It’s been quite a fair bit of time since Nintendo last updated the Nintendo Switch software with *gasp* new features beyond that all-important stability that we simply cannot get enough of in any Nintendo console. Nintendo has heard your cries, and has opted to grace the raving masses with yet another glorious software update that improves upon the OS in a notable way.
Nintendo Switch OS Version 3.0.2 is now available for download and brings with it a rather unexpected but welcome change. Anyone living in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, or Peru will now have access to Nintendo’s online services (at least until the paywall for online goes up at some point in 2018). Prehaps even more importantly, this update is bringing stability not only to those countries, but to all. Nintendo is indeed a generous god, overflowing with a bounty of stability for all to enjoy.
What do you think? Will you be paying for online when it costs you? When do you think Nintendo will add in themes? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

If they don't have access to Nintendo's online services, then how do they download the update? Hmm...
I wonder HOW stable it is now? Sounds pretty stable but is it stable enough? 🤔
@NinjaAceTrainer Nintendo is deploying platoons of Pikmin as we speak
ohh the stability is insane...damnit they need to throw us a cookie at least
Let me guess. Stability? Well it's definitely not something important like Virtual Console or proper Voice Chat.
One little update that can't come soon enough: being able to turn off the console from the main menu instead of pressing the on/off button for an eternity. Or did I miss another way?
If only they stabilized their online play so people wouldn't get disconnected so much in Splatoon ...
More stables for me horses then. Link shall be pleased.
@SanderEvers fair enough.
But I have to work and sleep and I prefer my consoles to be turned off when I'm not using them. Not a big fan of sleep mode when it comes to my gaming devices.
Oh wow, THIS is the update I was waiting for...
:/
...Remember when system updates were exciting?
Yay!
Well if they didn't give us stability updates we'd all be complaining that our Switch keeps falling out of its dock!
I'm just waiting for the stability update that adds another stand to the back of my Switch, that will be the ultimate stability update.
Come on Nintendo, give us a video player already... The Tegra X1 chip has a H.265 hardware decoder that can play HEVC 4K content in 10-bit colours. It can even do VP9 in 4K, that means there's a hardware decoder for Youtube. 🎥
FYI, only the latest Intel Kaby Lake cpu supports these new video standards. Not even PS4/PS4 Pro has hardware h.265 or 10-bit colours support.
WTH. I get the stability joke, but we need themes quick. At least before Mario Odyssey. I can only imagine turning on the Switch to my Zelda or Mario theme bought from My Nintendo. Just like the 3DS. Why Nintendo isn't doing this I don't know. But they better snap out of it quick...
Needs a bit more stability if they want me to pay for the online service. getting there though, more stable than my last relationship. crickets
@Yasaal They will make themes. It's a guarantee. But they'll charge of course. Everything with Nintendo is about money. We should be able to make our own, we've been able to make wallpapers and themes on our phones for well over a decade for free. Nintendo won't allow that though because as I say, money. As with everything Switch, you'll have to wait. They're not ready, just like their online, a browser, apps, VC, etc.
I'm not paying for any online service until I know what the devil it actually entails! What's the hold up? If it's voiceless, Friendless Splatoon 2 battles I'm seriously not paying for it. And where's my SNES and gamecube VC already? I want to give them money to play the gamecube fire emblem on the bus already!
What a tease.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
"Everything with Nintendo is about money."
WHAT?! The horror! When did this happen?! Etc....
@Equinox Or atleast give the option to save to the game card, which is what they should've done in the first place.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nintendo can be right tight bastards compared to the other two can't they.
I'm loosing interest in Nintendo since the Switch came along tbh, I never turn the thing on. So, I won't be updating.....
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
So what ?
Are you expecting Freebies from Nintendo all the time ?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE You're saying a huge multi-national corporation is about money?! What?! Stop the press.
Nintendo only exists to make money. That's how the world works.
Incessantly moaning in every single thread won't turn the company into some kind of non-profit joy provider funded by customer sentiment...
God forbid they'd give a free theme with the purchase of a game. They take little to no effort. I could make one myself if they'd let me.
