Great read. I think many of us in the UK share similar gaming experiences in the 90s. From owning a Commodore 64 to getting a Mega Drive I was fortunate enough to have close neighbours and family with NES/SNES consoles and I owned a Gameboy myself so I had a very rounded experience.
What changed for me was going back and playing all the awesome Japanese games that either didn't get released here or had such a tiny presence hardly anyone knew they existed.
Great article, fun read. I want to be optimistic about Ultra SuMo but nothing shown yet is pulling me in and I say that as someone who has played all the previous enhanced versions.
Some of that stems from SuMo itself though, I suspect (which, as much as I enjoyed elements is probably my least favourite 'mon game).
One to pick up post-release some time, I'm in no rush yet. Let's see what the next round of reveals brings.
I would suggest following this fella's own work. The man has great talent and passion in his video game write-ups. Not afraid to throw a curveball to popular opinion but always comes across as honest.
Despite all it's silly performance issues, broken physics, million glitches, clunky mechanics, dumb UI choices and throwaway main plot, Skyrim is an absolute gem of a game for having the all important ingredient: FUN.
I am jealous of those who have yet to play it, it's a blast.
@Damo @Yasaal agreed, nothing wrong at all with the approach.
These are released elsewhere and are not part of the VC plus some of the quality on show more than justifies their presence.
However on another note, NINTENDO, PLEASE GIVE US A £€&##/@ CLUE ON VC. I'm kind of nervous as to how they'll handle it but quietly confident that we'll get some decent GC stuff.
For some reason I struggle on non-PlayStation rhythm games.
I'm pretty good on Hatsune Miku games on hard difficulty so I will definitely give this a shot but I think the X360-era ruined my co-ordination between X and Y (XBox to Nintendo pads).
Can't imagine it won't be addressed in the next 6 months or so. The annoyance of the terrible left JoyCon alternative d-pad really hit home when playing Sonic Mania.
Of course, as many have stated, having a d-pad for face buttons when you're using a single JoyCon would suck. Choice is key or maybe something with a removable element could be used?
It's one of those, for me: if it's the same price as buying digitally then sure, I wouldn't mind but there's no pull for the additional cost. Like many have said: Not even a booklet!
Surely they could see the value in putting both on one cartridge or even red/blue/yellow/gold/silver collection? No way that wouldn't justify it's cost to put out physical. Bet there would be an even bigger uptake than digital red/blue/yellow saw.
Practically zero effort for their dev team and there are plenty of low budget physical releases out there that manage fine.
I'm not convinced Nintendo will see any more Capcom 3DS support going forwards beyond maybe this collection - does seem an odd one to pass up on though as 3DS collection did OK, right? Surely the low budget requirements must be a draw there.
I can't see them passing on future Switch support though, Monster Hunter or otherwise, come 2018 they'll be plenty of support unless, by some weird twist, Nintendo botch the last quarter. The success is too much for anyone to ignore at this point, surely.
I don't have any reason to get up arms about this. The old icon looked legendary to some.
There's no denying it looks like shovelware now but there's no need to fire their designer. They could always look to the global community for better ideas, you know remix the design, master their craft, FAST!
Going back about a decade or so my local(ish) GAME stores seemed to employ people who actually cared about games.
Now they have no standards in terms of basic customer service. Every time I go in (admittedly VERY rare these days) they act like you're putting them out and never have a straight answer to ANYTHING. Rude, abrupt and condescending - I accept they won't all be this way but I'm taking about the vast majority of staff over a number of years between 2 different stores.
@gokev13 I'm the same, I can't handle touch controls for the most part. Might work alright given it's turned-based though. Worth putting up with for the story and charm though, I assure you
@gokev13 PS3 would be a good choice for raiding the back catalogue (inc FFs) for cheap. I'd say it's worth it just fir FFIX & X. Apparently the mobile port of FFIX is decent though I've never tried personally.
Right now is the perfect opportunity for publishers to get a big game o the Switch - the Switch lineup has room to accommodate and you would be guaranteed exposure on the shelves while the console is still selling out.
I suspect Skyrim will do better than some anticipate due to its timing.
@ValhallaOutcast it's less comfortable then the Vita and 3DS XL for me.
Even then, 3DS gives me cramps unless I attach the grip and I have a grip for the Vita. Play those more than any other so it's necessary. I know I'm not alone in this (I don't have big hands either).
