Really solid list and I know it's only Part One, but I would have added Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn, and Xenoblade Chronicles (yes I know there's a new 3DS version, but release this much later for those who don't want a new 3DS, because it's pretty much unavailable to buy on Wii physical). They're both games I missed out on, and are pretty much impossible to get now.
I have 6000+ stars on my Club Nintendo (that I've been saving up over a long time for like say, a statue, like the Luigi's Mansion 2 one, which was really well made), I'm assuming these won't be transferable to the New system that's launched in replacement, but come on Nintendo, for Majora's Mask release, at least put some new stuff up in Club Nintendo Europe (there hasn't really been anything noteworthy recently—golfballs, even as a golfer I say no thanks—pin badges, too pricy for what they give, only really the T-shirt is good, but even then there have been better ones). Anyways, like everyone else has said, I do hope this new system leads to account based, as then I will have more assurance with buying Nintendo products digital.
@Einherjar I also thoroughly enjoyed Lost World, but my only issue with the game (aside from the painlessly easy boss fights as you mentioned) were the amount of 2D sections. Sonic games generally have great 3D and 2D sections, but Lost World really shined most when it was 3D, while its 2D sections just weren't as interesting (which were quite a major part of the game).
@JaxonH That's a really sound argument that I agree with myself. However, I do find myself wondering, even though region locking has its benefits, there are some negative impacts. For example, should someone from the UK (who has a 3DS with many games from the region) move to the US, they wouldn't be able to buy any games for their system (even though both PAL and NTSC have English). So in that case, if you're moving around regions of the world, region locking can be an inconvenience.
Never played Majora's Mask before (only 3D Zelda I haven't played), I've got the Limited Edition New console with it preordered, the game looks truly incredible. I'm glad I waited for the remake instead of buying it on Wii VC.
On a side note, do any of you think that the fact that the game is coming out on Friday the 13th is just pure coincidence, or on purpose by Nintendo?
Pretty appropriate tagline of "Marry-o" because even though I live in the UK, I simply can't stand the way that UK promotional adverts pronounce Mario's name as Marry-o/Mare-eo instead of Ma-rio. All jokes aside, congratulations to the two.
A question for the author of this article. How does the game look on the New 3DS screen (because pictures and videos of 3DS games in action never seem to do it justice).
@Damo THIS (For example, us in the UK have to wait for "second half 2015" for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse whilst North America gets it in February, but you don't see us complaining).
Anyways, got the Majora's Mask Limited Edition Console with Limited Edition Skull Kid Statue+Charger for £210. Can February come any sooner?!
@ZenTurtle Well yeah, but it really depends on how "limited" this really is (the Bayonetta 2 First Print literally sold out within the hours) and you never do know with Nintendo these days (with how amiibo and Gamecube adapter have had limited supply).
Come on UK...Just put up the Majora's Mask Limited Edition New 3DS XL up for preorder, (I really don't want to wait only for it to come up while I'm not available and have it sell out abruptly).
@Superstick Even though I'm really not a fan of the guy's videos (boggles me how many subscribers he has), that might actually do wonders for Nintendo's publicity.
Cool, thanks! I was meaning to preorder the Majora's Mask 3DS LE from Nintendo Store anyways, but I guess this is a nice freebie for getting it anyways.
Wii U retail: Mario Kart 8 (it was MK8 v. Smash for me, but the DLC Pack 1 really solidified MK8 for me)
Wii U eShop: Shovel Knight (Played it on Wii U, 3DS, and PC-all outstanding)
3DS Retail: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire-really thought that they did a tremendous job with the remakes making them really stand out and feel fully fleshed, 1000000x better than X and Y (although those games were good). They're still my favourite Pokémon games of all time (even surpass R/B/Y even though those are the ones I grew up on)
3DS eShop: Shovel Knight
Overall: Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire (may be unpopular opinions, but I think truly deserved).
@ricklongo I'm going to go with something different, and suggest it's just these kids (the ones in the video)'s attention span and impatience. They're not really getting the gist of how you play a 2D platformer. You don't just keep running for the end not pressing anything hoping for the best; the point is that you take your time, explore, be strategic about these things, or even just try your best. These kids have grown up in an age of technology where everything in itself is instantaneous and quick, and things come in short-bursts and they're not really used to concentrating on things for long spans of time; they just do something and move on. In reference to your girlfriend's nephew who you mentioned loves MegaMan and was able to blast through, I think that's more of him perhaps not being as enamoured to things like mobile phones, and rather the creative, eager to learn spirit of a child coming through (which is what games really capture).
I agree with #1/Most of Gen 5, but I just can't see the others as hideous at all. On a side note, did anyone else see a resemblance in voice between Alex Olney and Yahtzee Croshaw from the Escapist?
