It's that time again, North America, for a whole load of download goodies to arrive on Wii U and 3DS. This week brings a high profile Capcom arrival and some promising options on the 3DS, while free-to-play appears (sort of) on the Wii U; both Virtual Console platforms get a game, too, while Activision is partying like it's 2011 with some of its retail eShop releases. Let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update this week? Don't panic! The details are right here.
Wii U eShop
Lucadian Chronicles — (Dark Roast Entertainment, free or $7.99 unlock) — This is a virtual card game which also promises online play, so it could certainly fill a gap on the eShop. It'll be available as a free download (with limits to how much can be played and how often) or fully unlocked for a one-off fee of $7.99 — we'll put our game face on and bring you a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Crash 'n the Boys: Street Challenge (Aksys Games, $4.99) — A spin-off from the River City Ransom world, this twists established sports into quirky and violent street events. While it can be fun playing this with others, its shortcomings meant it picked up 5/10 in our review.
Wii U Retail Downloads
Angry Birds Star Wars (Activision, $49.99)
Angry Birds Trilogy (Activision, $49.99)
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition (Digital Lounge, more than 50% off from 12th December until 24th December, normally $7.99)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Little Orbit, discounted from 16th December until 14th January)
Disney Planes: Fire and Rescue (Little Orbit, discounted from 16th December until 14th January)
BLOK DROP U (RCMADIAX, $0.99 until 7th January, normally $1.99)
POKER DICE SOLITAIRE FUTURE (RCMADIAX, $0.69 until 7th January, normally $0.99)
SHUT THE BOX (RCMADIAX, $0.69 until 7th January, normally $0.99)
SPIKEY WALLS (RCMADIAX, $0.69 until 7th January, normally $0.99)
3DS eShop
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy (Capcom, $29.99) — In a year of high-quality remakes and remasters, Capcom is now weighing in with this original trilogy of Ace Attorney games, which is download-only in the West following a retail release in Japan. The Game Boy Advance / DS entries have had their visuals remastered, which should help with investigation scenes and add some extra intensity to court proceedings. We certainly enjoyed these games when first released, and will see whether this remastered download release is innocent or guilty in our review.
Xeodrifter (Renegade Kid, $9.99) — The latest pixel-based title from Renegade Kid on 3DS, this is an exploration adventure title in which you explore four different planets in a bid to grab resources that'll repair your ship's warp core. There's a clear Metroidvania inspiration and some varied gameplay that promises much; we'll let you know what we think in a review.
Hazumi (Gamelion, $3.99) — A colourful puzzle action game, of sorts, you manoeuvre a ball to take out blocks, activate switches and move into portals. It looks rather fun and includes a level editor, but we'll put it to the test in a review.
My First Songs 2 (Ringzero Games, $4.99) — The series of nursery rhymes accompanied by cute visuals continues, with this likely to follow its predecessor in providing a rhythm-based experience as opposed to the karaoke found on Wii U. It includes 14 songs, and we'll bring you a review on its merits.
Talking Phrasebook - 7 Languages (Sanuk Games, $4.99) — This is an offline resource for learning important phrases in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. As a travelling tool this is rather accomplished, and we awarded it 8/10 in our review.
3DS Virtual Console
Harvest Moon 3 (Natsume, $4.99) — The third entry in the farm-sim series has now arrived, as you move on from your grandfather's farm to take up a friend's invitation to boost their fortunes on a remote island. We expect a slightly evolved but largely similar experience to its predecessors, but we'll dig in for a review.

I'm starting to think I'll never see Donkey Kong Country.
ill be getting the phrasebook
I can't believe I'm saying this...I'm disappointed with this week.
Edit: Oh wait, I see Xeodrifter.
Looks like we are back to garbage VC after one week of decency.
SpaceCoyote: NOA will go through every release but DKC first. It's their modus operandi.
I said it once before and I'll say it again "Wake me up when NoA decides to actually bring the DKC series and Metroid Zero Mission to the eShop".
Not disappointed at all! Four things this week are getting downloaded. Whoa Dave and Steel Empire while on sale, Xeodrifter and Phoenix Wright whenever I clear out the backlog a little.
