Can you imagine a first-party psychological horror game on a current-gen Nintendo platform? It would be mind-blowing, and it would help to further diversify the Wii U's library. I sincerely hope they decide to make a sequel and really show us what the system can do graphics-wise.
If they're going to do anything with the IP though, they should start with a relatively low-budget HD remaster of the original game to gauge interest. It was pretty darn ugly, and that's definitely one of those games not everyone wants to have to hunt down and play on a Gamecube.
I had never heard of it before these reports started coming in. Curious, I went to the site and found I really liked it. If it weren't going under I would probably start using it as my main source of gaming news. Sucks.
Maybe Gamesradar will be good too, but if it's cramming together all those other magazines I don't have much hope for it being the same.
I sincerely hope they don't wait until the next system to put out another 3D Mario. NSMBU felt like a placeholder, but then 3D World came out and felt like another placeholder. I want a big, grand Mario adventure a la Sunshine or Galaxy!
I'll bet it's for QoL, as I don't see the next handheld coming that soon. These days it's something of a miracle to still be able to get your consoles in the hands of the consumers, so every time they make a new one they're going to have to start driving that install base all over again. Continuing to support the 3DS for as long as possible is the wisest choice.
Whatever the case, Nintendo doesn't need its next system to have yet another piece of tech attached to it that drives up the price.
It's interesting to claim that this is such a massive success without giving any numbers. VGChartz has this title at 250,000, so I suppose either their estimate is wrong or this company can get by with a very small amount of sales.
I haven't technically gotten my Samus Amiibo as it will probably end up under my tree, but almost every time I look it's available on Amazon at MSRP. So I selected "yes".
I thought the two Gen 1 entries were going to be the only ones I agreed about until you got to Barbaracle. I'd never even seen it before, and it's really awful.
@Kirk Ooh, Nintendo could just occasionally dip into the indie section to showcase a great game, like every week or something! I hope they're following this conversation, this is gold. XD
@Kirk I don't think its necessarily unfair to anyone. The XBLN indie section has a ton of great games, and when you sort by rating you can see the best titles first, then dig deeper if you want to find something else. Some of those indies have sold tons of copies.
Everyone keeps saying how Nintendo needs to stop allowing these kinds of games in the eShop, but that's not true. Microsoft did it best: Just put them all in a separate "indie games" section. That way you know you're going to be wading through some junk when you enter, and the titles won't clog up the rest of the eShop and make it look bad.
Why has Nintendo not done this yet? If they don't soon we're going to have a serious problem.
If anyone had told me of the sales problems and what many refer to as a limited library when I was a kid, I would have been like, "You're full of it."
Then I would have gone and played Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Mario Kart, Diddy Kong Racing, Star Fox, Donkey Kong, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, Smash Bros., Banjo Kazooie, Banjo Kazooie 2 and probably more I'm not remembering, as well as a slew of awesome cross-platform games.
From my perspective that's more awesome games than the Wii U has, definitely more than the Wii had, and maybe even more than the Gamecube had. And it's certainly more games than I've ever even owned on a system, so it's hard to imagine anyone other than non-kids being disappointed with it at the time. Plus I felt like everyone in the world had one; the apparent sales disappointment was news to me many years later.
It's funny how perspective changes things. Now I'M the one who's in the jaded, unsatisfied adult position when it comes to the Wii U. XD
@kereke12 If they're such a joke then please--I absolutely BEG of you--PLEASE leave this site and never come back.
An editor has the right to an opinion piece. If you disagree with it you can say so without calling into question the quality of the entire site and insulting the writer. And if you feel this strongly you can just plain get out of here.
Like, seriously, all you've got to do is navigate away and just never come back to this address again. It's very easy, and both you and we will be better off for it.
@aaronsullivan I also thought their confidence was strange. I would normally just call BS, but the rate at which they put out Smash Bros. has changed my view a bit. So maybe we'll be lucky.
See these words? These words right here in front of me? Yeah, I'm eatin' 'em. If I'd had someone to bet about what Nintendo would show us tonight, I'd be down a whole lot of money.
That seems surprisingly low considering the hype and the quality of the game. Hopefully that's not including backer copies. I pictured this to be a million-seller for sure.
