Re: Nintendo "Laughed Their Asses Off" At Microsoft's Buyout Offer

AirElephant

@Shiro28
Isn't that the truth? Aside from Halo and Forza, have their first-party titles established them as a game studio on Nintendo or Sony's level? I've always looked at MS as a hardware company that is very dependent upon 3rd parties, strong hardware, and deep pockets to remain competitive with Sony. For all of the wonderful Rare IP's, even with the departure of the Stamper Brothers, they seem to have the reverse-Midas touch. I'm glad they haven't had the opportunity to buy Nintendo so far.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #70 - Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts

I really wish the GBA version had been allowed, as it was the clear winner but I held my nose and picked the Japanese version.

How can you look at the US/EU version and not cringe at the impossible anatomy of the knight with the elbow that bends the wrong way? Ouch! On a positive note, the zombies in the background remind me of the ape in the classic arcade game, Toki...

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #51 - Super Aleste / Space Megaforce

I'm not sure why folks like the Japanese art so much. It's extremely poor. The perspectives are wrong and the color blending and application is awful. I've seen art students, let alone professionals, turn out better work. At least the European and U.S. artists had a modicum of talent. Yeesh.

At least the artist was smart enough to hide the pilot's hands and feet, notoriously difficult to draw properly, because they probably couldn't. That's something, I suppose.

Re: Poll: Should Nintendo Release A Digital-Only Switch?

AirElephant

@Nintendofan83

I'm sure this won't get read by the original author, but the sentiment that "Nintendo is too cheap" to include additional memory is false. CONSUMERS pay the price in either case. Including additional storage up-front increases the base price of the unit. Nintendo wanted a system it could sell for $299. Moving from 32GB--at the time--to any other size would have mandated a higher base price. Consumers are extremely cost-conscious and there is a lot of research to determine the cut-off point.

I regularly read Arstechnica and I can't tell you how many times I've heard readers complain about the lack of expandable storage on phones. People love expansion options for portable devices. IMO, the use of external SD cards--many of which can be bought on discount at any given time--makes for a vastly more flexible system than fixing a 128GB+ drive in the hardware.

The Switch is well-designed. If I'm going to pay for memory either way, I'd rather choose when and where I can do so.

Re: Nintendo Switch Is 'Barely In The Middle' Of Its Life Cycle

AirElephant

I've been looking at early screens of XBOX Series X games, like the Gollum game, and what I'm seeing doesn't look like a massive leap beyond what we're getting right now. Some of that comes from the fact that developing hyper-realistic games is expensive and very time-consuming.

I think that as time goes on, the visuals produced by future generations of the Switch and the other systems will converge. Not that CPUs and GPUs won't get immensely more powerful, but rather that the balance between realism and the need to put product on shelves will converge, leading to smaller and smaller real-world differences.

I love my Switch as it is. It's all I need in a console and it could go on another five years with high-quality titles and I'd be happy. BOTW is, in my long lifetime, the best and most amazing game I've ever played. As long as Nintendo remains devoted to producing games like that, we've nothing to worry about.

Re: Review: Disaster Report 4: Summer Memories - A Totally Unique Experience Marred By Technical Problems

AirElephant

@nessisonett I have no idea why so many are saying they want to play it. The Push Square review not only savages it, but it highlights some really disturbing material in the game play. Why anyone would want to waste $60 on a title that's this bad, especially on Switch, beggars belief. It makes me wonder if it's the very prurient stuff that the Push Square's article mentions that has some of the folks here salivating...

Re: PC Engine Mini Production And Shipment Impacted By Coronavirus

AirElephant

I pre-ordered mine a year ago but I'm not worried if I don't get it this month. What I am still surprised and a little bummed about is that they didn't include Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. It's a weird little title that was a pack-in when I bought the TG-16 in the U.S. Was it good? No. But nostalgia is a powerful thing. Still, the TG-16 had some really enjoyable games and I'll be glad to have one of the Minis of my own at some point.

Re: Fire Emblem's Success Has Helped Intelligent Systems Grow In More Ways Than One

@Tykut
It looks like the percentage has increased between 2011 and 2020. Graphs, especially those with large graduations, are a little difficult to generate precise figures from but overall head count in 2011 appears to be 130 employees while 2020 appears to be 170. 30 were women in 2011 and 50 in 2020. That means women were about 23% of the workforce then and 29% now. Not explosive growth, and it dipped to 21% in 2015, but it's something...

Re: Feature: Where Does Nintendo Switch Fit In The PS5 And Xbox Project Scarlett Next-Gen War?

AirElephant

I have only the Switch and when the PS5 and next XBOX arrive I'll STILL only have a Switch. For some of us, it's only Zelda, Metroid, and other Nintendo titles that matter. I stopped hardcore gaming decades ago and the kind of games on Switch are perfect for me.

Nintendo seems to have withdrawn from the "power wars" that Sony amd Microsoft seem to be obsessed with. And Nintendo is wildly profitable finding its own niche. They realized that it was pointless to continue to dump tons of R&D into expensive hardware that's only marginally different and the Switch was their brilliant answer.

So no, I don't care about any "power gap" because the games I've enjoyed on Switch are pretty enough for me. Great games, good hardware, and I'm happy.

Re: My Nintendo Offering Unique Box Arts For Fire Emblem: Three Houses (North America)

AirElephant

@ArmoredGoomba It's just such an odd loyalty program. We've all said it ad nauseum, but the entire premise of Nintendo's loyalty program is archaic and borderline useless. Image files based on advertising artwork that cost points? Discounts only on games for systems either no longer commercially available (Wii-U) or greatly in decline (3Ds). And precious few physical items for sale.

I continue to wonder if Nintendo were to eliminate them altogether, whether anyone would even notice or not. I have my doubts.

Re: Guide: Where To Pre-Order Sega Genesis / Mega Drive Mini

AirElephant

@impurekind
Why? A pre-order is free and can be canceled if, when you see the final list, you're not satisfied. History indicates that if you wait too long you'll have difficulty getting your hands on one of these retro consoles, unless Sega floods the market with them.

So far, even with this short list, the only disappointment is that they went with the "classic" three-button rather than six-button design for the controller.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Might Be Renaming The eShop

AirElephant

A name change on the eShop without a complete overhaul is nothing more than putting lipstick on a pig. It needs a better search, by far, and AI-driven tools to suggest games based on purchase history. If all they do is slap a new coat of paint on it, who cares?

Re: Nintendo Taking A "Big Step Forward" Embracing Content Creators, According To Head Of YouTube Gaming

AirElephant

I'd take any discussions with the head of YouTube Gaming with a large grain of salt. Remember, they're in a heated battle--one that they're currently losing--with Twitch for the minds of game streamers and their audience. They want to project a very positive outlook and Nintendo's position shift is a PR boost. I highly doubt, though, that YTGaming has much to do with Nintendo's decision, and they're merely riding Big N's coattails on this one.