Seems like a pretty good week to me!
Good week! will get Woah Dave now, maybe another world, and XeoDrifter if it's a game that takes a while to a long time to beat.
Nothing but a fire sale this week for me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYLGQAE9P4o
Harvest Moon 3 is sooo not more of the same. First handheld one with marriage, for one thing. Massive gameplay differences between genders. Only one of the games to feature a real roommate system, as far as I know. BE TWELVE OCLOCK FASTER
Also, it has a world map, a falcon, you can buy a boat, aaaaaaaaaaand overall the best inventory out of the series. Comparing it to the other games is a bit like comparing Mario Galaxy to Super Mario Bros.
If Another World gets the reduction in Europe too, I'll get it.
Did we not get the new Zen Pinball tables? Or is this just another case of the report not mentioning it?
I know there have been weeks when Europe had Zen Pinball table discounts, and it wasn't mentioned in the NA report, but they were still available in the NA eShop.
Just another doggieoopsiepoopie week from NOA.
No Donkey Kong Country
No Donkey Kong Land
No Metroid Zero Mission
No Super Mario RPG
@Pahvi Those Angry Bird prices are a bargain, I'm gutted we don't have the opportunity to have such bargains in EU
Pretty excited for Xeodrifter. Will also take Whoa, Dave! at that price.
Those Angry Bird prices are outrageous. Hahaha
Nothing good once again. NOA sucks donkey.
Couldn't we just play Angry birds on our phone for free?
@ericwithcheese2 Makes me want to catapult myself into a wall, or better yet, those prices!
Any word on the south park tables for Zen pinnball 2
A mobile game for $49.99? Ha!
I'm pretty excited about Ace Attorney Trilogy, since each game alone previously costed around at least half the price of the eshop release. It will probably still be a little bit of a wait, but DKC/ DKL series will be on the eshop...just a year or so after Europe and a lot of the world gets it.
I'm tempted to get Another world while it on sale
♥I Love My Little Girl!♥ ♥I Love My Little Boy!♥ ♥I Love My Horse!♥ ♥♥LLLOOOOVVVVVVVVE!♥ ♥
Wait gamestop sells both Angry Birds for less then 10 bucks used and umder twenty new. Why would one pay 50 to download. Also the original retail price for each was 29.99 dollars. Or does AB Stars Wars now contain the second game. Also where is Lufia the gbc game?
@DoomTurtle They're not in the PR, no
@Captain_Toad Thanks, I love myself as well!
finally a good week. i havent downloaded anything in months. i'm getting steel empire(finally!), whoa dave at that price for sure. and xeodrifter probably.
oh yea, and angry birds if i feel like flushing $50 down the toilet. just kidding. anybody who pays $50 for a 99cent game thats not even worth playing for free has brain damage.
Lucadian Chronicles and STEEL EMPIRE!
xeodrifter looks like a mutant mutts clone.....and ive been there done that.Il just save my money and go back to ToadTT...its awesome.Hope you guys look into it.Its a heck of a value, with a surprising amount of content
Angry birds for $50 is still lol forever.
Just Phoenix Wight for me this week. Wonder how many FBI watchlists you'll end up on if you download "I Love My Little Boy/Girl."
@KillerIsDead
NOA hardly made any of these... In fact, I don't think there's a single game up here made by Nintendo. You should probably target that chipper, open-minded attitude at yourself.
I voted nothing, until I read the comments where @TruenoGT brought to my attention that Whoa Discount! on Whoa Dave!
Anyone who would pay $50 for Angry Birds has more money than they have sense.
There's a lot of stuff up there, but it seems really weak for 2 weeks before Christmas. I don't see a single Ntinedo IP.
Oh well, maybe Nintedo is waiting for more people to unwrap their Wii U on Christmas before giving us deals on good games people want. Or they are just waiting for the DDP program to end so they don't have to pay out the 10% credit @sinalefa
Obligatory STAY AWAY FROM HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2, either Angry Birds at $50 would be money better spent.
$50 for an Angry Birds game… on 3DS‽
Meh. I bought an eShop card because I thought the DKC and DKL trilogies were going to hit Virtual Console before year's end. How silly of me to think that...
