We've been wondering all month when Nintendo was going to reveal the 'Wave 2' DLC for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and it's now finally lifted the lid on the next batch of tracks.
For this next wave, we're getting the Turnip Cup and Propeller Cup. That's eight tracks all up, including one new one. Players can expect to race on classics such as Mario Circuit 3 and Kalimari Desert to more recent ones like Sydney Sprint and New York Minute. Last but not least there'll also be the new course, Sky-High Sundae.
If you're wondering what we thought, our video team held a round table - swapping out Zion for Kate! So join Alex, Felix and Kate as they share their initial impressions and excitement for this next wave of Mario Kart 8 DLC.

...I swear, if Sunbreak's first title update comes out on the same day....ugh. lol
Not too bad I guess. I still haven't purchased the DLC but I will during a quiet period.
Looks ok to me. I'll play through them all. Im just happy to play a game that collects dust most days again.
Is anti-gravity featured this time?
"Hello there, lovely people...." Nothing like a good old Alex intro.
Great discussion, but I feel you guys overexaggerated about how many courses are based on sweets. It's just Sweet Sweet Canyon and now Sky-High Sundae. The two tracks definitely have a lot of similarities, even beyond aesthetics, like having that split in the road where you can go either left or right, but I think little details like the ice cream shops and helipad in Sky-High Sundae set it apart.
You guys didn't mention that it looks like Kalimari Desert 1 and 2 are combined. The released gameplay appeared to show item boxes on the railway like in Kalimari Desert 2.
The shortcut at the start of Mushroom Gorge is back. We haven't had that since the Wii days.
I'm not the biggest fan of Snow Land, but it's hard to deny that its music is awesome. That's the course I'm most curious to play through again to see how it's changed.
@Clark2k It is. Anti-gravity appears in Sky-High Sundae.
Sydney has a Luna Park on the northern side of the Harbour Bridge. It's a small park with a Ferris wheel etc. But yes, they have correctly represented it... in a more colourful Mario fashion.
"I just hope they have the star shortcut, still - if you go in the tunnel"
It's not a shortcut anymore...
Was initially disappointed with Kalimari Desert's inclusion because I wanted Koopa Troopa Beach but incorporating Kalimari Desert 2 makes it more worthwhile, in my book. Just weird how the mesas still have the basic colored textures when everything else was seemingly overhauled, even the offroad sand (it's not just a Paint Bucket tool texture!)
Definitely excited to play some of these courses on the switch even though there will likely be some shortcomings! Awesome video as always and Kate was a great addition to the commentary.
Hey, I’m excited to see Sydney sprint! I’ve lived in Australia all my life, and it’s always nice to see it represented in overseas media.
And from my memories of being in Sydney, some of the details are spot on… like the trains running across the bridge, they do have ones that look very close to the ones in mk. (Except they are double deckers trains instead of single decks).
I imagine it must be a similar excitement for those in Amsterdam or Bangkok when their cities are represented.
Less so for Tokyo, New York and London, they already have a large media presence.
Waluigi Pinball! Wish granted! Thanks, Nintendo!
Kalimari Desert's also a welcome addition.
@Ade117 I guess there's also Donut Plains and Choco mountain and stuff, but those are mostly just the names and the courses themselves don't really have much dessert-themed aesthetics.
If only the quality of these courses matched with the rest of the game in terms of style. Everything looks like plastic.
Alex was hilarious in this vid! Excellent video! I am very much hyped that Mushroom Gorge is returning, also looking forward to the city tracks, Sky High Sundae, and Snow Land. Waluigi's Pinball looks good too. Mario Circuit 3 and Kalimari Desert are my two least favorite wave 2 courses, but the music in Mario Circuit 3 orchestrated is pure ear candy! 🍫🍬🍭
They should do an Edinburgh track where you just sit in traffic.
if we already paid for it, why bother complaining?
There's only one other food based course and what's wrong with snow? Sorry but some of the criticism in this video was a bit ridiculous and nitpicky IMO and made for a miserable listen. Thank god for Felix.
All I have left to say is thank goodness it is free with the Expansion Pack. I would never want to buy this.
Oh wow, I couldn't disagree more. Mario Circuit 3 is the one I'm most excited about (though i wish it was 4!). Twisty, tight turns and fewer flashy gimmicks means more fun in my book. Tbh I should probably just stick to the SNES original and accept that post '92/'93 Mario Karting is always gonna be a bit of a disappointment. Enjoyable vid still!
I think it's unfair to keep comparing this to MK8D deluxe art style. It's uniquely different and built in a different engine, This booster pack clearly has enough content to be it's own game, Nintendo just didn't want to split the fan base and have 2 separate mainline Mario Kart games on one platform. I for one am grateful I get to play 2 whole games in one!
The lack of proper textures really grates with me, they almost look like higher poly N64 era tracks. Something's wrong when the same tracks on 3DS have better textures!
I was hoping for some improvement in Wave 2 but instead it's convinced me not to pay extra. I'm perfectly happy playing online for free as that's the main way I play MK anyway.
@BusterMove Did you not like Mario Kart Super Circuit? I always felt it was the true sequel to the SNES game!
@Clyde_Radcliffe I did, but I thought the new circuits were universally rubbish. From what I can remember they all seemed to be wider, straighter and a whole lot less exciting that the originals. So I was left feeling delighted about having the original on a handheld, but disappointed that the new tracks weren't the sequel I'd been dreaming of.
I wasn’t expecting for a brand new course! Please keep them coming, N!
I would love to see Nintendo go all in and everyone to loose their minds when they do one cup of four different rainbow roads (3DS, Wii, NGC, DS or GBA)
I completely disagree on Mario Circuit 3. It's a proper racing track where driving actually matters, and it has the most iconic Mario Kart music. It's graphically disappointing even by Booster Pack standards but the track itself is great.
What is with the Mario Circuit 3 hate? Not everything has to be gimmicky as hell. There are plenty of other tracks of that.
@RubyCarbuncle
Did you not get the Expansion Pack for your Nintendo Online? It's including in the Pack
@6thHorizon
You want proper textures on a 7 yr old Console that was never really that good at them to begin with? Weird, well never play Breath of the Wild again or it may invoke your disgust for low resolution textures
All of these tracks are pretty awesome, my all time favorite is finally coming, Waluigi Pinball baby!
I’ll probably do what I did with wave 1…play them all to death for a few weeks, then get bored waiting for the next wave 😂
