Re: Soapbox: After Years Of Lengthy RPG Tutorials, Golden Sun Feels Fresher Than Ever

Darknilious

I love the first game, perhaps too much since it was stolen along with my GBA SP. I eventually got The Lost Age however I was unable to get very far and was very upset that I couldn't transfer my save from the original game. I occasionally go back to Lost Age however I just can't seem to progress past the first bit. I also did enjoy Dark Dawn, the only critique I had was that it seemed a little streamlined versus the GBA games Still very enjoyable and the attack cutscenes were great. Definitely worth playing.

Re: Eiji Aonuma Comments On The Possibility Of A Playable Zelda In The Future

Darknilious

I could see them giving her a smaller-budget game to test the waters not unlike the Peach solo games. It would be interesting if they called it the Legend of Link to keep things consistent.

Additionally, it would be cool if you could just switch between the two like in many other games or pull a witcher and have certain sections of the game you play as Zelda and others as link. Then you can open of co-op as well. Lots of way to slice it. Like in TotK, you could have played as Zelda in the past and had to do certain tasks to make things available for Link in the future.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Wins Best Action/Adventure Game At TGA 2023

Darknilious

As a huge fan of both Zelda and Larian games and playing a ton of both TotK and BG3 I have to say that they made the right choice. TotK is a great game but for me at least it had diminishing returns do to the similarities to BotW - don't get me wrong I love it's continuing the story. I am invested in knowing what happens but I am less eager to collect every armor, complete all the shrines and search for all those damn seeds again. Not that you need to do all those things to enjoy the game, however, the game actively encourages you and I don't know about you but I am an obsessive completionist in my Zelda games. So my TofK game started to feel like work like I was just making sure I was checking all the boxes. Still a great game and I love playing with the new mechanics, but I can't find it in me to go back to it and complete the game. BG3 on the other hand drew me despite a lot of bugs, and performance issues and it not saving my games for the first couple of days. The crazy amount of writing and the interesting characters wrapped in a world that like TofK encourages experimentation hooked me. Also like TofK your avatar is weirdly mute. Where TotK is all about exploration, and puzzle solving - BG3 is all larger-than-life characters, crunchy TBS combat, and making the least bad decisions and then save scuming if everything goes to pot. Different beasts but for my money Larian's Covid game has more heart and ultimately the better game. That being said, what a year 2023 has been for video game releases - I haven't touched StarField or the other dozens of great releases that have come out this year.

Re: Review: Wargroove 2 - A Must-Play Tactical RPG And A Worthy Successor To Advance Wars

Darknilious

It's been awhile since I played the original however I remember not liking it as AW successor. One thing was having to babysit a hero unit that loses the scenario if they die. I remember a large number of the levels centering on those heroes. That was very annoying. The war grooves didn't have much of a impact either. It was well polished game and it's charming. Just rather have heroes be off screen or optional and can be repurchased as needed. I forget if in this one you could merge troops or not.

Re: Deals: New Best Buy Promotion Lets You Pick Up Free Nintendo Switch Games

Darknilious

So if I understand this right, you would have to buy 6+ games to see a real benefit. Assuming you are getting the $60 games you are only getting a net %20 off. 60*6 = 360 + 50= 410 - 120 = 290/ 360. I could see some specific scenarios where this would be tempting but for the average buyers there are equal or better deals that do not require this amount of money down at once.

Re: Glow-In-The-Dark Zelda: TOTK Keychain Now Available Via My Nintendo Rewards

Darknilious

@daveMcFlave I have to admit that Metroid poster set is pretty nice, I have it framed myself. Though there is bit of shrinkflation happening with the poster sets when compared to the ones offered by Club Nintendo. The big thing I am thinking of the Club Nintendo Platinum rewards. Those were very nice - giant pin sets, statues, special card sets and full retail games. bygone era.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom: All amiibo Unlocks

Darknilious

I have most of the Amiibo but I am glad that they added the sets to the world so it doesn't exclude those who don't or like me don't have all the sets. Some of those Amiibos are very hard to get without paying up the nose - looking at you Wind Waker Link and Zelda! I am fine with the cosmetic stuff being exclusive to Amiibos since I can take/leave cosmetic things in games anyways. Good job striking a balance Nintendo.

I did like that my horses are still in the stable, that was very cool and unexpected. Makes me wonder what happened to my Zero cycle though. I guess that went away with the rest of Link's powers when he got zapped in the beginning on the game?

Re: Mario Movie Just The Beginning Of Nintendo & Illumination's "Rewarding Collaboration"

Darknilious

The Mario movie was great though and I don't understand the hate it gets from Nintendo fans. Like what are you expecting from a Mario movie? The godfather? Citizen Kane? this a character that started as Jump Man for crying out loud, and all the plot for the games could fill 1 chapter in a book. Then Nintendo let Hollywood make a more complicated story out of the threads back in the 90s and that we got Dennis Hopper as bowser. Now we got Jack Black and a movie that matches the tone and intention of the games and made under the watchful eyes of the creator of Mario himself. Is the movie absolutely stuffed with references and cameos from all things Mario? Yes absolutely, and I am here for it. They did amazing job bringing together many of the properties that Mario has been in over the years in a way that is entertaining.
If you want a movie that has more of a plot you could watch Detective Pikachu, which actually wasn't that bad either.

