This week's big release on Switch, or update to be more accurate, was version 2.0 of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. A lot of the additions in the free update have been in demand for some time, with the likes of Brewster's cafe, gyroids, Kapp'n boat trips, tons of items and a whole lot more.
There's also the Happy Home Paradise DLC, which is a charming paid add-on in which you get to flex your designing skills. You can either buy it outright or opt to sign up to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack and gain access that way, both good options if you want a meaty expansion to the game.
We've been having a lot of fun exploring the minutia of these updates, and it's terrific how many small touches there are when it comes to additional goodies like cooking and decorating. Social media is full of people having a jolly time, too, with plenty of players showing dizzying levels of commitment to collecting everything and making incredibly attractive room designs, among other things.
But, we're interested in what you think of the update and DLC. Nintendo's goal with this one (and only) 'major' update is to expand the game for newcomers and lure long term players back, do you think it's succeeded? Do you have the DLC, or are you planning to get it? So many questions...
Share your thoughts in the polls and comments below, as always.

Just restarted the game, but it's a bit hard to get back into the swing of things. I had the same issue with New Leaf.
We'll see what happens.
Have been playing the dlc all day for 2 days now + some visits to harvey’s island. Also unlocked the roost today. Really great update and dlc.
Got both the expansion pack for the NSO AND the DLC separately, and I am enjoying both so far. (didn't really have any connection issues in regards to N64 games when playing with my long-distance girlfriend... she lives in Switzerland, and I live in NJ).
The DLC for ACNH is awesome as well. Already have all but one of the facilities unlocked.
ShopTo have the DLC for a lot less than the eshop BTW. Makes the Online Expansion pack look even more like a waste of money.
Really enjoying the update. I haven't decided on the dlc yet. Maybe once I've done everything I want to do in the new update.
The 2.0 update and the expansion are just what I needed to get me back into the game. I've been enjoying the new content a lot so far
My kids are really enjoying it. So I’m happy
The update stuff is cool and all but I played the game to death for months when it came out and really can't be bothered trying to get back into it now after not playing it for over a year.
I've somehow already designed over a dozen houses. It's worrying just how much time I've put into the DLC so far.
I've been enjoying it, but it's a little sad that it's the final update.
Just trying to make the new content last as long as possible. The DLC can wait!
Been too busy this week but hoping to start playing it tonight once I’m done cleaning, walking the dog, and working out. Been excited to get back into Animal Crossing!
A year old + and haven't gone back yet....been busy covid afterwards to spend time with seasons to seasons to play it.
It's not bad. I enjoy it, but it's not even close to WOW factor. Most of it is stuff that really should've been in the base game to begin with. And there's still no sign of a shop expansion either. (If it's been datamined from the update though, please don't tell me.)
I’m really enjoying both the update and DLC so far! The DLC is so much better than I expected, and it’s nice to have it at no additional cost with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
@Ralizah theres soo much to collect, I can't imagine starting again after paying all loans. My island was a mess though so i was tempted but i opted to just renovate small sections and take it from there
@Yosher I see what u are saying, tho it’s hard for me to demand more from a game that I have spent nearly 300 hours on. Something was missing from version 1. I would have liked more interaction with things like the Pinball machine…. This would be perfect for mini and micro games.
That said, for whatever the game lacks, it will probably extend the life of the game for me for another year, so it will be hard for me to complain….
I enjoy it, but after hopping into New Leaf to get a record of my neighbors, I was disappointed to see how many cool furniture items (like the Arwing, the Splatoon stuff, and the Triforce) didn't make the cut into New Horizons. I'm also sad we won't be getting the Shrunk dance emote. Alas!
I'm loving the free and paid DLC. I have been playing AC almost every day since it came out. This update has added so much it'll keep me going for a long time.
I'm enjoying the Happy Home Designer expansion, but it still feels like they could have streamlined the content even more.
Not the DLC, but the stuff now located on Harv's island. That extra step of travel to use those shops, instead of giving us new buildings for the already large island sandbox feels so strange... typical Animal Crossing, but still strange.