@aaronsullivan I thought Nintendo reported a few months ago that they were selling Wii U's without loss now, but I may be mistaken. In any case however, the only thing I find important for the Wii U is that the top-notch first party games come (which they have been, and will definitely continue to in 2015), and that Nintendo is at least making profit for it so they continue to support it and that they don't lose money of off it. Nevertheless, I was really surprised at how well amiibo sold and could very well single-handedly turn the tides of the Wii U's sales should Nintendo choose to capitalise on it.
@sinalefa [Laughs] Yeah, I miss reading them too [Laughs].
In seriousness I do, and I always love when NintendoLife puts out articles with developers like these; it gives some insight into how it was like making the game for them and what they had to consider.
I liked the Secret Bases concept in the original and like the new 'Super' Secret Bases in ΩRAS. However, I find it absolutely ridiculous that the only way to get the Garchompite (a stone that many will want to use) through collecting 1000 flags. That's just too much - I'm fine with maybe 50 flags, but 1000 - not everyone will play online/streetpass and unfortunately, it's the only way to use Mega Garchomp in that game because unless you trade with someone that has Mega Garchomp, it's impossible because Pokémon Bank doesn't let you store Pokémon holding items (so you can't transfer your Mega Garchomp from X and Y).
This game is looking real good, and definitely one of my most hyped games for 2015. Everything about it is just so fresh, new and relaxing. I was sold by the game at E3, but as time passes, it just keeps on looking better and better.
The article is well written, using a variety of good arguments, but ultimately the idea of a Nintendo Phone is (in my opinion) one of the WORST decisions that Nintendo could ever make. Firstly, it would be a flop like others have said (since gaming phones aren't successful and people don't buy phones for games, they're just an extra), and there's just too much competition. Secondly, it would completely ruin the purpose of their handhelds, and might actually hurt that division. Lastly and simply, it's not what they're here to do: they make video games (and systems for it), they don't do phones, and the argument that they started out as a card and toys company is simply irrelevant; they became renowned for their video games (how big was Nintendo really back before video games).
Woah! I knew it would do good, but I didn't know it would be that good. I guess it will be the best selling 3DS game just like the originals were for Gameboy. Much deserved though for my favourite Pokémon games (Gen 3 was the best for me, even though I started with Gen 1). The remakes were very well done, and there was a lot of content added in, not just some graphics touch ups.
Omega Ruby arrived yesterday from Nintendo Store for me (a day early)! The game's the same masterpiece it was when I played it 11 years ago. I haven't had this much fun with Pokémon, or even a video game, in a long while. Now I'm just waiting for Smash Wii U today.
@Kaze_Memaryu Even worse if the freezing occurs DURING the period of which the game saves after you beat the Hall of Fame (I really hope that doesn't happen to me).
9/10 is an amazing score, don't know why people are mad. It got 9's mostly across the board (well there were 9.5's etc. and even IGN gave it a 9.8), but that's just the way NintendoLife's Review scale works, it has to be whole numbers (at least to my knowledge). It makes sense then, to round down to 9, but not round up to 10 (because rounding a score to the perfect score is a bit much). Just my opinion though.
@Rafie I share your stance completely, and people really do forget that up until the Arkham games, Batman games were just plain bad. With Arkham Knight finishing up the Arkham trilogy, I think Rocksteady will definitely open up to revitalise Superman in video games (and regarding your last statement, whilst it wasn't without faults, I thoroughly enjoyed Man of Steel).
@Rafie Get the voice cast of Superman: The Animated Series on there too (it did wonders for the Arkham games having Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill as Batman and The Joker).
I don't think this is too unlikely as my copy of SSB 3DS had this problem where it is unable to play Classic Mode (and the system then proceeds to restart). I've sent the game to Customer Service in Nintendo about 6 weeks ago, and first they had no idea what happened, then they lost the game, and now a replacement is supposed to come soon (which they said like 3 weeks ago). My copy of SSB U better be problem free considering the utter torture I've had to deal with with the 3DS version.
@ColdingLight It's not a competitor right now, but there has been a lot of talk as of late, with Amazon hiring game developers etc., to release their own video game console with games. While there's not guarantee that it'll be a competitor, people are speculating regardless that Amazon will release a budget console with approachable games, that'll take away all of the casual market, thus jeopardising Nintendo with the taking away of that market.
I do love my Wii U, although I can't help but see it as anything more than a secondary console to accompany PS4/X1/PC. That said, I've had much more enjoyment with the Wii U thus far, then my PS4, while X1 just doesn't interest me at this point (will likely pick one up at the end of the generation). As a gaming console as its own (the only gaming console you'll own), it's definitely a C-. However, if you grade it as a secondary console, I do think it's well worth an A(+).
