@maceng do explain what isn't blatant about the commercialism in the leagues of apps charging on the Play Store for services linking to (or claiming to link to) Pokemon Go's services.
Niantic have all the millions they need to up their game, their servers and to employ more people to put out the updates they are promising faster but they absolutely should not pander to those piggybacking on their success, utilising their licenced IP to make money.
@Dpishere as a side note; it's interesting that the new Deus Ex is avoiding an open world style in favour of dense and narrative driven areas. Many wanted to see them go open world so the decision is admirable.
I honestly don't understand why Go is linked to that dead body incident. The app's link is worth a footnote at best. The app is not to blame for a crime.
Server issues seem largely fixed. Clearly plenty of people here in the UK are already playing it as every gym I've passed has been occupied by a team already.
Honestly, for all it's flaws, it's far more fun in practice than theory.
@gatorboi352 I wouldn't be surprised but if Nintendo sort the control scheme out (physical mobile controls via their own licenced attachment) and can manage to sell full priced games on the back of it, then it wouldn't be so bad.
The real worry with that happening is that we get these 'apps' and microtransactions rather than proper games. That would really suck.
Having played a little bit I'm surprised that I'm into it, even the silly simplistic catching/finding method. It all feels very basic, bare-bones and unpolished but at the same time... it's kinda cool.
If the momentum kept up, could anyome make an educated guess as to how long would it take them to be profitable? Just out of interest. If memory serves, the budget was 30 mil, right? I guess that was development and not marketing/network costs.
@keatonhj no, no, guesswork, it wasn't supposed to be factual- no one knows. BUT I firmly believe that, unless the hardware idea is somewhere near Wii-level innovative and clicks for a solid launch we'll see the same third parties pull out early. And I was talking about exclusives.
You're really willing to bet me that there will be third party exclusives at launch?
The point remains that I believe it really will be something great, I have faith.
I'd imagine something along the lines of a Zelda animated movie with a decent budget would break even on the name alone.
Of course there'd be endless debates on implementation whichever route they took but, as for other IP, I don't know if they have the legs for a full movie success.
We've all chimed in on things like Metroid probably making a decent movie but I think anything outside Mario and Zelda would have to be really special to be of use to Nintendo in leveraging IP and bringing in new fans.
Edit: I'm referring to huge budget Hollywood level movies.
Caution over NX is probably a given but, until we get the NX reveal and know exactly what unique feature it has to offer, it's too hard to call.
Ubisoft and the rest have no plans help Nintendo get the NX off the ground. If there's any lauch support, I doubt there will be third party exclusives. If the launch is handled well though, there may be hope for it.
It's a difficult call really, I mean magazine and gaming sites can post screenshots and commentary on games fairly freely, this doesn't seem much more than the average piece of online journalism.
On the other hand, it's a different game when it comes to retail books. You'd like to think Nintendo would want something like this out, it can mean nothing but good PR for them. But of course, it is making money off another's artwork so fairest way would be a small cut of the profit, surely?
We all know how their legal ninjas work though. Hopefully they will be able to straighten a deal out prior to a C&D.
Edit: Also, as @FX102A rightly points out, there is issue of having to be constantly, and aggressively, protecting IP just to make a point in legal terms.
I wish the guy well and hope his redundancy pay is decent but I am so glad I don't have to listen to any more of his damn buzz-word-littered, uninformative, market drivel.
Fallout 4 proved that voicing the main character can suck. Some of the options were fine but when you hear the delivery, you end up disagreeing with your own decisions.
His sarcasm was not remotely sarcasitc -that didn't help.
What gets me with the relative popularity of the IP in the West is that I really believe it's one of those games that if more people had actually played it, they'd be into it. On Layton: I could easily see it tapping into 2/3 of that market if people would give it the time (guess that's what the crossover aimed for), but that had an easier to stomach Level 5/DS puzzle charm to it that struck a chord with the mainstream.
It's just very hard to market the genre, I guess. How you going to convince everyone to play a few hours before juding? It's a crying shame for what is one of my fave IPs in video gaming to date.
I'm not saying it's for everyone but I am saying it's for more people than the sales suggest.
Nice interview. I just last night went to this really cool arcade in Bury, UK. It was truly like going back in time in an extremely good way. So happy that there is still a passion for this stuff, even if it's uber niche.
@TheDavyStar don't get me wrong, my son and daughter LOVE Nintendo stuff, especially my son but he's a minority. There was a bit of interest when the Splatoon marketing campaign popped up but beyond that he says none of his friends/peers care at all.
And their love of the games is due to exposure, not Nintendo's marketing (that's useless, as we all know).
@zool unless they could adopt a mobile phone level of contract (which would have to be a lot cheaper than phone contracts given that you don't actually get the phone capabilities and network perks), this would not be viable.
Instead, if they were to employ this model, they should opt to provide the hardware 'free' while subscribing to their network, for a minimum period of 24 months or something.
I can't see the mass market going for it though, as it would draw too much of phone comparison.
@ennan oh damn, that didn't even cross my mind: why not hold DLC on carts rather than console storage?! That's a great idea. Capacity would not be an issue and it could help preservation.
If the 32GB aspect is true though, that seems a little small for some modern home console games. Having said that, it will have the capacity to read more and 32GB carts could just the base standard - could easily double (or treble/quadruple it) for big games.
Handheld or not, I'm totally on-board and hope it's true. My PS1/PS2 games have not faired well over the years...
@XCWarrior These questions are entertaining. Please provide more.
Seriously though, investors and the stock market in general is just pure evil. People buy out companies, then loan money from companies they already own, then make money from dividends and interest etc stuff like that. And politicians let it happen (because they're involved). Fun fun fun.
But yeah, I expect we'll get a few decent snippets of info from this meeting.

