That really is a spectacular box, and I don't normally pay attention to these things. I can't see spending the kind of money it would take to own one, but it is certainly eye-catching.
I'd much rather see a developer make a true Judge Dredd game. I find it irritating that some lazy developer tries to piggyback on a storied franchise by using creative spelling to ALLUDE to Dredd but doesn't bother to get the license. Some say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I just think it's unethical crap.
Oh, and the generic neon artwork and simplistic 3D models are amateur hour.
I've seen so, so many of these titles in other compilations before. Where are the gems? Where are the obscure, rarely-seen titles like Commando, King of Dragons, Power Stone, Magic Sword, Legendary Wings, Cobra Command, and Break Thru? Just lots of rehashed ports from other platforms.
Can you count a game "sold" that's part of a collection? If so, you'd have to double-count every game included in every collection so far.
Really, though, counts only matter to the accounting department who needs to determine ROI. In a case like this, SF2 would account for 1/20th of the ROI on the SNES Classic Mini. They could then apply roughly 1/20th of the total profit from the SNES Mini to the cost of completion for Star Fox 2 to determine whether or not the internal development time had been well-spent. (They also have to have predicted whether or not its inclusion might have influenced total unit sales.)
Head-spinning stuff with lots of math. Something I'm wholly unsuited for.
Are we sure RCMADIAX doesn't have an alias? I think that the amount of thought that went into writing this comment exceeded the amount it took to design that game. The word "shovelware," as used in reference to this game, is an insult to shovels. At least they're useful for something.
I always use multifactor authentication wherever available. Always. New hacks are announced on an almost weekly basis and with free tools like Google's I can't think of any reason not to protect your assets.
@Nintendoer I think that Nintendo is telling us, subtly, that we can either have ongoing supplies of the NES and SNES Classic systems or we can have the Virtual Console. I strongly believe that Nintendo is convinced that they can double-dip, selling Classic consoles to the very consumers that will buy those same (portable) titles--again--on Switch.
The VC will come when Nintendo is certain they've exhausted the retro console market and not a month before.
@hcfwesker That really is a brilliant idea. It also incentivizes consumers to join My Nintendo and/or purchase Nintendo products while also preventing scalpers from using bots to scoop up inventory. I hope Nintendo staff reads sites like these and recognizes how clever your idea is.
Looks like Axiom Verge will be my next purchase. Spent so much time completing the hard mode of Zelda I simply haven't bought any other Switch titles. Hope it's as good as the reviews indicate.
I started to put on my glasses because the images were so blurry, then I remembered that's what all N64 games look like. Some games are really great, but I do not miss SGI's graphics chip.
@Anti-Matter Who knows? Their twitter and FB have been silent since early July. I highly doubt, though, that the Polymega will come in cheaper than a RetroUSB. It has enormous potential--if it's not vaporware--but it's almost certainly going to be a premium product.
That made them the second largest shareholder at the time. I don't know how much they own now, but it's hardly surprising that Sony platforms (including the nearly defunct Vita) are the only supported consoles. Steam has never been and will never be a competitor to consoles.
Enough or should I spend another ten seconds--time you could have spent as well--doing the research you're too lazy to do?
I've never had any interest in any of Square's 3D remakes of their Final Fantasy series, and I have no interest in this. The classic sprite-based originals are still viable today. Obviously, Sony paid Square for exclusive access and since Square's CEO sleeps at the foot of Kaz Hirai's bed I'm hardly surprised it's exclusive to their platforms. (Oh, and PC, which threatens their console business in no way whatsoever.)
@Akropolon Look up TimeSplitters Rewind. It's a fan project at this point, and only for PC. They're struggling to develop using the current iteration of the Cryengine, but they seem devoted. Also, they have been talking with Crytek and at this point, Crytek is not raising any objections.
These projects tend to fizzle or are shut down, but there is a slight hope that it will come to fruition.
I saw that sub-heading, "Timeswapper" and immediately thought, "Timesplitter" and dreamed of a day that Timesplitters would be released for play on Switch. A girl can dream.
I just wish that the e-Shop would allow for user reviews. It does not require curation, but I find reviews from other owners invaluable for my decision-making. It works for Google Play, Steam, and virtually every other place I can buy downloadable games, so why not for Switch?
