As you can imagine, we play an awful lot of games here at Nintendo Life – you should see some of the team's total playtime on games like Splatoon 2 and Zelda: Breath of the Wild – but even we can't come close to the total time put in by this fan.
If you head to your profile page from the Switch's main menu, you'll be greeted with a list of the games you've played recently and the total number of hours you've put in. You'll likely see numbers in the tens, or possibly the hundreds for your favourite titles, but Reddit user daveboy2000 claims to have reached the Switch's maximum play time counter limit in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
What is that total, you ask? Why, it's an absolutely staggering 9,999.
Now, we've done the maths, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons only launched 560 days ago. There are only 13,440 hours in 560 days, which means daveboy2000 must have had the game running for roughly 18 hours every single day since launch – we imagine this will have involved a lot of having the game idly running in the background, but blimey.
Of course, this isn't the first time that Switch's maximum hour count has been discovered. The first time we noticed the count be reached was back in 2019, when someone hit the total in Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
As a final note, we'd like to remind you that however you like to play your games, whether that's for one hour or one thousand, is perfectly fine. You do you, just make sure to look after yourselves!

Okay, I get idling is a thing, but how the heck do you spend that much time in Animal Crossing? There is nothing to do (or at least anything I found interesting, I cannot vouch for everyone).

Someone must really love that background music and just has it on in the background all day
@Trajan It's maths. Mathematics is a plural - you don't say Mathematic as a noun.
Jesus... never gonna joke about AC community ever again
Why try and cheat the game played clock?!? How sad. Those maths mean he hasn’t really played anything else since it’s release and left it on active all this time to what?!? Prove he played it a lot. It makes me think the opposite. People today will do anything to go viral. He could have just enjoyed his switch instead.
Someone teach them what ‘sleep mode’ is…
@MS7000 there is plenty to do in Animal Crossing, just not nearly as much to beat or complete in the traditional sense (which is what ultimately had my backlog-minded self drift away from New Leaf but obviously resonates with many others). And New Horizons, which became a borderline miiverse in its own right over the pandemic year(s), only boasts the effect tenfold. But even the franchise's general philosophy, with a truly open-ended gameplay and content rotation based on real world clock, pretty much did a lot of social networks' appeal before it was cool - its towns and lives are meant for recurrent casual visits akin to newsfeed checks.
@Trajan because people use the ENGLISH language correctly…. Not some butchered version where MATH is a singular. It’s not.
@Trajan not everything is the same as it in in America. Other places do exist!
That… or it’s just a photoshop. Can be done easily.
@Stocksy @BongoBongo
https://www.thesaurus.com/e/grammar/math-vs-maths/
Apparently it's a brit thing.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Based on the math, this person has been playing Animal Crossing for an average of ~18 hours per day since its launch.
I don't believe it.
@Trajan Maths isn't a Brit thing - Math is an Americanisation thing
(you can substitute a z for the s in Americanisation if it blows your mind that people spell words differently)
He does say in the reddit comments that he got this many hours mostly by leaving it on overnight because "monkey brain release serotonin molecule when number go up "
I doubt the screenshot is real
I'm guessing he/she host treasure islands so those numbers make sense. Basically they just leave the game on for players to visit the island and you can pick-up anything on the ground and leave. The only time the host closes the game is either when playing a different game or the island is already empty and he/she plans to re-stock.
Remember when I was an unemployed kid and adults would give me 'the look' whenever I told them I played PSO for 250 hours. Hitting 10k maybe be less of brag than it seems.
Speaking of, is idling in a game really that much of an achievement?, is it really attention worthy?. I feel like anything less than "that's sad" isn't really a worthy response to this.
Mainly by leaving it on overnight - what a waste of electricity for a couple of upvotes.
@Trajan it’s an English thing. The English language. I’m English. It’s correct. You do maths. Doing Math makes no sense.
Removed - inappropriate
Has Animal Crossing even been released since 9999 hours?
@Trajan in America it's "math". In most other countries it's "maths". It's just a regional thing.
Good grief..
I've coded 115 varied games using SmileBASIC, and even that's only just reached 700 hours!!