Re: Mario Movie Just The Beginning Of Nintendo & Illumination's "Rewarding Collaboration"

Darknilious

I for one would love to see Zelda in the flesh and blood and would be the one property that would have the greatest chance for success. I wonder if that "leaked" Netflix Zelda series was actually a thing and if so I wonder what it would have been like.

Metroid could be awesome live action if they don't spend most of the time with Samus outside the suit and thinking about Adam, looking at you Metroid other M, or like they did with Master Chef in Halo. That's how you ruin property right there. Maybe stick to animated, probably has a better shot at being the badass loner She is meant to be.

Re: Nintendo's Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom TV Ad Might Be Its Best One Ever

Darknilious

And the bit about this guy being a bus Ken. If his bus is anything like mine - you wouldn't be able to hear it over the noise of the bus and other people anyways and who knows maybe everyone around him was super invested in his play throw. In person on location streaming. Related - that has happened to me while waiting in line at a couple of conventions.

Re: Nintendo's Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom TV Ad Might Be Its Best One Ever

Darknilious

Great Ad, reminds me on how BotW got me through the dark days of working a dead end job and 2 new borns and a exhausted wife waiting for me at home. Playing BotW on breaks was the only thing keeping me going for awhile. It just speaks to the power of these games for sure. Everyone needs a escape now and then, its doesn't have to be video games but mine definitely is. It is cheaper then travel, doesn't require other people, and you can experience it anywhere at anytime.

Re: Random: Yes, The District 9 & Gran Turismo Director Would Be Interested In Making A Metroid Movie

Darknilious

I would have loved to see his Aliens Movie, the concept art looked amazing.
Not sure if he would be a good fit for a Metroid movie - Nintendo seems to be shying away from big named directors probably because they will want too much creative control.

Maybe Movie wouldn't be the right format for Metroid, at least not straight out of the gate. I would rather see a animated or live action series first. I think Metroid would be better served that way.
Frankly the same for Legend of Zelda - I see a lot of potential for a Zelda show(s).

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom "Hands On" Performance & Resolution Detailed

Darknilious

I was really hoping, along with a large contingent of ever hopefuls, that this would launch with more powerful hardware. If you believe the random rumors that came out over the years, there was supposed to be a refresh with advanced hardware that titles like Tears of the Kingdom, The latest Pokemon and Bayonetta 3 would have benefitted from. The assumption is that the pandemic and shortage of parts and how well the lite and OG did they settled eventually with just the OLED version we got. So anyone who was building their games to take advantage of that had to scale back their games or put it on the self. I think the plan was to make all these games to be graphically scalable since they would want games to work with the base models and the Pro. Granted the base models might struggle a bit and help sell the ability of the Pro. If that was true it would explain why all the recent first and second party games struggle graphicly - almost as if they have more powerful hardware in mind.
For Nintendo, as long as they are getting the money and that money flow isn't slowing they will keep on keeping on with this old before it came out 6 year old hardware. We still do not even have folders or themes.
For myself all I can say is that Tears of the Kingdom will be my last Nintendo game for awhile. Exemptions being Metroid and/or Advance Wars. Or A new StarFox or F-Zero. Oh Nintendo I can't stay mad at you.

Re: Dotemu Is Bringing 'Might & Magic: Clash Of Heroes' Back On Switch This Summer

Darknilious

I picked this up because I was obsessed with the idea of have a Heroes of Might and Magic game on the DS at the time. Obviously this was not that but it wasn't a quick cash-in of the franchise I feared it to be at first glance either. I ended up enjoying it so much that I actually played the campaign 3 times (and I usually never relay games) and kept coming back for the quick play against the computer as well. I recently got the game on Steam and played it on the Steam Deck with the I am Boss DLC that wasn't on the DS version and I am less interested. Maybe I just played it to death or there is just too many other modern games begging for my attention but I have not played it for more then a hour or 2.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp?

Darknilious

9/10. I bought this to support future of Advance Wars games. I hope the release Dual Strike and Days of Ruins next. Better yet, make a new entry that modernizes the game a bit and shake things up. Hopefully they are taking notes from that AW inspired game called Warside that just recently ended their Kickstarted campaign. They are including a laundry list of features that AW players have long wished for.

Re: Warside Blasts Onto Kickstarter With Advance Wars-Inspired Turn-Based Tactics

Darknilious

Is this a shameless lift from Advance Wars to the point I had to look very closely at the video and screen shots to see it wasn't in fact just Advance Wars? Yes. Am I outraged? No, Nintendo has had plenty of time to do something with this IP and chose to leave it far behind. No the Advance Wars 1+2 doesn't count since it is a remake not a new game. I will be buying both and as excited as I can be. I will also get Wargroove 2. It's a banner year for TBS strategy!