Holes in the OS were discovered and they are patching them out. People had access to code that let them hack into games and rip the assets from them. If this fixes that problem, I don't see why they get ridiculed for putting out small updates regularly. Yes, there are a lot of things missing they could add but why fault them for fixing immediate problems.
For sure I will not pay any subscription. I don't like online gaming. I don't enjoy that much local multiplayer either, but at least that is fun because I'm with my friends. Single player (strictly offline) is the best thing to enjoy games for me so why should I pay a subscription?
So in other words, nothing for most of us. No doubt themes will come, but there's also no doubt Nintendo won't give any away for free.
@Joeynator3000 its been so long, no , i dont
For those complaining about paying for an online subscription, look at the Sega Dremacast. Apparently Sega charger $20 (estimate) PER MONTH (so that would be $240 for 1 Year). That's crazy.
Nintendo only charging £18 for a online subscription along with free NES games (while the subscription is active) is a lot more reasonable compared to what Sega did.
I'll most likely pay, as games like Puyo Puyo Tetris, Arms, Mario Kart 8 Delux and Splatoon 2 have better online experiences than offline.
@In_Ex_Fan I'm guessing you're going for a full power-down, not rest mode? You can enter rest mode anytime by holding down home and then hitting it in the quick-menu, but full power downs seem to be something Nintendo doesn't count on. It's like your smartphone, it's never really off.
@FTPinkRabbit yeah, exactly. But it appears some people had some issues after their Switch was in rest/sleep mode for longer periods of time. I think it's not too much to ask and probably not a lot of work to implement it.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Busy Busy SLIGEACH_EIRE always here to give a positive comment on you fav subject. I wonder what sort of excitement arises when you see a new article, the endless possibilities of negative comments! What a thrill!
@SanderEvers
I think SD card saves would be great that you could transfer, which should have been there on wii u. Guess the hackers spoilt this for the rest of us.
@otterskateboard Sorry man but i think you might be wrong, in fact i believe that Apple will soon launch a "One free iPhone for every fan" campaign... microsoft and sony will likely do the same with their new consoles, unfortunately this will show the world what kind of greedy monster Nintendo is...
@readyletsgo
@SLIGEACH_EIRE wouldn't know. He refuses to buy them no matter how awful Nintendo are. Themes? Really? My 5-day-old boy whinges less.
However, I know what you mean about Nintendo looking stingy compared to the others. But nothing is for free. Sony didn't Cross Buy all them PS3 and Vita games out of generosity, it was to try and sell Consoles (and ludicrously overpriced Vita Memory Cards). Neither of them offer free game rentals or MS the excellent Backwards Compatibility because they want Christmas all-year round, it's because they want you subscribing to their Online service and scared to leave their ecosystem because of your accrued library.
They're all companies out to make money. If there's anybody out there who thinks they've ever been any different not only do they have a terrible grasp of Nintendo's history but they clearly believe in the tooth fairy and I'd like to sell them some magic beans.
I've asked Netflix to change their brand name to Stability, so we might actually end up with it next time. I'll let you know what they say.
@RadioShadow
That was 17 years ago and I'm pretty sure Sega didn't charge for Seganet apart from Phantasy Star Online
@BustedUpBiker I like your plan 😁
@RadioShadow That isn't true at all. Dreamcast online play was completely free.
@RadioShadow I could be wrong, but I don't ever remember paying to play online with my Dreamcast...?
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Nintendo gives out free themes all the friggin' time. I think I had 15 or 16 on my 3ds at last count, I paid for 1 Mario theme when they first added themes to the system. You complain entirely too much.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE "We should be able to make our own, we've been able to make wallpapers and themes on our phones for well over a decade for free"
Has there ever been a console allowing that unless you CFW it? It took PS4 several years to so much as allow using screenshots as wallpapers (provided you can make a screenshot with a fitting layout to compete with the menu icons for space). The only outside thing to bring in is a profile pic since it's tied to Sony Network account - and even that can be quite tedious to pull off. The phones you speak of are the evolution of palmtop computers with a permanent GSM module - of course they've always allowed more extensive customization as computers generally tend to.