Removed - flaming/arguing
I really don't know how many of those hours they actually played.
@nhSnork "But even the franchise's general philosophy, with a truly open-ended gameplay and content rotation based on real world clock, pretty much did a lot of social networks' appeal before it was cool"
That would probably explain a lot about why I don't get on with Animal Crossing. Fair play if people find it enjoying though. But even then, 9999 hours in it seems ridiculous.
@MS7000 If you're very creative and design savvy and enjoy being social with like-minded friends who can appreciate your efforts then it's really not hard to be pushing a couple thousand hours in the game by now if you've not grown bored by the lack of proper DLC. 9,999 is disingenuous though, that's a lot of it just sitting on in the background.
@MS7000
There are TON of things to do in ACNH from getting specific villagers getting all variant color objects, terraforming the island, getting all sea creatures / bugs, hanging out with friends, taking photo, planting pumpkins, etc.
Don't ever say there is Nothing to do because i have played for more than 645 hours and still have something to do.
@Trajan I bet you think you speak American too XD
At least part of my 600+ hours was keeping my island open for friends to do various things while I was asleep. If you just do that 24/7 it would be easy enough to get to 9999. Although that means you do essentially nothing else with your switch.
Poor trajan. An army of english teachers started to show him how wrong he is.
Removed - trolling/baiting
I can't believe people whose tongue trips over words they invented like they're obstacles in a relay race are telling people how to speak. Peak oirony innit luv
@SpaceboyScreams You need to obtain a licence from the Queen to attack us Brits...
Haha I’m about to reach 1500 hours in AC. I play for a few minutes every now and then, gift my villagers things, let my mom fish in the game, put out my Halloween decorations, designed a new shirt recently, love to take cute pics of the villagers etc. I def want a significant update tho waiting for this new one.
18 hours a day?!
My playtime has whittled down to a little over 18 minutes a month.
@SpaceboyScreams I suppose lack of creativity would explain it for me also. I have got the whole house in ACNH, but the only room that is decorated is the first room.
@Anti-Matter Okay, I'll rephrase. There is nothing to do if you are playing the game without time travelling.
This user's poor switch probably hasn't had a good rest since AC was released. Turn it off, even for 5mins. Let the poor cooling fan have a breather. The screen hasn't blinked for months. This is console cruelty at its best.
I'm enjoying this argument. We say "maths" because there are multiple "mathematics" - algebra, analysis, topology, statistics, geometry, linear algebra... I could go on. And yeah, some of those fields do step on each other's toes, but they are still different "mathematics." I believe we should say "sciences" for the same reason when talking about the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, ... although we can let it slide when using "science" to talk about the scientific method. And before you argue that "math" can be used for the 'mathematical method', we already have a word for that: "logic."
@MS7000
Time travelling is my main activity in ACNH since i can exploit the Redd art items or get other color variant objects or all Zodiac items, etc. I got everything I want, I can take control of the time, I can get rid unwanted villagers I don't like quickly like they were never exist in my island, etc. Hail to the Time Travel activity. 🤟
It's a new vocabulary for Animal Crossing veteran, Time Traveler gamer, take a note.
It's a fun activity to do for me whether you dislike them.
Trajan: Reveals himself as from the US with a regional dialect question.
Comment Section: So you have chosen death.
Aside from 'mathgate' (runs for cover), kudos to the writer for the last paragraph of the article.
@Anti-Matter And that is fine if that is how you want to play the game. That said, I shouldn't need to do time traveling to find the game enjoyable. Constantly opening and closing the game and changing the system clock does not sound like fun.
@MS7000
When people have enough passion for a game, they really do know how to look for fun out of their favourite game.
Well, that's a waste of electricity right there...
@MS7000 for the amount this game sold, plus the times we're in right now, I wouldn't be surprised if someone spent a lot of time on this game. I played it for a 3/4 of 2020, it's still my most played game with over 75 hours. However, 9,999 hours?! Is it possible to have that much time on your hands?
Converted it would be over 416 days.
Why has my Rocket League hours stopped at 390 when I've played far more than that?
