Absolutely loved this on PSP (well, I played on Vita) back in the day and it remains my favourite Ys game by far. Added this immediately to my wishlist to pick up in a sale. It would have been a day one purchase if I'd not already got too much else to play through. It's worth the £25 for sure.
Picked this up for half price in the current eShop sale. I'm assuming it's been patched since release, but I've had no performance issues so far. Nice game. The graphics are a little fuzzier than on the big consoles, sure, but otherwise, it's great.
I absolutely loved the original, but ever since Jon Blow revealed himself to be a massive conspiracy nut ***** on Twitter, I decided I wouldn't be giving him any more money.
The three STALKER and two Metro games on Switch are all fantastic ports and offer similar vibes to anyone looking to wander around a radioactive wasteland. I'd play those instead.
@Teksette Wait! What? Really? I love Pinball FX3 on Switch and have most the tables but only have 3 or 4 tables for the newer FX. Never really got in to it as much since they dropped the 15 start challenges mode, but if they're offering previously bought Williams tables for free that's amazing! They always said they absolutely wouldn't be doing this!
@anoyonmus 100%, I'm playing it now and it's great.
Also, whilst a bit of a pain that Rogue is a download, it is not a code in the box but rather downloads as an update to the game so, I think I'm right in saying, even if you buy this pre-owned you'd still have access to Rogue and the DLC.
I'm perfectly happy with the Switch versions of these games. If I'd have wanted to play them at a higher resolution or 60fps I'd have bought them for PS5 or Xbox, but I value being able to play them in handheld far more than the above, which is why the Switch is still my most played console.
Hmm, bit disappointing if I'm really honest. Absolutely loved Atari 50, without a doubt the most incredibly comprehensive retro collection ever and such a lovely package. But more arcade games, Jaguar games, Lynx games etc wouldn't have gone amiss, even Speccy ports of Atari classics would have been nice. Though it pains me to say it, most the 2600 games are utter garbage and don't get played more than a few minutes.
This isn't a criticism aimed specifically just at this DLC collection, but the three packs in general.
@CupidStunt Yeah at the very least they should let us map controls in the main app menu. I know you can do it on the Switch menu itself, but that doesn't work if using the Hori split pad, only the joycons.
I just want to see more games I actually want on the service. I realise this is a specific request, but I feel like why have we got three F-Zero GBA games when we still don't have GBA Mario Golf and Tennis? Yes I know people love F-Zero, but do we really need three of them, basically the same, instead of a more diverse range of games?
Picked this up in a sale a while back after loving Stick Of Truth, and just getting round to playing it now. It's a fun game, as was the first, but I'll admit to being a bit surprised more wasn't made of the loading times in this review. When you have Disco Elysium loading in a fraction of the time this does and the frequency by which loading screens appear, I'm finding it a bit of a distraction. It's normally just about long enough to be an annoyance in my view.
Can't wait for this. Great review and great games. Ever since first playing MvC2 on Dreamcast then going back to play the older titles I've loved this series. Not so much MvC3 onwards, but the older ones for sure. Punisher is a nice bonus, too. Always wondered why MvC was never ported to Switch but now here we are, I can finally put my PS3 to bed 😆
Just picked up the Steelbook from Amazon (original release) for £20 and loving the collection, just the absolute gold standard for retro enthusiasts. Can't wait for the DLC, paid or free, I'm there day one!
@Ulysses I'd still say you're probably better off getting Shovel Knight Treasure Trove and starting with Shovel Of Hope. It's better value, regardless of how much this new one costs! Treasure Trove can often be found for £15 or less and there's loads of content in it.
Shovel Knight was brilliant, and I think the original game is still the best (better than all the DLC campaigns, I mean), but really struggling to see the point of this. I suppose if you've never played it before this will be the best way to play, but I can't see many old fans re-buying it.
"The game runs beautifully in both docked and handheld modes with no frame rate issues or graphical downgrades to report".
From your own review. Bizarre considering the universal reports about how badly it runs on Switch. Yes, this comment is rather late to the party, but I'd been Googling about to see if the game had ever been fixed before considering a purchase. Shame, considering how well the likes of Divinity 2 and Disco Elysium run on the system.
The only Ys game I've ever played was on PSP; The Oath In Felghana, and I absolutely loved it (I wish they'd bring the HD remaster to the west). Picking this up for a fiver in the sale today to add to my pile of shame!
