Remember the Retro-Bit Generations? We didn't think all that much to it when we reviewed it back in 2016, but the company is trying to make amends with a second offering, this time focused on the history of Capcom and Data East.
The Super Retro-Cade looks physically similar to the Generations, but comes with new wired controllers, save states, SD card support, HDMI and AV out and 90 titles, which are a mixture of arcade hits and console releases.
Confirmed for the system are:
- Strider
- Strider (NES port)
- Final Fight
- Final Fight 2
- Final Fight 3
- Mighty Final Fight
- Mercs
- Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
- Ghosts 'n Goblins
- Armored Warriors
- Forgotten Worlds
- Heavy Barrel
- Secret Agent
- Mega Twins
- Three Wonders
- Mega Man 2
- Mega Man 3
- Burgertime
- Bad Dudes
- Knights of the Round
- Fighter's History
- Captain Commando
- Joe & Mac
- Son Son
- Karate Champ
- Codename Viper
- 1943
- Side Pocket
- Street Fighter 2010
Retro-Bit is hinting that games from other companies will be announced in the future to flesh out that 90-title roster.
The system launches this holiday season and will cost $59.99. It would seem that Retro-Bit has put quite a bit of time and effort into making this more successful than the Generations, which was blighted by unfortunate emulation problems.

I would need to see some reviews before I touch this. If it has 90 good titles with decent emulation than and the controllers are good then at that price it's a steal. But I am not too convinced this will turn out to be anything good.
I don’t want all these mini retro machines. Just give us the VC, Nintendo. My heart aches every time I think about all the classic games locked on my WiiU.
The 2 Nintendo retro consoles are enough for me.
Those controllers look atrocious. Wish they were Mega Drive/Saturn style layouts instead. Or actual joysticks, if it's supposed to be mainly arcade titles.
That's a pretty great selection of games so far imo (if the rest of the games are on the same level then it will have a pretty strong lineup of 90 titles as far as I'm concerned). And it's cool that it allows both AV and HDMI output too.
I've seen so, so many of these titles in other compilations before. Where are the gems? Where are the obscure, rarely-seen titles like Commando, King of Dragons, Power Stone, Magic Sword, Legendary Wings, Cobra Command, and Break Thru? Just lots of rehashed ports from other platforms.
And frankly, the console itself looks like crap.
I definitely saw Combatribes in there!
Uuuuuugly. Black looked ok. White plastic is so hard to get right and this... doesn't do it.
I know this is just the Retro-Bit Generations with no Irem games anymore but give me some Kid Niki, Karnov, Shadowrun, Street Fighter III: Third Strikes, Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper, Mega Man X, Mega Man X2, Mega Man X3, Darkstalkers, and Demon's Crest then I may eventually be excited to buy it.
No just no. Not after the first, and that game list gives no good reason to buy it this time either. All that could run on an existing hacked NES or SNES Mini (or put on any android device with no hacking) as it is.
I love Armored Warriors and I would love to financially support these companies by paying for some of the obscure arcade titles I love, but I'm gonna stick to using an Android tablet or Pi with MAME to play the games as I know the emulation on this will be terrible.
I will wait for the full list of games and review before I take the plunge.
I'll wait for Virtual Console thank you. Problem with these things is there's about over a hundred of them already....
Ugh just stick em on a cartridge and sell it for $60 on the switch. I would be much more inclined to do that than have ANOTHER box under the TV. Too many of these cheap knockoff mini consoles to count
armored warriors is the only beat em up on here i need, so ill get this for that game alone.
its a freakin beat em up!
and arcade only
with robots.
come on people!
Better off with a Pandora’s Box for CPS library
All I'm hearing from Retro-Bit is: "Guys! Wait! We swear we've got it right this time!"
The original Generations was such a crapshoot, with games stuck sideways for no reason, an other odd emulation errors, which sadly have no way to be fixed since the console was locked down.
Now they expect us to trust them with a 90 game console, of which not all the games have even been confirmed yet? Pass.
Wouldn't want this at the moment, as the only titles drawing me in are Side Pocket (might depend on the version they use though) and Joe & Mac. Get some sports titles like Street Hoop on there, and better caveman games like Congo's Caper and it'd start looking better.
Yeah another vote for pandora box 4 , my bro has one built into a twin arcade stick , it's awesome.
The game list is amazingly good
lol @ burgertime. wasted every day after school playing that and waiting for my parents.
Sooo Nintendo Life just jock rides any and all flash back/retro emulation machines now?
I think that people should look elsewhere, such as in the direction of the Seedi. Bit of a crappy name, but definitely a VERY interesting console:

@ThanosReXXX That thing also need some Sega Saturn, 3DO, Sega Dreamcast, PlayStation 2, and GameCube support before I would think of buying it. As much as I like some of the Sega CD, Turbo Grafx-CD, MS-DOS, and PlayStation library, I just need me some Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, Tales of Symphonia, and F-Zero GX loves more.
