@TG16_IS_BAE "that guy" ripped off Nintendo by using Nintendo's IP. If he used his own characters or those in the public domain, that game would still exist. He was using an IP owned by another entity for easy attention. Any IP owner has every right to protect their IP.
"Oh hey, let's mix battle royale genre with X franchise" is not an original idea, and there is no evidence suggesting Nintendo "stole" the idea from someone else as these things take time to develop.
@MrMetroid there really is no need to make changes or additions. Most remasters are done when nostalgia outweighs quality by modern standards. These games hold up extremely well. Galaxy may be a true timeless game.
Should probably mention remapping is possible in the Switch options. It's fairly hidden and relatively unknown, but it is an option. With mapping profiles, there isn't really much need for in-game remapping.
There's taking inspiration, then there's cloning. This seems to be closer to the latter. I'll give it one yike for now, the rest of the yikes will wait for reviews.
Thought it was solid. Story was told in an interesting way IMO. Gameplay could be a little disorienting, but that's fairly typical of any game that gives full 3 dimensional control.
@Richnj I never said or implied Nintendo does not care about quarterly or annual reports. I stated factually that they (and a number of other Japanese devs) also consider the long game to a much higher degree than western developers. The world is not binary like your posts imply.
Yes, Nintendo limits their product availability to keep prices up. That's exactly what I'm saying. This is a sound business strategy, and because it is an entirely optional product, you cannot make moral claims about it. You won't see sales of major Nintendo releases on its current platform of 75% or 95% at any point, unlike in the west, where overworked developers release unfinished games as a standard practice. VC titles trickled out very slowly. Many Amiibo were under-produced. This has the long term effect of keeping their products more valuable and in higher demand than the competition and allows them to offer more distilled gameplay experiences without a huge volume of lootboxes and microtransactions.
Quit assuming everything is binary. A probable Zelda event is a factor, not the entire reason.
@Richnj No, I did not say they do not care about quarterly reports, but this is how Nintendo has done business for 20+ years. They do not saturate the market with their products, they do not re-release them frequently or quickly, and they keep the price and interest up for the future as a result.
Just before these Mario events end, another major Nintendo franchise turns 35. These plans have probably been in place predating the pandemic by a year or two.
Sale wars happen on every platform, not just the eShop. Ever use Steam before?
Nintendo (and several other Japanese devs) play the long game while western devs play the quarterly report game. The strategy is exactly as I describe it. Keep product and IP value high to capitalize on re-releases for years or decades. This is exactly the purpose of the limited release window.
@RenanKJ A common "problem" in game development is devaluation of a company's product. You'll often see sale wars or free giveaways of many games in an attempt at increasing visibility, but the result is lowered revenue for your product... unless you use micro transactions or lootboxes to supplement it. You'll notice Nintendo never "devalues" their product and subsequently offers games with limited or free DLC.
Making this limited time prevents these past entries from being "devalued" in that way despite it being a collection for the price of one.
@status-204 This is an example of how it SHOULD be done.
Someone does something that offends, intentionally or otherwise. The offended asks to be treated better. The offender learns something, apologizes, alters their behavior to be more considerate. The offended accepts the apology.
If all of this is done in good faith, it is an ideal interaction.
"Political correctness" is just being polite. It's that simple.
@ancientlii Typically, animated models need to be remade or heavily edited and reanimated anytime the hardware changes. Depending on the scenario, this can take as long or longer than simply starting from scratch.
Sword/Shield's models and animations look nearly identical to 3ds (though light/texture maps are dramatically improved) but that does not mean they didn't start over with them. They simply remade them to be the same as before. This takes a great deal of time. A direct import from 3DS without modifications would look glitchy or nonsensical.
Each one being totally unique is the key here. No other game does that. Animations and textures are frequently recycled for multiple models within most games or even across multiple games for larger businesses, but not for Pokemon. The time investment is colossal, and quite a large number of game devs came out in support of Game Freak because of the sheer volume of work they needed to do to bring the 400 over that they did initially.
Keep in mind Wii was designed to be backwards compatible with GameCube, and transferring models very well may have been a lot easier because of it. Before that, there just weren't that many pokemon, and they were much lower quality.
One could say the world's largest multimedia franchise could "hire more people" to get this stuff done faster, but that's not really how it works. Look up a concept called Brooks' law. Adding people to a project often makes it take longer due to required training (done by your best workers) and increased communication complexity and other social dynamics etc.
I do believe Game Freak can do better in some areas, but solving some of these problems is not a simple task, and there really is nothing in Sword and Shield that actually indicates they are bad game developers.
@Brydontk AAA games will typically top out at 100 or 150 character models. Most will be far fewer than that.
Not only are there 893 pokemon with each one having unique polygon frames, textures, animations, light maps etc., they all have at least one color variant, some have texture variants (Spinda, Vivillon), some have multiple forms (Thundurus, Hoopa, Morpeko), 200 or so have gender differences (Pikachu, Eevee, Zubat) and so on.
If they stick with 2d, it's possible they could've delayed the pokedex prune by another generation or two, but it still would've happened eventually. Because migrating assets to a different game on the same platform is much easier than going from 3DS to Switch, it's entirely possible the next generation (or even a future DLC) will be able to include everything, but for Sword/Shield initial release, it's ridiculous to expect all 893 to show up.
Those saying this stifles creativity: succeeding with rules and restrictions is the definition of creativity. Western AAA developers haven't tried anything new in 20 years. That's always left to Japanese and indie devs, who impose restrictions on themselves or have financial ones.
@Shworange it's not an out of touch statement. The half-statement you decided to quote would be if it were the whole quote.
