Re: Indie Developer Shares "Bad News" About Publishing On Switch, After Pitching His Game To Nintendo

AceDefective

Not to be too mean, but to also be a little blunt: what he was trying to pitch to Nintendo was definitely a "first game maker game" kind of project.
It looks more like it belongs in a game jam for newer, younger devs, rather than being a console or even lower end commercial release. I can see why he was rejected but rather than take it too hard, I'd prefer to see him keep at it and make something more commercial looking next time.
Gotta learn to crawl before you walk and all that.

Re: Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 Design Director Laughs Off Question About Switch Release

AceDefective

This isn't suprising when you take into consideration the game is being made on much stronger hardware than the Switch, and is probably too far along to just add an SKU on top or straight up make a new game given the hardware difference.
Given CoD's yearly release schedule, it may be more likely to see a new entry head to Switch next year, assuming if Activision sees the investment as worthy enough and they already have a dev kit on hand.

Re: Poll: One Week On - How Do You Feel About the Nintendo Switch?

AceDefective

It honestly feels super nice, and is overall pretty well designed.
My only real qualms with the system right now are really: the lack of games (which will improve overtime logically but I wish there was really was more at launch at least in terms of VC), cartridge slot could use some work, under stocking on accessories, an internet browser even if I honestly don't need it, the UI being oddly silent, and friend codes (screw 'em they're unwieldy and annoying).
The fact most of those problems are fixable, this isn't too bad all around. I'll admit I was huge grump during the NX saga (and I apologize), but I really like the Switch. Let's hope that this can avoid the Wii U's overall sad fate (though this seems like we're mostly clear of that iceberg already, but who knows).

Re: Western Localisation Of Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE Features Costume And Age Changes

AceDefective

I'll admit I don't usually care about localisation changes all that much tbh I'm used to the reality that a localized product will never be 100% the same as the original version and I'm honestly okay with that. Costumes and age changes don't bug as long as the change didn't horrifically effect other important details, but cutting meaningful content (i.e. dungeons, weapons, playable characters, character creator aspects) is sort of were I draw the line.
Don't know what's up with NoA as of late, but their localizing is getting a bit questionable as of late.

Re: Rumour: EA And Nintendo Looking To Rekindle "Unprecedented Partnership" On NX

AceDefective

@arnoldlayne83 The Vita has only Japanese games and indies to fall back on, hence why more get localized on that platform and the PS4 is the PS4, you'd be crazy to not localize.

I'm meh on EA, so I don't really care if the deal falls through or not. I am, however, into getting more games filling out the NX library if they intend to create a successful whatever-it-is.

Re: Video: Take a Look at More Twilight Princess HD Gameplay And Features

AceDefective

@zool Keep in mind that number of people who bought WWHD, how many of those people did you think actually owned the original version before buying the HD version? That is what I'm trying to get across, some people are buying this as a way to get into TP, so why not get the cleaner HD version with Hero Mode, gyroscope controls, and GamePad functionality? I understand not being sold on the product, but you shouldn't confuse your perspective as the main one. On a side note I don't know where you got the idea I was implying everyone who owned a Wii U was going to buy this game though....

Re: Video: Take a Look at More Twilight Princess HD Gameplay And Features

AceDefective

@zool Out of the millions of people who own Wii Us, I doubt all or half as many them have actually played the original TP.
That's not even taking into account the amount of people who probably had either the Wii or GC versions at one point, got rid of it and want to play it again, or the double (or tipple) dippers who want the newer stuff or HD, or the self proclaimed casual gamers who just want to see what Zelda is about.

Re: Video: Take a Look at More Twilight Princess HD Gameplay And Features

AceDefective

@zool You assume everyone who thinks like you is the majority, when in acuality you're honestly the minority.
Most people buying this will probably not have either of the originals, and even then the added content is supposed to make this version the superior version. It's ok to not like the game, really. Like I'm not buying this, because I have the GC version, but I know I'm not the complete target for this.

