If any company is currently the leading light in prioritising enjoyable gameplay over pushing technology it's Nintendo. A look at the current and upcoming sleight of games re-affirms that clever ideas, established gameplay and colourful visuals are the priority - in most cases - above pushing boundaries.
Of course, that's not always the case, and Nintendo has in the past stretched its hardware to achieve improbable results. That seems to be the intention with this apparent prototype - if it's real - which is a simple experiment in a different camera angle and 3D visuals to push the Game Boy Advance to its limits. Mario Kart XXL - a limited build supposedly brought together by Similis - showcases dual mode-7 layering; it may look slightly messy and not particularly fun to play, but on a technical level was certainly impressive for the Game Boy Advance.
It's intriguing to see, though we're not surprised that Nintendo has stuck with its traditional approach to Mario Kart. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean it's a good idea.

I remember my time with my family's Gamecube. Good times. It was one of the last home consoles I really dedicated time to playing, before I got bored of them.
@DiscoGentleman I know. It's just seeing the Gamecube for a bit brought back some nostalgia and memories.
This looks to have some serious potential. I'm surprised they didn't take it further or use it for something else. Personally I couldn't stand Super Circuit.
I would say it looks legit, but the ugly title screen and its Comic Sans tell me otherwise. The fact that the "demo" uses assets from Super Circuit tells me it's either an early beta of that game or a fan-made project and the creator is trollin'.
@aromaiden my favorite console too (dunno if you implied that) and also the first just because I played games on PC long before.
Also enjoyed some awesome times with my family on that machine, before interests took us in other directions sadly.
this is weird

Wise words.
Looks more like a fan game.
@DarthNocturnal me too, super circuit looks absolutely awful and this at least looks kinda decent I guess?
Looks like some kind of unlicensed fan game, like Pokemon 4 in 1.
I was quite distracted by that constant rattling noise in the background, wonder what that was. At first I thought it was someone typing on a keyboard, but that wasn't quite it, I think. Either way, it was VERY irritating.
It would have been better if he had turned up the volume on the TV to let us also hear the game. I also wonder why he used analog controls, instead of the normal directional controls that you would use for a Game Boy Advance game.
And he also apparently doesn't know how to use analog controls: you don't flip the stick and you don't press it all the way in one direction unless you have to; it's not a digital joystick.
The game could be legit, though. I don't put much stock in things that seem to be out of place in an early concept/demo version, so letter types and so on could easily be replaced in any final version. These could have just been place holders, that are used in almost any game during development.
@Aromaiden I don't mean to be rude (and I surely don't want you to leave), but if consoles are boring for you, what are you doing on Nintendolife?
@DarthNocturnal I haven't played Super Circuit (only saw some videos), but this MK XXL looks really afwul (also, the cover is a rip-off from Doubledash). So no, I'd prefer Super Circuit, at least that one looks decent.
@Aromaiden Aw my bad, I overlooked the term "home" and thought you meant consoles in general.
But why did you get bored of them (or more precisely, what was the cause)?
That arrow animation is from Uniracers! Looks like a homebrew to me.
Why would a pre-development prototype have a rendered title screen? With what looks like double dash renders? I'm calling homebrew, impressive homebrew mind.
Also, am I the only one who thinks super circuit is awesome?
Given that the Double Dash title screen immediately dates it as post 2003 - (2 years after the release of Super Circuit) and Nintendo have never made two MK games for the same system...
Why would a game supposedly being designed by Nintendo in house for the GBA (or perhaps the future DS) be encased in a Game Boy Color cartridge?
Is someone using an adding machine in the background?
What's the XXL stand for?
@Iggly My thoughts exactly.
@TheRealThanos
I'm guessing this GameCube is giving out, the drive is most likely repaired or ready to break as the disc to run GBA Player is needed just to run that GBA cart.
@sevex I knew I had seen that arrow someplace before, you just saved me a random headache trying to figure out what it was. I Agree about it likely being some fan homebrew cart as well, but if so, it is pretty impressive. The GBA was a 32 bit system after all, its not crazy to think camera sweeps like that were possible in a racing game.
Thats a GBC cartridge running Advance like graphics.
I don't see what's so bad about this. If it was faster, and with more characters this could have been fun. After all, its just a prototype. On the other hand: The Double Dash-like title screen looks fishy!
If this really was a demo or prototype Nintendo wouldn't have bothered to photoshop the Double Dash artwork in order to remove the characters on the back of the karts. Plus the nasty font and animated arrow all point (pun intended) to this just being a clever hack. Whether or not this is actually running on the GBA is also a matter for contention.
What I'm trying to say is I'm not convinced.
@DinoFett That could actually be it, thanks! Makes me wonder why I didn't think of it, since I also have the Game Boy player. It's probably because I haven't used that in ages...
@DarthNocturnal (raises hand) i can't stand super circuit, but i like the remade courses from it.

Wow, that looks like a dehumidifier. Things have changed for the better. http://5starblog.com/?s=Nintendo
This looks incredibly fake as a leak.
Still, looks interesting. I would be more interested if I saw this running on an actual GBA rather than a GameCube.
Obviously not a official Nintendo prototype.
So he inserts a GBC cart and plays a GBA game with DS graphics. MIND BLOWN.
still would like to see more videos of this game
