Re: Best Of 2021: Steven Spohn On Strides In Accessibility For Gaming, And Nintendo's Room For Improvement

zombi3wolf

I think people are confusing what accessibility should mean in this case. A game being too difficult to play (ie Dark Souls), is not an accessibility issue. It's about overcoming the challenges, and as a pretty casual gamer myself, some of my best memories came from Darks Souls 3, as it challenged and frustrated me. If you think a game is too difficult, it's really not for you, that's all.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Favourite New Feature In Animal Crossing: New Horizons 2.0 And The Happy Home DLC?

zombi3wolf

Ironically Brewster was the only thing I knew of going into the update/dlc, and it's probably the one thing I care least about.

I love Harvs island and that I can finally pay attention to adding items to my museum as I'd either forget to check for Redd or he'd only have fakes when he came to my island.

The new items are also refreshing, and while pricey (in game) I'm getting a lot of the castle walls/gates to build a small castle area.
The ability also on Harvs island to change the colour of items is easily one of the best things. No more needing to head over to nookazon for a simple colour change.

New villagers seem pretty good. Had Marlo on the DLC island pretty early on and quite like him. Cephalobot is also great.
Bought the amiibo for Petrie and have her on my island.

Oh and villagers coming over to your place. It's a small thing, but I missed that when playing NH.

Re: Animal Crossing Gyroids - How To Find Gyroid Fragments And Grow Gyroids In New Horizons

zombi3wolf

I actually do like them now. After I filled one room in the museum in NL I just stopped collecting them, but seeing as you can place them outdoors and even hang them on a wall, I'll actually use them now.

Minor, slight complaint though (a personal "me" issue)...really wish you didn't have to water them. Don't think I've even owned a watering can in my current island as I just can't be bothered to water things. Got lucky yesterday as it was raining lol.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 2.0.0 Patch Notes - Final Major Update, Happy Home Paradise DLC And More

zombi3wolf

I think I'm finally ready to retire my NL town for good now.
2 fairly small things that I wanted in NH was villagers visiting your house and the ability to get a "log cabin" look outside for your own....was pleasantly surprised to see both yesterday.

While I think Nintendo has dropped the ball on things more often than not lately, and while most of this should have been included from the start (or with previous updates), have to say I'm quite happy with it and the DLC.

5-10 years from now if not sooner it wouldn't surprise me clubs like Chelsea, City, PSG and others who have had a fairly fast influx of cash have similar issues. Sad reality of modern sports :/ I like Arsenal and they've pretty much gone that way already, try to stablize financially while fighting to be a mid-table team. (also I know this isn't related to the article, just Barca's mess).

Re: Round Up: First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck - How Does It Compare To Switch?

zombi3wolf

@NintendoDad It does seem like you might be able to install Windows on it, however it's uncertain how it will preform.

Most people won't notice they are using Linux with the SteamDeck tbh, similar in a way to how they are running Linux when using an Android device. Proton has made about (I think) 70% of games compatible now. The issue is with games with certain DRM and anti-cheat. So we'll have to wait and see how Valve handles that.

Definitely check out some Linux distros for your PC's in the future. My main computer is a 2014 Macbook Pro running Linux (KDE Neon) breathed new life into it. Recent MacOS releases slowed it down considerably with too much bloat.
I also have a 2013 Lenovo laptop and a 2009 HP desktop that both run linux, and they honestly preform better than many newer PC's with Windows on it.

Re: Round Up: Here Are The First "Hands-On" Impressions Of Valve's Steam Deck

zombi3wolf

As a Linux user I certainly welcome the Steam Deck in hopes it helps out with desktop Linux gaming going forward. As for the Steam Deck itself tho? 95% of all the games I own on Steam I prefer with Kb&M so I don't see any benefit to it (well my gaming rig did die on me, so Steam Deck would be cheaper than a new PC).

I also do agree it seems weird to keep showcasing Stardew when I see anything Steam Deck vs Switch. Both my old laptops from 2013 & 14 can't run any game I own EXCEPT Stardew lol.

@Anti-Matter Everyday on my NL town, I get one (sometimes two) villagers who will ask me to catch them an insect or fish, find them a certain sized item for their house, or to set a time and come over. That is all missing and lacking in NH with the villagers. If people dislike that, they could ignore the requests.

You also say benefit to some players, which makes it seem like most still preferred the less robotic villagers.

I had two lazies in NL, and not once did they say the same thing in the same day. Yet in NH my two lazies give word for word the exact same dialogue each day. NH would be better off limiting villagers to 8 (1 of each type). There really isn't any excuse on more powerful hardware to have villagers have more varied dialogue.

It's fine for Nintendo to remove NPCs like Resetti etc. if they felt they added nothing, likewise with the stores (shampoodle), but they didn't give us anything new, which means this game (on a more powerful system) has objectively less content.