Re: Review: Bigley's Revenge (Wii U eShop)

AceDefective

inb4 "you don't get the joke!"
The thing about satire/joke software is they have to be funny in the first place or otherwise they're just shovelware and yes I understand humor is subjective.
Saddest (or best, depending on your perspective) part about memes based humor is that stuff is only really funny as long as people remember it being funny. Give it a few years and Bigley will be deader than sin.

Re: Feature: The Twilight Princess HD Fan Project That's Taking On Nintendo At Its Own Game

AceDefective

@donniedarkenson Welcome to game development, where things always go wrong and nothing is guaranteed to look like the unoptimized tech demo running simpler less complex code and has the advantage on being shown in incoherent pieces that have less stuff to drag it down.
Tech demos showcase what the system could do, but making full games out of them can be problematic when the specs needed to maintain a game like that are out of reach.

Re: Feature: The Twilight Princess HD Fan Project That's Taking On Nintendo At Its Own Game

AceDefective

I would be fine with this existing if this comment section didn't create such a negative taste in my mouth. I have the same problem with Project M really, less the product being a thing and more some of the people supporting it. I get the official product doesn't quite make you happy, but the mod is far different then what the official content set out to do. TPHD is not just a graphic retool, it's also going to have gameplay refinements that personally interest me more.
Also the Zelda E3 Tech demo bit also irks me, its consumer ignorance at its finest. Tech demos exist to show off what a system can do, and should never and I repeat never be expected to be a what a final product should look like. That Zelda demo was nothing more than a bunch of shiny models, animations and fancy lighting without any of the other stuff needed for a full game running in the background.

Re: Editorial: It's Not Fun to Criticise Nintendo Games, But It's Been Unavoidable in 2015

AceDefective

Fanboyism is blinding...
Respecting other people's viewpoints and opinions is a basic part of being a functional human being, and as much as I don't enjoy things I liked being harshly criticized I still have to take it in stride. It's not your fault Thomas, Nintendo had to put something out this year and unfortunately not all of it was up to Nintendo's own standards. 2015 was definitely a filler year for Nintendo aside from a few titles.

Re: Shigesato Itoi Explains, Once Again, Why Mother 4 is "Totally Impossible"

AceDefective

Mother 3 as an ending makes sense. I'd rather see something die of its own will, then get dragged and stained by a sequel that could miss what made the originals so good in the first place.
Not saying Nintendo or someone else would make a bad sequel, I'm just saying it could lack the soul the older entires had.
Besides, why do people even want a Mother 4 anyway?

Re: Talking Point: The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD Would be No Surprise, as Nostalgia Rules for Nintendo

AceDefective

Probably won't go for TPHD as like WWHD I already have the GC versions and I'm fine with that.
Still, I hope its not like FFX HD or FF Type 0 HD where they updated some models and textures but left a crap ton of other stuff alone leading to some pretty jarring quality difference (the player characters in Type 0 looked like they were from a PS3 game... while everything and everyone else was ported over blatantly from the PSP game, with the same applying to X HD).

Re: Proof of Functioning Wii U Emulator, Cemu, Emerges Online

AceDefective

@wazlon Creating emulators has less to do with sales and more to do with being able to replay (theoretically anyway) the exclusive library if and when the systems and games become unavailable reasonably legally.
Half the reason the (original) Xbox emulator was never finished was because the library was deemed not worth the trouble asmuch of it were mulitplats or also on PC.

Re: The Pokémon Company Withdraws Settlement in Lawsuit Over Copyright Infringement

AceDefective

@duffmmann He never asked for permission in the first place, and even then what you said they could do still has negative effects.
"Oh, TPC sponsored this event the one time because this guy got caught doing it. I'll do the same and they'll have to sponsor my thing too or else I can take them to court!"
Some lawyers are crafty enough to think of what I just said, and that'll create even more problems.