Ucky. I bought up shop eshop cards to take advantage of the expiring DDP, and we get these games?
$50 for Angry Birds? What a deal!!
Still no Breath of Fire on Wii U in US despite availability in EU weeks ago?
@dragontelex
don't worry, Donkey Kong country 1,2,and 3 and Golden Sun 2 are the same.
Wait, aren't Angry Birds games...free on Smartphones?
$50 Angry Birds is crazy. Should move the decimal two spots to the left.
$50 FOR Angry Birds is worse than a football in the groin!
@rjejr
I just checked and we only have two Thursdays left, on the 18th and 25th. So unless they throw them to us on Christmas Day, they are doing that just to spite me
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy just to support that franchise and Woah Dave.. woah, 0.99$?? I gotta get it now.
Looks like Spikey Walls has been discounted down 30¢, in case you were a little tight on money
Wow, that's a bad week. Good thing I picked up the Evil Within on Steam a few weeks ago. I've been in need of horror games on my Wii U and had to temporarily migrate away. I hope they work out something with Capcom for Resident Evil. Ah well.
Apparently having Activision publish the game increases the price from $.99 (or $2.97 for the triology) to $49.99. That is some serious markup. Anyways, i will stick with the tablet version on Android that was free. The concept started to jump the shark anyways with special abilities and 3 star goals that are borderline impossible without them.
Phoenix Wright for me. I've been looking forward to this release for quite some time.
I've been wanting Activision to put Angry Birds on the eShop but, I will never pay $50 for an Angry Birds game lol. When its $10 we'll see. Activision hates Nintendo it seems. XeoDrifter and Steel Empire for me!
@Nicolai
If you have to discount a 99 cents game then it seems it does not sell. Glad to hear his cynical ploy did not work then.
I would try Phoenix Wright, but I have the first one on DS and haven't played it much, so when I beat it and if I like it maybe I'll get this to play the others. $50 for angry birds?! are they out of their minds? I might get Xeodrifter, I'll wait for reviews
Nothing for me, but only because I'm getting A Link Between Worlds for my girlfriend and, hopefully, Kirby: Triple Deluxe for my best friend.
Getting that free game.
Rovio, if you're really shirked for money, at least give us quality games. $50 is too much for a mobile phone game you can pay for next to nothing for on the original platform. And Nintendo of America, how dare you even allow this to even happen. You know Angry Birds. You do realize it's not worth that price, yes? Reggie needs to kick out the people in charge of eShop management.
@sinalefa - Do you think they will update on Christmas? I know they updated on Thanksgiving, but thousands (10's of thousands maybe) of kids weren't opening new Wii U and trying to download the update patches all at the same time Thanksgiving morning. Christmas Eve and NY Eve would work better. One last buying bonanza New Years Eve for you. Maybe Shantae, and I'm still waiting for Sword & Soldiers 2.
Though I still think they extend it and open it to everybody. Though it would be nice of them to extend it to everybody before Christmas day.
You think we'll get another Nintendo Direct in Dec? Maybe they can tell us about new amiibo next year that we'll have to buy on eBay?
Dang!! I bought Whoa Dave last week!! And I even said I was going to wait for a sale... Oh well, it's still fun.
Lucadian Chronicles and Xeodrifter seem nice enough that I'll get them both.
And yes, no Donkey Kong Country. Why am I not surprised?
@rjejr
I am going from them updating on Thanksgiving to base that they will, but of course I am not sure. Keep in mind that kids will be updating their consoles in Xmas morning and the eShop is updated around noon. I have heard of cautious parents who update the system before Xmas to have it ready for their kids. If Nintendo updates on Wednesday instead I won't complain.
About the Direct, I would say yes. I think last year they wished us Merry Xmas and Happy New Year (with HW) and they haven't done that this year.
I understand the disappointment that a lot of people seem to be voicing... They just got the ball rolling on Wii U eShop last year, and now that there are only two weeks left for promotionals, the pickings seem slim (seeing as that Novembers CN offers were rehashes of Wii offerings from less than a year earlier)... I hope @Sinalefa is right about them updating on Xmas that would be a nice gift on Xmas morning.