Re: Poll: Which Nintendo NX Games Do You Want to See in the Launch Window?
How about remake of Bravely Default and Bravely Second as a single release? They're better than most of the FF mainline entries!
Let's also have the next Animal Crossing and I'm hoping for Dragon Quest 11, which was near enough confirmed (though not necessarily for launch).

It makes lunchtime walks faaaar more interesting. Hopefully a Johto update isn't too far off.
Re: Gallery: Let This Awesome Nintendo NX Mock-Up Excite You
@XandBosch in general looks perhaps but as an avid JRPG gamer and Vita owner and I can tell you: that thing is DAMN uncomfortable for long sessions.

@Kirk then the servers will go down haha

That said it may suck, it's not out yet.

That is a truly great response. There's no way you'd get that tone from he police here.

@retro_player_22 haha like every New 3DS owner gets one go and one go only! I like it.
Thinking back, my 3DS XL didn't come with one. Think that was a Europe thing.

The Layton movie's a great family movie.
Not quite sure why they won't offer it on the Wii U though. Should be cross-buy for both. The Pikmin shorts should have been, too.

Re: Video: Here's Why Getting Your Retro Games Graded Could Be A Complete Waste Of Money
Money grabing farce that can only be bad for gaming in my humble opinion.
Games should be played and retro games collections are for getting friends/family round and enjoying them with wonky nostalgia goggles.

@Tetroy64 I think that article was a counter article to another article posted before it.
They went community consensus not too long ago, if I remember correctly.

Fire Emblem anime. Make it happen.

Next update Nintendo are physically going to post a pair of bike stabalisers. You'll need one of those misshapen screwdrivers.
Only for New 3DS.

Backed it early on. Very excited, especially at the prospect of co-op
Re: Nintendo Confirms Its E3 Plans for The Legend of Zelda
I have a hope that this is going to be a huge pre-intro demo that's available post-show.
If not, I don't really want to see much of it for spoilers. Might watch a couple of hours, no more.
Also the Digital Event/Direct a no show? Seems mental to not even plug the new Pokemon. Maybe they'll stage a direct immediately before or after.

Re: Three New Titles Have Been Added to the Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle
Truly incredible. I've wanted a few of these games for a while, the rest I will certainly give a go now. Great deal, great cause.
Re: Humble Friends of Nintendo Bundle Passes $1 Million and 100,000 Bundles Sold
@dkxcalibur argh, really? I didn't notice a slider. Is it too late to go back? I love Nintendo but they really don't need the lionshare of this
Re: Limited Run Games Would Like to Distribute Physical Copies of Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies
I'd drop £30 on AA
Re: Fire Emblem and Animal Crossing Franchises Are Heading to Smart Devices
I'm more than happy to give Fire Emblem mobile the time of day. If a genre can work without being marred by touch screens it's probably SRPG.
As for Animal Crossing, I called that!
Re: Rumour: Nintendo is Gearing Up to Unveil its Next Smart Device Software Soon
WarioWare sounds like the best idea but I think Animal Crossing or Mario Kart are more likely.