I've been back and forth over getting this for Switch for ages. I originally completed the game on PS4 but never did the two DLC packs. Then when they announced the next-gen update I picked it up for £6 on Xbox Series S. Then I got a PS5 last year and bought the game again for that. I'm about 6 hours in to the PS5 version but so tempted to just bin that off and start again on Switch. The only thing stopping me is knowing I already have two other versions of the game that look so much prettier. It's really just a tradeoff between graphics and portability for me right now, and I can't make up my mind 😫
@cra1g0s There are more than a few games on the Minter collection that you'll play for a couple of minutes just to see what they're like. Realistically there are probably 7 or 8 that you'll put any time in to (although your milage may vary, of course) but those games are brilliant and the accompanying interactive documentary is really nicely done. I'm definitely pleased with the package.
Looking forward to getting in to this after I finish the story mode on the golf game. These two sports titles have been brilliant additions to an already good service. Yes, I'd prefer it if we could just buy the games we wanted, but nobody can say you don't get your monies worth with an NSO subscription. Now if they'd just add the two Gameboy Advance golf and tennis games that would be amazing.
Getting this today, been looking forward to it for ages. It's a shame newer games like Space Giraffe and TxK are not included, but still an incredible collection. I would really hope that those later games could be added as DLC later on, but very doubtful given the licensing issues.
Just picked this up in the sale. Great so far. I have over 30 tables on the Pinball FX3 app for Switch, and I'm disappointed this release has done away with the three 15 star challenges each table had in FX3, but overall really enjoying this so far. The career mode seems the way to go, trying to max out every mission before moving on.
The package is already insane value but I'm waiting for a big sale because although there may be well over 100 games at this point I know that realistically I will play most of them once and never again.
I am tempted by this on Evercade, but full (Evercade) price for one game just pushes it outside insta-buy. May wait for a Switch sale (and I've already got the Evercade Delphine cart pre-ordered to keep me going).
Replying to this year's later and nobody will see this, but out of the dozens of shmups I have on Switch one of my favourites was a 99p game, Q-Yo Blaster. Not too difficult but heaps of fun and a really nice, almost Cuphead-like, graphical style. It's always super cheap in sales, worth a look.
I don't think the original was half as good as people seem to 'remember' it was. I played it back in the day and the game was a pain in the ass even then!
Great review as always, PJ. Added to my wish list as soon as it came out. If I'd not played it through again on Xbox only last year (and it looks great on the Series consoles) it would have been a day one. As it is, I'm currently replaying RDR2 and plan to pick this up to carry on the story when I'm finished. Hopefully by then it'll be at least a few quid off the asking price.
@russell-marlow It's fine if you don't think it deserves a 10. I think it does. If this was just original Quake II released exactly as it was back in the day, I'd be inclined to agree, but as a whole package and taking in to account value for money, I think it deserves the score it got. Like I said, it's all subjective.
@russell-marlow Context is everything. When this came out there were very few FPS games around. The genre has evolved, sure, but it's unfair to compare it to modern games. It's very of its time and probably appeals more to people who played it the first time around. It's still a brilliant game in my view.
@WaveBoy Quake actually uses the gyro in the screen itself for motion controls in handheld. I know this because gyro still works with my Hori Split Pad attached which does not have gyro. It annoys me really that if Quake can use the screen gyro why can't other games! Play Zelda with the Hori pad and gyro aiming does not work, or in most other games too.
@Link-Hero No need for an Xbox release. The original is backwards compatible and looks better than this remaster with all its upscaling and enhancements.
@smithyo Yeah I loved Quake 2 on PS1. My friend and I would play deathmatch with a piece of cardboard taped down the middle of the TV screen so you didn't know where the other person was, except we got to know the maps so well you could still tell where they were from the tiny sliver of screen you could see under the cardboard divider. 😆
Picked this up last week in a sale for about £10 on Switch and have managed to cram about 20 hours in so far, I love it! Even doing the laundry is fun in that mindless 'watering crops in Starview Valley' kind of way. I've expanded my laundry three times and have loads of Arcade games available to play now. They're not all of the same quality but some are really fun to play. The game has a really addictive hook to it and I can't see me stopping any time soon.
