Re: You Can Now Buy A Replacement Wii U GamePad On Its Own

CTMike

Makes you wonder why they've not just sold the console less the Gamepad this holiday season. They could patch in support for the few games where it's required (add mini map to Splatoon or button press for full map) and make a very short list of those you simply can't play (Mario Maker).

Half the cost of the console and then you'd likely find a decent chunk of those people picking up the standalone Gamepad later down the line.

I'm musing of course, it's been made abundantly clear they'd never do this...

Re: Super Mario Maker's First Major Update is Now Live

@MasterWario @crimsontadpoles @StarDust4Ever @Kirk @sinalefa Would a couple of people do me a quick favour and play this level: 41EF-0000-0027-743F with the purpose of rating the difficulty?

I'd just like an idea if the completion rate is a reflection of the actual difficulty. This is one I intend to tweak and stick a checkpoint in. Just want to know if needs toning down a bit and it should give me the right sort of idea on how to approach my other levels. Thanks guys

Re: Sega: Recent Sonic Games Haven't Been "Acceptable", Looking To Replicate The Past In Future Outings

CTMike

I'll never understand how people rate Sonic Heroes. Every movement felt sloppy. It's utterly awful in every sense. I really enjoyed SA2 and hoped they would expand on it. Heores killed it then nothing great happened in terms of 3D games until Generations.

Each title has its moments but the bugs are often unbearable and anything any title does well, it only does in bursts.

Where 2D is concerned, I think people are harsh on Sonic 4 Episode 2. Episode 1 was pretty poor but again, 2 has its moments and played fairly well.

What are Sega saying now exactly? That they'll make a Sonic 1/2/3 style game? Isn't that what the attempted with 4? I'd be far happier if they'd follow up Generations with new environments.

The Sonic fanbase is so split, no matter what's released, they aren't going to please everyone.

@TheWindWaker @FLUX_CAPACITOR Alright then round 1) is 'Volcano Escape!'

Let's agree all's fair game for now see how we roll. 3-4 days sounds reasonable, gives us the weekend.

@FLUX_CAPACITOR I love your joke levels and they actually do play well! I'd echo the comments on the asthetic of the water level, too.

@TheWindWaker I haven't had a chance to play your new one yet and won't for about another 13 hours (blame time zones/work) but I'm looking forward to it!

Internal job interview today at work so Mario Maker will be perfect for winding down later tonight!

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@FLUX_CAPACITOR @TheWindWaker I did a little research and apparently you can remove a level but still keep your stars. I'd imagine that means if you delete a level, tweak it, re-upload it, you'll lose the stars for said level but will keep them in your overall count. Still have no idea about levels actually being removed though.

Almost makes me want to make an auto level, nab some stars, delete it, just so I can unlock the upload slots... naaaah not doing that. Hate those levels too much.

I'm happy to keep this mini community going, gives an added purpose to uploading levels and we give much more detailed feedback.

I was going to suggest that maybe we could come up with a theme or a core idea and essentially make a level each all using the same level title just to see how it turns out (e.g. ice cave with wall jumps or only use 5 types of object only etc, but obviously something better than that). More to see how our respective styles comes through. Honestly can't think of anything of the top of my head right but I'll have a think! You guys on board with that?

Re: Sonic Lost World's Wii U Exclusivity Ends With Budget PC Release

CTMike

@WireWare I hope the same. It would be nice to see a spike in sales, then maybe a port to other consoles to show there's still an appetite for decent Sonic Team 3D Sonic games (though I really hope they just release a more polished game using the Generations engine).

Atlus are kicking Sega's general attitude in the right direction, I expect we'll see better results from future console releases.

P.S. I'm blindly optimistic about Sonic and like to pretend nothing happened between SA2 and Generations and mobile games + Sonic Boom don't exist... so probably disregard everything I said.

Re: Video: This Super Mario Maker Player Captures The Frustration of Surprise 'Don't Move' Stages

CTMike

@MoonKnight7 funnyly enough there's an article from a few weeks ago that 3 of us on NL regularly rate and discuss eachother's levels (I'm sure the mods don't mind). It's far more rewarding than waiting for randomers, so if you want to post your codes:

Re: Video: This Super Mario Maker Player Captures The Frustration of Surprise 'Don't Move' Stages

CTMike

@MoonKnight7 This entirely. They were fun for the first couple, now I LOATH the fact that they dominate the highest rated.

I get the impression most people who play 100 Mario only star levels they can beat, meaning lots immediately star auto-levels. Obviously I can't prove that but when looking at a profile you can see which ones people have starred and it seems players just aren't generous with them unless they're YouTubers or auto-levels

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@FLUX_CAPACITOR Thanks a lot! I appreciate the comments.

And yeah, it's all about the fun factor, that's why we play. I don't mind the pixel perfect speedrunner levels: I appreciate them, they do take a lot to design, but they're no good unless you can dedicate lots of time to playing them. They need their own category.