And last time I checked, most themes (and even a lot of profile pics) on PS Store had price tags as well. These are all businesses, and the main reason you don't subscribe to their policies is because you aren't in their shoes. Like I've said before, any of us here would sing a notably different song as a Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft executive themselves.
"God forbid they'd give a free theme with the purchase of a game."
Well, God apparently didn't forbid it since it's happened multiple times. For a limited time per case, yes (to encourage early sales and preorders, obviously), but nonetheless. Again, same policy I've seen on PS Store.

In the "The Ultimate Sega Dreamcast Documentary - Retro Gaming Commonwealth" that Top Hat Gaming Man:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lW-hddqAyc
One person stated he had to pay $20 per month to use the online service on the Sega Dreamcast. Maybe I misunderstood what he was on about, or he was talking about a different issue.
@Equinox is it common for something to happend to your devices/consoles in the first year?
Now more countries can experience the luxury of a stable life. Link is already enjoying his plentiful room for his horses.
I would love to be able to manage file space
@RadioShadow You paid Sega for the online, not to play online, they were your ISP. Nobody had broadband cable modem or DSL, everybody had AOL, Prodigy, Compuserve dial up for $20 per month. You didn't pay to PLAY online, you paid to BE online. Dreamcast shipped with a disc that had a Web browser on it and a phone modem built in, it worked like a PC, it was way ahead of its time. It also had a screen on its controller.

Still waiting for the update to have more game icons on the home screen at once. Something like how they worked it with the 3DS would suit me (for now).
Guys, why are you complaining about the lack of additions? We got stability, for Pete's sake! It's the most important addition we could ask for! I, for one, will be telling the story of when I first heard of this influx of pure stability into the Switch, creating the ingredients for the perfect, most stable system on the market for ages! Soon, it may even pass the 3DS in terms of stability, making it the new god of stability.
I do so enjoy these posts whenever a new OS version goes online. I'm literally crying as I read every single time, the witty writing simply makes my day.
Never change, Nintendolife.
They said I was too unstable for this world and locked me away for 5,000 years. But now, with the Switch' unparalleled stability in my hands, I rise once again.
PLEASE It's COLOMBIA not ColUmbia...
@NinjaAceTrainer I'm Brazilian, so, i can answer your question.
We Brazilians are forced to make an American or Canadian account to be able to buy games, unfortunately we will still need to continue with these accounts, because there is no Brazilian eShop yet. We do not have access to eShop. We only have access to American and Canadian accounts.
Are you paid by Nintendo? Seriously. Your passive aggressiveness about Nintendos complete failure to update the switches capabilities is easy to detect. YouTube, Netflix, or a web browser? VIRTUAL CONSOLE. Still nope. How can you still back Nintendo with that tragedy? If Nintendo has zero plans for the switch to be a true multimedia device they need to just say so instead of stringing us along with high hopes.
Let the stability wash over you like waves in the ocean. Feel the stability strengthen your resolve. Soon we shall reach our most stable form, and Lord Xenu will rise from the ashes to smite our enemies and deliver us to the promised land.
So the Switch is more balance than the worlds economy but not as balance than the king of balance, the 3DS.
Thank you, based Nintendo for all that stability.
Stability!!! I HAVE THE POWER!!!!!
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Well, negative Nancy...would you like some french cries with your whamburger?
@amos_IRL Yes! And folder creation for screenshots so you can organize them by game!
Laugh all you want, but for those in Latin America, this is HUGE! We finally get some official support without having to fake a US address every single time!
@SwitchVogel Mitch, the country is Colombia, not Columbia.
I don't care about other stuff, just get the Virtual Console up and running. Crazy we still don't have it.
Five countries at a time and maybe by 2030 they will finally cover all of Latin America. And it took 60 comments to notice the Colombian misspelling.
@nhSnork
"Has there ever been a console allowing that unless you CFW it?"
Yes, actually. The original PSP did not need custom firmware to use themes, you could make them yourself and they were readily available all over the place. There were official utilities available to create your custom themes. I believe that was also the first console to allow custom UI's.
I believe, much like how they "normalized" paying to play online for consoles, Microsoft was also the first to charge for avatars/themes, and proved it to be a profitable venture. Thereby causing the other console manufacturers to follow suit.