Re: Miyamoto and Tezuka Discuss the Difficulties of Balancing Games for Players of All Skill Levels

AceDefective

Hand holding is a problem in a lot of newer games, and Nintendo is no exception.
Games are getting more and more "complicated" and the idea of plopping the player down into the game to figure things out nowadays is becoming uncommon. Which I can kind of understand.
During the NES days you had only 2 real buttons and a D-Pad. Even if the game explained nothing, you'd likely figure out how to play it by pressing every button in combination with each other. Compare to now where controllers have an up most of 10 buttons not including motion controls, and control systems themselves getting more and more complicated due to modern game design.
Asking any player to figure it by themselves completely is asking for them to rage quit.
That being said, there is no reason why you can't make a game fairly challenging for both new and old players. "Getting good" should be the end goal of any player regardless of skill level, so the idea of solving things for them or making them completely invincible is utterly insulting. They're not improving at the game, they're reveling in their failures to do so and the game is letting them win. Not every player is good at every game, I know, but sometimes you just gotta rise to the challenge and do your best.

Re: The Pokémon Company Sues Fan for Copyright Infringement, Demands $4,000 in Damages

AceDefective

@BacktoNarnia Nintendo =/= The Pokemon Company
You'd be surprised how little control Nintendo even has over the Pokemon brand as whole.
Asking for money when using other people's IPs is a BIG no no, regardless of circumstance. This was very scummy thing to do (suing the guy, that is), but this the reality people need to deal with. Not every company cares that you're doing something out of love, when money gets involved (either you gaining money via use of their IP or you costing them money), things always get ugly.

Re: Preview: Fabulous Fashion and Questionable Game Design in The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes

AceDefective

@LilC ... You do know the expectations for a multiplayer shooter and a ZELDA game are completely different, right?
Splatoon and Devil's Third's SP campaign are standard fare for the genre, but the outrage at this game's lackluster SP when compared to Four Swords Anniversary and Four Swords Adventures are completely justified.
Plus, even the online MP looks pretty bare which is less acceptable for a Multiplayer game

Re: Video Game Voice Actors Contemplate Strike Action Over Pay and Conditions

AceDefective

I'm noticing a lot people here don't seem to recognize how hard VAing actually is.
You can spend up to multiple hours in a hot, humid room trying to keep a specific type voice that can really hurt to do or even cause actual physical harm, only to be paid hella poorly. Not to mention the training to gain control a huge level of control over your vocal range and learning how to act through voice alone while maintaining that tone.
Voice acting (much like anything else ever) sounds easier than it actually is.
That being said though, I don't think they really deserve a cut of the profits for such a smaller portion of a ordeal that is game development.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Tackles Metroid Prime: Federation Force and amiibo Criticism

AceDefective

Reggie the PR man.
I like to remind people that NoA doesn't do any developing at this moment, nor can Reggie greenlight games "like that".
All Reggie can do/does is be the head rep for Nintendo in the US, and our bridge to NoJ. He can suggest sure, but that's all he can really do.
Right now, he's in damage control mode trying to kill the (immature) rioting and relieve the fans' worries with whatever he's allowed to say atm.

Also, knowing what we want != actually getting it.
Keep that in mind.

Re: Nintendo Begins Takedown Proceedings on Super Mario 64 HD Fan Project

AceDefective

Sheesh, everyone is acting like the creator is committed a huge crime or something.
Yeah, the game was meant to be a tech demo, but when you advertise it as an HD remake of SM64 using Galaxy assets... oh boy legal trouble.
As a developer myself, I'll admit to borrowing assets for temporary purposes and nothing more. I ain't got an infinite amount of time nor infinite amount of skill to be making new art/music/sounds every time time I want to test a new idea/mechanic.* Granted, I'm not going to refer to my character action combat system tech demo as a "Bayonetta remake" or something though some people who would probably skim through my long blog post declaring what is and call that anyway.
(No, the last thing I mentioned remake doesn't exist, don't bother looking it up.)

*EDIT: Throwing in this disclaimer that I do indeed replace the assets in the finalization process though.