There should also be some kind of voting system for marking troll levels for their own category (not to report them, people seem to like trial & error runs for whatever reason) though the most simple solution for them to implement is, as a lot of people have said, an 'impossible/insane' difficulty level.

@TheWindWaker The star system is really the only 'goal' to achieve given there's no other sort of tangible reward in the game. 100 Mario should be 10 Mario for all but expert level, it's just far too many lives, making the 3 reward lives a waste of time. One thing I did notice is that either some of mine weren't registering or they have 'expired' since. On both your earlier levels I went on to play again in the last few days I noticed they were allowing me to star them, yet I blatantly already had done so (showed the completed flag and some even had my comments on- there's simply no way I didn't star them). Have you guys noticed this? Have you gained extra/lost any due to this?

I, too, tried to make some easier levels but it's annoying that we're forced to consider that angle just to avoid them being dumped in the 'hard' category. Of course the other resolution to a lot of these problems is CHECKPOINTS. Daft omission.

And guys, honestly both your level designs are great and I have you both 'followed' on SMM to await your next creations. My son likes them too, though finds most of them too tricky to fInish haha.

Our next level should be ready later so I will post the code on here.

For my next next level I may do a coin collecting challenge but stick to straight-forward Mario platforming styles.

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@FLUX_CAPACITOR Expert is awful. The best levels either need to be searched for or found on Normal difficulty. I find 100 Mario on Normal to be generally 50/50. At the very least the levels tend to be thought out. I tend to give a star if the effort's there and it's at least moderately fun.

What's also irritating is how very few people seem to bother giving any stars out at all. Sometimes I check the profiles of people who have beat my levels and have a look at their levels but what I realised is; you can check which levels said person has starred. The amount of people I've seen with about 2-3 stars given out max is astonishing, and they always seem to be for those damn auto-levels!

Annnnnyways, your Forest level is really cool, definitely hit that throwback to Forest of Illusion feel you were after. It was kinda trippy and you really nailed the aesthetic!

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@TheWindWaker Oh wow! Think that may be your best yet. Loved what you did with that mountainy/tunnel section. Really impressive sense of scale to it once you're inside too. Awesome level. I like the little back story stuff too, keep up the good work!

I'm not quite sure what to do with my next level. Me and my son are putting one up in the next few days which we're halfway through but after that I only have 1 upload slot left so I need to make it a good one!

Re: Star Fox Zero Delayed To Achieve a "Platinum Feel" in Quality

CTMike

@Yorumi Yeah seems true of this game. I was making a wider point about more people talking about framerates recently.

60FPS is impressive for this round of consoles IF the graphics are half decent. Star Fox is blatantly suffering from major cutbacks in all respects due to the Gamepad. Couldn't agree more on that front

Re: Star Fox Zero Delayed To Achieve a "Platinum Feel" in Quality

CTMike

@Yorumi Fast paced action games with a busy screen benefit a LOT from running at 60FPS. It makes the world of difference. Bayonetta is the most obvious recent example.

MK8 don't feel as fluid in 4 player split-screen in a control sense, despite the fact that it's identical, bar framerate. I'm not saying it makes a game but it certainly makes them FEEL better.

Having said that, a locked framerate is far more important. I'd take a solid 30 over a stuttery 30-60.

The Dreamcast is the best example of having solid framerates on a console before it was the norm and my god did it make a difference. Play Soul Blade then Caliber for example.

So yes, people are allowed to care about framerate, just depends on the type of game for how important it is.

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@TheWindWaker Thanks! I put a lot of thought into the layout of that one. Thought my first couple of levels were a bit too difficult so I've tried to tone it down a bit.

A couple of my newest ones are complete gimmick stages, not sure how they will go down. One is a take on basketball, the other a Yoshi feeding high score run.

I'm thinking of doing a take on a Sonic level next but might be a little ambitious...

Re: Video: Admire the Skills on Show as an Insane Super Mario Maker Level is Conquered

CTMike

@SavoirFaire This.

The highest difficulty setting ranges from fairly difficult to borderline impossible. They really need to patch a higher difficulty setting in.

The above level is brilliant and the run ridiculously impressive, but seriously, beyond people with a LOT of time and the speed runners, who's going to care for this?

@LinkSword I tried to make a level with secret paths and rewards but, judging by the completion rate perhaps it's a little too tricky? Would you mind having a blast? ID: 41EF-0000-0027-743F

Re: Reminder: Grab Some Popcorn For Nintendo UK's Super Mario Maker Twitch Stream With An Extra Special Guest

CTMike

@FLUX_CAPACITOR haha you're making it sound weird! But yeah, cheers.

In fairness Bowser Ate My Castle and Bowser Tag are actually my son's levels, Bowser Jr level is a joint effort between me and my wife and the rest are mine.

I'm keeping an eye out for everyone's level on here. The NL MM section is cool but it's suffering from flooding, more so than I thought it would
