Blaster Master Zero for Switch and 3DS is the game that keeps on giving; the next software update will feature two indie game legends that are ready to venture into the mutant-filled subterranean depths. Yes, soon you'll be able to play Blaster Master as Shantae or Shovel Knight.
Version 1.3 of Blaster Master Zero will go live on 6th July, at which point the Shantae character DLC will be available on the Switch/3DS eShop. Shovel Knight will hit the eShop on 3rd August, and both characters - just like Gunvolt and Ekoro before them - will be available for free for the first two weeks after they release. After their free download periods are over the characters will be available to purchase for $1.99USD (UK/Euro prices TBC).
Based on how well the characters appear to be integrated into the world of Blaster Master Zero in the trailer above, it looks like we're in for a real treat.

I'm digging it
Ok now I need this game.
@HyrulianOfHyrule And whipping it.
Damn this game is getting crazier at every update. We're receiving lots of love from the devs. And for free too !
Cool! I still never tried this game yet
After beating the game and getting a terribly depressing ending, I hadn't gone back. The other two DLC characters didn't interest me. Now with these two though I'll definitely go back!!
This game is becoming the "indie cross-over game".
Wich I like!
@Whopper744 You didn't get the good ending, you even missed an entire stage!
What the frig! Insanity! I love it! Way to represent, Indies!
Well I wasn't going to get this because I had no interest in the original, but I guess I'm getting it now
Now I have a reason to play it again.
Shovel Knight? Looks like this game is moving up my buy list!
This is great! This game is awesome! Best mega man game in years. And now more cool characters. I hope they true to their game and shovel knight gets to bounce on his shovel etc...
This game just keeps on delivering. hmm, I wonder if "Mighty Gunvolt Burst" will also have this sort of DLC...
@Donutman Just look at the video.
Really amazing how faithful they are to their respective games, this is some excellent work.
All the DLC and updates had made me want this, but now I need to buy it!
I like the way they did the mini sprites.
I am liking this alot!!
SHANTAE?!
WHAT!
God, I wanted to be done with this game, but it keeps dragging me back!
Cool, shame i don't own the game, and didn't find it interesting enough to buy. Love that they are still supporting it though!
Never thought I'd be playing BM again like this but damn, Inti-Creates has sold me and I'm all in. Now Shovel Knight and Shantae. Good goobidy goo. Can't wait to see what's next from Inti-Creates.
I think I missed Ekoro, but I'll be ready for Shantae and Shovel Knight.
LOL.
That Shovel Knight was bouncing on the ground with his shovel like Scrooge McDuck from Duck Tales NES.
That's just sick. Still don't have this game but I may need this game now.
This look super cool looks like worth picking up there seems to be a lot of cool little indie titles appearing on the switch.
This is one of the best games to play on the go. Really glad to see they are adding more value to an already fantastic experience.
Free DLC??!
Game is so good already
Wow, I'm getting this
I played the demo and it wasnt for me, but glad to see its still being supported with new content
Ah balls, missed the first two characters when they were free then. I'll won't make the same mistake here though.
Sigh, I need to pick this up now.
Wow, this looks amazing. I didn't pick this game up but I did love Sunsoft back in the day, this does indeed make it more tempting, just the love and affection they've shown these characters
This is really cool. I love when collaborations occur that make everyone involved happy. Now maybe we can get Pit in Blaster Master. C'mon Nintendo.
THIS is how you do DLC on consoles. Take note of it!
@Mopati After getting frustrated with a stealth top down part, I kind of rushed and beat it I guess.
This is amazing! If you don't have this game I just don't know what you are waiting for. This is truly a gem on the Switch.
I may have to buy this now that Shantae is in it. I'll just pretend it's a new Shantae game.
Pretty cool looking. Wish I enjoyed the gameplay of Blaster Master Zero. Sigh. Others shall enjoy the further adventures of Shovelknight, Shantae, and Gunvolt for me.
What a cool surprise! Shantae for the win!
This game has virtually paid for itself now. Cost me £9 and I think the dlc was like £1.59 after the free period ended, so this is already over £6 in free DLC. Next 2 characters I and any other early adopters will have made money,
Now THAT is how you treat early adopters well!
EDIT £1.79 so even better than I though. It's £7.16 of free DLC so far.
I've should start playing this again, provided I can put BoTW down.
My mind is having difficulty processing all this free post-release content.
Not that it isn't appreciated! Three cheers for Inti Creates! Hip hip hooray!
Saw the headline and was surprised. Watched the video and was surprised again! Impressive. Hope to get these when free!
Aw nuts I completely forgot to download the 2nd dlc character when it was free. I suppose I need to set notifications for this.
Oh and while we're at it, add Quote from Cave Story, that would make my day.
This is pretty awesome news! I wasn't expecting characters from other companies to be making appearances as DLC. Just like Gunvolt, they look like they play pretty much the same way that they do in their own games, which is fantastic and I love that Inti Creates goes the extra mile to do that.
@Shiryu
The developers have already confirmed that that Mighty Gunvolt Burst will have Ekoro for DLC, as well as "many more characters to come". Here is the source.
Another "indie cross-over game." I am loving it! I got Runbow for the same reason on Wii U!
Never thought of buying this game and now I'm genuinely interested! Gonna buy for sure!
(If I'll have enough money by then, currently saving up for Splatoon 2 and accessories for my Switch)
Dangggg so awesome!
That is so cool!
Looks pretty cool.
Things are going to get hairy! I enjoyed playing this game with my brother. The inclusion of Shantae is really cool!
Honestly, this just makes me want Blaster Master to be continued as a bigger series. Truly novel concepts back then, and still quite fun, today.
@OdnetninAges Good, good...
Shovel Knight enjoys a good crossover. How many has he had now?
I like the idea of a period where the update is free.
It only costs a symbolic amount after that, but it will help create a sense of urgency around getting the game if anybody has been dragging their feet.
That is pretty cool.
@crackafreeze I wasn't thinking, I meant metroid
..more?.. that's great!..
If you activate the DLC during the free period Do you keep the characters after the free period? Or do you have to pay for them after the period ends?
@Jim_Purcell ..they're yours to keep, you only pay to download them after their free period..
2 bucks for each character is kinda expensive, but it's nice they'll be free for awhile.
If I buy the game now, do I get them both for free?
Updated..got it!
Apart from Zero being a fantastic game overall, Shantae adds a whole new dimension to the game. Not only does the Inticreates take on her design look fantastic, but she plays exactly as you'd expect. Spells, dances, hair-whipping, it's all there and she feels as natural as can be.
Can't wait for Shovel Knight!
@Fbigabig why didn't you get this game? Its clearly a metroidvania with zelda dungeon exploration.
Now if only I can find a halo fps game with dungeon exploration like Zelda
Id say metroid prime but its not cinematic enough like halo and the dungeon aspect is limited to draw calls (mind you, prime has some labyrinths but zelda dungeons it doesn't. )
@crackafreeze yes, 2 years after metroid on the Famicom disk system
Sunsoft released blaster master (likely on famicom cart) in Japan and zero is akin to zero mission very metroid in the exploration and very zelda in the dungeons (caves)
I really want metroid dlc so i can see 16 bit samus fight against the mutant scourge.
@neufel i want metroid dlc
Nintendo make this happen!!
@LiberatedAnimal nah, Samus arran baby!
@reali-tglitch baster master got 5 sequels before dying on the Sony Playstation
After that the company likely fell under.
It was developed by Sunsoft