@rjejr @sinalefa I got a feeling that our big holiday Direct will come in January this time around. Not sure why; I guess with all the new footage premiered on the Game Awards last week, there's a chance they consider that sort of work done for December already.
Whenever it happens, I'm hoping for at least one new Wii U title. We got Hyrule Warriors last year around the same time, and the 3DS got Majora's Mask in the last Direct.
@sinalefa - I updated my PS3 a few nights before Christmas when we got it many years ago. I probably would have done the same w/ the Wii U last year had I not gotten it for my birthday. If I buy another PS3 this year (it's on my short list for my new bedroom tv) I probably won't bother as it will mostly be a blu ray player and streaming device w/ less gaming.
I used to think they would do a Dec ND but now I'm not so sure. I hope they are all too busy at Nitnedo HQ trying to figure out how to get more Gamecube adpaters and amiibo to market to be making frivolous youtube videos. Mid Jan would be a good time for one to announce the new 3DS in the west.
Can't wait to finally pick up Phoenix Wright Trilogy. Never played them except for watching SuperJeenius's lets play of the first few chapters of the original and loving it. My last pick up of the year.
@ricklongo - "I'm hoping for at least one new Wii U title"
If there's only 1 it should be amiibo based. Those trinkets in HW in MK8 aren't much, by next Christmas they'll need a game that supports them at least as much as SSBU, if not more. I know Mario Party is still due out but I'm thinking bigger.
Not that amiibo need any help selling, more like need helping getting in stock, but after the holiday hoopla settles down people will need more reason to buy these next year.
Well I would pick up the Phoenix Wright Trilogy but alas Crapcom only will bring it out digitally for us in NA cause I guess we're not good enough for a physical version. Guess I will just buy the DS copies used.
Once again no MOON. Nintendo needs to offer fans refunds IMHO. I wish I could beat up the liars who released that game. Give me my money back. You lost what WAS a lifelong fan
I don't understand why NA always has to wait months or even years after the best VC games are released in JP and Europe before we get them...it started back during the Wii days as VC titles such as the Final Fantasy SNES titles released in EU as much as 14 months before they released in NA...
I'll give Lucadian Chronicles a shot!
You know... I love my little boy.
And my little girl.
And my horse.
I'm good nothing here for me this week.
I know several of you have mentioned your shock at Angry Birds being $50. But, let's marinate on that a little bit. Someone needs to tell Rovio that nobody is into Angry Birds any more. And with them laying off a ton of people, it makes no sense to offer a game that you can get on a phone for $1 at the prices they are showing here. Either we will see the prices drop like a rock in the coming weeks, or Rovio will stick their heads straight up their own butts, keep their non-iphone/android prices that high, and watch their company go up in smoke.
Everyone on this board should advise people NOT to buy those games at those prices. It's the only way they'll learn.
wake me up when NOA decide to release DKC , golden sun 2 or any good VC games . tired of those crappy nes games
@Sir_Teabag If it had japanese i would download it but meh... nothing for me there...
Bad week...
@ThomasBW84 when do you think there will be a lucadian chronicles review?
@Ryo_Hazuki-san i wish it had japanese in it also, that would make it even better...
@edgedino Someone's already on the review, but I don't want to make any promises. Remember that you can always download it for free to give it a try.
I would not even buy Spikey Walls for $0.69.
@rjejr I think there's still a chance for a Nintendo Direct next week like it was in 2013 (18th December last year) as this month feels very barren in terms of new stuff. I don't see Nintendo taking the approach of US getting Captain Toad only while everyone else suffers, last year we got a few huge surprises (NES Remix, Yoshi's Island DLC for Sonic Lost World and a few other things on the day of the Direct).
I feel that with this GC adapter and amiibo stock nonsense, making Smash Wii U the last big thing Nintendo shows this year is pretty much the worst thing they could do. As for the US, even releasing the DKC and DKL trilogies on the 18th December I think would be enough as I'm sure many are expecting those to come around April.
@Undead_terror Is Woah Dave good? I'm thinking of buying it since there's a sale.
