Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

@ModdedInkling

My point was that for digital only gamers, most games will be installed on the slower Micro SD cards by necessity because the internal storage is only 32 GB. Not that the memory will get slower as it fills...

Regarding SD card speeds, I stand corrected. Back in 2017 the game cards were quicker than Micro SD cards but that has changed with the later versions.

@ModdedInkling

'One more pro with digital - Better performance. The loading times are much faster on SSD and microSD than they are on the Game Cards.'

-That's not quite true, at least as far as the Switch is concerned.

The loading speed 'hierarchy' is actually; Internal memory>Game cards>Micro SD

So in most cases physical will be quicker as the Switch's internal memory is pretty small.

Re: Switch Online Now Has Over 36 Million Subs, Nintendo Says It Will Continue To Improve Expansion Pack Tier

6thHorizon

36 million means a less than 1/3 attach rate which is pretty low. It's not really the resounding success that it's purported to be IMO.
Personally I find even the basic NSO difficult to justify as I just want to play MK8 online, everything else is of no interest at all.
I'm sure there are plenty of others in the same boat which would go some way to explaining the low adoption rate.

Re: Poll: Is The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Good Enough Value Yet?

6thHorizon

NSO and the Expansion are only good value if you want everything they offer. If you only want parts they are very difficult to justify.

Personally I am still reeling from having pay just to play 2 games that I bought at retail online. I have no interest in playing SNES games that I played 30 years ago, so even the base service feels like a rip off to me.

Having a Steam Deck has further highlighted how far off the mark Nintendo are; Free online, free cloud saves, 14 day right to a refund on downloaded games, security of your games library into the future, the list goes on...

Re: Video: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Wave 2 DLC Reveal - Here's What We Thought

6thHorizon

The lack of proper textures really grates with me, they almost look like higher poly N64 era tracks. Something's wrong when the same tracks on 3DS have better textures!
I was hoping for some improvement in Wave 2 but instead it's convinced me not to pay extra. I'm perfectly happy playing online for free as that's the main way I play MK anyway.

Re: Random: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Mod Updates Toad Circuit Grass

6thHorizon

I just booted up Mario Kart 7 on 3DS (released in 2011!) to check if Toad Circuit really looked as good as I remember. All of the grass and sand has nice looking textures.
Compare this to the Switch version that has NO TEXTURE at all. On a vastly superior piece of hardware, 11 years later.
At this point I can't believe there are still people defending Nintendo over the laziness of these new tracks.

@sanderev

You hit the nail on the head I think. They created drama/ hype by giving a controversial review score, then made videos explaining their own controversy lol
Looking at the rest of the recent 'news' on this site I guess its been very slow lately and therefore they needed some clicks.
I'm far from a Nintendo fanboy but I've been loving Switch Sports personally-25 hours playtime in 11 days says it all...definite 7 or 8/10 in reality.

Re: Looks Like Some People In The West Are Playing The Mario Kart 8 DLC Early

@romanista

My criticism wasn’t about the graphics, they do look better than expected.
Navigating the cars at the end of the lap took fair amount of skill/ judgement/ luck that now just isn’t required. The nature of the track has been changed because part of what made it a classic has been removed.
Surely it wouldn’t have been that much effort to upscale the MK7 model instead?

Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

6thHorizon

I'm the opposite of many on here it seems and resent paying Nintendo just to play ONE game online.
I have zero interest in any of the other stuff having grown up with the SNES and bought all the games I wanted back in 90's.
The whole problem with bundling a load of disparate things together is that it tends to please nobody but the service provider itself.

Re: Soapbox: NSO Isn't Game Pass, But Nintendo Is Learning The Benefits Of Subscription Models

6thHorizon

@MS7000
You are absolutely right on this; subscription models are great for businesses but not for consumers.
This is why media companies are so enthusiastic and slowly taking away the option to own anything at all. They can produce a long list of all the things that you get (but don't really want) and the best bit (for them) is that you are really just renting everything.
'Why don't they offer the choice?' answers itself once you realise what's really going on.
I don't buy into the current conventional wisdom that everything is going that way anyway and therefore we should just accept it.

Re: Nintendo Loses German Court Appeal Over Switch eShop Pre-Order Cancellations

6thHorizon

The problems with the e-shop reach far beyond pre-orders.

If I buy a physical game (in the UK at least) it's the law that I can return the game within 14 days and get a full refund (providing it is 'unused'). Most retailers offer considerably more than this; Game offer 28 days for example.

On the e-shop I can't get a refund for a change of mind at all- even an hour after the purchase as far as I am aware. You essentially waive your consumer rights entirely as part of the terms of sale on the e-shop.

Based on my own personal experience, Nintendo's attitude to its consumers is pretty awful by any measure.