On a minor note, there is a typo in the article: " Nintendo will likely simply target a return to profitability and modest success — improvement will be need to even reach GameCube levels, however." It should be "improvement will be need*ed* to even reach Gamecube Levels however."
"WHAT! There is no difference between 30fps and 60fps. I mean everyone knows that the human eye can only see 30fps, and 60fps is weird, and games are so much better at 30fps with that "cinematic feel" -Iterating PS4/X1 fanboys who try to justify things when their games are at 30fps, after the developers failed to reach their target goal of 60fps. Ironically, when their games do hit 60fps (See LOTU: Remastered, Halo MCC), they brag about this, awesome, silky-smooth experience, in spite of the fact that prior to 7th gen, 60fps was a gaming standard.
@dbobo I do somewhat agree, because like you, I also have played every Pokémon game in all of the generations. While I think what they're doing works, I do fear that it may get stale in the future. The only real way to take things to the next level to innovate the series is really just better hardware to be able to add new things, just like how the series was in top-down format until X and Y, which the newer hardware introduced full 3D (which is why they could make an amazing true Pokémon game on Wii U). Another thing that they could do is to stop making one every year, and instead make one every 2-3 years, thus that way, they have more time to add a plethora of new things to make each instalment fresh (kind of like the 3D Mario's-same platformer style, but each completely unique and fresh). Regardless, I am excited for ORAS as they were my favourite generation. I do recommend though that you try B2/W2, as in my opinion, they're one of the best in series, far outshining D/P/Pt, B/W, and even X/Y.
Happy Birthday to the man, who if not for him, we wouldn't be here commenting today, and the Wii U, PS4, X1, and all consoles before then wouldn't have existed.
I agree and disagree in the sense that I do believe games need to be great gameplay experiences first and foremost, with the story being treated once the gameplay is done. However, then I look at games, like the Mass Effect Trilogy for example, which executes story beautifully to immerse the player, whilst still keeping solid gameplay in there. I think that in order to have the best possible industry, one needs gameplay focused games, and story games as well (although the story games need solid gameplay), to make sure that there are as many variants of experiences one can have with gaming.
@Yorumi I completely agree. There's nothing wrong with size revisions (like XL), but complete hardware revisions that end up excluding your current user-base is shoddy business practice. I've got nothing against Nintendo, but when they do things like this, it's really sad, especially since they're the only major handheld video game device in the market at this point (Sony completely mishandled the Vita), so whatever they put out will be bought.
@Kaze_Memaryu This was my #1 problem with "New 3DS" since Day 1. Yes, the features may be appealing and useful, but the business practice is simply sneaky. While for now we've only heard of Xenoblade announced, but who knows, as time will tell, I wouldn't be surprised if eventually all major 3DS games are exclusive to the "New", which is a big insult to adopters of the regular ones.
@gatorboi352 What about Xenoblade Chronicles X (for next year) and Devil's Third? I understand what you're saying though, if the Wii U had a wider range of genres, so that everyone could enjoy it, then I'm sure more people would buy a Wii U. It's a shame that to get the widest gaming experience possible you need 2 consoles, or 1 console and 1 PC (Wii U and PS4/X1) (or Wii U and PC). The reality is that many people can't afford more than one console, so Wii U is not necessarily always a viable option for people. Nevertheless, like you, I'm going to support Watch Dogs for Wii U (despite already owning PC and PS4 versions), because if enough people buy, perhaps Ubisoft will reconsider to put their games on Wii U (at the end of the day, it's the money that counts).
@Ryu_Hazuki_san The other versions had online free roam from Day 1, and since Watch Dogs Wii U has a companion app and how other Ubisoft games for Wii U have had online, then I'm sure it'll have online free roam Day 1, if that's any consolidation.

Ironically, when their games do hit 60fps (See LOTU: Remastered, Halo MCC), they brag about this, awesome, silky-smooth experience, in spite of the fact that prior to 7th gen, 60fps was a gaming standard.
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Offers the Best of Both Worlds with Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto is Now 62 Years Old
Happy Birthday to the man, who if not for him, we wouldn't be here commenting today, and the Wii U, PS4, X1, and all consoles before then wouldn't have existed.
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Outlines Core Nintendo Philosophies, Not "Boring" Alternatives
Re: Nintendo Boasts New 3DS is its Best-Selling Remodelled Handheld System to Date
Re: Nintendo Boasts New 3DS is its Best-Selling Remodelled Handheld System to Date
Re: Watch Dogs Companion App Updated For Compatibility With Wii U