I'm both liking the update, and a little disappointed that a lot of the content I enjoyed from New Leaf hasn't returned, and now definitively will never return. I'll probably still stick mainly to New Leaf, but I'm gonna be checking in on my New Horizons island a lot more often with the stuff they added.
its honestly a little overwhelming how packed just the free dlc is alone. this is exactly the kinda stuff that shouldve been rolled out over the past year and not all at once, its like we're getting 2 games at once with both this and the dlc coming out the same day
but acnh finally feels like a full package game, on par with acnl but with more fleshed out features. theres always things i could nitpick at like minigames, events, and nintendo items not returning, but its nice that they finally finished this game after the abysmal silence on updates
I did the stretching once last night and hit my Joycon into my ceiling. Haven't done that since Wii Sports tennis. I wish they could put in a few more "games" like that, surely the people working there must have like a thousand different ideas for simple stuff like that.
Not getting the DLC, that seems life absorbing endless, I'll just play 30 minutes a day for the next few weeks before moving on.
I’ve been enjoying it for the most part. Haven’t done too much yet. I got Brewster, got a few recipes and and buying those shops on Harv’s island.
I've jumped back in for the first time in a long time, I'm tempted to start a new island or I was until I saw how much was in the dlc. I've been really enjoying that with the Switch online expansion pass. Overall I think its great
I've been having a blast with the new update and DLC. The amount of items they added to the game is amazing. The spark of creativity has inspired me to gradually overhaul my island design. I love cooking as cooked dishes are well received by villagers.
After a year break, my enthusiasm for ACNH has increased.
@rjejr as I mentioned above… the potential for mini games was huge. Either a separate entry or for the next one would be really cool.
@Helloworld117 Yeah, I would love for the game to be supported longer. Oh well, at least the final update was well worth the wait.
I'm pleasantly surprised by how fun both DLC's are thus far. 😄
I'm thinking about buying Animal Crossing. I've only played Wild World briefly and never really got into it but I'm pretty sure it'll go differently this time. I've loved my time with Stardew Valley and I enjoy creating /designing stuff so I'm confident I'll get a lot of of ACNH. I'd say now is a pretty good time to jump in too what with all the extra content that's been added. Plus I have the Expansion Pack so there will be tons for me to discover.
I think I'll buy 2 game vouchers for my birthday and get AC and Shin Megami Tensai V with them.
Yay, at last we can drink a cup of coffee with Shrunk. Missed him
@Grandiajet same here. I only took a week off back in August of 2020, but after that it has been daily. I love ACNH so much~
Very rarely do I ever find Nintendo's DLCs to be worth the money. I would definitely buy them, but if I were to stuck to choosing, this would likely make the cut for me.
this poll lacks an option - I own the game, but I won't play the expansion even though I payed for it through NSO subscription XD
I didn't expect the DLC to be so adorable, but it is!
Why isn't there an "I own AC:NH but I definitely won't get the DLC" option?
Really digging the expansion so far. Everything from the new tasks, items and characters. Took a break from the game this past summer after playing it a everyday since launch and it's great to get back into the swing of things.
I don’t know why the poll option acts like NSO expansion pack owners should be ashamed or something.
The option: what's an animal crossing?
The answer: the road.
I really like the update. The new items and features have disrupted the daily routine I had settled into on my island, but that's not a bad thing. I'm currently in the process of rearranging structures — something I haven't done in many months — to make room for a farm.
Happy Home Paradise is every bit as charming as its predecessor, although I find it curious that it feels somewhat disconnected from the main game. Instead of building onto your own island, you're building up a distant vacation resort that has its own currency (Poki instead of Bells), but at least you can bring items back to your main island unlike the 3DS game.
All things considered, I'm very pleased with what Nintendo has done with New Horizons.
Not sure how to get the new features
I got happy home paradise but I have so much to do I'm saving it for now
Gotta make this last lol
I'm really enjoying the update. I love the climbing vines and all the stuff on harv's island. And the storage shed.
Ironically I didn't get the expansion pack because I haven't been playing AC much and now that 2.0 has re-grabbed my interest I'm not buying the DLC because I know I might get the expansion pack someday in the future if it improves.