If they've left the switch idle for the majority of that time so they can rack up a big number of hours... Great way to shorten your Switch's lifespan! If they've actually been playing 18 hours per day every day for 18 months, I fail to see how that can be part of a healthy lifestyle.
idling Is not gameplay….we can all leave our switches on
@Trajan Yeah, a Brit thing, with a bunch of people named after the language they speak....
Impossible, no way Switch works for 9999 hours.
@BongoBongo
Enough with the language wars... let's have a neurotransmitter war instead! Shouldn't that be Dopamine instead of Serotonin? Serotonin is primarily released upon the completion of survival tasks.
Speaking of "hours" played. Has anyone started or finished that one switch game that took 400hrs to beat, or unlock the ending or whatever it was.
Literally over 9000
@BongoBongo
That may be... But Melatonin levels drop with light and especially Blue Light.
The dudes sleep couldn't ever be restful or recharging/healthy.
@PhhhCough
Yeah, 600+ in XenoBlade 2
500+ in XenoBlade 1
If they ever somehow get XenoBlade X on the Switch, I'll easily surpass 1000 hours because of the online component.
I never had internet for long with the WiiU, so I couldn't do much of those.
it's not necessary to eat, sleep, etc to reach this number, simple.
Somebody doesn’t sleep or lives on a diet of coffee and no-doze.
@Stocksy Math is correct in America. Maths is correct in England. Both countries speak English but speak different dialects. This is not difficult to understand.
Also do not give me "The English language. I’m English. It’s correct." It's unavailing. The English language spoken in your country is far different than it was when the American dialect started to develop centuries ago. I never heard anyone from England ask me "wherefore art thou HeHateMii."
@Anti-Matter Question for ya. Since you time travel, how do you know you've played 645 hours? Is the system smart enough to keep track of how long you've played even when you reset the system clock? Just wondering if the system still kept track or you wrote it all down? Since the PS4 doesn't keep track of time very well I have been known to write down on how long I've played. Of course most single player PS3/4 games are like 12 hours, not the 550 I have in ACNH. If somebody asked me how long I've played ACNH I'd probably say "a couple of hundred" even though it's been 550 b/c most of that was covid quarantine time and I don't even remember playing it like 6-8 hours a day for 6 months when I had nothing else to do.
Still, 9,999 is a long way from 500 or 600 that we and @FishyS have. This person certainly didn't PLAY ACNH for 10k hours, the Switch was kept running for 10k hours w/ the game on in the background. I played my 550. Well maybe 500, I've fallen asleep a lot playing it for like 20 minutes at a time. 😂
Half this thread is about "maths"? Seriously? smh
@rjejr
My gameplay hours of ACNH has been recorded, it displayed on Profile (Play Activity)
Gameplay hours still got recorded normally regardless I did time travel or not.
So if I played my ACNH for straight 5 hours in real time, it will be recorded as 5 hours too.
@HeHateMii I’ll be honest I couldn’t careless if it’s math or maths (it’s maths) but the comment I responded to was claiming that the article was wrong for calling it maths. Americans can butcher the language all they want and claim to be leaders of the free world….. but I will correct them when they try and tell me the English are speaking English wrong. I would never correct an American for spelling stuff wrong or saying Americanisms. Just don’t tell me I’m wrong.
@Anti-Matter Thanks. I'm impressed Nintendo made the Switch OS capable of keeping track that well. I mean it should, but we should have folders by now too. 😉
The guy confirmed on Reddit that he just left it running when he wasn't playing it. Not really a feat tbh. I feel sorry for the hardware T_T
@Stocksy But you are wrong. Using the word "Math" is not incorrect or butchering the English language. The word "Math" is in the Oxford English Dictionary.
My advice to you is to be less sensitive and xenophobic. It is good for the blood pressure, and you will be less likely to let your prejudices lead you to make erroneous comments.
@Trajan I thought it was just a cheeky little joke.
Edit: (“It” being the article subtitle.)