@ThomasBW84 I am but i'm aperson who likes to know how expansive something is like the total number of cards.
Another World for me.
$50 for Angry Birds? Yeah, that's a good one. Seriously though, how much does it actually cost? Like, 99 cents?
Armillo is 50% off as well.
I for one loved the slow tekst in the original. It kept me following the story at a certain pace. I kind of miss it in modern adaptations.
I can see at least $3 for Angry Birds on Nintendo Systems but not $50. Activision should rethink how to sell them their games.
Angry Birds Star Wars 49.99 I'm not only livid but offended. Prices seem to be sky rocketing on this shop. Steel Empire is a perfect example also of how stubborn they will be and would rather software rot instead of actually selling the software. It's now on sale at a decent price but I don't know if 15.99 is even low enough for that type of game to even have heavy sales. I'm sorry but I see prices getting rediculously high. Persona Q, Angry Birds Star Wars and Steel Empires are just a few titles which not only offend, but frustrate. I still believe that downloadable retail games should be at least 15 bucks cheaper than the cartridge release. Come On Man!
I think I will look into Harvest Moon 3.
The 3DS Angry Birds Star Wars Trilogy @ $49.99 has got to be a typo. I picked up the retail game used last night for $7.95 at Game-X-Change. What a joke...
Wish Capcom would release Ace Attorney Trilogy physically, it isn't easy to always have to delete some of your games just to get a full game
Blahk , yuck, phooey , but that's ok I'm in back log.
If you remotely like twin-stick shooters/ wave survival shooters, I HIGHLY recommend Monster Shooter. One of my top 15 eShop titles, definitely.
@Windy Steel Empire is certainly worth $15. There's more than enough content, top notch gameplay, and an excellent presentation to make that case.
If someone isn't going to get it at a very reasonable $15, then they never will.
For .99 cents Woah Dave is soooooooooooooo mine. I'll probably grab Another World on the U, loved it to death on the 3DS. Xeo will be mine soonish.
Time to get Another world it seems. I'll wait for a discount on the phoenix wright trilogy and save my money for the DKC games when they arrive.
@Mega719 Sounds like you need to upgrade your SD card.
@Windy Nintendo has no control over those prices as they didn't publish them. The digital version is the same price as the physical because of the retailers, who can threaten to not carry said company's games. Retailers don't like losing money on digital sales.
Nothing on this list for me this week, except for maybe whoa! Dave. Like others on here I keep hoping for a specific virtual console trilogy that Europe got recently, hopefully before the end of the year so I can get the digital deluxe points for them.
I'll give Lucadian Chronicles a shot,it's for free so no harm done if i don't like it.
@Grumblevolcano @rjejr A Nintendo Direct section has mysteriously appeared on the 3DS eShop this week, which may or may not be hinting at anything.
@SpaceCoyote That's what my thought was in seeing this week's listing. Well hopefully Christmas brings us the DK titles Europe already has.
@3DSfan134 99 cents for a high rated game, I would think!
@IceClimbers thanks for your words of advice Captain Obvious
Neat. $50 for a collection of free mobile games everyone plays while pooping. Pass.
I'll definitely buy Xeodrifter and I might get Another World. Steel Empire looks like a solid purchase @ $16 as well. Glad I recently got a $50 eShop card.
Has anyone else noticed that Nintendo's Crash 'n the Boys Street Challenge (Wii U) info page says it's on sale for $1.00? It's also on the eShop Offers page, but it's not on sale in the eShop.
I've been sitting on Another World (no pun intended) for quite some time, but now I see it's 1/2 off (and $8 wasn't even that much for this game). I will quickly be downloading this gem whether I got time for it or not.
WOW, actual GAMES and lots of them for the 3DS this week! It's a miracle!
@IceClimbers - Yeah I noticed that and clicked on it immediatly but it just listed the old one from Nov and Smash 50. I think the ND section was just put there as a diversion so nobody would notice the $50 Angry Birds games. Not that I was going to buy them but if they are new on the eShop shouldnt they be easy to find? Some gold coins next to Sonic for the games on sale was hidden enough as it was.
