Nintendo has been eager to emphasize that version 2.0 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the first and only 'major' update to the game. We had various small updates previously of course, adding new events, items and themes, but today's arrival was far more substantial. In addition to new characters, locations and features, it seems to have added a lot of items.
Datamining results shared on animalcrossingworld.com suggest the number of new items could be as high as 9000+. That's crazy, but the number is currently being reviewed and debated, as it also depends on whether you count clones and new colour variations of existing items. In terms of items that are fully brand new, it could be more in the region of 1000+.
Whatever your criteria - whether you count new colour variations / skins or not - it's a huge number of new items. That's very welcome for long-established players eager to discover new furniture, clothes etc. The extra storage on offer from residential services sure becomes more tempting, too.
Of course, don't scroll down that Animal Crossing World source link if you want to avoid spoilers.
Basically, there's a lot to discover in the game once you upgrade it to version 2.0.
Let us know if you've been exploring the update today - what's been your favourite find?

yet a store upgrade isn't one? Or maybe it is? I do feel like they'd mention when the store will upgrade.
I prefer this big update instead of drip-feeding live service games.
Ah, the joy of discovery. I will try hard to avoid spoilers.
Also: I hope we can cook insects. Food of the future. High protein.
I've put in 150 hours and I still feel like I hardly have anything to make the cute towns and houses I see online.
I remember using Action Replay on the GameCube version to access all the extra NES games that you couldn't access in the game proper (e-reader was removed in Europe). Had a whole NES games room in my house!
Is no one gonna make an "OVER 9000" joke?
Anyways, I hope there's more Nintendo furniture in here like Zelda stuff, but I feel like they would have showcased it in the Direct.
@Diogmites i mean it's easy to add an extra profile on your switch and create house #2, etc. At least that's what I have to do now 😅
Some people were speculating there might be 1000 new items. I thought they were being far too optimistic. Hard to believe they were actually right!
For now, I'm not looking at any lists, I'm going to take my time and find the new furniture for myself. =D It's really comforting to know that there is truthfully a lot. This game needed it, a lot.
@Franz you vill eat ze bugs!
No thanks. I prefer delicious meat 😋
Answer this question honestly: Would you rather this game release day 1 with all the features that will be included in 2.0 or do you prefer the slow-drip method we've experienced these past few years?
What made me love the game even more was when I tried another trip with Kap'n, and he said one trip per day. I went to Harv's with 900,000 bells, and the gyroid told me to come back later. This game is made for the long play.
I was happy with this game yesterday, every thing new is icing on the cake!
@Astral-Grain Been a fan since release, though playtime has waned a bit, I'm excited for the content injection into the game at this point. Lots of opportunities for new design and building.
If they HAD left the door open for another large DLC in the future, I'd probably be on board for that too.
@Astral-Grain I like this major drop. It feels like a new game.
I actually scrolled through all the items, hoping to find a furniture set from New Leaf I wanted desperately to make a return.
It wasn't there, and that bummed me out.
I did find some cool new backpack options and a few interesting options for furniture, but I can't deny how sad I am that we didn't get that old furniture set...
@Astral-Grain i liked the drip in the end, otherwise I wouldn't be playing anymore... but a little extra drip last match would have been nice...
9.000 itens?that more itens then i expected.
@BadGhostie @dugan @romanista
I have to agree. I played the heck out of Animal Crossing on my 3DS with my wife, and while I noticed the distinct lack of content compared to New Leaf, I still enjoyed the game quite a bit and wasn't really upset by the lack of initial content.
I can understand why people were mad the game dropped with much less content compared to previous AC titles, but at the same time, it's still Animal Crossing on the big screen with much better resolution and if people are disappointed after logging 300+ hours, well I don't think those people can ever be pleased with that kind of free time.
@Not_Soos You beat me to it. Darn you.
@Friendly i agree but i also think nintendo walked a dangerous line waiting 18 months for this. fans were just left confused and frustrated over what took so long, especially with the datamine showing these features/items were in the game for months already. no doubt covid made them trip over a more proper update schedule, but at least NH finally feels like day 1 NL
Playing it now with the new content (which I thought was suppose to come out on the 5th?), gotta admit this will probably have me retire ACNL now.
It was a pleasant surprise to see Filbert show up INSIDE my house, this was something I was missing.
@Astral-Grain definitely not the way acnh considers slow-drip. the summer update had me hopeful other updates would be a similar quality, but we essentially didnt get the next big one until 15 months later
something like splatoons consistent updates wouldve been more favorable. nintendos lack of communication with free updates is always a gamble on if their approach will even be worth it
@boxyguy I agree it was dangerous to make such a glaringly unpopular decision, but look at the big picture, people are still talking about New Horizons every day because new stuff is being added. This method could be compared to how GTA V keeps adding more multiplayer content over the past several years. GTA V isn't that good of an example I guess, because the game dropped with all the content, but through re-releases, it kept adding more to justify buying it again or continue playing it even after becoming an older game. Companies want to milk their games now, rather than spending time and resources churning out title after title.