A game needs exactly one thing: to be fun. That's it. Everything else is optional.
Naturally, there have been some unforeseen issues (blank codes) and delays, but that is pretty typical of Kickstarters, which often provide insight into logistical problems businesses have. This stuff happens, and quite often it's out of the hands of the business you're dealing with.
If you're going to avoid products because they don't come from the nation whose currency you used for the purchase, youre going to be short an awful lot of products. This is not even remotely a reasonable complaint or expectation. In this case, your Switch was manufactured in Japan, China and the US. Game cards are manufactured in all of UK, US, Japan, China and South Korea. Both are made with components and materials sourced from more countries. The other backer rewards are manufactured in some combination of China and the US and almost certainly designed in Japan with materials sourced from more places. Localization is done in several regions, the base software itself is from Japan. Everything I just said will be true of nearly every electronic device or software you buy.
Pandemic: started before those dates. International restrictions were already well underway, not that shipping (maybe parts shipping?) was in progress before April anyway. What an international agency did in defining it as a pandemic and what Japan and western nations did internally isn't particularly relevant. The release date reveal came after the campaign which had given a delivery estimate in (I believe) November 2020, something you agreed to.
Re: Steam codes. Give them to a friend? Try selling them then instead of whining that you can't use a free thing? They did not have to hand those out at all.
If you understand all of this and are still mad at Platinum, then by all means, be mad. If you don't want to understand these things and be mad, then you must just want to be mad.
@RazumikhinPG "why is my game coming from the US?" Because many businesses have things manufactured partially or fully in different countries? Fact is, you agreed to pay in yen on the kickstarter page. This was not hidden from you.
What pre-pandemic mess are you talking about? The pandemic has covered the entire duration of this Kickstarter's life.
Games get ported all the time, but self publishing (for the first time) a remaster for an originally poorly-sold game would be a risky endeavor at best without Kickstarter. Self publishing allowed a PS4 and Steam release.
The only other option might've been to delay other versions. What purpose would that serve? Kickstarter also warns you about literally all of these issues before you even sign up. Platinum also gave away literally thousands of copies of the game because of the shipping issues.
@RazumikhinPG one can't "blame everything" on COVID-19, but international shipping absolutely is something impacted heavily by it. For really obvious reasons.
The store-bought version is not identical to the most basic backer version. Different covers, and all DLC are included in the basic backer version, on top of a Steam code for all physical backers. So there are "extra perks" you're ignoring or not aware of.
People backed the game in yen, not local currency, and this was very obvious at the time. Games tend to have slightly different regional pricing, and those will fluctuate. Buy a Japanese game and it may come out to a different amount depending on your location. I go in having done a little research and buy (or don't) with these things in mind and that results in not being upset in the end.
One can also complain about how "scummy" it is for an established business to use kickstarter, but from a business point of view, it's a smart decision in some cases. It will often result in companies doing things that wouldn't have been worth the risk in a world without a kickstarter campaign to gauge interest.
@RazumikhinPG physical backers also got an additional Steam code for another copy of the game. Yeah, things suck in the world of COVID-19. That's where you can place your blame. Maybe they should've just delayed it for everyone, would that have felt better?
@FlameRunnerFast you're entirely missing the point.
Why would they care to take action if the vast majority of people do not care? Frustrating players because the system did not allow something legal would cause a much bigger stink than allowing a few illegal things. Why spend time and resources messing with something that does what it was intended to do? Now THAT is a bad idea. The fixes you're suggesting are nowhere near as simple as you say.
It matters more in Home because Home's primary functionality is relatively limited, being simply storage and trading. It mattered a lot less in past games because the GTS was a very minor part of the overall experience, and therefore a low priority.
You can either go through life simply assuming people are incompetent/malicious/lazy/whatever and get mad all the time, or go through life knowing you don't have all the facts and recognize people are all doing what makes sense to them with information that you yourself do not have.
@FlameRunnerFast I think you're oversimplifying AND overestimating the impact illegal pokemon (and the ability to request illegal things in trades) had on players' enjoyment of the game which is ultimately the part that matters for future sales.
None of this has ever affected me, and I've put thousands of hours into this series since the GTS was released. Yes, there's a tiny subset of people that cared before Pokemon Home, but most are going to be like me, or care even less because they played less. Having different priorities than a specific subset of vocal players does not equal incompetence.
@FlameRunnerFast then at some point something impossible becomes possible and their systems block possible things and need to be updated. This could add massive amounts of work for something that seems simple. Like every gen 1 pokemon now available at all levels thanks to Pokemon Go.
This is kind of a flawed way of determining this. You may as well have asked "which ones have been played the most?" And the answer to your question would be found in sales figures.
Portability wins out over better visuals every single time, all else being equal. I did get PS4 version of Dragon Quest XI simply because info on the Switch version wasn't available yet.
No point getting too upset over the 80th of 86 characters.
Frankly, the character looks like a ton of fun to play, even if it's not the franchise many people wanted. Sakurai is allowed to put his personal favourites in considering the guy practically gives up his life for the game.
Pass 2 will have some surprises, though none of them will make everyone happy.
I reiterate:
Hey! You haters should search your souls and reawaken the undying light.
To expand: not every character is going to appeal to you. Terry Bogard did not appeal to me, but his addition made perfect sense. NOTHING appeals to everybody and some people are going to be disappointed by each of the remaining 6 fighters.
Sakurai can do whatever he wants, his studio has put together a roster of 86 fighters from all across the gaming universe, getting bent out of shape because #80 of 86 isn't your dream addition tells me you're looking for things to be disappointed about.