Actually...yeah! Now that I've been playing a bit, it actually feels complete now. No shortage of things to do
I am. I do wish I had better luck with my Nook's Cranny having new items for sale.
And I didn't bother saving up any Nook Miles. So I've just been doing little task to collect some
I like it. I actually played ACNH again to see the new update and camera features.
I haven't got the DLC yet, but I'm really enjoying the update
Missing an option: "Yes! I bought the DLC from a well-known key reseller because it was less than Nintendo are asking on the eshop" 😂
@Browny People wanted the roaming sellers to be more permanent. Unless you want to be making room on your island for their stores, this is the best solution to have them on another island. I can't see any other way Nintendo could had done this.
@rockodoodle Nintendo likes to forget Wii U was a thing, and they all really like to forget that Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival was a game. It wasn't very much of a game - I own it and I've played it - but it was a game, and some of that could have been put in ACNH. 1 board, that's all I ask. 🤷♂️
I'm having a blast with all the added content, the Happy Home paradise DLC has been a great purchase.
What’s with the s**ty NSO expansion “jokes”?
So far I'm very pleased. More than anything I am happy for all of the new furniture items added. New Horizons was lacking so badly in this category, and it really squandered its potential.
But... not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine that they would add as much as they did. It's mind-blowing! But in a very, very, VERY good way. People's islands are going to be decorated in so many unique ways (and not always because of the making items look like something else technique that was used so much on NH islands before now).
All of this time I was complaining about the lack of furniture. All of that time they must have been working hard on this update. And while I can't be blamed for not expecting it, I do want to say WOW. Great job to them. This is seriously impressive. It blew me out of the water. lol
It's ok, I was expecting it to be much better though , with a home and store expansion (rooms have no expansion to be bigger) and the store is meh... as the first expansion in older AC that you had only for a while. Also, the shops in Harv's island? And have to travel every time? Like Wii's game? Gets boring for me to travel every day just to check. Also still nothing to do and play in multiplayer, I was waiting for an island with games like New Leaf. They destroyed multiplayer, you can only show your island and nothing else. The update is what it should have been day 1 and all these missing to be in the updates. Still better nothing but a missing opportunity for the whole game.
Within the first ten minutes of it Boone came over and complained about my cockroaches and left. I used to pick flees off that nasty boy this update should be called Animal Crossing: New Judgement 2.0. >
Some early thoughts:
1) I love the fact they finally gave us some additional rides and attractions to go with that teacups ride. I liked having to squeeze all of it into the sparse remaining free space on my island less so.
Considering all the new items and content (and some of it is LARGE), ACNH really could have used that rumored ability to enlarge players' home islands. I realize this is why some folks are considering starting over from scratch (my humble advice: DON'T, because some of that stuff, such as Blue Roses or completing museum exhibits, takes an insane amount of time and effort to acquire or unlock, and all that has to be done all over again when you reboot your island), but I can assure you there's more stuff now to place on your island than there is sufficient space to do so, at the very least while still looking good and allowing for comfortable movement around your island. Looking at my own right now I can say with confidence it could absolutely use being at least one-third larger. That's both a testament to the sheer amount of stuff in the game to collect as well as a ceiling that those of us who are "completists" will inevitably hit hard and painfully.
2) The Happy Home Paradise DLC is so far fun, but the jury is out as to its long-term replayability. I've completed a few jobs, and much like Harv's Island (back when probably no one ever had a reason to visit it outside of those wedding season collectibles and character posters), placing items around a yard or a house interior gets repetitive in a hurry. I'll wait and see how unlocking the buildings on Paradise Planning's home island shakes out before rendering a final verdict, though. With any luck it could be the closest thing we'll get to actually having a second island to build on and flesh out.
@riChchestM thanks for that I’ve just went straight there and bought it for my son after reading your comment! 😅
@OorWullie happy birthday for whenever it is! I see you’ve been playing Dusk if you like it, I imagine I will too
Animal Crossing New Horizons is now my favorite game of all time.
Love the way that the article jokingly makes it look like a criminal offence to have the paradise DLC as part of the online expansion pack.
