This is excellent on Switch. Enjoying it way more than I did on Xbox. It's perfect to pick up and play when you have 30 minutes spare to do a couple of gigs or a side job. Performance is generally impressive and honestly, I can't tell any difference in graphics from when I played on Series S. I actually think it looks crisper in handheld if anything.
This looks cool. I always enjoy scrolling beat 'em ups but they get a bit repetitive after a while and I normally lose interest before the end. With some story thrown in and the rogue element, this could be more interesting I think.
And yet another month goes by and yet another month we still don't have Mario Golf Advance Tour for the GBA on the online service. Honestly, they're trolling us now with utter dross like Bubsy.
@BanjoPickles That's a strange view to have. I don't think this looks particularly great, but if we stuck by "in a world where X exists, Y is pointless" we'd only have about ten different games.
To be honest, I was hoping they'd just release the 3, 4 and 5 triple pack to Switch 2. If they're going to Kiwami them all up it's going to take ages, and the story in 3 is terribly boring. (But I've not played 4 and 5 yet).
Another month rolls by and still no sign of a number of Mario games being forgotten about by the Switch Online service. They made a song and dance about his 40th anniversary, why not give us the GBA golf and tennis games? Mario Pinball? The service is ridiculous.
Typical greedy Nintendo. They should have been £19.99 each at most. I doubt I'll pick Galaxy 2 up as I have 3D All Stars for the first game and still barely touched it.
@Misima I can't argue with any of your points, you make a good argument, but I still expected, or perhaps, hoped for more on the Switch 2 from this series.
@JumpingJackson Or just play other games? This is the only media we have this discussion about. Why are there not people crying out for a more accessible version of James Joyce's Finnegans Wake? If they want to put difficulty modes in, then fine. Give players more health, deal more damage, but don't patch things to change it for everyone so we all have to play an 'easier' game.
And accusing everyone who doesn't want things to be made easier being people who have "nothing else to offer society" and being "insufferable pricks" says far more about you. It's possible to want the game to remain as it was designed without being an "insufferable pricks". Jesus... 🤦🏻
I don't think it needs to be made easier, but more beads is welcome. I think enemies ought to drop more, or more enemies drop them.
Making bosses easier though? No. Moorwing took me about 20 goes, and I loved it. When I finally beat him it felt like an achievement. Some games are harder than others.
@Altaria_97 That's the biggest issue for me with these games. Want to boot up an old version to play offline career mode? Tough luck, servers are gone. Absolutely no excuse not to let players play their career offline with no servers. We should be holding devs more to account for things like this, I'm amazed it's legal. Effectively locking off your game after two years.
@Misima But the Switch 2 isn't cheaper. It's more expensive than a Series S, which runs the game at 60fps. It's on par with a digital PS5, which runs the game at 60fps. There are plenty of games on Switch 2 running better than this. There are no excuses.
Oh this is disappointing. Much like you, I got in to Basketball through the 2K games. In fact, it was lockdown, I watched the Playoffs (in the bubble) and became a Heat fan. Subscribed to the League Pass every playoffs since then, and really got in to the games. I had high hopes for this on Switch 2. I actually enjoyed 2K20 on Switch back when I played it, but then experienced the game on the 'big' consoles and it was a totally different thing. Smoother, sharper, just better in every way. I really wanted a good handheld option this year but, alas, I'll wait for next years version (or pick this up for a fiver at some point next year...)
That Japanese price is considerably less than the European price! Wonder why. I mean I have no issues with paying £19.99 in the UK, but wonder why it's the equivalent of about £12 in Japan?
@Rovelius I was happy paying for the service in the first place. This (button remapping) is just something that's useful (and yes, should have been there all along).
I remember pirating Outlaws back in the early 2000s and having a right game trying to get it to run even in Windows XP. Another awesome Nightdive re release? Yes please! He Man looks cool too. Obviously Indy is a cool one but not convinced it'll run great, it wasn't perfect on Series S. Doubt I'd pick that up, but at least it means big AAA titles are coming to Switch 2. Now where is Fallout 3 and the Mass Effect trilogy...?