@HeHateMii again you haven’t read my comment. This is becoming hard work. I am not xenophobic far from it. I just don’t think my country is the centre of the universe. You’ve been triggered I understand that. You have a great username. I applaud the XFL reference. It’s not xenophobic to say America is irrelevant to most of the world it’s a fact. Your average Frenchman or German doesn’t care what happens in America or what the President of America says. Sorry if that flies in the face of what you’ve been told but it’s a fact.
And again I wasn’t sensitive the first comment was having a go at the author. Incorrectly. You are just now flexing your keyboard muscles and I’m too old to be bothered by your opinion of me.
He hate me. He hate me and he hate me. I’m used to it. Even have it on the back of a jersey.
Sheesh I'm not surprised that somebody was able to hit the max hour limit. I'm waiting till somebody has done that with Breath of the Wild
@Stocksy Nobody has gotten the XFL reference in my user name before. Well done. Out of respect for the reference, I will not call the XFL "football."
@BongoBongo we say "math" in the US, is language logical? No, it's not. Get over it.
Someone desperately needs a job if he has time to play games for 18hrs a day
Unbelievable how "maths" vs. "math" turns this comment section into a written war between the UK and America.
The English language stems from Dutch, Danish and German brought to Britian by Anglo-Saxon immigrants. Someone find out what they used.
@Spider-Kev right on! That's what I'm talking bout!
Just found out, the game in question is "the Longing". Has anyone beaten that one yet.
@Stocksy U ok buddy? 😥
@Duffman92 lmao yeah
@MS7000 only way that I can rationalize this is if different people were using the same account to play throughout the day. Seems less than optimal, but anything short of that is sheer insanity.
@Stocksy the only time American politics have ever seemed relevant on my travels in Europe is when I am wincing in embarrassment and offering an apology on behalf of my people.
@Frontiersmann ha. It’s ok. I’m English I know that same feeling. The English and Americans are the same with thinking others care about us and often we are just the laughing stock. Especially right now. England rightly deserves to be mocked
@HeHateMii LMAO. I thought everyone knew the legend of Hehateme. I don’t mind it being called football. I love that football as much as the other football. ESPN 30 for 30 has an excellent episode about the XFL. Well XFL part 1 anyway….
@nhSnork correction *there’s plenry to do in past animal crossing games, but almost nothing to do in New Horizons.
@Stocksy our culture infects the world. So much so that the west has little of its own.
Also, this is the English speaking english:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AXGP4Sez_Us
Much like atari was over taken by Nintendo, American English has superseded British English.
Did you know: the American South actually speaks British English, but slowed down? We typically call it hillbilly speak.
Hours played is essentially meaningless since it also counts time in standby. You can do the same by opening the app, putting it in sleep mode, and leaving it in the dock for 1 year and 52 days.
Hey, and I'm hoping Nintendo life does a poll on this, but does anyone else lose progress on game hours between Switches? So I have an OG Switch and a Lite but if I start an old game with say 30 hours on the OG and boot it up on my Lite, it sometimes doesn't recognize the 30 hours (save data is fine so progression isn't affected), in the worst instances it will completely reset the total hours played. Then I switch back to the OG Switch, those hours now reflect the hours the Switch Lite logged. So in some cases back down to 1-3 hours played. I reported it to Nintendo years ago but it never resolved so I don't even use cloud saves & boot old games on it like LoZ BOTW or SSBU. I just use a few retro or indie games where hoir count doesn't matter. Anyone else bothered by this or have the issue? Comment or heart this, interested to know!! Especially if you can resolve it
@Anti-Matter You shouldn't be proud to cheat in a video game
@Stocksy Most animal crossing superfans have multiple switches for multiple islands. I wouldn't be surprised if he had two or three switches. I agree with you on the other statements though.
Meaningless if you are Idle for like half the time.
@Trajan Thats not an English person. He's Scottish. Scotland is a different country - even has its own languages (Gaelic and Scots), like Wales (my own country) has Welsh. We both speak our own regional variation of English as well though, because we are part of Great Britain and the United Kingdom and having a shared language is useful!
He is partially speaking English, but Scots English with a strong Glaswegian accent. Many English people have difficulty understanding that accent, its famously the strongest and least like vanilla English, and has many non-English words (Scots is a Germanic origin language that evolved at the same time as English and shares many similarities but has many differences in words, phrasing and grammar).
