They've yet to provide any reason why I should play this instead of the original. It's just the same thing again with muddier visuals and big eggs. And is the story seriously just a carbon copy? I know the story's not incredibly important, but you could at least put literally any thought into it at all.
@IceClimbers Most current teenagers weren't even alive when that commercial came out. They don't have nostalgia for old commercials, and I don't think they can tell the difference between a throwback and something that's just "kiddy".
With basically every recent game Nintendo's been going with this whole thing of mixing the game with the real world, and I think it looks really terrible. I understand that Nintendo games are largely aimed at kids, but commercials this cheesy are going to turn away a lot of older kids that might have been interested. It was stupid, and I'm very different now, but when I was a teenager I would have been embarrassed to buy a game with ads like these.
Man, the 64DD... I remember seeing screens in my Tips and Tricks magazine of Super Mario 64 but with Luigi next to him, and being so anxious for the thing to come out. Good thing it didn't though. Creating a weird upgrade to a current system that takes new media seems like a pretty stupid idea when you can just make a new system.
@sinalefa I hear you! I've been wanting to download some puzzles, but my DS has a hard time connecting to my router without me changing a ton of security settings. I need to take it somewhere and see if I can connect and get some puzzles before the servers are shut down.
@TruenoGT Adding the extra dimension makes it so much more interesting! Like, I don't even see the point in playing the 2D ones, they just seem inferior to me.
Started in November? So we'll see the game in about...2018?
Seriously though, the fact that he mentioned those series makes me think the new game isn't related to any of them. And while I would love to see another Metroid, the mystery is exciting.
I wonder if the Wii U's digital figures will go down once the Deluxe Digital Promotion ends this year. I know that I usually only buy games digitally if I can get them a lot cheaper than retail, and without the promotion it's going to be less significant. Pretty much just eShop card sales and Club Nintendo will be making the difference.
@NodesforNoids Man, Tearaway is pretty much the only game that makes me wish I had a Vita. It looks so awesome! I feel like Sony is kind of pushing Nintendo out of the game when it comes to genuinely new and delightful concepts, and that makes me pretty sad.
I feel really bad for Vita owners. Almost everything they get is already a multiplat, released with cross play with PS3, or eventually gets an HD re-release on the home consoles. And Sony wonders why nobody's buying the system...
I think it will do a little better in the west, but not by much. People have been referring to this game like it was actually a system seller since its announcement and I've never understood it. It's a 2D platformer, much like the one we've already played. It's going to be fun, but it's not going to move systems. Nintendo needs something new and unique to do that. (Or at least more exciting than a 2D platformer.)
@unrandomsam It's possible, but I still doubt it. Yoshi and Wario aren't in every Mario game, so it would be harder to give them as much exposure. Plus I don't think Yarn Yoshi will be released this year. But that's just my guess.
I don't think we'll get a year for anyone else. The only reason this one worked was because Luigi is a Mario character, and Mario gets about a thousand games a year. They can't possibly develop enough games to make another character work the same way.
No silver lining for this guy. If I don't decide to buy Smash (I'm still on the fence) then there ain't one single retail game I'll be buying this year. And in my opinion, a multiplat indie game on the eShop is nice, but literally does nothing to argue the Wii U experience. Unless it's exclusively on the platform, I'm going to get it on PC for a lot cheaper, and no one is going to buy a Wii U for it. They can bring in a bit of revenue, but you just can't list them as reasons why the Wii U is great.
@Nintenjoe64 The great thing about it is that since the Gamecube didn't have a big install base there were a lot of really great games that went under the radar. The Wii U has a similar problem, but has the benefit of having a whole new generation of gamers that are more open to anything and are also starving for games. And if the Wii U takes off eventually then these games can get great second chances.
@Zach It's really sad when our "dreams" are what we expected from Nintendo at launch well over a year ago now. Nintendo really needs to get their act together. :/
@Peach64 I hope they start bringing out the HD versions of Gamecube games, though I'll bet the quickest they release them is once a year, if that. They've got to act like they put enough work into them so they can charge near-full price, don't they? ;D
Seriously though, my guess is that Super Mario Sunshine is next. The trigger problem is a bit of a big one (why digital triggers, Nintendo, WHY???) but I think they can work around it somehow.
I really liked the stuff I saw on Microsoft's Illumiroom, so this is right up my alley. Some might find it gimmicky, but I'm all about immersion and atmosphere, so I think it would be really awesome. It's almost like extending the edges of your TV to the edges of your vision.