@TeslaChippie I want to see all the JRPGs come over from Vita/3DS to Switch EXCEPT Etrian.
I can't do without the dual screen mapping, I hope it's becomes the equivalent of Just Dance (bear with me), coming out on the Wii years after the console died.
Just at the end of Untold 2 so I can't wait for 5.
My son (in the target market) did not look impressed. It looks fine and I like the fact that they're trying something fresh but I have doubts about them appealing to enough people to warrant this sort of set up.
Looks chunky for slapping on a pad and I can't imagine anyone (kids included) would want to switch weapons this way more than once or twice, instead of a simple button press (think AC amiibo Festival for rolling dice).
Good luck to them, though I guess as the game itself looks alright.
I think they should shy away from subject (as annoying as that approach is) simply because you don't want to completely alienate the pro community.
The pro community can be a strong contributer to longevity of game. That said, I don't think any of the games have the balance or depth of mechanics to interest that sort of 'pro/big money' crowd.
I do like the idea of 'competative gaming for the masses' though, providing skill is not entirely removed from the equation. I think they have hit a nice sweet spot with Smash, Splatoon and (hopefully) ARMS.
It's sorely lacking as it stands. I can't get behind the argument about the console having 'loads of games'. It has very very few games that haven't been round the block, and even less as a Wii U owner. It's really early days though.
On the other hand once we have ARMS, Splatoon 2, Xenoblade, Mario and Fire Emblem Warriors as well as whatever pops up at E3 + VC, it will be a different story.
The hardware is great though. In dire need of a few firmware updates for certain features but really great on the whole.
I think, come it's anniversary, it will have both a strong library and huge sales behind it. I'm convinced the future of the console is bright.
Personally I can't wait to see all the JRPGs that will inevitably find a home on the Switch.
The game is great and hope it does well enough for them to keep the IP going.
I really don't see it as a quick blast, type of game which a lot seem to resign it to. I can see this being a time sink, tweak your playstyle kind of game. Right between casual and serious.
@MadAdam81 same! My son had the JoyCons so I used the Pro Controller one round and one of the 1AM sessions I played in bed so handheld.
Plan to try the motion controls next time but the amount of wins makes me wonder if standard controls really are superior. On the other hand there's the fact that Mechanica may just be OP (people say it's the hammer but honestly, I'm fine without, it's definitely the air dodge), there's the fact that people haven't figured the game out properly yet and there's the fact that the tutorial is too brief to get the hang of it.
Either way, had an absolute BLAST playing as Mechanica, sooooo much fun.
@Anti-Matter 'shimatta'! Always an anime fave haha. Of course there's 'yare yare' (a phrase made even better by Jojo) and the classic 'naniiiiii' with extended i. Probs won't pop up in MonHun though!
But yeah, I can't see this not being announced in the West (probs E3). Definitely getting 2 in my household!
User rating on Metacritic is 7.6 which isnt bad. Most complaints are about the length but it's dirt cheap and speedrunning is really fun. Awesome soundtrack, too
Great review and extremely accurate conclusion - the game is hardcore, no doubt about it, but if you can invest the time, the Disgaea series is great. I especially enjoyed 3.
@ricklongo honestly, if you find Etrian to be menu-heavy you probably won't appreciate the Disgaea approach (x10). As much as I want to tell everyone under the sun to buy this game, it would be fairer to suggest trying the demo first.

Wow Mario console bundle saves you a whole -£10 (or £0 if you concede digital is more expensive). Thanks, Nintendo.

Re: Square Enix's Hajime Tabata Hints That Final Fantasy XV Could Be Coming To Switch
It's really not going to be the full version, not a chance.
I think what could make this mobile version interesting though, is local multiplayer. Looks like it could fit, not sure if it will actually happen...

Re: PC Game Streaming Service Rainway Confirms Switch As A Supported Platform
@Mopati The Vita/PS4 works pretty well. I managed a chunk of my Just Cause 3 and Odin Sphere playthoughs using this.
It's not the best option for brawlers etc but works fine for causal play in most genres.
Re: PC Game Streaming Service Rainway Confirms Switch As A Supported Platform
I'm not as skeptical as I once was now I've seen Nintendo green light cross-platform play for both Minecraft and Rocket League.
This sort of thing will slightly broaden the demographic and I don't really see any software revenue loss realistically.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Some Stats for the ARMS Global Testpunch
I mained Mechanica and hardly ever lost (even then it was always FFA or team fights).
Mechanica's midair dash is the key, I think. I'll be gutted if she gets a knee-jerk reaction nerf.