@NEStalgia
If companies want to circumvent critics they need to provide playable demos, full stop. I'm not going to pay $40-$60 to test drive a game. The expense is much too high and it's why consumers listen to critics in the first place.
Not all that surprising. The previews set an expectation that the game would underwhelm and thus review confirms it. I hope Nintendo recognizes that players want a true sequel soon.
@joey302 I'll second that it's weird that they didn't include Xevious in this compilation. They have put it into almost every other one. I'll also agree with the others that state that the price to content ratio is awful.
I'm not sure how you can invoke the "spirit of LucasGames" with graphics that awful. All of LA's titles were exceptionally well-designed but whoever drew this game needs to be sent back to kindergarten to complete their education.
The project funded at less than $20,000 which is roughly a third (or less) of what most beginning programmers make out of college. What kind of quality can you expect from a game that cost the equivalent of a college graduate's first four months of employment?
No Switch, no sale. (This includes posters or any other swag.) Capcom, put this on the platform it deserves to be on. Your efforts on Switch, so far, suck.
@Blister
It just feels like Nintendo is making the exact same mistakes every time, both with 3rd party support and online connectivity (per other articles.)
In this case, world class third parties apart from Ubisoft continue to believe that their titles simply won't sell on Nintendo hardware. That's why they bring second rate titles to the Switch. Titles which involve minimal effort, aside from using the Unreal or Unity engine dev kit and a small amount of effort to move the title across. Anything else simply doesn't transition to the Switch.
Meanwhile, we get endless ports of Steam and Google Play titles from "indie" developers, which is simply code for a few guys, an idea, and about as much money as the bigger companies spend on toilet paper. More often than not we get pixel graphics or line art in a "style" that, like this, looks designed to hide the cheapness of the title or capitalize on the "retro" craze currently underway. And the Nintendophiles, desperate for ANYTHING, continue to praise them as worthy substitutes for the key, major titles that appear on other platforms.
They aren't.
I'm not the kind of guy who buys Google Play stuff, nor do I spend on cheap Steam titles. I know they simply won't interest me, nor will I spend much time with them beyond the first day or so before the novelty wears off. I've bought too many titles this way.
Nintendo seems content to keep things status quo. They make enough money on their own titles and continue to permit garbage dealers like RCMADIAX to produce their offal (spelling intended) titles, skimming a small revenue stream in return.
For me, it's not enough. I'll continue to play my Switch--my only "modern" console (though my two year old NVidia Shield TV has virtually the same processor)-- and I'll buy a few Nintendo titles that appeal. In the meantime, half-baked garbage like this will continue to discourage me from touching these weak third-party efforts from a few developers who haven't the time, the talent, or the resources to produce professional, AA quality work.
@Haiassai The problem, which didn't exist back when Ken Griffey was made, is licensing. Most of the major sports franchises are wrapped up in exclusive contracts with other companies like EA and Sony. Nintendo could make a baseball game, but without the MLBPA and MLB licenses nobody would buy it. Such is the state of modern sports gaming.
I know the emphasis should be on gameplay, but god I'm getting sick of these mobile-Switch titles rolling out almost continuously. Very few Switch games seem to be developed by AAA, AA, or even B+ developers. Most of the heavy lifting is being done by Nintendo, who can only roll out so many titles per year. Very few of these cutesy, cheap-looking games appeal to me and I've yet to purchase a single one.
Are these really satisfying other Switch owners in lieu of titles with deeper gameplay and, dare I say it, first-class graphics?
You can buy the exact same game on mobile right now for $4.99. I'd hardly call this one a "win" for the Switch. (It's also only rated three out of five stars on Google Play.) Meh.
@Kalmaro Less than you'd think. Because monsters regenerate and because the early bows rarely have a "quick shot" option, by the time you put another arrow in the nock, part of that enemy's HP has already regenerated. Because you're also attacking monsters one level higher than normal, it takes a crazy number of arrows--even with criticals--to down them, at least until you get better bows or +attack power bonus food/armor. I was all "bow+arrows" in the first go-round, but I'm forced to focus more on melee weapons and perfect dodges/blocks to survive.
Master Mode is a torture and a joy. It's forcing me to play better and more stealthily. I've died more times than I can count, but I'm improving. Since Zelda is still the only Switch game I own--or am interested in owning for awhile--the DLC was easily worthwhile.