But also... as someone who DOES understand strong Glaswegian accents as I grew up around them, that clip is not an actual sentence. The man was flustered by being interviewed and made lots of "ummm.... well you know.... i guess what you could say is...." kinds of noises, which have been edited together for comedy effect, removing the full complete thoughts inbetween.
I've got friends (random online Switch friends, not real life) who have 5 or 6 thousand hours on Rocket League. I don't think they've played it that much, but have left it on the title screen most of that time.
@HeHateMii Thank you for being sensible in a sea of pettiness and unnecessarily malicious nationalism over dialects.
@PhhhCough Maybe on PC. The Longing takes 400 real time days to complete, and only released on Switch in April 2021, so Switch peeps are still waiting.
@Trajan I've listened to that five times now and I still don't have a clue what she said.
@NinTasha
Time Travel is Not cheating.
It is an alternative method to play and i will keep going with Time Travel because in ACNH, i take control of the time.
Take a note. 🤟
@BongoBongo
Nope. Forgive me, I know you didn't start this so no hate, but there is nothing I love more then dozens of comments about the correct way to use a word that is being used wrong to begin with!
It's Arithmetic, given it's simple axiomatic calculation.
To be MATH you need to be dealing with logical relations between numbers, proofs, theorems and other things derived from axioms. While some school of thought put atraumatic as a branch of mathematics, saying you are doing math here would be like saying the language we are using right now is West Germanic.
So the correct sentence would be "we did some athematic"
As for mathematics, it's from the Greek máthēma which became the Latin mathematica. The "a" suffix in Latin is for plural words, meaning it has no singular form.
Beyond that both MATH and MATHS are abbreviations, barely 100 years old. Math came first for what it's worth, but it doesn't matter. Its' short hand, regional dialect or slang. If your area uses "math" then it is singular and plural, and that's also the case if you use "maths". Neither can claim to be "correct" or more correct then the other as neither are in the English lexicon. The only formally correct word to use is mathematics, but as long as you don't use math AND maths at the same time, you're not "wrong"
I'm sure Trajan has made some delightfully wonderful points in this comments section, but unfortunately most of them have removed for trolling
I'm with you HeadPirate.
Math and maths are both abbreviations of mathematics. The Americans just abbreviate it further so that even the 's' has been removed. I'm not sure if there are other instances of this abbreviation difference between US and British English?
Interwebs seem to suggest that math has been in written use since the 1840s and maths since around 1910. Both of these ways are correct, although you'd get some strange looks saying 'math' in the UK, and I'm sure that would be the same saying 'maths' in the US.
That’s sad. I’m not even joking. Just sad. 9,999 hours or more that could have been used to better yourself, learn something new or better the world.
If this is true and no idling was done, It’s pretty disgusting and downright depressing. Definitely something I wouldn’t be proud of. Reeks of depression, self loathing, and no social life. Balance is key folks.
@Richnj really?! Only in april of this year?? Man, I thought it came out last year or something. Damn..
Lol I see people getting there feelings hurt and reporting people Lol report this."passes the b@bies in the group diapers"
First of all running a game idle should not count against game time period. I mean you are not playing it at all. People do this just for crap like this.
@PhhhCough To be fair to the game, you don't actually have to spend 400 in game days to beat it. Like, that is definitely one way to do it, but there are things you can do in the game to speed up that counter. On "How Long to Beat" it says the average time to beat just the main story is like a little over 20 hours. Edit: so there can be people that beat the game since it released on Switch
However there is nothing stopping someone from starting the game, setting a reminder for 400 days later, and coming back to beat it.
So even playing The Longing probably won't get someone to the hours this person got in ACNH, unless you decide to have it on all day every day for 400 days, which might enhance the experience?
@Trajan The video you link to, to try and make a point about the English speaking English, is about the Glaswegian accent. That's the Glaswegian accent that is spoken in Glasgow, the Glasgow in Scotland. Not in England.