Re: Soapbox: Switch Is Great, But The GBA SP Was The Pinnacle Of Public Transport Gaming

Darknilious

I have so many mixed emotions about this poll. On one hand I play the Steam Deck on my bus commutes now and its hard to envision not being able to play Elden Ring on the go however I remember I have used everyone Nintendo hand held starting with the OG Game Boy for trips. I do think the GBA SP fit a great sweet spot for size, functionality and the games on offer. The 3DS occasionally fit in my pockets if I was wearing cargo pants/shorts or in jackets but the battery life was laughable unless you upgraded the battery which would increase the bulk. I do miss the street passes though, that was absurdly entertaining. in fact it became a obsession to get people from all the different states and countries for years. Going to or even by conventions was primarily street pass fodder lol.

Re: Review: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet - An Open-World Poké Playground Full Of Promise (And Tech Issues)

Darknilious

@Jeronan I am talking about how old and under powered the Switch was from the start so its really not surprising that this game like many before just doesn't run well. Its true that has been a lot of successful 1st party and 3rd party games that do run good, the devs always talk about all the compromises made and the tricks employed to get those games running. to your point yes if Gamefreak screwed the pooch on this and that is why I said they needed either to hold off or get some help from the companies like Monolith.

What would really help is to have more powerful hardware so that you don't need to use every technical trick in the book to make your game work half way decent. That is my 2 cents anyways.

Re: Review: Pokémon Scarlet And Violet - An Open-World Poké Playground Full Of Promise (And Tech Issues)

Darknilious

It is hardly surprising since we have consistently seen games struggle with the Switches' hardware from the beginning. What is surprising is that they didn't take away anything from the other open world games in Nintendo's wheel house. This game should have been delayed and gotten Monolith to assist, waited to be a launch title for the next system or should have been paired down their ambitions for this title.

Re: Nintendo Releases Stunning New Story Trailer For Fire Emblem Engage

Darknilious

Having played every other FE game released in the West I feel that I have enjoyed Three houses the least - which to be clear I still enjoyed and played all the way to the end of 1 route. I guess I didn't really enjoy the whole school concept and having to tediously run around a big hub to get the most out of my fighters between missions. I am here for the fights, characters, and story in that order.

I am hoping that Engage focuses more on the core elements of the game and less on walking, talking and dating simulation.

Re: Nintendo Introduces Chloe In Fire Emblem Engage

Darknilious

I like boobies well enough but I like not to having to hide my screen from my wife and kids out of embarrassment. These anime games continue to make that challenging. I miss the old Fire Emblem art design that was more medieval fantasy and less anime dating fan servicey.

Re: Random: Valve's Latest Steam Deck Trailer Briefly Shows A Switch Emulator

Darknilious

I for one love the idea of having all my paid Nintendo games to the Steam Deck, however in practice I already played those games so they would just take up valuable space and for the ones I haven't played - If I didn't play or finish them on the original console what are the chances I would by emulating it to another? Low, very low.

Not to mention the cost and time involved with the ripping all those games to roms. I have some many games on my backlog that its just not worth it. Hell I am getting free games left and right from Amazon, Epic and even Steam.

Re: Random: Wii U Emulation On Valve's Steam Deck Supports Gyro Controls

Darknilious

@Jokerwolf If I know Nintendo, with their aged tech philosophy - it will be out of date at announcement. Will launch with BOTW 2 and we will go bananas... for a while. To give this now system legs they need to invest heavily in their digital store and make all their games available and continue to be available for future hardware and for the love of god allow us to just own the games.

Re: Random: Wii U Emulation On Valve's Steam Deck Supports Gyro Controls

Darknilious

@jrt87 I can not agree more. Steam Deck is everything I wanted from a Switch Pro/2 and more. I love my Nintendo - been with them since the mid-80s but if I have a choice to buy the same game for the same money (or often cheaper) and get to play that not only on the deck but on my current computer or any future computer... Its a better deal. Yes I will stay for the big N IPs but nothing else. And when they come out with a new system I am going to think real hard if its worth it. That equation will depend on how mobile my games are - will they be stuck on the aged hardware I bought it on or will they come up with something like a steam library.

Re: Talking Point: How Were You Introduced To Metroid?

Darknilious

@mr_benn

Same I got it with my GB for my Birthday and got stuck and then bored and eventually traded to one of my brothers for Mario Land. Now that was a great GB game ( at least for 8 year old kid).

The next game was Metroid Prime which got me hooked on the franchise so I gave Fusion a shot. Eventually I did rally back to Return of Samus playing it on the 3DS via the free ambassador game. Having the internet and the ability to save helped make short work of the game.

Re: The Creator Of Fire Emblem Has Released A Brand New Strategy RPG On Steam

Darknilious

I just read about this game on RPS. Did consider it for the Steam Deck but playing the wonderful Symphony of War. I do hope they consider bringing both games to the Switch.

As far as it's relevancy to the site, its more so then some of the articles as of late - at least it is a game from a dude who made Nintendo games and there could be a chance it comes to the system.
