R.B.I. Baseball 17 is coming to the Nintendo Switch, it has been confirmed.
The game has a launch date of September 5th, and showcases officially-licenced teams, a full season mode, local multiplayer and a roster edit mode. It will retail for $29.99.
Here's the press release:
R.B.I. Baseball 17, developed by MLBAM and featuring Los Angeles Dodgers 23-year-old All-Star shortstop Corey Seager on its U.S. and global covers, is set this summer to release a new version of the Major League Baseball video game for Nintendo Switch. This latest edition of R.B.I. Baseball 17 will be available September 5, at which time it will become the first officially licensed professional sports game to be available at retail outlets for the Nintendo Switch console.
Fans will have yet another platform to access the authentic R.B.I. Baseball experience on the go or share with friends and family at home, competing in unparalleled MLB action and features in new ways with the Switch’s myriad and unique controller options that supports gaming everywhere. R.B.I. Baseball 17 will be among the few sports titles with widespread platform distribution, making it available to fans across Xbox One, PlayStation 4, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets and now Nintendo Switch consoles.
R.B.I. Baseball, which has long featured fast paced and fun gameplay, is a full nine-inning game in less than 20 minutes with easy-to-use controls. The game features Season, Postseason, Exhibition and Local Multiplayer, including season saving and simulation capabilities. All 30 MLB ballparks are rendered in stunning detail and teams feature the latest rosters in regular updates. Players can modify lineups with complete MLB rosters or classic rosters allowing them to play their games their ways.
Will you be buying this one?

Hmmm... are these games good? Anyone play them? At $30 this is definitely a game I'd consider. Would be good for car rides or local multiplayer.
What I really want is another BIGS or Mario Baseball title.
Not a baseball fan but more power to those who will enjoy this.
Day 1 purchase.
I want Chibi looking with a lot of character customization.
Somewhat like Little League series 2008 / 2009 Wii.
All the reviews I see are abysmal.
Not nearly as good as MLB The Show, but if you don't have a PlayStation you're stuck with this.
Finally, a quality baseball game on a Nintendo platform. Seems the Switch is slowly shaking off all the old rules from 3rds! I need sports games!
It's nice to see actual sports games on a Nintendo system again. I enjoy sports games, and there is always a big audience for them, so its good to have them available on the Switch, matching other offerings on other consoles.

Here's the chibi part at least and don't laugh, it was a good game!
Basketball, check.
Wrestling, check.
Soccer, check-ish (Well, lets hope EA put the effort in.)
Baseball, check.
Already the Switch is outdoing the Wii U on annual sports games. Maybe Golf or Murican Football could be next?
Probably not getting this one, unless its on sale. RBI baseball just doesnt do it for me, played it on steam and it lacks depth compared to The Show 17 or even the depth that MLB 2K13 had (unfortunately 2k no longer makes mlb games). Though it is baseball on the switch, I dont know if 30 is worth it being it is 20 on ps4 and xbox.
I really want to see another iteration Mario Super Sluggers for the switch.
I loved RBI Baseball as a kid and will most likely buy this. This game is not a Sim, but more for those who want some fun and quick baseball action.
Last R.B.I game I played was on the NES with my dad. I honestly didn't know it was still a running series.
@zionich it only came back like four our five years ago
@amishpyrate Most of the review knocks seem to be about the outdated graphics and the fact that the game has been little more than a roster update for the last few years. If that's the case, I suspect Switch owners looking for baseball game action really won't mind at all since there's nothing else on the platform to compare it to.
As a huge proponent of arcade sports over sims, and a massive baseball fan, this is great news. And if they've updated Aaron Judge to reflect his first half dominance, all the better! $24 bucks with Amazon pre-order....gotta bite.
Well it's certainly not The Show but for every platform other than PS4, it's the only other MLB licensed baseball game, so better than nothing I guess.
Love it! Day 1 purchase for me too. Only wish it was MLB Power Pros instead.
Will definitely purchase. Glad Nintendo is getting sports games
@Grez assuming I will actually be able to find a switch to buy
@Angelic_Lapras_King What I wouldn't give for Madden on my Switch. I would play the ever-living heck out of it. Madden 13 is STILL my most-played title on Wii U, and even though I had it since launch, and it's a pretty crappy port, I still love the game. If I could bring a fully-featured Madden game with me anywhere? Oh man. Heaven.
I'm really excited to see this finally coming to Nintendo! Now all I have to do is find a Switch.
Mario Superstar Baseball on the GCN!
Wow now that's a surprise announcement! An official baseball game for a Nintendo console and a retail version as well. Now...if only the game was a little better than it is. But it's a start. The publisher is smart to realize that Nintendo fans enjoy our national pastime as well!
Not really interested in sports games at all, but I have to say the RBI series was one of the few sports games I played and enjoyed on the NES.
Of course, without the Tengen logo/cart this somehow seems less authentic.
So what are the odds of Baseball Stars ever being revived?
cool just bring madden & ice hockey as well
We need a hockey game on Switch. Hasn't been a portable hockey game since NHL 07 or 08 on the PSP. Don't care if it's a 3 on 3 arcade style, or a hardcore sim, give us some hockey!
You can buy the exact same game on mobile right now for $4.99. I'd hardly call this one a "win" for the Switch. (It's also only rated three out of five stars on Google Play.) Meh.
EDIT: Gameinformer savages it. http://www.gameinformer.com/games/rbi_baseball_17/b/xboxone/archive/2017/03/31/not-even-worthy-of-the-little-leagues.aspx
So is this a game made with phones in mind, then ported to the X Box One and PS4?
If it ain't MLB The Show, I don't want it
I may not partake, but I'm glad nonetheless to see more sports titles.
