Re: Talking Point: Moving To Smartphones Is Not The Answer For Nintendo

DerpSandwich

Here's my thing.

I don't think it has to be all or nothing, black or white. I think Nintendo would do well to start developing games that are specifically tailored to mobile platforms. Putting Animal Crossing and Pokemon on iOS is completely ridiculous. But making a simple endless-runner-style game with Mario on it and putting it on the app store isn't such a bad idea at all. The 3DS is for deeper games with real controls, so it wouldn't do any harm or cannibalize its market share to make quick, shallow experiences for the people that just plain aren't ever going to buy a 3DS. Basically, make games for two different audiences that aren't going to cross. If anything, playing Nintendo games on their iPads might even spark interest in the deeper experiences offered on 3DS. It's like getting a taste.

And even if they don't start making simple games for mobile devices, they could at least pay attention to the pricing model. If the app store is currently engaged in a "race to the bottom" and we can get a lot of great games (anyone who pretends like there aren't a lot hasn't looked) for next to nothing, why are we still paying $5 for some terrible old NES games? Even the still-great classics are hugely overpriced. Why would I pay ten bucks for some dumb little time-waster on the eShop when I can get the same thing on iOS for a buck or free? I'm not saying everything on the eShop is overpriced, but a lot of the games could do with a great price reduction. Nintendo needs to look at each game and price them accordingly with regards to amount of content and the price of competition. Don't make everything free, but at least take note of what others are doing. A buck for a game that they made 25 years ago is still a huge profit, considering all they've had to do since then is port it around. (Though I suppose this entire second argument could be considered moot, seeing as everyone continues to buy old Mario games again and again and again...)

Re: Review: Witch & Hero (3DS eShop)

DerpSandwich

@LordGeovanni I just played the demo and actually enjoyed it a surprising amount. But are there really only ten more stages left in the game after the demo? Even with the EXTREME simplicity of the gameplay and with that enormous map left to explore? I might have bought it if it had a hundred levels, or maybe even fifty, but twenty? Say it ain't so.

Re: Nintendo Addresses Confusion Surrounding Wii U's Name In Latest TV Commercial

DerpSandwich

I made this exact same rant the last time they made a new ad "explaining the difference" between the systems. In this one, she still said, "upgrade" instead of "brand new system."

THAT'S STILL CONFUSING.

Seriously, how many times is this going to happen? How many more commercials are going to go live, claiming to put the issue to rest, only to not just say "new system"? Every last person in their ad department needs to be fired.

Re: Oh Yes, The Mario Galaxy Stage is Confirmed for the New Super Smash Bros.

DerpSandwich

I hate how if I don't want spoilers for the new Smash Bros I have to literally stop coming to gaming sites. They seem to want to spoil every last thing before the game releases.

And I'm not getting on anyone's case or anything, I know this is all a part of the industry. It's just funny that there won't be a story mode because people tend to spoil it, and at the same time the creators themselves are showing us everything else. With no surprises and no story mode, I'm thinking I'm going to skip out on this iteration, to be honest.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 13th November Broadcasts

DerpSandwich

Nintendo's attempt to cater to the internet crowd is endearingly lame. XD

And forgive me if everyone's already mentioned this, but the girl on the elevator is Audrey Drake, who recently left IGN for a job at Nintendo. So this ND was EXTRA fun!

EDIT: Oop, yep, looks like a few others caught it. I thought maybe I was the only one who used IGN as a supplement. Though to be honest I have no idea why I do...

Re: Nintendo Releases Handy Wii U Comparison Chart

DerpSandwich

@zeldagaymer93 Same here, every person I know who's not actively into Nintendo gaming. No one knows what it is. And Nintendo keeps coming out with ads and charts, saying, "Okay, NOW we're REALLY getting the message across," and they're just not. Each and every time either they mess it up or it's an ad that no one is going to see. They didn't just drop the ball--they've been unable to pick it up for a year now, and I just don't think it's going to happen.

Re: Nintendo Releases Handy Wii U Comparison Chart

DerpSandwich

You know what it STILL doesn't say? How the Wii U plays games with a new generation of graphics. I know it's obvious to us, but a lot of people are going to look at this and think the old Wii can't play the new games "just so you have to buy the new one." This chart mostly just makes it look like it's a Wii with more features that you have to buy for the new games. Not "the next thing."

I seriously don't understand why this is so hard for Nintendo. I'm starting to think their marketing department is run by monkeys. I feel like any schmuck could do better.

Re: Nintendo Releases New Pikmin 3 DLC in North America

DerpSandwich

@aaronsullivan Oh, I didn't realize that these weren't remixes. So I guess it makes them better.

But I definitely have beef with the other ones. With a simple level editor you could make those stages in about ten minutes. It's nothing more than changing the types of walls and obstacles, and plopping down different fruits and enemies. Think drop down menus and paint tools. They could give us a level editor so we could easily make levels like that, but why would they do that when they could spend an afternoon "remixing" old ones without even making new terrain (which also can't be too hard) and charge us a few bucks for it?

I don't know, that's just me. I mostly just really, REALLY want a Pikmin level editor. I would never leave the house again. XD

Re: Nintendo Releases New Pikmin 3 DLC in North America

DerpSandwich

Just like last time, I'm torn. If I buy it, I'm supporting what I deem to be extremely lazy DLC. But if I don't buy it, will Nintendo think "Well, I guess we should stop making Pikmin DLC since no one buys it"? I want to communicate to Nintendo that I don't want lazy DLC, but I don't want them to think I don't want it at all.

Mer.

Re: Nintendo Will Be "Careful" About The Artistic Direction Of Zelda In The Future

DerpSandwich

Twilight Princess to me was perfect--"realistic" and darker, but still with plenty of cartoony qualities. I did like Wind Waker a whole lot too, in its own way. It's the in-between of Skyward Sword that I hate. It's not realistic enough to look good and it's not cartoony enough to be creative and fun. It's just bland, flat, texture-less color. I know a lot of people liked the mid-ground, but I thought it was the worst of both worlds.

I do wish they would return to TP style for their amazing new game on an amazing new system, but if they don't, I just hope they go with something unique and fun like they did with Wind Waker.

Re: Feature: Where Is Your Wii Balance Board?

DerpSandwich

I sold it after I stopped using it. I'm not sure if Wii Fit U is going to sell as well as Nintendo hopes, as I'm sure there really are a whole lot of people out there who are going to pass based on how they eventually stopped using the Wii versions.

Re: Readers Of EDGE Consider Ocarina Of Time And Mario 64 To Be The Best Games Of The Last 20 Years

DerpSandwich

@ACK I certainly get one wallop of a dose of nostalgia whenever I pop the game in, for sure! Nothing takes me back to my childhood like that castle theme.

While getting a lot of the stars is a bit too easy and simple for me, I really do love and miss the open level design. Everyone gets on my case when I dis Galaxy (and more recently 3D World), but I haven't greatly enjoyed a Mario game since Sunshine. I value exploration over all things, so none of the Mario games since have been able to capture the same feeling in me as 64 and Sunshine. It makes me sad that they probably won't ever return to the formula. They seem bent on making everything fun but super linear.