As a consumer, I'd much rather get the full value of what I pay day 1, but from a business perspective, the slow-drip of updates over years of time continually keeps the game relevant, fresh, and keeps people talking about it. I don't like it, but it's working well for them, and the positives seem to outweigh the people complaining.
@boxyguy i agree, but I also think there are perhaps reasons for this, such as that Nintendo perhaps didn’t realize what a hit it would become or the remote work.
IS NO ONE GOING TO MENTION HOW AMAZING THE IMAGE USED FOR THE ARTICLE IS!?!?
Its DATA...mining! Its genius, you guys.
@Astral-Grain Well obviously i would prefer it all day one, and then preferably they make more other updates, but I feel like some of this stuff would've been better when I was just starting up before I had tons of money so I would have more to work toward
@Desrever Well you win for noticing that. I see the "Data" part but what about 'mining'?
There's also no way to know what Nintendo's original gameplan was for releasing updates. I would bet money a lot of this was meant to be petered out in monthly drips, but covid related staffing challenges might have meant what we're seeing now; a lot of content slammed out in one grand gesture.
“ Datamining results shared on animalcrossingworld.com suggest the number of new items could be as high as 9000+.”
Vegeta, what does the datamine say about the number of items?
OVER NINE THOUSAND!
@zombi3wolf of all the new stuff, I found this really exciting haha!! Ankha popped in, and even played games 🙌🏻
@OnlyItsMeReid Is it obvious though?
Psychologically, if you play a fantastic game with fantastic features, and then 6 months later, more content is added, you appreciate it more because you didn't have it initially. If that same additional content was already included, you may not appreciate it at much, or you may not even notice it was in the game.
This reminds me of the argument that games that release with day 1 DLC are greedy because if they had the time and budget to make extra content, it should have already been included in the game. Obviously, from a consumer standpoint, that's an awful practice because you used to pay $49.99-$59.99 for a brand new game, but now we have day 1 'Ultimate Editions' that usually price around $79.99+, many of which reach into the hundreds.
Now compared to that, if a game is released at full price and then FREE updates are added throughout the months, many of which are very small changes that arguably could have been included in the game, well that's easier to stomach. Reason being, you still paid one full game price and over time, still ended up getting that full price experience, even years later. Hindsight lets you appreciate these features individually.
The thing is, if I'm paying 100% of the cost on day one, and I'm only given 60% of the game on day 1, that doesn't sit very well as a consumer. Still, you may not know the game was released with incomplete content until years later. It's definitely a more clever way to disguise not being able to meet content deadlines before a game is released.
@Astral-Grain I loved the idea of a drip feed from the beginning but I think they mishandled the concept and the potential wasn't nearly met in full, and I think that no matter how big this DLC is, it's a massive shame that they're ending it here because it could still be so much bigger. This would have been a perfect game to keep expanding for years until our islands are basically cities.
Does anyone know if you need a 5 star island to get most of the updates from version 2.0? My daughter has a 2 star island and updated her switch lite before going to bed but there seems to be no boat trip, no new apps etc etc. We tried it on my switch (with 5 star island) and I have boat trips, new apps with Nook Miles, cooking and gyroids. Anyone else had this problem?
@SuperMariCrow I think I read some people say 3 stars is where a lot of new stuff kicks in, so so if that's the case, she's close! Though I'm at 1 star since starting over and had a few new apps/app upgrades show up for Nook Miles.
@StardusterEX I feel I am missing something big. A lot of people have opted to start their island completely over and lose all progress just because of this update. Is there a benefit to starting over completely, or is this just to experience the game from the beginning with all the content included, arguable how it should have been from the beginning?
I really don't play that much these days, so it's hard for me to imagine giving up my fully upgraded house and all the items I have accumulated because it took so long to get there, and there's still a lot about the game I haven't touched yet.
@Astral-Grain Nothing too big in my case, one of my roommates just got the game and it’s their first AC game, so I started over so we could play through together.
I went to a dream island a few moments again and I was just humbled. It just oozed charm, from the island's layout itself to the owner's home, and this is before the DLC updated items. I can't wait to see what some people are inspired to do.
"the number of new items could be as high as 9000+. That's crazy"
Everyone be like:
Meanwhile in the island:
@Astral-Grain I think the 'lack of content'was more a change of direction to design, from social game... but i'm glad bresters is back;)