@sinalefa @ThomasBW84 Did you two get the eShop in box notice from Nintendo about DDP expiring at the end of the month? I guess that makes it official then. Not exactly the Christmas present I was looking for from Nintendo. And I was even going to buy armillo fpr $4 but now Im annoyed.
Oh wow harvest moon 3 came out of bowhere
@rjejr It's always been the case, since day one, that the promotion expires on 31st December this year, right there in the small print
It'd be better if Nintendo just extended it indefinitely, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be on the cards.
Hi guys, I know it's nothing special, but please give Hazumi a try!
Here are some promo codes for you (they work only in US eShop):
UVFG-122478-000018,A06VVWJT3AMGG7CD
UVFG-122478-000019,A06VVWJU03497F0W
UVFG-122478-000020,A06VVWJV0DDAQAUV
UVFG-122478-000021,A06VVWJW1GPB99YP
UVFG-122478-000022,A06VVWK037N9D2X7
Have fun!
@rjejr
I need to check my eshop but Tom is right. They never promised anything and were clear since day 1.
Please dont let that deter you from getting Armillo. Fuzzywuzzy games has nothing to do with this. You can take my word and Jaxon's. The game is worth it.
@ThomasBW84 - Yes, I know that's always been the date, it's even on the DDP webpage w/ the weird address that I can never remember, but I know you've been waiting for an announcement as well as I have, you mentioned it in some article about what to expect in an ND before years end or something, so I think this is the first I've seen of Nintnedo making an announcement about it.
I mean, Nintendo must think it's news worthy if it's a new announcement in the "NEWS" box on the eShop, no?
@EyeCancer_Games : Bought the game yesterday, fun game, the 3D looks great in the game as well Thank you for adding a level editor too.
It was a nice surprise to see my Visitor font in the game
@sinalefa - See my reply to Tom above. I probably just should have replied to you in that one, it's early. But I sitll think it' sNEWS i fNintnedo sent out a NEWs announcment addressing it. That was my only point, Nintendo addressed it but sending out the announcement it was ending. I bet if that same announcement was on Twitter NL would have an article about it
@AENIGMA Your font rocks man, classic pixel font, used in many places. Although it's free, we should definetely tip you for it, as soon as we receive some money from Hazumi sales.
Hope you don't mind, that we modified some digits.
@rjejr
I actually see it as a "friendly reminder" rather than news. And since there is no other place in the eShop to put that, they threw it there.
I mean, how can this be news if we know about it since 2012?
@EyeCancer_Games : Thank you No need for a tip though, I make them free so anyone can use them
No problem with the modified digits, makes them more monospaced.
@EyeCancer_Games Always nice seeing devs here on the site. Thanks for giving codes out to the readers!
@TylerTreese Thank you for warm welcome! Hope the readers have fun with the game.
@EyeCancer_Games Thank you for the code! I've been playing the game and have ejoyed it so far. Great art style. So funny!
@sinalefa - It's "news" that they sent a "News" message reminding people that the program is ending, rather than just letting it end quietly. That's the news, the sending of the message, more than what's in the message which we already knew. ya know?
As for armillo - "You can take my word and Jaxon's." Jax buys everything and likes everything, I can't align myself w/ his game choices. But it is on sale until Jan 1 so I'll get a chance to pick it up before the sale ends, either w/ a $5 DDP credit or that will help me earn 1 which I'll then spend on S&S2. (my calendar obsession goes hand in hand w/ my planning obsession, I'm incapable of spontaneity, and Google has made it worse)
dang it when is Another World going on Sale?
I've been waiting since hearing this news for it and it's still not up.
@LegatoSkyheart Well, that's really strange. It says it will be discounted starting December 12th, and the eShop's update time for today has already past.
I hope it gets discounted soon.
@Olmectron: Thank you! The game get's challenging later on... Hope it's balanced right for you.
I want the AA trilogy but i refuse to buy it digital. I guess I'll be importing.
I will definitely be picking up the Ace Attorney Trilogy. Everything else looks nice, I might pick up Lucadian Chronicals as well.
Just came here to say this: If you haven't, buy steel empire. It's amazing, really satisfying and gorgeous.
Totally worth every penny! And on discount is definitely worth of your attention.