Heard some really bad reviews of this game. Seems to be a barely functional baseball game that just barely has the basic content
Looks nice but it needs online or I'm not interested.
Well up for this. Have played MLB the show bit always prefer a more arcade experience
I want to be excited. Bit envious of The Show on PS4. RBI Perfect Inning on Android is okaaaay. Haven't tried this as £5 is a bit much for a punt on a phone game in my opinion. £30 is a hefty markup as we're seeing other mobile games for about a tenner, unless it's a lot closer to the home console version.
I would also like to see an ACA Super Baseball 2020, and the wacky Super Mega Baseball Extra Innings. The latter is on Shield already.
I worked at MLBAM for five years. I was there when the first two games were being made. I can tell you very minimal effort was put into these games and by the looks of it, nothing has changed. Don't spend more than $5 on this unless you're absolutely desperate for a baseball game
Not bad for a 5 pounds game on the phone.
R.B.I. Baseball, though. If you REEEEAALLYY need a baseball game and you don't have a PS4, I'd say wait until One of the 2 Baseball Stars games comes out on ACA NEOGEO, the 2nd preferably.
@Agent721 I'd like to see another Baseball Stars come out when SNK can get around to it. I'm not into sports games at all, mostly played with my brother since those were his games, but Baseball Stars on the NES was my favorite and well ahead of its time. A close 2nd would be Baseball Stars 2 on the NEOGEO, it's the perfect (unlicensed) pick up and play arcade baseball game, in my eyes!
As some have mentioned, RBI Baseball has a well-earned reputation for mediocrity. That being said, seeing how MLB the Show is remaining exclusive to the PS4, there's just not a lot of options for baseball fans. For that reason, I might pick this up.
@daveh30 I'd go crazy for an NHL Hitz game on Switch.
Not a baseball guy, but I'm super happy to see these games coming to the Switch. It feels like every other day there's a new announcement on Twitter, which is a lot more that we ever got with the Wii U (or even the 3DS). Seems like Switch is part of the zeitgeist indeed.
"Stunning detail". Lol.
"Wii Sports 4" couldn't come soon enough. Jump on it, Nintendo.
I'm not a huge baseball fan, but I'm actually tempted. I will wait for more Switch specific gameplay footage though...
@zionich The original RBI Baseball was a localization of Family Stadium, a Namco baseball series that probably ran at least a decade or more but even that stopped getting annual updates (but at least periodic updates).
But I think after the first they were Tengen originals.
It'd be nice to see a new Ken Griffey Jr.-esque game
I guess if you can't get any other baseball game... But I wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Hopefully a better baseball sim shows up. I'm still waiting for NHL2k17/18
DAY 1!!!!!!!!
I WAS interested..... Until I saw the reviews for it. Yikes. Unless the Switch version somehow changes things up, I don't think I'm THAT desperate for a sports game.
I'm not a sports game fan, but isn't "The Show" THE baseball game on PS4/Xbox?
I really wish they made these new RBI games in the style of the old NES games.
@Mr_Zurkon I think The Show is PS exclusive, but I might be wrong about that.
@Haiassai
The problem, which didn't exist back when Ken Griffey was made, is licensing. Most of the major sports franchises are wrapped up in exclusive contracts with other companies like EA and Sony. Nintendo could make a baseball game, but without the MLBPA and MLB licenses nobody would buy it. Such is the state of modern sports gaming.
Wow... that looks lame. On all systems but looks like hard. Moves choppy. Glad the Switch is getting games but it isnt an A-list one. Oh well, still waiting for Mario🙂
Anybody remember Nintendo's Pennant Chase Baseball? It was a GameCube exclusive that got cancelled but was looking pretty darn good? Yeah, I'd rather see that come back on the eventual VC than this RBI faff🙂
@Captain_Gonru @Robotron2084
Here you go guys, "enjoy".
http://www.aegames.net/
@Spoony_Tech I wouldn't call RBI Baseball 17 a quality game. If you want a good baseball game MLB The Show 17 is the way to go.
Yay! I'm buying! Been waiting for good baseball
@Spoony_Tech if it has online LETS PLAY!
@Angelic_Lapras_King there is Golf Story.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyjTzc7EH4
@Tasuki I have The Show 16 on the ps3 and it is an excellent game but this one here will do as options are thin.
@Windy Most definitely!
@MarioPhD I had to look it up as I wasn't sure either, you are correct about it being a Sony exclusive.
This is a must buy for me. I can still remember playing RBI on the NES with my friends. Well unless it's made/published by EA, then it's a pass.
Bring over Rusty's Real Deal Baseball as a full game instead. It's a classic.
Why do all the players have wimpy little skinny legs? Why are they deformed? If you go cartoon go all the way cartoon. That's art designs terrible. It's like they want to be realistic but also goofy. Like some bad modern cartoonist designed it. It makes me feel they aren't serious about it and that it's probably for young kids. What a turn off.
This franchise always sucked.
I find it funny how many people will savage 'lazy' EA for bringing what will probably be a good football (soccer) game to Switch because it lacks some features of the PS4/Xbone version, but will let off every failing of a non-EA made Baseball game that is by all accounts absolutely terrible.
Last I recall for MLB Baseball games (and it might have been said in previous comments), a company is allowed to make a first party game using the MLB property. So if Nintendo wanted to, they could make their own MLB licensed baseball game.
@Spoony_Tech I'm hoping for a just swing the Bat Mechanic. Every baseball game for the past 15 years has made hitting more complicated than it needs to be. Just let me swing the stick! Of course real hitting is hard but videogame baseball games are more fun when you just swing like the old Baseball Stars on NES love that game
@Windy: +1 for the Baseball Stars reference. Best ever.
Anyone have any idea why RBI Baseball 2017 for Switch is not listed for pre-order on Amazon?!?