Both the DLC and update got me fully back into the game. Before I was just playing a few minutes daily, usual routine. Now I'm actually enjoying myself again.
Loving it! Redd having a shop on Harv's Island is making it much easier to complete my art collection, and the return of the Kapp'n has been more touching than I expected. The best thing, however, is Cyrus. Now I can have all the furniture colours and variations I've wanted for a while, including the shark-themed pop-up book.
As for Happy Home Paradise, it's actually the first bit of DLC I've ever bought, and makes for great escapism.
@zombi3wolf you say "now I am actually enjoying myself again" which implies you were playing it while not enjoying yourself?
That reminds me of Pocket Card Jockey on 3ds. Good game, but the gambling mechanic over rode the skill mechanics to where I was playing without enjoying.
@riChchestM follow up to your post, apologies if this has been answered, will the code work on North American Switch eShops?
@flibblesan do share please
@Ks123 cd keys (dot) com - its on the front page. EU only though, sorry. I don't know anybody selling a code for North America.
There would have been so much backlash if they brought the dlc as a separate game, glad someone at Nintendo saw some sense
the 2.0 update of Animal Crossing New Horizon is amazing, i loving the Cooking mechanic with a depth of the Crafting mechanic, Harvey Island is very handy with all the NPC on it.
@Ks123 Best bet is to avoid key resellers. Most of them deal to some extent in keys that were illegitimately acquired.
I already finished the DLC…
I'm having a good time, but as with many aspects of this game, there are a lot of cool ideas with abysmal execution.
I find Kappn's islands monotonous and pointless besides the gyroids and maybe getting some vines and crops if you're lucky. Once you've gotten all the crops and vines you need, which won't take long, it's basically just a slog to get a single gyroid.
You can't expand the rooms in your house once you unlock the ability.
You can't hang items on partitions.
The shop is still stuck at the second expansion. Remember how cool the shops in the last games were? Nintendo forgot.
You can't actually chill in the Roost. As soon as you're done with your 5 second coffee drinking animation the game forces you out of your seat, and the big tables are reserved for amiibos so you can't sit there. I hope cool things unlock with Brewster over time because as it is, it's another underwhelming experience once the excitement of new dialogue with old NPC's wears thin.
Of the several polishing effects, only a couple are practical, and they'll appear very overused in your house in no time.
That said:
There are many new beautiful items and sets.
Designing houses based on themes is fun, though I'm putting less and less effort into it now that I'm 18 houses in.
A few cool new songs and a few cool new villagers.
I don't know. It's nice having an excuse to be back in the game. Time will tell if it's enough to keep people engaged for more than a couple weeks. I hope it is, but I've had the sense that the game's full potential would only ever be half realized for over a year now and I don't think this will remedy that.
So this is officially the last update?
So just over 1 in 4 people playing Happy Home Paradise are playing due to NSO Expansion Pack. I would imagine that’s a number Nintendo will be very happy with, given that’s without including people who got it for N64 and Mega Drive / Genesis anyway.
@romando patches and incremental updates such as seasonal events may still occur, but Ver 2.0 and Happy Home Paradise were the last main updates yes. In the same way Welcome Amiibo and Happy Home Designer were on 3DS.
@Bentendo1609 Thanks for clarifying.
I felt the game had lost its soul compared to New Leaf, so I stopped playing a long time ago. I will likely never buy another game in the series... Life's too short!
@AmplifyMJ You will love it for sure. It looks, sounds and plays superbly. Well, other than an issue with the gyro controls which I'm sure will be fixed. The level design, theme and enemies are all really well done.
If you do buy it, let me know what you think.
I start by saying the update was full of surprises. It's a very wonderful update. I especially enjoy the boat ride to other islands once a day. Singing and all.
I love all the new gifts, and the garden goodies. Crafting recipes is fun. Harvey's island is worth going to now. The update is full of fun and exciting treats for hours of fun.
I however, must say that I found something very disappointing. Very very very disappointing.
On all ovens, and on all kitchen sinks, the oven doesn't turn on anymore. And the sink water doesn't turn on anymore. I am devastated. It's really sad. So please work that kink out of the system. Please. Please. Please.
Good day too everyone.
