Re: Yoshi Invades the Real World in the Latest New Island Trailer

DerpSandwich

With basically every recent game Nintendo's been going with this whole thing of mixing the game with the real world, and I think it looks really terrible. I understand that Nintendo games are largely aimed at kids, but commercials this cheesy are going to turn away a lot of older kids that might have been interested. It was stupid, and I'm very different now, but when I was a teenager I would have been embarrassed to buy a game with ads like these.

Re: Weirdness: 10th March is Mario Day, Apparently

DerpSandwich

"We won't be party poopers and directly point out the incorrect naming and past gen references it's dropping..."

In all seriousness, this says a lot about the public's image of Mario right now. The newer stuff mights as well not even exist to most people.

Re: Feature: Games That Almost Were - A Look At Cancelled N64 Titles

DerpSandwich

Man, the 64DD... I remember seeing screens in my Tips and Tricks magazine of Super Mario 64 but with Luigi next to him, and being so anxious for the thing to come out. Good thing it didn't though. Creating a weird upgrade to a current system that takes new media seems like a pretty stupid idea when you can just make a new system.

Re: Picross e4 Is Coming To Western 3DS eShops This April

DerpSandwich

@sinalefa I hear you! I've been wanting to download some puzzles, but my DS has a hard time connecting to my router without me changing a ton of security settings. I need to take it somewhere and see if I can connect and get some puzzles before the servers are shut down.

Re: NPD Data Shows More U.S. Gamers Switching to Downloads

DerpSandwich

I wonder if the Wii U's digital figures will go down once the Deluxe Digital Promotion ends this year. I know that I usually only buy games digitally if I can get them a lot cheaper than retail, and without the promotion it's going to be less significant. Pretty much just eShop card sales and Club Nintendo will be making the difference.

Re: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Only Sells Just Over 35,000 Units in Japanese Launch

DerpSandwich

I think it will do a little better in the west, but not by much. People have been referring to this game like it was actually a system seller since its announcement and I've never understood it. It's a 2D platformer, much like the one we've already played. It's going to be fun, but it's not going to move systems. Nintendo needs something new and unique to do that. (Or at least more exciting than a 2D platformer.)

Re: The Year of Luigi Officially Ends on 18th March

DerpSandwich

I don't think we'll get a year for anyone else. The only reason this one worked was because Luigi is a Mario character, and Mario gets about a thousand games a year. They can't possibly develop enough games to make another character work the same way.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Direct Pointed to Another Wii U Retail Drought

DerpSandwich

No silver lining for this guy. If I don't decide to buy Smash (I'm still on the fence) then there ain't one single retail game I'll be buying this year. And in my opinion, a multiplat indie game on the eShop is nice, but literally does nothing to argue the Wii U experience. Unless it's exclusively on the platform, I'm going to get it on PC for a lot cheaper, and no one is going to buy a Wii U for it. They can bring in a bit of revenue, but you just can't list them as reasons why the Wii U is great.

Re: Talking Point: What We Expect In Nintendo Direct - 13th February

DerpSandwich

@Nintenjoe64 The great thing about it is that since the Gamecube didn't have a big install base there were a lot of really great games that went under the radar. The Wii U has a similar problem, but has the benefit of having a whole new generation of gamers that are more open to anything and are also starving for games. And if the Wii U takes off eventually then these games can get great second chances.

Re: Talking Point: What We Expect In Nintendo Direct - 13th February

DerpSandwich

@Peach64 I hope they start bringing out the HD versions of Gamecube games, though I'll bet the quickest they release them is once a year, if that. They've got to act like they put enough work into them so they can charge near-full price, don't they? ;D

Seriously though, my guess is that Super Mario Sunshine is next. The trigger problem is a bit of a big one (why digital triggers, Nintendo, WHY???) but I think they can work around it somehow.

Re: Team Meat's Name Originated From a "Random" Nintendo Press Release

DerpSandwich

Anyone who talks bad about these guys doesn't know anything about them and is just butthurt that they "ditched" Nintendo. It was a business decision, people. Nintendo is doing better now, but they didn't have an easy platform for indie games last generation. These guys are small developers reacting to what's in front of them; they're not spiteful, money-grubbing Nintendo haters. It costs money to port a game to a system, and several times more to develop for it. If you can look at the install base and know that you probably won't sell enough units to make your money back, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO DO IT, especially when you're paying literally every cost out of your own pocket. (That's what INDIE DEV means! Go figure!)

Sheesh.

Re: Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4 Now Available on Kindle, Discount Price Extended

DerpSandwich

@Shadowflash I agree that it's a large undertaking to write a book. But a higher price does not equal a greater profit. A cheaper book sells more copies, potentially making more profit than a more expensive book, especially when you factor in the fact that more copies means more word of mouth, which leads to even more copies.

One of the biggest mistakes a writer can make is pricing their book at what they THINK it's value is, not realizing that a book is only worth as much as people are willing to pay for it. Even if you pour your entire life into a book, spend thousands of hours on it, make it the best thing in the world, it's not worth any amount if people don't buy it. You've got to factor in the size of your audience and their spending habits.

But don't mind me, I could go on and on about the ebook market. It's a subject of particular interest for me, so I'm likely to ramble, haha.

Re: Critical Analysis of Wario Land 4 Now Available on Kindle, Discount Price Extended

DerpSandwich

@KeithTheGeek Nintendo has just stopped some pretty regular stuff for dumb reasons before. Just surprising that they didn't do it this time.

I really don't see how that's a good price. I can buy a regular book by a real author for that price, or an MP3 album, or a game. It just seems like a lot for something that's normally offered online for free. It's a lot more substantial than usual, sure, but not by THAT much.

But I guess the real gauge of whether the price is good will be how many people actually buy it. If a lot of people do, then more power to the guy. Maybe most people won't agree with me.

Re: Nintendo Confirms Plans To Acquire Up To Ten Million Of Its Own Shares

DerpSandwich

Oh my gosh, Nintendo, KEEP BUYING. I suspect that a lot of decisions over the past several years have been made in haste to make shareholders happy. Short-term, really dumb stuff to appease a room full of old farts who don't actually know anything about games. And that system is completely dumb.

Maybe breaking free of that is what Nintendo needs. Maybe they'll be able to be creative again, rather than depending on the past.

Re: Kickstarter Research Highlights Low Delivery Rates of Game Projects

DerpSandwich

People who refuse to back Kickstarters or think the whole thing is a scam are paranoid and misinformed. Basically what you're saying is, "I don't trust anybody ever, and I refuse to abandon the old model of publishers controlling every aspect of every game and hoarding all the money." This is a golden opportunity for a dev to make the game THEY want, but no, it's all just a scam, I'll just buy it AFTER it comes out! (Which it won't if you don't do your part to support it, though you fail to grasp that concept.)

These stats aren't damaging at all. They mean nothing. Games take a lot of time to make, and often the delays are because the projects raised a lot more than they expected, so they want to take the extra time to use the money to its fullest. Double Fine Adventure is a perfect example of this. It's taking way longer than they originally said, and we only just got part one of Broken Age, but it looks about ten times cooler than what it was going to be like originally.
