We've got a newcomer at the top of this week's UK charts, with Nintendo Switch Sports storming to the number one spot. With the bank holiday weekend in the UK, it's perhaps no surprise that families want to get together and play some virtual ball — we know what the English weather can be like, right?
That means, after a few weeks at the top of the video game box office, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga has slipped down to second place. The Switch version is still selling the most copies, making up 31% of the game's sales.
Kirby and the Forgotten Land is back in the top ranks too, sitting comfortably in ninth. As is PlayStation's Gran Turismo 7, which speeds back up to third.
There's one fun thing that happened with the top 40 this week — Sonic Forces is back in there at 38, and 62% of sales were for the Switch release. Sonic Mania Plus also saw a little boost in sales too, going from 23 to 19, with the Switch version once again reigning supreme. Perhaps all of that Sonic chatter from a few weeks ago got people out buying Sonic games?

It's interesting that Switch sells most for the games the article mentions. Though it's not surprising. Enjoying LEGO Star Wars currently. Sonic Mania Plus is a superb Sonic game, by the way. Not in the top 10, but worth consideration
@LEGEND_MARIOID,
Lego Star Wars is awesome, I got it for the Series X, and it's amazing the job they did to fit it on the Switch.
Also enjoying Switch Sports, the motion controls are awesome, which was a worry for me before I got the game, looks like the Joycon updates have been worth it.
And, just like last week, Gran Theft Auto is in the charts again.
"Let's have a nice cup of tea before going to rob the bank. Cake?"
Goes well with Gran Turismo, I suppose!
Good week for Switch software in general. Nice to see Kirby back in the top 10, too.
Kinda dissapointed switch sports is number 1, the game is bare bones and not worth the price they are asking for it, which seems to be the trend with Nintendo's sports games, mario golf and mario tennis aces were also bare bones at launch, don't hold high hopes for Mario strikerz
I can't say I'm surprised by Switch Sport's success. There are tons of people into active gaming. And gaming is for everyone.
@Ooyah Oops! I'd be way more interested if that was what GTA was about! A genuine mistake that I missed two weeks in a row apparently, so I've fixed it.
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart PS5 should get more attention.
Yeap Kirby could not be forgotten.
@UltimateOtaku91 well, but it's not like they'll ask more money for the updates. Basically it's like you already paid even for golf. Just like Mario Tennis and Golf. You can clearly says that today they are complete games, and they didn't ask for more money, everything they add was for free. I agree that most of these contents should have been already available at launch, but it's still better than paying full price for a few contests and then pay again for more.
Big launch for Switch Sports - UK launch sales look to be around 2× that of Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
Digital sales should be quite strong too given that the digital version is cheaper than the retail version.
@AlanaHagues
Awwwwwwwwww! Now I'll have to delete my joke... could you put it back? 😆 JOKING 😆
Well Deserved! Nintendo Switch Sports is So much better than wii Sports!
@johnvboy Glad you are enjoying it. I have it on my backlog. It will be interesting how it compares to Wii Sports Resort, a personal fav. of mine of the Wii era. Currently playing LEGO SW as mentioned and Triangle Strategy.
Kirby continues to surprise me. It seems like this game has taken the series to new heights and we can expect much more from the puffball going forward. I think like with Animal Crossing, part of its success is down to the timing of its arrival. I've read a couple of articles on non gaming sites, praising it's arrival during a time of uncertainty.
I've been very critical of Nintendo's output these last few years but Switch Sports is great fun. A well deserved number 1 and looking at the menu screen there's a lot more still to come too.
@AndyC_MK111,
Will double dip on Star Wars for the handheld play, just waiting for a price drop.
Switch Sports deserves the top spot easily, nothing is more fun than Soccer online. I can't believe Nintendo decided it was a good idea to release Mario Strikers in just a few months. Compared to Switch Sports it looks terrible, like why would someone choose to play an inferior product, and who's going to buy both? I think they would have sold better if they had waited a couple years between releases.
Switch Sports is the worst first party nintendo game on nintendo switch.
Personal:
Bowling: 2/10 - everyone making 300/300 all games! It´s too easy. Not fun
Tennis: 8/10 - good one, but i prefer play single than double. This game you cannot change this option. It´s only doubles.
Chambara 5/10 - nice on paper, but limited execution. Not strategic in all.
Badminton (i´m a badminton player in real life) - 7/10 its nothing like the real game....it´s a more simplistic version of tennis game, and faster. But not strategic, only timming evolved. Nothing more.
Soccer 0 / 10 - soooo boring....soooo sloowwww.....KINECT SOCCER is much better....in Kinect Sports, playing soccer allows you to dribble opponents,
fake kicking, play for other players, and control them...kick exactly where you wanted with the force you wanted using your left or right foot...and you could still defend being the goalkeeper...with your whole body , using any move. Here, this game is the most boring i´ve ever played on Nintendo Switch.
Volleyball: idem...the old Kinect Sports Volleyball is MUCH BETTER than this....much more precision and control on Kinect Sports.
This game is a U$19,90 game. Never 39,90 one.
@Nintendo_Thumb
Yeah football's been the real surprise for me so far, once you get into the 'pro' matches with better players it really opens up.
OK, its no PES but its not trying to be either. Its just good fun.
@johnvboy Wait a sec...are we in "celebrating mediocrity" territory again? 🤣
Glad Kirby is still selling hotcakes especially with the sudden sales height of Switch Sports that I was expecting.
@WiltonRoots,
I have been celebrating mediocrity for years now, apparently.
@Rykdrew,
I paid £32, plus more stuff to be added, sorry you don't like it, I think the game is awesome for what it is.
@johnvboy Apart from golf, will the other content be free or paid? Can't say. This is a poor game.
Very little content. That's why it's not worth $39.90 to me. For me this is a typical $19.90 game for the little content it has.
It's just my opinion. Unfortunately, there's nothing anyone can tell me that will change that. I have Wii Sports (free game) and Wii Sports Resort (i paid $19,90 at that time) and they are better. Resort has much more content.
@Rykdrew,
Not trying to change your mind, but in my opinion the game is fine, with good controls and more content on the way.
Wii sports was a pack in game, pretty sure it's value was factored into the overall price of the console, so not totally free.
I respect your opinion. I just think that "more content on the way." is too abstract.
Golf. Ok. What more? Free or paid DLC?
Abstract...not a selling point for me.
@AlanaHagues no Japanese charts this week?
@Otoemetry It was Golden Week in Japan so a lot of places were shut, including Famitsu who record and share the data. Should all be back to normal this week!
@AlanaHagues ah I didn't know that, thank you for the information!