Re: EB Games Canada To Rebrand To GameStop By The End Of This Year

zombi3wolf

@Echostory I sort of feel that way. I haven't shopped at Best Buy since they dropped and shutdown Future Shop. I never cared for the BB brand and preferred FS.

I know Zellers was in a poor state (and was owned by an American who did try to keep them going), when Target eventually bought up those stores, I pretty much never stepped foot inside one as the Target brand meant nothing to me...and we all know what a disaster Target turned out to be, only strengthening Walmarts hold on the market today.

Even though this is a rebranding and not an ownership change, I just get the feeling this will be used as an excuse to "downsize" some markets. And if they do that, I absolutely won't give GameStop the time of day, as the GS brand to me is horrible based strictly on all the comments over the years from Americans who either shop or worked there.

Not everything "cartoony" or "cute" is aimed at kids. Nintendo knows very well that the AC series has had mostly adults (18+) playing them, at least the past 2 or 3 entries. This game wouldn't have lasted nearly as long as it has on the top 10 sellers if it was a game for kids.

Many adults especially as they get older want relaxing, simple games that aren't serious or hardcore. It's not kids that keep games like this, Story of Seasons, Stardew, My Time at Portia, The Sims and the likes alive so brushing off criticism as "adults whining about a kids game" is disingenuous.

I also can't say I see anything "educational" with this game (perhaps I am missing it). At a minimum NL had Gulliver's geography quiz, albeit basic. And I believe some of the original games the villagers would mock you for spelling errors (or so I've been told).

Another thing that I think NL does (mostly) better is when a villager asks to leave. They give what, 2 weeks notice. I let Lucha leave, but two days before his move date he expressed doubt about leaving, so I let him stay. That just makes the villagers feel more alive IMO.
I do get that people might want a villager to leave ASAP, but I just like how this worked out.

Like #149 says, NH they do feel more robotic, or just outright lifeless.

Re: EB Games Canada To Rebrand To GameStop By The End Of This Year

zombi3wolf

The EB nearest to my house and the one I've dealt with for years is actually really well run and the employees and manager are great. They often send people to a nearby locally owned used game store if they don't have a game in stock.

I suspect in the coming month's we will see an article about stores closing also so they don't have to spend the money on remodelling of signs/colour. My city has 3 EB's, I wouldn't be surprised one or even two end up closing. Happened when Best Buy decided to drop the Future Shop brand.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.11.0 Patch Notes - Seasonal Events, Fixes And More

NH for me is like the majority of newer games. Nicer to look at, some improvements in certain areas, but major steps back in others.

I still play it, more so since I restarted I have my final debt to payoff but it's more out of habit I play it still. Shake trees, get lots of twigs, get some bear I'll never use, get one bell to fall, dig up the 4 fossils, avoid my villagers since they say ask for nothing and say the same thing over and over, sell items, see uninspired items in the shop for sale, payoff a bit of my debt and repeat.

Also feel like you are punished for liking any of your first 5 villagers by never upgrading their interiors to the proper ones.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Update 1.11.0 Patch Notes - Seasonal Events, Fixes And More

zombi3wolf

A few months ago I started ACNL (properly for the first time) around the same time I decided to restart my 1100 hour NH island, and tbh I can see why many are disappointed with NH now.

While decorating your house in NH is better than NL, the furniture options are terrible. You have to craft anything worth while, but first need the recipes and also go around hitting trees for the mats.
I also have a cabin exterior in NL as there are (seemingly) more options of what you want your house to look like. There are pretty much 3 or 4 options in NH with different colours.

The big thing wearing me down with NH now are the tools. I'm tired of them breaking. Since I restarted my island I don't have most gold recipes and even then, in my previous island after 1100 hours I only ever had 2 1/2 stacks of gold, so I hardly have enough gold to waste on tools that will still end up breaking.

Also villager interaction is...boring in NH :/ They almost never chase me down to ask anything, whereas daily I get at least one (often times two) villagers in NL asking for something or to come over to my house.

I prefer Gulliver in NL, I like the basic geography quiz over wearing down my shovel to dig up 5 pieces for his communicator.

As for missing buildings, I miss the police station, Brewsters, Re-Tail etc.

Don't get me wrong, I like NH but NL for myself is more enjoyable now and I just rush through my daily routine in NH so I can spend more time in my NL town.

Re: Soapbox: Animal Crossing Is A Daily Delight, But These Aren't Really 'Updates', Are They?

zombi3wolf

I've played this game daily since release, and even spent the past week and a half completely re-designing my island from top to bottom...having said that, content wise it's still very meh. I finally decided to start up New Leaf and have been enjoying that. New Horizons' biggest pluses over NL is the ability to move things around (houses, trees etc.) the way you lay pathways and so on. But when it comes to stores and villager interaction, I am loving NL.

Also would love to see them address how the star rating is, at the very least after you've got 5 stars. It's annoying that my island looks so much nicer now than before, yet I was bumped down to a 4 star ranking all because it's "too rural"...which is the point of the design of my island.