@TrixieSparkle thanks! Both points taken.
But if it was "original PSP", does it mean 2000 and 3000 upgrades abandoned the feature later?
@nhSnork
All PSP models (1000, 2000, 3000, GO) supported the PTF theme files. I just meant free themes were no longer a supported feature on the Vita.
I might as well also note that setting wallpapers was as simple as opening an image and cropping to the desired size, right on the system. It didn't matter where the images came from. The PTF theme files were mostly to change icons.
@In_Ex_Fan to turn it off you just hold the home button and then it'll give you an option to put the switch to sleep mode which means OFF
@JAAcebal that's just sleep mode. You can actually turn it off, if you press the on/off button on top of it for a few seconds. THAT'S what I'm talking about.
Cool, an update bringing us Netflix, web browser, game folder organization, Virtual Console, and the Rhythm Heaven Forever demo
Is there anyone in the world who hasn't been touched by the Switch's stability yet...?
The /s is strong with this one...
@NinjaAceTrainer actually we used to have a secondary account registered in other country (USA, in my case).
Now I can finally play Arms with my own account and already unlocked arms!😁
P.S. I'm from Brazil.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE every company in the world is all about money lol Sony,xbone and Nintendo has been doing ports of the same games we just bought last gen lol we keep buying them lol its all about money
But is it too stable? lol
My Switch is so stable now, my little nephew attached it to the side of his bike!
"I wonder HOW stable it is now? Sounds pretty stable but is it stable enough?"
@Jolt Lets just say that the kickstand of the Nintendo Switch is keeping my room door from blowing open in the wind.
Nintendo really needs to bring Netflix and all the other video services and bring the features up to par with at least the Wii U but preferably up to par with PlayStation and Xbox, they need to do this by the holidays. It would be a great value added selling point.
My sarcasm detector went off while reading that one. Not too sure why.
I wonder what Nintendo's developers are doing all day...
No apps (like Netflix and Youtube).
No browser (despite the fact that there is a hidden one and it still got hacked anyway, so hiding it was pointless).
No cloudsaves.
No crosssaves.
No customizable menu like on Wii U.
But yeah, they made an already stable device more stable. Although no one actually knows how that would be possible.
I hope all this stabilization doesn't become too unwieldy; they my need to stabilize it.
I seriously cannot believe there is no messaging or ways to contact and communicate with friends on the Switch. The Wii U and even the Wii had ways to send messages to people.
please make cloud saves happen, I don't want to lose 20 hours worth of MK8D
When talk about of my Switch's stability, i'm like an insatiable monster, alway want more, more, more.
Tell you what's not stable: the kickstand.
@In_Ex_Fan Makes me a little curious just how much power rest mode actually consumes. I mean, my N3DS can go in sleep mode for what feels like forever, and my phone promises in rest mode it could go just short of a week.
@FTPinkRabbit I think it doesn't consume much power. But that's not why I want that feature. In the case of the Switch it just starts not working properly. And that's probably not that good for the game or the system. So I want to avoid putting it to sleep mode for too long.
When I have to travel off road, I always bring my Switch. The added stability makes the car glide over rocks.
@SanderEvers I don't know they have it implemented pretty much anything in the OS yet, it's still light years behind other systems
Without a doubt Nintendo will be getting a measley $20 bucks a year from me.
[insert kickstand joke here]
@In_Ex_Fan "Not working properly"? How so? A system designed to be perpetually "on" even in rest mode shouldn't have issues arise when the user leaves it resting. If you're experiencing issues like that, I would definitely contact support. Besides, their support is amazing anyways. You could tell them your Switch broke while you were using it to hammer in a fence post and they'd probably still replace it free of charge.
@FTPinkRabbit since I always turn off my Switch, I never encounterd said problems but it is well documented on the internet. If you leave it in sleep mode for longer periods of time, it may start acting up. Things like reacting slowly to input or like someone else replied to me, not getting out of the game anymore.
@In_Ex_Fan Huh. Yeah, that's not normal for the system. If it acts up from regular use like that, no dropping, humidity damage, none of that, then that's a job for their support team. The machine is built to rest, if it can't do its job it'll be replaced.