@Cipher36 Yeah same, at £14.99 it's no longer an impulse purchase really. I just don't think these games are worth that for me, personally. Shame the Arcade Archive series very rarely goes on sale either.
@HexagonSun Yeah all fair points. I do hope they think about how they might best implement Wii games if they ever do come to the service. I am dubious though, they'd need to put in some sort of 'choose which games to download' feature (and ideally would let you do this on the GameCube app as it grows, too) otherwise we'd end up having the app be 100+ GB.
@HexagonSun They'll just use the gyro, they won't do anything else. Exactly how they did it for Mario Galaxy on the Switch. Shame because the gyro is never as good as the Wiimote for accuracy but Nintendo are hardly known for putting any effort in to the control schemes on the Online service.
Totally agree about the old systems - I've been hoping to see Mario Golf Advance Tour and the Mario Tennis game for the GBA since they put the GBA on there. Don't really understand why we've never had them!
I was interested in this but disappointed by the screenshots just how similar looking to MH:Rise it looks. Even the menus look very similar from layouts to font.
8 for me. What's there is a lot of fun but the stages just don't have the variety and the game doesn't have the endless inventiveness as Odyssey for me.
@Jemil0392 It was already playable on Switch 2, it was one of the first carts I tried when my new console arrived a few weeks ago. Not sure why they've said the update is needed to play the game on Switch 2!
@Alcea Well yeah but they clearly wanted the GameCube games to entice people to the Switch 2 and, for me at least, it worked. It was one of the main reasons I wanted to pick up the new consoles.
Great review, PJ. I'm playing this for the first ever time at the moment on Switch 2 and loving it. Yes, I got irritated at the fetch quests nonsense before heading to the later dungeons, but once in those dungeons, well, the one I've just done has been my favourite so far (the one you take the girl who can fly and play the harp to).
My experience with Zelda has been limited. I enjoyed ALTTP and Minish Cap but other than the two new open world ones, I'd not played a 3D Zelda before. This has really opened my eyes to the series so I might go back and try Ocarina Of Time and Majoras Mask. I hope they stick the GameCube version of Twilight Princess on the Switch Online service, too.
I've been thinking of replaying Xcom 2 as it was one of my most surprising favourites on Switch. Never been in to TBS games, but this blew me away and I put 90 hours in to it through two playthroughs. Wish the first game was available as I've not played that.
As for Disco Elysium, that was actually patched on Switch 1 halfway through my playthrough of it. It honestly eliminated the loads times almost altogether, such a huge difference. What I'm saying is if you've not played it and don't have a Switch 2 it's still 100% worth playing on the original Switch with all the patches now.
100% they should allow this. In fact, I was certain that if a GameCube app was ever announced then this is how they'd do it. Of course I'll play most the games, but no need for them all to be installed, and stuff like Pokémon Colosseum is never getting played so will just sit taking up space.
@Yalloo Huh, if it would have all fit on the cart anyway it seems strange that they wouldn't have just put it on the cart 🤷 Zero chance I'm buying any of these game key card games physical though, just no point at all.
@Yalloo They won't release a version of the game that's all on the cart, there will be no 'proper physical'. It's either eShop or Game Key Card, and that's the way it'll stay.
What we all really want, though, is Mario Odyssey DLC and upgrade. Would happily pay £20 to play through that again with improved performance, visuals and new content.
@Ryu_Niiyama You can start this DLC a couple of hours in to the main game, when you wake up at Rattay mill.
Just started this game last week and absolutely loving it, somehow put 20 hours in to it already. I think it runs well on Switch and looks genuinely impressive too.
Just picked this up for less than half price in the current sale. I used to be really in to turn based JRPGs but rarely play them these days - who has time, really. But I remember enjoying Persona 4 Golden back on Vita and felt like a giant RPG to get stuck in to. Switch (or another handheld) is the only way I would really be able to play a game of this size these days, so picked it up. I'm literally only one hour in, not even had a battle after the prologue, but enjoying it so far!
@AlleyCat Exactly this, if I'd not already got Rainbow Islands and Bubble Bobble I'd be tempted. May still pick this up in a sale, or wait in hope for the bumper Taito pack with all the games in it.