And so what. Some Glaswegians have a thick accent. I'm assuming from your stance you are American and have an accent as well. Really doesn't matter.
So rather than continue to try and dig yourself out of your ignorant hole, only to dig yourself further in, maybe just drop it.
Removed - inappropriate language
@PhhhCough
Some other longish he's are the two Ys games and Skyrim.
@Trajan
I'm in MO!
@Anti-Matter It is cheating, but ok ✌
I reached it in Pokémon about a year ago 😅
I can think of worse ways to waste your time than running your gaming system nonstop for months on end, but not many.
if you turn on your animal crossing for one night 10hours and do that everyday i have 5.661 hours
@NinTasha no its not cheat if you played 15 hours everyday since came out you will have same or you play 10 hours then other family member play it when you sleep its more then 20 hours day.
10 days is 200 hours then
Why did this comment section turn into a huge math debate...
@Trajan Hate to break it to you, but being from the Midwest, you are still speaking English with an accent. As any American is. As pretty much anyone from the UK is as well. Because there are so many regional dialects and accents, what is an original English accent? It certainly isn't Midwest American.
You also state about American culture that "our culture infects the world. So much so that the west has little of its own", yet seem to miss the irony that you're posting this on a British based website, that specialises in reporting about the work of a more than 100 year old Japanese company.
Idling or not I'd have gotten tired of looking at the game by the 1000 hour mark. I only have one game with more than 500 hours and most of that was from me idling, I stopped playing it for the most part and only login for the daily.
I do wonder why the Ps4 really track game time, the Xbox and the switch both have ways to check easily. I mean I guess if you're playing an RPG you can tell by the save file, but otherwise you probably need to wait for your PlayStation wrap up stats to be emailed.... they even congratulate you if you get a ps5 (the one that does track play time).
@talllennart Yes it is cheating
and also @Anti-Matter you don't even understand how to play Animal Crossing, you miss all the important things that the game has in it lol
@westman98
He could've played 36 hours in one sitting, and then have a longer break before playing like 18 hours. It's average, so we can't know how exactly he has been playing. At times, he's probably just had it run in the background.
@Cia
So he alternated between playing 36 hours sittings and resting for a total of 9,999 hours?
Nah
@westman98
Did you even understand what I meant? I'm pretty sure he didn't play it watching the clock all the time for 18 hours per day.
@HeadPirate thanks for that - some of which I did know and the rest was informative
I know you were not replying to anyone in particular but I never said Math was wrong - I merely corrected someone who said Maths was wrong.
@Anti-Matter Uhh yeah nah it's cheating. But yeah sure go on.
@Zyph
Even i still have to work hard by Time travelling, it doesn't mean i can get everything exactly i want.
This is how did i play ACNH, by Time Travelling since i treated ACNH like Harvest Moon games (proceed to the next day quickly).
The fact that yall are fighting over using math or maths....is about as ridiculous as someone leaving their game on for 18 hrs a day. Cmon ppl....🥱...do better.
@VoidofLight
I really want to know what all those things were in CF. People repeat how all the other ACs had supposedly so much to do, but to me it seems like some major rose-tinted glasses.
@Rin-go City Folk was barren, but New Leaf itself stepped up the amount of things to actually do. It's why so many people regard New Leaf as the best one, because it has the most content in the series, at least in comparison to every other entry. New Horizons is like 1-2 steps ahead of new leaf, and then takes 60 steps behind in comparison.
That’s disgraceful. All them hours and they could have spent them trying to cure disease or do something positive. I do positive things and then use my Switch to unwind at the end of the day though weekends are my own. No DIY, just family time, no work, games are okay. So my playtime is obviously fractions of that truly messed up person.
9999 hours is too much. Even Nintendo didn’t think anyone was sad enough for that.
I bet they’re a straight cis male with bad social skills, bad personal hygiene, and bad looks. Just guessing. But I bet I’m correct as I usual am.
First time in months I decide to read comments and you get a bunch of elitists arguing over language, and other elitists trying to claim there is cheating in a single player, non-competitive game....all on a pointless article about someone who lets their Switch remain on to up their "played time" for useless social media cred.