It stinks. They're losing the kids, and they can only hang on to us with the nostalgia for so long. Unless they somehow recapture the younger market it's not a sustainable practice. And those kids aren't changing unless you can get between them and their smartphones, which isn't going to happen any time soon.
I know most people will bite my head off for saying it, but there may come a time that a Pokemon game for smart devices is literally the only way to keep the franchise viable, whether the fans like it or not.
EV's. Discovering them is pretty much what killed the games for me. Sure, they've made them easier to do over the years, but the fact that I can't just pick up a Pokemon and have fun training it traditionally without being a total scrub that has no chance in fighting another person ever defeats the lighthearted nature of Pokemon for me. Now it's a chore. I'm glad most other people seem to be fine with it though.
I remember seeing this all the time on a sizzle reel when I worked at Gamecrazy. Saw it about a million times a day, so it was a little funny when it never even got made.
People who think this is useless must also think the Super Gameboy was useless.
1. Some people like to play their handhelds on their TV rather than hunched over a tiny, dim screen. 2. It's presented in a clarity that we've never had access to before, even if it's not a huge difference. 3 Some people just find this stuff fun. Lighten up, people.
A lot of peoples' purchases hinge on this. This is pretty much unacceptable. Hoping it really is a temporary hiccup based on unexpected demand and that they'll be restocked soon.
Stopped playing for several years, got a taste of Magic and never even considered looking back. Still have a lot of fond memories from middle school though.
I had three holographic Charizards. THREE! Suffice to say I was hot stuff.
With the max discount being 30% off it's doubtful that any of these will be priced lower than their physical counterparts on Amazon during a non-sale period, so unfortunately I won't be getting any of these. The VC titles are a bit of a better deal though, seeing as I'm sure a lot of people don't like getting used GBA carts off ebay. So saving a couple bucks on those might be nice.
Days like this I miss being a kid. I would be absolutely freaking out with excitement right now. I send a jealous shake of the fist paired with a wink to everyone who's going to be spending this entire day just destroying their eyes and hands.
I'm pretty disappointed about Smash Tour. I thought it had a lot of potential to make Smash parties way more interesting. But maybe I'll end up liking it anyway.
For me it feels like a D, so I suppose after sales performance that pushes it down to a solid F in my book. I'm really happy that so many people are enjoying the games on the system, but I'm just not satisfied with my Wii U. I feel like the games just don't live up to Nintendo's standard, and the ones that do are unfortunately for me just not the sort of games I'm interested in. This is basically my Pikmin 3/Netflix machine.
I'm always rooting for the system to turn around, and for Nintendo to announce some games that interest me. I just know that whatever they come out with next, I won't be buying it at launch.
One of these days there will be a Nintendo system I don't buy for a few years into the generation. Then, finally, I'll get in on a Black Friday deal and get some insane prices on the system and a big pile of games. It'll be nice.
I know a lot of people are coming to Nintendo's aid in this regard, but there's nothing that will convince me that three years isn't a preposterous amount of time for this type of project. Even with a significantly smaller team it shouldn't even take as long as the game's initial development time, much less twice as long.
If it came out and actually had a lot of extra content it would be one thing, but I'd bet my bottom dollar we're going to get some polished graphics and some new features--no actual content.
This just went ON and ON during the Direct. It wasn't even that impressive in the first place, either; they tend to treat costume crossovers like they're a huge deal.
I've played Ocarina of Time so much over the years that I didn't have any use for the 3DS version, but this is something that I'm actually interested in. Above everything, I hope this does well enough sales-wise to communicate to Nintendo that we still want unique, emotional, atmospheric games.
I've got an "I'll believe it when I see it" attitude when it comes to publishers claiming that they're going to have a lot of games within a given period of time (Nintendo ESPECIALLY), but I must say that at least they're giving us details of their new plan and reasons why this might actually be somewhat true.
They've always been famously low on manpower though, so I'm not quite sure how they're going to juggle this many smaller titles as well as working on the big ones. Hopefully it's like he says and they're just getting a lot of outside help.
Simply by having this be the first real Direct since June, Nintendo has passively built hype and expectations for it. So realistically, that means get ready to be disappointed, right?
But hey, I'm still excited though. That's the life of a Nintendo junky...

I'm slightly bothered by the syllables not fitting with the original song. But I like it anyway.
Breaking my own rule horrifically: "9 hours, persons and doors!"
