Re: The Switch Is Here To Stay, Says Nintendo Boss Shuntaro Furukawa

6thHorizon

I do take @TheWingedAvenger's point though. The difference seems to get more and more incremental with each generation.
Ok; 4k IS better than 1080p, 120 fps IS better than 60 fps etc etc, but these are hardly life-changing developments at this point.
Most essential games on the PS5 are available more cheaply at slightly inferior resolution on PS4 already.
The main reason to upgrade to the next generation these days is when the older consoles stop getting supported with the latest games.

Re: Nintendo Says It's Continuously Working On Improving The Switch Joy-Con

6thHorizon

That's the admission right there of what most people have known for couple of years now- the JoyCons were not fit for purpose at launch.
It pains me to say but I've really started to dislike Nintendo as a company, what with things like the cash grab that was the limited time release of 3D All-stars for example as well.
Compare this to Steam's transparency by producing things like official teardowns of the Deck and it's night and day.

Re: How To Use Bluetooth Headphones On Switch - Connect AirPods To Nintendo Switch

6thHorizon

Just tried this out with a pro controller and BT headphones and it's introduced some really nasty input latency with the controller input. I couldn't believe quite how bad it was. As soon as I went back to wired headphones the input latency was gone.
There's no way I can play competitively online with that setup so I guess it's back to sitting uncomfortably close to the screen and Switch for me...

Re: Round Up: First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck - How Does It Compare To Switch?

6thHorizon

Once I get my Steam Deck, every game that's available on Switch and SD I'll get on the SD; far superior versions for half the price AND I'll be able to play them on any PC in the future.
Anyone arguing that the Deck is not competition is deluded. This is a properly disruptive device and if Steam manages to handle the launch well, it could have a big hit on it's hands.
It's the first hardware I've been excited about for years and as a Nintendo fan, I really hope it ends their complacency and forces them to take some risks again.

Re: Valve Responds To 'Switch Vs Steam Deck' Comparisons, Insists It's "Going After" A Different Audience

6thHorizon

@nhSnork

Yes you're right to an extent, I've not played PC games for years and always found the cost of a gaming setup prohibitively expensive.

That's why the Steam Deck is so appealing to me: relatively affordable (the memory is micro SD upgradable), portable and seems to be capable of playing everything that I've been missing and without being compromised versions too.

Re: Valve Responds To 'Switch Vs Steam Deck' Comparisons, Insists It's "Going After" A Different Audience

6thHorizon

I don't buy that this is not competing with the Switch personally.

One of the best things about Switch has been that so many multi platform games have been ported over- to be honest it's made up for the lacklustre first party output from Nintendo these last few years.

Some of my most played games have been things like Witcher 3 and Wolfenstein 2 and I even had my eyes open for a big price drop on the cloud games like Control and Hitman 3.

Now that there is a dockable handheld that is capable of playing uncompromised versions of these games, I really think it cancels out a major USP that the Switch once had.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

@Damo

It was pretty clear in my response to @johnvboy's comment- I even copied and pasted his quote from the article into my reply!

The title and subtitle of the article are also misleading because of the over simplification of the maths involved.

The implication being that Nintendo is making $40 more per unit because it 'only' costs $10 more in components yet charges $50 extra per Switch OLED.

Anyone that knows anything about retail markup or any kind of design, development and manufacturing and is being honest with themselves knows that this over simplification is incorrect.

I get that you need to create compelling content- clicks are the bread and butter of your business model and I'm not even knocking the article as such.

I just felt that the reality of the maths involved needed some clarification. Going by the comments here it seems quite a few others did too.

At the end of the day the article did well anyway didn't it?- 125 comments and counting is a decent success

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

@johnvboy

" The Switch is already making a profit, so this will only further increase Nintendo's profit margins if it is successful. Bloomberg reached out to a Nintendo spokesperson about the price breakdown and sure enough, they declined to comment."

'Bits like this make me feel the purpose of this article is not as innocent as you are making out...'

  • You are absolutely right, of course!

It's clickbait at worst and tabloidy at best

I know websites need to make money somehow too, but it's a bit hypocritical to (unfairly) imply shady business practice when the article itself could arguably be accused of the same thing by being misleading and disingenuous.

Re: Switch OLED Upgrades Reportedly Cost Nintendo "Around $10 More Per Unit"

6thHorizon

The shock and horror this 'revelation' has caused is staggering. Retail usually commands around a 50% markup alone. That means if a company is lucky enough to be an authorized retailer for Nintendo (or anyone else) the wholesale price is about half the price to the end consumer. This in addition to all the costs others here have mentioned like R+D and it's actually surprising that the OLED costs so little over the standard switch.

@JasmineDragon
Your reply to me quoted another article too (which you have now edited!), which was as far as I read because you were already way off the mark.
What are you trying to achieve exactly? Do you have nothing better to do than to try to paint me as a bigot?
I stand by original comment which asked for politics to be kept out of a video game enthusiasts website. It is a trend that I have noticed over the last couple of years at it happens.
As much as you want it, I am not the bogeyman you are trying to make me out to be; I just want to read about Nintendo without a certain political slant being forced upon me.
I'd guess that most readers here do too, including the minority groups that you think you are fighting for the rights of but who I'd imagine mostly just want to enjoy their video games.
