Re: Memory Pak: Playing Through Ghost Trick For The First Time

Balladeer

For everyone saying how sad they are that they can't experience the game again, it's still very much worth replaying, especially if you leave it a long time between playthroughs. That's what I did last year, having not touched it since launch. Obviously not the same experience, probably not quite as magical; but going through it again, seeing how THAT twist is subtly seeded throughout, wondering how they could possibly tie up all the loose ends and being amazed again... that was still intact for me. The replay cemented this as one of my top five games of all time - up there with Thousand-Year Door incidentally.

I personally can't believe it's taken until the second one of these for people to scream 'IT'S NOT FUNNY' and throw their toys around. I love these - a real throwback to the magazines of yesteryear, when making the reader laugh took equal billing with reporting the news. Humour's subjective, and they won't all land with me or with anyone. I'm just glad they're happening. Bravo @kategray !

Re: Review: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game - Complete Edition - Still The Bob-omb 10 Years On

Balladeer

It’s such a shame. I was delighted when this got announced, having never played it on other platforms before its untimely culling. It looked great and was spoken of highly. I was all the way up for it.

Then UbiSoft’s sexual assault-supporting culture crawled out of the woodwork, and its CEO failed to apologise in a meaningful way, take any proper action, or resign. It’s a hard pass and a sigh on this one, sadly.

Re: Poll: Pokémon Sword And Shield Launched A Year Ago, Has Your Opinion On Them Changed?

Balladeer

People made such a fuss about ‘Dexit’ that I was convinced that for those who don’t care about the National Dex storm-in-a-Sinistea these games would still be top-notch. However they did feel rushed and low-effort in places, and due to the low stakes of the DLC that felt even worse. I’d say my disappointment has increased over time, sadly.

Still, looking back at older gens., Game Freak have tended to screw the Yamper a little with the first game in every console generation, and improve on the subsequent one. I have higher hopes for the next Switch Pokémon instalments.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Publicly Apologises For Misconduct Allegations

Balladeer

It’s a start. It was also intentionally generic, put out before UbiForward so that it would get pushed down by tweets about UbiForward itself, and their excuse for not including in UbiForward proper was ridiculous; so it’s not a very good start. Much more to be done here, and it doesn’t help that this is the first sites like this one have reported on it at all.

Re: Magical Puzzle-Platformer Ageless Launches Today On Nintendo Switch

Balladeer

Some comments disparaging the pixel art style here (and, er, criticising roguelikes? I don’t like them either, but this seems like an odd place to beat that particular drum given that this game, y’know, isn’t). While I’m not the biggest fan, I also appreciate that indie developers have to pick and choose where to exercise their more limited budgets. Hopefully less spent on art = more spent on gameplay and level design? Might be a worthwhile trade-off.

My concern is that the main character looks a little... lightweight. Despite it using an art style similar to Celeste, Madeline felt great to control and had a real weight to her, and I can’t see the same in the trailer. I’m curious about that review.

Re: More Than 200 Old Pokémon Are Being Added To Sword And Shield's National Dex

Balladeer

In what will no doubt be the most popular comment in the section, I liked Dexit. There are too many of the bloody things wandering around now. I’m by no means a big Gen. One fanboy (3’s my favourite, 7 second), but having almost a thousand monsters makes any attempt at balancing battling impossible, power creep inevitable and finishing a Pokédex ridiculous unless you bought the previous games on a console you may not own. 400 was a reasonable number, in the knowledge that future games would see the return of some of the other oldies.

There were other problems with Sword and Shield, but I don’t suppose updates will patch in voice acting and decent dungeon design, will they? No, instead we’ll get everyone’s favourite Pokémon Nidorino back. Hooraaaaaay.

(Please note my favourite monster, how it didn’t make it into Sword/Shield, and how I don’t care.)

Re: Review: Pokémon Sword And Shield - A Solid Start To Gen 8 On Switch, Despite The Hate

Balladeer

Looking at Twitter (urgh), this is going to be one hell of a balancing act... Thanks for penning this Alex, it can’t have been easy. Personally I worry that people, and feedback, are going to be so focussed around Dexit (which could be considered pretty reasonable considering how many of the bloody things there are now) that they look over other technical and structural issues with the series that arguably should have been fixed in the transition to Big Boy Machines. Ho hum.

Thanks again for writing this, Alex; and good luck with the comments section...

Re: Blizzard Cancels Overwatch Switch Launch Event, Leaves Nintendo To Apologise On Its Behalf

Balladeer

@CTmatic On the contrary, people like you and me are the people who can control these real-world things. We’re the people who give Blizzard et al. the only thing they care about: money. Not only that, we can spread messages to boycott them, inform our less informed friends, and work towards making it socially unacceptable to purchase Blizzard products. That’s the way one person making a decision becomes ten people becomes something that Blizzard has to start caring about.

I’m not going to tell you or anyone else to push out of your comfort zone to make a stand - I’m hardly one to moralise, Nintendo works with Tencent and I buy Nintendo goods. I’m just saying that we’re exactly the sort of people who can make a difference. If we choose not to then that’s on us.

Re: Untitled Goose Game Developer Reveals The Cheeky Name They Almost Used

Balladeer

So... not many people willing to consider the whole ‘quality over quantity’ thing then? This entertained me more than several full price games. There are entire 60h JRPGs I’ve regretted buying more than this, had fewer moments of genuine fun in than this.

Value for money is definitely a thing, but this is GotY material at (almost) any price. Those citing length alone as a reason for not buying are missing out on an experience that is definitely worth £4 an hour.

Re: Random: Yoshi's Woolly World Composer Keeps Sharing Negative Tweets About Crafted World's Soundtrack

Balladeer

It’s not only the repeated song, although that’s a big offender. It’s also the instrumentation. There are copious uses of slightly out-of-tune recorder that really grate on the ears. A couple of levels use what sound like the main theme played on clown horns, ignoring the fact that clown horns sound like somebody tried and failed to make flatulence musical. And I actually had to mute the game whenever I played the costume gachapon machines.

I liked Yoshi’s Crafted World overall! I think it’s a good game with great moments. But the soundtrack is bobbins.

Re: Hands On: Getting Arty In Yoshi's Crafted World On Nintendo Switch

Balladeer

As a 29-year-old kid who played the demo., I can confirm that only kids will enjoy this game. The title screen on its own had me grinning from ear-to-ear, and the level was (slow and easy but) full of charm, more so even than Woolly World. It turned me from a sceptic into a day-one buyer.

If, on the other hand, you’ve lost touch with your inner child and are dead inside, then I agree that you should play something with more war atrocities in.

Re: Some Players Are Experiencing Corrupted Save Files After Using Piranha Plant In All-Star Mode

Balladeer

@DannyBoi I think the default setting auto-updates the save with the game. So the cloud goes, ‘I see you’ve got rid of everything from your save file, I’ll just take... that...’ Not strictly a deletion, just an update you (really really) don’t want!

That said I’m by no means an expert, I’ve not used the cloud saves to date. I’d check the Twitter comments left by the lady in the article above, who did have a cloud backup and still lost it all.
