In the pre-Super Smash Bros. for Wii U stage, before the Wii U GameCube Controller Adapter was revealed, third-party accessory company PDP turned the heads of Smash Bros. veterans by announcing a Fight Pad that'd mimic the iconic GameCube controller. Subsequent releases have brought plenty of competition, but PDP hasn't been put off from releasing a whole load of officially licensed pads to celebrate various franchises.
Now we know that it's planning a controller to celebrate Mario's 30th Anniversary this year, though it's doing so with a 'Metal Mario' pad, which is relevant albeit not quite tapping into the original Super Mario Bros. on NES. Oh, and it's really shiny.
As with its previous iterations of this wired fight pad, this is effectively a Wii Classic Controller, so needs to be plugged into a Wii Remote and will work with plenty of games across both the Wii and Wii U.
Let us know what you think of this design - we have a suspicion that it could be a bit of a fingerprint magnet...

If it was a Hori made pad I'd consider getting this
Looks really nice, though I'm not sure if I'll get one since I already own a Classic Controller and I recently bought a Gamecube adapter from the convention I went to last weekend.
Maybe it's metal to represent the metallic texture of the green pipes Mario has to go through...?
I've seen PDP GC controllers in stores, but I haven't had a chance to pick up one yet.
Question: Do these work with Gamecube games, if I played a Gamecube game on my Wii?
@nintendawesome They're classic controllers made to look like GC controllers.
So unfortunately no.
How do you get one? Send me a tweet @Jonah Sprick. Thank you.
Hori makes good looking GC pads. This company... does not.
What's next, the brightest GCN controller. (so bright that the controller would blind you if you look at it directly, lol)
I still want to pick up that beautiful Samus PDP controller.
Actually, I just got a Samus one! Pretty good controllers, but they smell weird when you unbox them.
The shiny metal reminds me that I really think silver Mario amiibo should unlock silver paint color in Splatoon. And I suppose gold Mario unlock gold paint for the 3 people who have 1.
Guess it's going to be a long interesting summer of Splatoon patches. And maybe some E3 surprises as well.
Oh wait, this isn't a Splatoon thread?
Aside from the dreadful wannabe fake triggers, the awkward circular depression with a sticker on the bottom of the controller under the d-pad, and me not being that much of a fan of assymetrical sticks, I actually really like these controllers. While Hori's controller looks and probably feels way more faithful to the original, I like how these have an actual full-sized right stick.
I'll be getting a Pikachu Hori controller next though. If I get the desire to actually play my Wii U again that is.
If the analog sticks are decent and so is the d-pad, I think I'd enjoy this controller just fine. Looks pretty good.
Probably isnt as durable as metal mario or the original controllers.
Might break the moment it touches the floor...
And by Metal Mario, they mean the seperate character itself, right?
I really want to collect these controllers but they don't have rumble, and cannot be used as pro controllers :/
Still thinking of picking a couple up tho, I love the different designs
Oh god, the fingerprints are gonna stick out like a sore thumb on that one...
@WaveBoy agree
@WaddleDeeWeegee Aww lucky! It seems pretty hit-or-miss though, with most people. Let me know how it works out for you!
Boy, I can't wait for the Pink Gold Peach one!
It would have been cool if it was in the colour scheme of Mario from Mario 1. You know, the Brown overalls and Red top. Also, how about a Green and White one for Luigi.
@MitchVogel XD Wouldn't surprise me...
Wish these were official Nintendo controllers.. or at least Hori
Wish these were official Nintendo controllers.. or at least Hori
That is the most hideous controller I've ever seen.
And I must have it.
I actually used to have something similar to this back in the day. I had a shiny gold Nintendo 64 controller and still do, but the problem was that the paint faded way too easily so it is only half gold now. I'm sure these wouldn't do the same thing, it's just a memory of mine.
Seems like it would become destroyed in smudges and finger prints which I hate. I would love the Samus controller. I bought the Yoshi one because I only had Wii controllers so it was nice to let player 2 use a more traditional controller. It also feels much nicer to use for some of my old Wii games eg, resident evil 1 port. I would recommend for casual use.
I can't believe NLife doesn't know how to unlock Metal Mario in Super Mario Bros
I have the two Hori fight pads (Mario and Luigi) and they are great. The reviews that I read indicated that the PDP ones were not as well built as the Hori ones. However, I would consider picking this up if I ever come across one.
On a different subject, why does Japan have six Mario themed Wii-motes and we only have three in North America?!? I want that Toad Wii-mote. I am sure that I will eventually break down and import one on EBay. However, it would be nice if Nintendo of America would be more proactive about bringing cool products like that to the West.
MUST HAVE IT NOW!
P.S While we are talking about Mario's 30th anniversary ...
I am personally hoping that Nintendo will announce plans to celebrate the anniversary at E3. I am personally hoping for an announcement of Super Mario 3D Land 2 on the 3DS.
Do not buy any PDP controller. They are horrible. I got one for Smash and returned it the next day. They feel so cheap and the buttons stick.
I quit buying third party controllers after me and.several friends went.through probably 4 GC controllers, though those were Pelican. I see this is a classic controller really anyway. .... so they never said it's not actual Metal right? That would be quite interesting.
My Link one is pretty good. My friend and I complain most about the D-PAD. First game I tested it on was Star Fox 64.
Might pass on this one. If it was gold to match my Zelda remote, nun-chuck and classic pro controller... then maybe.
This GC controller design sucks, it is too big, awkward, and the buttons stick. Don't buy, get the originals. (Unless you have big hands)
@MitchVogel
I would buy the crap out of Pink Gold Peach controller.
@Azikira It's pretty good. The control sticks feel a bit weird, and a really strange smell is on it when you unbox. But I use it in Smash and Xenoblade Chronicles, and it works perfectly.
