In case you haven't seen it yet, Egoraptor made a great video about this game versus its predecessor. (There's a lot of swearing, in case that bothers you.)
There are SO SO MANY things the app could do better. Simple things that every user could point out to you. Features that are present on every other device out there. Options that you would think were common sense additions. Yet this adds none of them. Great. Thanks, Netflix.
Nintendo's really good at using a certain technology and making games that use it, but it's not quite good enough yet to work properly or otherwise it's too inconvenient to use. Then later when they've made that tech better, they'll abandon the idea and stop making games that use it. We get all these sub-par VR games now, but I bet you anything when the next handheld comes out and it's got a way better camera and processor, they'll stop coming.
Subspace Emissary was my favorite part of that game, but I won't be so mad as long as there's a beefy single player campaign. If it's just another ten-minute-long Adventure Mode like in Melee, I'm not buying it.
@ricklongo While you've got a point about Star Fox and F-Zero (though I think they could sell well with the right treatment; Star Fox in particular doesn't sell well, but only because Nintendo keeps trying to change the formula), but the Metroid Prime games sold pretty well. It's also about having compelling and mature games on your system. Stomping goombas and penguins is fun, but even as a Nintendo gamer I still want something deeper sometimes.
You're totally right about everything though. The VC in particular confuses me. The fact that they didn't have the entire Wii VC catalog at launch and start releasing Gamecube games from there is baffling. Nintendo has the potential to dominate, but they just can't get themselves to make the right decisions to do so. It's harsh, but I think the management is just really inept.
"I'm sorry everyone. The Wii U isn't doing so well. As a change in strategy, we're going to make a lot of games to put on the system. We'll start developing them now, so judging by our usual development times they should be ready in about 2018. Hey, how could we have known that we needed games on our system and not just Wii Fit and Mario? No one could have known that." --Iwata
It's extremely frustrating when Nintendo consistently ignores common sense, and when they struggle they say they need a "new strategy". No, you just need to start being smart. It's equally frustrating when other companies insist that they need to abandon their model altogether. But Nintendo didn't get in this mess because Mario isn't on smartphones. They got in it because they barely have any games, they're not using the gamepad they paid so dearly to manufacture, their next-gen machine lacks most features present in consoles we've had for nearly a decade now, they're doing some ridiculously confusing things with the VC, and they won't give us games from the IP's we're all screaming for. Yet they want to think of a new strategy! Humbug.
I think the list is really great except for Star Fox and Paper Mario. With so many disappointing releases for these IP's over the years, I think we need grand new experiences for each rather than eShop titles. Star Fox needs to be a graphically awesome action-packed shooter with incredible set pieces, and Paper Mario needs to be a content-rich RPG adventure like it used to be.
What a bummer. You buy a game that you might not have bought otherwise because you really want to support the dev, and it doesn't even matter. It's a tough industry!
Hopefully I'll forever remember that E3 as the biggest disappointment ever, because it would mean they turned around. Though I've said that a couple times in a row now, and Nintendo continues to top themselves in this regard. At least my expectations can't really get lower for this year, so I guess I can't be disappointed, really...
The sad thing is that even knowing they ruined the entire contest won't make the cheaters feel bad. If they're crappy enough to cheat in a contest just to make themselves feel good, they're too crappy to care about ruining things for others in the first place. They'll just cheap on the next one too.
@CharlieLoneWolf Like I said, I'm unfortunately not too interested in much else. Lots of games that look sort of fun, but not fun enough to spend $50 or $60 on. Donkey Kong is probably the closest thing to a game I want, but I'd rather wait for the price to go down.
It's probably a good thing though. My backlog is staggering. Still so many 3DS games to buy, and even more that I've already bought and neglected to play! 2013 was a preposterously awesome year for the handheld.
@CharlieLoneWolf I'm not usually good enough to play anything online. I'm a pretty casual gamer, haha. If I compete I want it to be with people in the room, but that's about it.
Nah, too many coins. I'd rather have a bunch of free games. I would love it if they'd offer something like this to Platinum members though; I only have room for so many posters on my walls. Maybe someday we'll get something like that sweet Mario statue from a few years back (which I sadly missed out on).
I really hope they hit us with some more big announcements soon. Not too much that interests me so far this year. (Smash Bros. would have been highly-anticipated, but the removal of any sort of story mode means I'm better off just playing it at a friend's house. Playing against endless bots grows old for me.)
As much as I want it to come to Wii U, I probably wouldn't end up buying it, as it would have a limited map like on 360. If I'm going to play, I want a limitless world to play in.
@DarkwingLz Consider that you can buy a similar battery third-party for about $20. Then consider that that third-party company paid to manufacture the battery in relatively low numbers, then sold it to the retailer at a low enough price that the retailer could then re-sell it for a profit of their own. Then think about Nintendo, who can manufacture them by the millions and doesn't have to worry about selling them to a retailer for a profit, followed by another profit--just purely for utility. Lastly think about how they were already paying for batteries; these batteries are just better, so it would just be an upgrade.
Considering all that, I don't think it seems so unreasonable to imagine the difference being mere dollars. My guess was that they just skimped on the battery to make the Gamepad as light as possible.
