@Fuz I see your point, but I’m not sure this was the best way to go about it. NL’s freelancers don’t always do a lot of reviews, so it’s hard to get to know individuals’ tastes (except in a few rare cases). You end up having to trust the reviewers to reflect some kind of NL consensus.
Furthermore, I remember reading the texts and coming away thinking I’d read about two completely different games. Review 2 never mentioned review 1! I’d expect them to have read the first piece at the very least.
Having a ‘second opinion’ segment in a given review might work better. I certainly think Psychic Spectres could have done with that, given the discrepancies in score and tone.
I am in theory. However I remember Nintendo Life’s reviews of YKW2 being really confusing, with two different reviewers giving the game 6/10 (calling it tedious) and 9/10 (calling it... generally great) to the point where I couldn’t work out whether the wandering was an actual problem. I ended up not buying it. Hopefully I can get a clearer idea about the merits of this one!
Came to the comments looking for absolute nonsense masquerading as political opinions. Was not disappointed.
(I’m not saying from whom, I’m not discussing politics on Nintendo Life apart from with my tongue coiled up inside my cheek... but if you’re angry at this comment then it’s probably you.)
@Darlinfan Second post in the thread sir! And then the ensuing conversation. Mizuguchi was the man behind them both, hence the link. Although on further research @Joeynator3000 isn’t wrong: Sakurai was the designer, Mizuguchi was the producer.
If buying this means a chance at getting Meteos on Switch then I will buy three copies. Don’t know much about the game itself, but Meteos (a DS puzzler from the same man) was gold.
I was thinking Ever Oasis as much as anything else! Whatever genre mash-up it is, it looks intriguing, but I’m wary about assuming that early-days Kickstarter builds are at all representative of the final game...
I want Smash 5, Metroid Prime 4, Mother 4, Bayonetta 3&4, Pokémon Umber/Ochre, KIU2, and Mario Odyssey 2 to be announced in this Direct three months before E3, and will consider myself justified in sending Nintendo death threats if these aren’t all announced. I think that’s reasonable.
Count me in as somebody else who’d be keen, so long as it’s kept humorous. For me, where podcasts live and die is on the chemistry and back-and-forth between the casters. Although Alex might be able to provide that on his own, who knows...
Humble suggestion: if you are annoyed by people slagging off the Switch for being a portmachine (and some clearly are), don’t respond to them. Especially people whose usernames and post history suggest they’re just in it to seek attention.
And so this post is worth a damn: I think it’s great people are getting to play this. Of all the generational leaps out there, I’m gladdest to see ports from the Wii U to the Switch, because the obvious popularity disparity means the biggest new audience. Bayo and its sequel ain’t for me, the genre’s just not my thing, but everybody else who hasn’t played them already (and surely some who have) should probably pick up the version they can play on the go.
@MFD I was the only person who mentioned ‘that meme stuff’, including the article, on this page. I’d say that’s pretty direct! If not aimed at me then fair enough, but I think it’s fair to say it looked that way.
Although for what it’s worth I found it funny before I knew it was a meme. /hipster
@Jacob1092 I spent probably too long wondering whether that comment needed a disclaimer or not... bloomin’ Internet. This may be controversial, but I think it’s fairly reasonable that a review of a game based around Brexit mentions Brexit.
I’m disgusted by all the politics in this review. Can’t we just concentrate on nice videogames, instead of having all this whinging leftie propaganda shoved down our throats? God.
I’m going to buck the trend, apparently, by saying that I enjoyed the video. I’ll admit, I found some of Alex’s arguments lacking (I agree with the recyclability argument against plastic, but the storage one felt a bit straw-clutchy), but likewise with some of the comments! Opinions exist to be challenged, and that’s what Alex is doing, just as those who rail against his video are.
As for the grammar point, the only one that seemed to be seriously mocked was the utterly incomprehensible one. That’s not dyslexia, that’s poor communication. If you’re going to communicate in a written medium, I don’t think it’s too much to ask that your writing is baseline comprehensible.
@gcunit Something to note, perhaps, is that I know a fair few people who loved the original but didn't get on with, or borderline loathed, XCX. I can see why: they tried to make it into a bit of an MMO, and in doing so lost some of the single-player focus. The main quest was downright poor at times. Monolith seems to be acknowledging that by making this '2', effectively relegating X to a spin-off.
I haven't played this game, natch, but it sounds like it's back to the joys of the original. In which case, if XCX doesn't turn out to be your thing, but XC1 was, don't let that stop you from picking this up!
I probably won’t be getting this until Christmas, but this was a great review. Conveying some sense of the game’s awe. Amusing as well as informative. Number well justified in text. Putting paid to rest some of the concerns of a Nintendo gamer whose only open-world title has been BotW. Thank you Mr. Driver, I needed this. Still slightly nervy that what little it does better than BotW I won’t care for, but I’m looking forward to finding out either way.
I recall when Nintendo used to let EA use their players for cameos in their sports games. I’d buy a Switch version in a heartbeat if it included Mario swinging his bat at Bowser’s flaming inswinging yorker. Mind the windows!
This is... curious. The original Yo-Kai Watch 2 pairing got a 6/10. The reviewer talked about how tedious they were, how long the journeys took. The level of busywork he described encouraged me to stay away. This doesn’t seemed to have changed huge amounts, and is awarded a 9 and glowing praise.
I know, I know, different reviewers, but I’m struggling to link the two. Did the reviewer of Psychic Spectres play the original two? What did he think? Would be helpful to know.
Am I the only one who found the trailer unwatchable? The droning delivery of the voiceover man killed it dead for me. 'We needed a bounty hunter; we got a legend' is the cheesiest line since I accidentally mixed Parmesan and cocaine. The game looks good, but goodness me do I not like the way they've chosen to show it off.
This feels dishonest as all heck. Should be clearly and separately marked as a paid-for advert. If it's not, well, the person responsible really needs to change their writing tone. This is disappointing coming from my current favourite Nintendo news site, and I hope against hope it's a one-off.
More of this sort of thing! I miss this. I used to read print Nintendo mags in the U.K., and ever since they went under I've missed the humour pieces more than anything else. Any site can report on a story: it takes talent to make people laugh with it.
Keep it up please! And those people going 'slow news day' perhaps should have kept their distance when they saw the title. I'm... hoping nobody thought it was genuine...
As few known games as possible, beyond the absolute blinders. They need at least two big big surprises over and above the Rabbids nonsense, in my 'umble opinion, to make the Spotlight a success. Like every year really, only they've given themselves less time to do it in.
...really? Sure it's not just nostalgia? The great thing about the ARMS tune is its instrumentation, with its whistles and its vocals. It makes it sound like a big sporting event. Take those away and you have just another chiptune, slightly catchier than most maybe, but not as good nor as catchy than the original in my opinion.
Music's famously subjective, natch... which is why this headline seems a bit silly uncaveated. Unless it's clickbaitish in design, in which case - I clicked? Well played I suppose?
I downloaded it from the eShop personally, out of sheer laziness - don't think those figures are counted, are they? Anyway, it's good fun, although I've seen a lot of it before.

@SmaggTheSmug Agreed. The original had a minimalist charm that they’ve entirely butchered here. A shame.