@retro_player_22 Well, they do seem to have plans towards that end in a future version, but not in this one, due to costs and a couple of other factors.
Like others have said and I don't even have a Switch yet all these mini console games should be going on VC PSN or XBL depending on licencing of course
I bought Generations immediately but disconnected in within 3 days due to the poor emulation with most of the games. I was very disappointed- I hope they fix this for this launch and I will be more hesitant until I see positive feedback. 90 games is great but what’s the point if the emulation is off?
If the emulation is really good this is an almost must buy.
A long list of great games is useless when they all run terribly because of bad emulation.
@retro_player_22 @ThanosReXXX
I don't think the patents have even expired on half those things yet. You'll be waiting a while if that's the case.
SEGA should learn a bit from CAPCOM. Imagine a Sega Console supporting SD card and an eShop filled with SEGA's biggest hits from forever, also supporting indies? Yeh yeh, I know it's a futile dream lol
That Guts Man theme sounds like ass.
Another plug and play? No thanks.
@MattFox Capcom doesn't make consoles though.
Eh...I'll stick with my retropie.
@SmaMan Well, that's their problem, not mine. And they first have to release this version, which is still not fully funded, so it might not be released at all.
But if it does, by the time a second version releases that does support later consoles, they will more than likely take care of all the legal stuff connected to it. And remember: this only plays original discs, so it's not like they're breaking any laws by pirating games or anything.
The Data East Collection was great (forgetting what system it was released on .. ps2 and gc?) and the capcom classics collection 1 and 2 were AMAZING (i thought anyway). Collecting all these advanced plug and play systems gets really old really fast, and such a waste of space and plastic. I did find my Genesis mini the other day and hooked up and the emulation is HORRIBLE (the sound is horrible, but the play is okay) but it only had 6 games on it, but it's so cute an adorable and reminds me of the mini nes and snes's. I really want a SNES mini now, what are the chances in North America?
Meanwhile these are the kind of classics that the Switch SHOULD be getting! Hell even PS4 and Xbox would be nice!! Cmon Capcom!!
@NintendoRob1977 Data East Collection was on the wii. Would love to see that again!! 😃
Yeah and I bet the emulation is gonna suck like the last console that tried this
@retro_player_22 Nice way to intentionally miss my point lol
Hell yeah! This looks way more appealing to me then Nintendo's mini consoles. I hope Black Tiger, Magic Sword and Willow make it on there.
@MattFox So what console (which you clearly state Sega should learn from) did Capcom make that support SD Card and had a store for classic and indies games cause I want to know. I like to buy one and since you're the only one that mentions it, just want to know if it's for real. You put Capcom and console in the same paragraph so speak.
If Konami was able to release its Beat em Ups like that then I would consider it. The remotes seem a problem though.
I backed the Retro Dreamcade on Kickstarter. Users have the ability to add way more consoles and titles than this and the casing is prettier to boot, but if you insist on going legit, this is a nice option.
This is a good idea; including Street Fighter 2010 (Salty Mecha Ken edition) instead of Breath of Fire was a bad idea.
Just look at it, ugly, cheap rubbish. Good lineup of games albeit ones you can play in plenty of other places. It also depends on if they act ually get the emulation of the games right in the first place. AVOID.
Why do they need 2 versions of strider. I hope they don't do that with more games, it just seems like a lazy way to fill out the line up.
I'd rather have Crudebuster instead of the NES and SNES games, but this is great. Sure, I'd like these on eShop, but Capcom and Data East have some great games between them.
@SteamedSquid: That's from one of the Mega Man arcade games; I forget which one. It's either from Power Battles, or Fighters. I think it's Power Battles, I think.
@Everyone_Else: I don't even own an Nes Mini, or SNes Mini, & I'm already kinda burnt out on the pre-installed mini-consoles. That's not saying they're bad, it's just saying they have become the current trend for distributing, & from a co.'s standpoint, making money, off retro titles.
Did they actively try to make it as ugly as possible?
Anyway, it has my attention.
While I usually LOVE retro games, I'm getting a bit fed up of these machines intended to emulate classic games. They were a neat distraction at first, but they're becoming a nuisance for me personally.
The console looks a bit naff and the controllers have shoulder buttons? If this is supposed to be arcade focused why shoulder buttons?? How many arcades had shoulder buttons???
6 face buttons would have been the best option, I would have liked sticks over pads but I understand that would probably add £40 and they still wouldnt be very good.
bloody shoulder buttons.... I ask you.... Why!!
walk's off shaking head, still muttering about shoulder buttons
Still hoping this gets some decent reviews
Wonder when the release date will be🤔
