@roboshort
I wasn't saying that any of them were bad games, my point was that they were disappointing.
The games you listed are either remakes or a slightly updated version of a decades old idea.
I miss the Nintendo that genuinely tried to push the envelope with its big releases. There was nothing that made me go 'wow that's a great idea, can't wait to play it'. Everything was just tapping into nostalgia to me.
Creatively Nintendo seem to have become quite stagnant and that's a bad thing for the industry in general.
Nintendo's presentation overall was pretty disappointing. I really didn't understand the positive spin put on it by this site in particular. There were no AAA big hitters announced; a 2d Metroid and WarioWare just doesn't cut it I'm afraid. I bought my Switch for more that this.
@RupeeClock
Seem to remember a video comparing external vs internal vs cartridge a year or so ago.
I think that the result was Internal storage> Cartridge> External Storage.
Didn't even read the article but having experienced most consoles since the early 80's I'd argue that the current generation is more of a nadir than a golden age.
I say save Mario Kart X (If you include the smartphone one) for the next generation. You'd just end up fragmenting the user base if you released a sequel now. Some more of the classic tracks like in MK7 would make great DLC to keep 8 fresh for a few more years.
I predict that digital sales will tail off now as the world continues to open up. I for one bought several games digitally during the lockdowns that I wouldn't have normally but that doesn't mean that my habits have changed for good. The resale value alone means that physical will always make more sense, even if you're not a collector or that fussed about actually holding something you paid £50 for in your hands.
I'd have been happier if they'd dropped all the anniversary stuff and just put the resource into an Odyssey 2. That would have been a much more fitting celebration IMO.
Quite right too. I've just gone to dislike it myself. I've grudgingly bought 2 subscriptions for 3 months over the last year for some entertainment during the lock downs. Even then I've made sure to get the cheapest code possible on Shop-to and turned off auto renew straight away. No way I'm paying over the odds for NSO.
Nice to see a Nintendo Life scribe saying what many fans are feeling instead of compiling lists of ports the Switch didn't get yet- yaaaawn.
Seriously, well done for calling out the distinct lack of AAA content from Nintendo on Switch.
While some of the third party ports have been nice to have, it's not what I bought my Switch for.
What have the devs been doing for the past 4 years?!
I'm instinctively anti-regulation but I really think this is a good idea. It preys on impressionable kids in their formative years and is one of the less savoury developments in recent years.
To all those saying that this was the only Zelda game where Link is a righty; sorry to be a pedant but Twilight Princess on Wii was mirrored to make him right handed too- again for the motion controls.
If Nintendo went back on it now it would set a precedent that would be difficult to go back on- fans would feel that they could force Nintendo to do or not do things in the future. I'm not surprised it's going ahead as planned at all but Nintendo might not attempt the same kind of trick in the future.
I really didn't enjoy Breath of the Wild that much and was really excited when Skyward Sword was announced in the direct. I can't wait personally.
I missed proper temples in BotW and hear that SS has some great ones including one of the best in the series.
Believe it or not, not everyone has the same opinion on Zelda despite all of the white noise that the internet produces making it appear that way.
It's an absolutely valid observation but the problem is society-wide not just the video games industry.
The rise of social media in particular has propagated the issue and also means there is possibly no going back.
My solution is to be very selective about what and when I consume these things and even then with a healthy dose of skepticism. Many can't or don't want to though.
Of course the people actually creating the hype are making a living from it so trying to ask them nicely to rein it in is completely futile!
All I want is a proper first party Nintendo game built from the ground up. Is that too much to ask?! And no, another Splatoon and Mario Golf don't cut it. I never thought I would have been typing this about a Nintendo console, even during the Wii U era.
@Kirgo The 3D models like the cars and the boat itself I thought looked very poor and reminded me of that era. The resolution and lighting are obviously far better than back then.
Having played the short intro I was really disappointed with the level of the graphics in this. Sure, the resolution is high but the 3D models seemed very low poly and unrealistic (like PS2 basic). Really don't see why the Switch couldn't have had a proper port of this.
@Strumpan Thanks but downloading a client to enable you to play is not the same thing. Every other game on the list has required a dedicated team to work hard bringing the game to the Switch, so that we can own the game properly and play it natively. The inclusion of Hitman as a 'download' is insulting to them.
I see they've got Control discounted to £24.99 already, just a month or so after release, so I guess that most consumers aren't as easily duped as they'd hoped. Knock another tenner off to make it £14.99 (the actual value) and a few more might bite.
@HalBailman
Yes agree completely about Virtua Racing. There is a really simple pleasure to be had in improving your run each time. It rewards your time and effort and rarely, if ever, unfairly punishes you; if you fail it’s your fault.
For me the hallmarks of a good racing game are finely balanced controls, a requirement for precision and skill from the player and not getting cheaply punted off the track or somehow losing for no reason other than the AI deciding. Sure, you can save your boosts until the end but where’s the fun or satisfaction in that?
If I lose I want it to be because I wasn’t good enough. That way coming back the next time or the time after and winning is that much sweeter. Hotshot Racing denies the player most of these pleasures.
Even in Mario Kart, the more skillful and accomplished you become, the better your stats will be overall.
Having said all that though, local/online multiplayer is definitely better if you manage to find someone to play against.
This and Odyssey tie as the best Mario platformer for me whether 2D or 3D.
I recently played through Galaxy and Sunshine for the first time and while Galaxy in particular was great, it was at times missing the focus and distilled joy that 3D Land provides. Like others have said, the stereoscopic 3D removes the frustrations that crop up in other 3D platform games too.
I'd say that it's close to perfection and got me back into loving Nintendo again after over a decades hiatus.
@Clyde_Radcliffe The lobbies are almost always empty unfortunately. I've only had a handful of online races since it released and it is always with the same one other player, the rest are either AI or it's just one on one. It's a pity because playing against a real human negates the laughable AI of the single player modes. I really wanted to like this game but I actually wish I hadn't bought it. You'd be far better off buying Virtua Racing and Horizon Chase Turbo together and keeping the change.
@kingbk So Reggie single handedly created the Wii? I'll be respectful and give you a chance to back up what you are claiming with some facts or sources instead of laughing out loud at your assertion quite yet.
I've never understood all the interest in Reggie, he's just a Marketing Executive at the end of the day. Even now, having left Nintendo ages ago, we still hear far more about him and almost nothing about his replacement.
I hit the screen shot limits ages ago so that's a great update for me. Seriously though, without mentioning that F word again, having to scroll through every icon to find that cool indie game I think I downloaded a year ago is really tiresome and shouldn't have been a thing even in 2017.

Think I'll plump for the 3DS version with the superior and free online mode then.