Not going to read the article, but looking at the image on the link I am still at war with myself. The collector in me sees that Tingle suit and says, "Well, you HAVE to find it!" But the inner me, that finds Tingle as creepy as hell, says, "Oh, no you DO NOT!" Arg!
@abbyhitter Agreed on the set bonus. I bought most of the Gerudo town jewelry items and spent resources upgrading them, but I never wear them because they don't count towards the set bonus. I kind of wish the developers would allow that to work so that you can do a little more customizing of your outfits, should you desire. The Midna helmet is especially fetching.
@JamesR I am in the same boat. I've got 420+ seeds but I'll be DANGED if any of the 500 remaining are remotely obvious. I'd imagine some are those accursed stones in trees, single stones sitting in the middle of nowhere, and perhaps puzzle types (like the "field goal" types I've done once or twice) that I'm too dumb to notice. 900 seeds, of which 50% aren't even useful. For collectaholics, it's hair-pulling time!
God dangit. I JUST finished the game last night (save one shrine and a few pieces of armor I haven't upgraded yet) and now THIS comes along! As Al Pacino once famously screamed, "Just when I was out...they PULL ME BACK IN!!"
@Sinton Read more. If you read what the Retroarch guys said, it sounds as though Sega used them for a couple weeks, decided to go their own route, and dropped them so they could cheap out. And this is the result. The Retroarch guys seem a bit naive, but they seem to have acted a whole lot more ethically and professionally than Sega.
I'm rather hoping this is available via my Shield TV. Playing them with an actual controller would be nice. I'm not holding my breath for the Switch port, though, since Nintendo seems to be in no hurry to introduce a Virtual Console via which these Sega classics might be made available.
"Improvements to prevent unintended HDMI input change with certain TVs while the console is docked in Sleep Mode"
Holy cr*p, I've been waiting for this one for SO long. It alone makes the update worthwhile and no that is not sarcasm. I'm so sick of unplugging my Switch every time I want to watch my Shield TV.
I haven't played a Sonic game in twenty years. Since the only game I own on Switch right now is Zelda, I may just pick this one up when it's released. Sounds good.
I don't think there is any possible way that Nintendo could meet the demand for a SNES Mini. Even if they made 10M units, which they won't, scalpers would still go crazy scooping up as many batches as they could. The NES Mini proved much too profitable for them, so a bigger batch would simply mean even more profit for them.
I can't think of a system that scalpers couldn't game. The only way they could possibly meet demand would be to sell to consumers directly and allow backorders. (Nintendo has never, to my knowledge, allowed consumers to buy backordered products in their online store.)
I don't see it happening. What happened with the NES Classic Mini WILL happen with the SNES Classic Mini. There is even greater demand for it than its predecessor.
P.S. This system is no different than any other clone. For those of us who want LEGAL copies of games with 100% perfect emulation, this is a non-starter.
If competitive gameplay was such a focus for Nintendo, why is their online system so antiquated compared to the competition? Why were no further details of Nintendo's online services mentioned at E3? And how many e-Sports tournaments do they sponsor?
To look back and claim that local multiplayer and a promotional tour somehow qualify them as e-sports pioneers seems a bit of a stretch. But Reggie has always been better spouting endless hype than facts.
I hate to be negative, but the graphics are terribly bland and reminiscent of an up-converted Wii game. It's probably a great game, but a truly ugly port.

I strongly suspect that it's more about squeezing dollars out of mini console sales (the TBA SNES Mini) than it is technical or legal in nature.
Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Sets Out Nintendo's Stance On eSports
If competitive gameplay was such a focus for Nintendo, why is their online system so antiquated compared to the competition? Why were no further details of Nintendo's online services mentioned at E3? And how many e-Sports tournaments do they sponsor?
To look back and claim that local multiplayer and a promotional tour somehow qualify them as e-sports pioneers seems a bit of a stretch. But Reggie has always been better spouting endless hype than facts.
Re: First Impressions: Slicing Our Way Through Fire Emblem Warriors
I hate to be negative, but the graphics are terribly bland and reminiscent of an up-converted Wii game. It's probably a great game, but a truly ugly port.