Mer. Less willing to get it when they should have just put a better battery in it in the first place. You're mass-producing these systems by the millions; you're telling me you couldn't have spent an extra buck or two to drastically increase our ability to play comfortably?
Looks like one you've got to try for yourself to judge. IGN gave it a bit of a higher score. Seems like a perfect game for a kid to get into the genre.
I'll probably get the second one for my wife if they release that too. I'm generally a more experienced and skilled gamer than her, but I've seen her playing through that game, and I've got to give her mad props for it. I can barely wrap my head around these games.
I hate how so many games are so cheap on PC. It means that I end up owning them all for nothing, so I can't justify re-buying them on other platforms despite the fact that I'd rather play them on those platforms. Cave Story on my 3DS would be so cool, but I've already got it.
I'm not an old school gamer, and that price is completely absurd, but I'm happy for the people that will enjoy this. It's the sort of creativity Nintendo needs more of right now.
I'm still not sold on the visuals. I think I need to see them in action to make a decision.
I need more footage, too. I thought the second showing of a game was supposed to really blow the whole thing open and get us excited, but that was just like the footage we saw before. I need to see creativity and exciting gameplay before I get excited--not just Yoshi hopping around like he's in a game for babies.
I was a lot more excited when I thought Kirby would be in Marko Kart. I'm actually still confused as to why the video went the way it did.
I mean come on, why is it Mario Kart and not Nintendo Kart or Super Kart Bros. or something? Think of all the crazy items and courses they could introduce!
@LordGeovanni Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I'll probably have to pass, even with the hard mode. I really can't see why they couldn't include more. It's like the simplest game in the world. Oh well!
Nintendo. Releasing a sequel to one of the most beloved games of all time, and NOT releasing the original beforehand on Wii U, despite it already being available on the Wii eShop. Even the absolute simplest, most obvious marketing techniques elude them.
I just hope we get another one this generation. And if we do, I hope it has the same relationship with 3 as 2 did with 1: stuffed with several times more content and filled with insane, more "arcadey" and chaotic enemies and hazards.
@CountWavula I would have liked Skyward Sword's visuals more if the "paint" style was used more in the game. Instead it just felt like anything far away looked like a painting (if just to mask the bad draw distance) and everything else had no soul to it. If stuff looked like paintings up close as well I would have thought it was awesome, but the way it is it just turned out boring to me. I'm glad a lot of other people enjoyed it though.
@Deadstanley I remember I had a huge box of Nintendo Power magazines for years after I stopped collecting them. Eventually I just had to toss them though. Good times with them, it was always a good day when I'd come home from school and find a new issue sitting on my pillow. I kind of wish I'd tried to find someone who wanted them, but I really didn't want to go through all that.
@CountWavula Yeah, Epic Yarn was a great example of doing something different, but then they went and gimped the game by making it too easy so kids could play it! It's like they lost the ability to give us the whole package anymore. Skyward Sword disappointed me in that way too. Twilight Princess was atmospheric and interesting, Wind Waker was stylish and colorful, but SS was just kind of bland and plasticy, like the worst of both worlds.
When Brawl came out, remember how awesome Mario looked in his awesomely textured overalls? Now Mario is just made of plastic, like you said, even though he's made the move to HD. It's like, come on, Nintendo. We want to see some cool stuff. Not just shiny stuff.
@CountWavula Yeah, I definitely had a lot of warm tinglies with the Wii. Booting up Twilight Princess for the first time was the last time I've felt like a kid on Christmas morning. I think one of Nintendo's problems is that they're actually REMOVING some of the magic in order to make their games more accessible and streamlined. They used to just make games however they wanted, but now everything's got to be polished and clean and plain looking, and there really can't be any story or anything particularly unique or risky. Just some solid gameplay concepts and nothing more. Just look at something like Donkey Kong Country. The old ones had a very unique aesthetic that was a little grittier and could be a bit more ambient and atmospheric. Donkey Kong Country Returns is fantastic, and oozing with charm, but that whole "feel" of the old games is gone. Now it's just smooth, cartoony, silly fun. But that's just one example.
@CountWavula Tell me about it, Nintendo's the only company that still has some magic left, and even that's fading. Well, indie devs are really what's revitalizing the industry. Unbridled creativity is bringing the magic back.
@tigermask It's funny, I don't even remember how I knew about the Genesis or any games at all for that matter. I don't remember commercials. Maybe I saw something in the store... But for the most part I only remember wanting it and getting it. Weird.
I still remember tearing open my Sega Genesis with Sonic 2 and Sonic and Knuckles. There's certainly a magic that has largely left the game industry. Heck, just the fact that I'm referring to it as an industry says something about it, doesn't it?
It was nice to see an increase in Wii U sales, but then a lot less nice to see that it was still selling significantly less than PS3 and 360. Nintendo is in a really big heap of trouble right now.
The videos work for me. It certainly looks a lot more interesting than the first trailer, but I'm still afraid that Nintendo is continuing down the "Kirby is like Mario for little kids" route. So far this looks stupidly easy.
