Re: Anniversary: 10 Years After His Passing, Satoru Iwata's Thoughts Are More Relevant Than Ever

Balladeer

Iwata the innovator. No way we get the Switch without him. No way we get the incremental Switch 2 with him, I reckon. And while I have no problem with that approach at this point, I can't help but worry that we might see similarly incremental Switch 3, Switch 4 etc. down the road. Dull uninspiring hardware. Iwata would never have done that, and while his Nintendo may not always have been successful it was never dull.

He remains deeply missed.

Re: Review: Beyond Good & Evil: 20th Anniversary Edition (Switch) - Beyond Good, Still

Balladeer

Decent price, until you remember that's still $20 going to UbiSoft. The absolute nadir of gaming companies, following Activision's absorption. We never did get an actual apology from Yves about the whole sex assault culture thing because of course we didn't.

Oh and this is the most positive assessment of BG&E's stealth mechanics I've seen, in that Ollie doesn't mention them at all.

Re: Poll: Is $60 Too Much For Nintendo's Switch Re-Releases?

Balladeer

I don't like the way these questions have been arranged I'm afraid. I'd vote for 'depends but sounds too high' and 'a cult favourite last released on GameCube and with significant overhauls to visuals and soundtrack should be treated differently to a mainstream 3DS rerelease' if I could.

Re: Ubisoft CEO Apologises For Internal Comments After Weak Software Sales

Balladeer

"I heard your feedback and I’m sorry this was perceived that way."

That's not an apology. Just like the non-apology for a culture of sexual abuse, which is also the fault of the higher-ups rather than the lower-level staff, which is apparently still a problem within the company, and which was a big reason I didn't buy the game.

Want to show you're genuinely sorry? Resign.

Re: Soapbox: Mother 3 Isn't Sad, It's Hopeful

Balladeer

@Pupuplatter
"tired of hearing about this game"
"12 people want a remake"

Something about this doesn't add up, does it? It's not the same 12 people every time.

Just skip the articles if you don't care for the game, and let the rest of us enjoy them. There are games people go on about more and with less justification than this.

Re: Devs Speak Out Against Crunch Culture At LEGO Star Wars Developer TT Games

Balladeer

Great piece @kategray, about a subject that needs more airtime precisely because it's so commonplace. As somebody once said, 'Crunch isn't a triumph of the workforce, it's a failure of the management.'

I can't help thinking that if people got as angry about crunch as they do about news articles about crunch, we'd have better working conditions already.

Re: NEO: The World Ends With You Has 'Underperformed Expectations', Square Enix Says

Balladeer

At least one comment on here has already touched on one problem with the game: NEO The World Ends With You is a completely different game to the DS original, not a port or a remaster. But there's also a port/remaster that wasn't very good. NEO TWEWY had completely different controls and was very good. Definitely a touch of the Wii Us with the messaging.

It's a shame: as someone who liked but didn't love the original TWEWY, NEO TWEWY is my game of the year by a distance. If you like the original or JRPGs in general, it's a must-buy. It deserved better.

Re: Soapbox: Why Apollo Justice Might Be The Best Ace Attorney Game

Balladeer

It may well be that how you feel about Apollo Justice depends entirely on how you feel about Klavier Gavin. To me, he's an arrogant berk who has nothing approaching a character arc, and never feels like he gets his comeuppance unlike most of the other prosecutors you square off against; and to me, Apollo Justice is the worst game in the series.

...yes I am a straight man, why do you ask?

Re: Soapbox: Indies Lead The Way But Nintendo Shows Progress Representing People Of Colour

Balladeer

Great piece.

Underneath the Super Metroid Right to Exist article, I posted the following (part of a) comment: "...It would be great to read something similar from the point of view of a black journalist, say, given that non-Asian non-white minority representation appears to have been historically lousy in Japanese games, including Nintendo's. Whether the staff want to moderate the comments on such an article is of course another matter..."

I didn't realise it'd come about so soon. Good to see. I hope, but don't expect, that the comments are more respectful this time about where the writer's coming from. And that nobody 'confuses' respect for other cultures with communism or something equally daft.

Re: Soapbox: Super Metroid Showed Me I Had The Right To Exist

Balladeer

As a bog-standard whitestraightcismale (ooft), I enjoyed reading this article. It's a viewpoint I absolutely can't relate to, natch, since I've had the human main characters for most games I've played straight in my wheelhouse. That's what makes it interesting: to learn about the experiences of others that I wouldn't have got right myself. I've always considered Chun-Li, for example, to be one of the better female characters in early gaming, so that was a bit of a wake-up call (granted I've never played a Street Fighter).

It's also really heartening to see Nintendo Life (which still has a majority-male staff turnout) happy to post these stories from different experiences, along with articles such as Kate's LGBTGIA+ games list from a few days ago. It would be great to read something similar from the point of view of a black journalist, say, given that non-Asian non-white minority representation appears to have been historically lousy in Japanese games, including Nintendo's. Whether the staff want to moderate the comments on such an article is of course another matter...

Re: Hands On: It's Time To Judge The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

Balladeer

Ooft, more balanced than I was expecting/hoping. Still, as long as it's not Spirit of Justice Case 4 Two: Rakugo Boogaloo, I'm sure my love of the series will get me through any slight cultural stumbles.

Also something something how dare they something glorious empire something something cricket something.

Re: Rumour: Major Ubisoft Switch Exclusive Could Make An E3 Appearance

Balladeer

I found the previous Mario + Rabbids a bit too technical for my simple brain. Liked the aesthetics, but found the actual strategy a bit tough to get my head around and not so fun. Will give this a miss I think.

Also since the first game UbiSoft and Yves have failed to do anything meaningful about the sexual assault accusations, so there's that.
