... but Nintendo will need to be careful to restrict this.