If I ever get this, it's good to hear that the 3DS version is good. With retro visuals I always prefer the handheld experience. (Which of course makes me mad that I've got all these great SNES games on my Wii U.)
Anyone who talks bad about these guys doesn't know anything about them and is just butthurt that they "ditched" Nintendo. It was a business decision, people. Nintendo is doing better now, but they didn't have an easy platform for indie games last generation. These guys are small developers reacting to what's in front of them; they're not spiteful, money-grubbing Nintendo haters. It costs money to port a game to a system, and several times more to develop for it. If you can look at the install base and know that you probably won't sell enough units to make your money back, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO IT, especially when you're paying literally every cost out of your own pocket. (That's what INDIE DEV means! Go figure!)
While I don't believe they'll cut the price this year, remember that they said the exact same thing before cutting it last time. You really can't trust these kinds of statements.
This is one reason I love Nintendo Life. Many sites don't want to be totally honest when their first impressions of a game are bad. It's like they feel they should wait for the official review to tear the game apart or something. But this is honest and to the point.
Holy cow, what a sale! Nintendo's going on the offensive after that terrible briefing, and that's a very very good thing. I'll just HAVE to pick up Spin the Bottle at that price! Maybe a few others, too...
Fantastic! I always regretted not getting a 3DS in time for it the first time around! (Though I really don't know why they haven't just put it in the darn eShop...)
I miss when Nintendo used to just make cool games that were fun to play. When they worked on making games, rather than coming up with new technology and adapting the games to it. Unfortunately though, making good games isn't enough, as proven by the Gamecube...
@Shadowflash I agree that it's a large undertaking to write a book. But a higher price does not equal a greater profit. A cheaper book sells more copies, potentially making more profit than a more expensive book, especially when you factor in the fact that more copies means more word of mouth, which leads to even more copies.
One of the biggest mistakes a writer can make is pricing their book at what they THINK it's value is, not realizing that a book is only worth as much as people are willing to pay for it. Even if you pour your entire life into a book, spend thousands of hours on it, make it the best thing in the world, it's not worth any amount if people don't buy it. You've got to factor in the size of your audience and their spending habits.
But don't mind me, I could go on and on about the ebook market. It's a subject of particular interest for me, so I'm likely to ramble, haha.
@KeithTheGeek Nintendo has just stopped some pretty regular stuff for dumb reasons before. Just surprising that they didn't do it this time.
I really don't see how that's a good price. I can buy a regular book by a real author for that price, or an MP3 album, or a game. It just seems like a lot for something that's normally offered online for free. It's a lot more substantial than usual, sure, but not by THAT much.
But I guess the real gauge of whether the price is good will be how many people actually buy it. If a lot of people do, then more power to the guy. Maybe most people won't agree with me.
@Shadowflash Yes. When you're writing for an extremely small audience, you can't expect to shift a lot of copies at a high price; pricing low expands that audience. The ebook market is all about volume and competitive pricing.
Still way too much money for something that's really just mildly amusing. If he wants to make any real money he should write a lot of them and make them a buck or two each.
I'm pretty surprised Nintendo hasn't come in and stopped this, by the way.
Oh my gosh, Nintendo, KEEP BUYING. I suspect that a lot of decisions over the past several years have been made in haste to make shareholders happy. Short-term, really dumb stuff to appease a room full of old farts who don't actually know anything about games. And that system is completely dumb.
Maybe breaking free of that is what Nintendo needs. Maybe they'll be able to be creative again, rather than depending on the past.
It would be a short term solution. Removing the only thing that separates the system from the other gen 7 systems to save a little money right now is a terrible idea. Down the line when the Wii U is cheaper to manufacture and the price isn't a problem anymore, we're going to be lucky they kept it.
Let's just hope they all actually come out this year. I wouldn't call X or Smash Bros. sure bets, and there's that rumor that Watchdogs might get cancelled.
People who refuse to back Kickstarters or think the whole thing is a scam are paranoid and misinformed. Basically what you're saying is, "I don't trust anybody ever, and I refuse to abandon the old model of publishers controlling every aspect of every game and hoarding all the money." This is a golden opportunity for a dev to make the game THEY want, but no, it's all just a scam, I'll just buy it AFTER it comes out! (Which it won't if you don't do your part to support it, though you fail to grasp that concept.)
These stats aren't damaging at all. They mean nothing. Games take a lot of time to make, and often the delays are because the projects raised a lot more than they expected, so they want to take the extra time to use the money to its fullest. Double Fine Adventure is a perfect example of this. It's taking way longer than they originally said, and we only just got part one of Broken Age, but it looks about ten times cooler than what it was going to be like originally.
