Any FIFA fans amongst us will likely be aware of Lionel Messi's recent departure from Barcelona; one of football's biggest stars, Messi's been making headlines all around the world over the past few days as fans eagerly awaited his next move. The deal's now been done – Messi's a Paris Saint-Germain player – and the French football league has decided to celebrate with... a Super Mario tribute?
The league's English-language account posted a Mario-inspired clip to social media to mark the star's arrival, complete with 8-bit sound effects and some coin (well, trophy) collecting for good measure. As a finishing touch, the French flag appears at the end as Messi makes it to the goal, referencing the moment that Mario turns Bowser's flag into his own at the end of a level.
Why did they use Super Mario? Who knows... But @Abbaton911 probably puts it best:
We now have a sudden urge to boot up Mario Strikers Charged. Who fancies a game?

Would not it be NOE calling its solicitors?
I don't know much about Football, can someone explain why he left FC Barcelona?
M+L being the letters that apply both to the bros as the soccerplayer.
Lionel arrived at a new castle collecting mucho coins there.
Lionel being afraid to go into his dark mansion alone at night?
It’s farfetched.
On the topic of FIFA, it would be nice if EA made up for the lazy rehashed installments with Switch-exclusive content (like the Mii modes we got during the Wii era to make up for the lack of content parity with other platforms) such as optional Nintendo themed uniform sets, a themed stadium or two, and maybe even Nintendo based teams (one male, one female) with each member at least bearing a vague resemblance to characters from their respective franchises. And if that would cause too many licensing issues, then simply revisit the Mii modes from the days of old.
EA could easily strip away the "Legacy Edition" stigma by adding at least SOME new features, and it would go a long way in instilling goodwill among the fan base, and giving owners of the beefier console versions a reason to also own the handheld installments.
If only they would make a bloody effort.
I understand why people feel such contempt for EA's laziness, and for the reasons above, they really have no excuses, especially being as big as they are in the industry. I am nevertheless glad that we're still getting updated rosters/kits, if nothing else, and people can vote with their wallets accordingly. Perhaps ironically, the FIFA games on Switch are still (more or less) the best handheld football games on the market, and they're usually available for dirt-cheap about a month or so after release (you'd have to be bonkers to pay full price, even if you have no other FIFA game in your possession).
Of course, hardcore fans who would prefer to game at home with the new bells and whistles (and UHD graphics) need not apply.
Never understood the idea of leaving your team to play for a different one. Pay or no pay, it’s pretty scummy and completely defeats the purpose of sports teams IMO.
@steely_pete La Liga had new rules concerning the financial status of clubs.
Because the financial status of Barcelona is horrible (huge debt) they didn’t have the money to pay Messi’s massive salary.
Now he’s at PSG, earning 40 million a year and receiving signing money and bonusses on top of that. Yes, The football competitions are completely ruined by these few clubs with rich (corrupt?) owners who just sign whoever they want as long as they win.
It’s one of the reasons I love looking at the sports at the olympics. Those sports still seem ‘pure’ with true sportsmen and -women.
Seeing football and mario - 2 of my favourite things together - makes me very happy.
@Friendly
oh wow, that sounds dumb. Thanks for the explanation though
@Friendly Thankfully, all their money couldn't create the European Super League. Hooray for the football family!
@chapu2006 true. But well, it more or less already is there. 2/3 of the teams in the Champions League are locked in on a yearly basis….
They just want to get even more rich so they thought of a Super League….. (bizar….)
@Friendly let's not pretend a few mega rich clubs are the problem as money has been at the forefront of football for so long now, then the elite clubs decided to pull up the drawbridge (FFP) to try and stop teams with rich owners challenging them. It won't change unless something unfeasible like a wage cap or transfer fee limit comes in but I don't see how it can.
@Silly_G One problem with that proposition
That would require actually putting effort into FIFA on Switch, and EA obviously doesn't like that
@BeautyandtheBeer + players themselves are culpable too making stupid wages and feel necessary to evade taxes aswell
yeah that was really random action
@Funneefox I mean, players definitely receive way too much money in most occasions, however, I don't know about you but "pay or not pay" wouldn't be an option in my case. Just because you like your team and the sport doesn't mean that you are gonna work for free. Also, moving to other teams allows for more experience and recognition. If you are one of the best in the world, you want to compete and play with the best. Not saying that this was the case in this situation as it was simply a matter of money, but there's good reasons why players move to other teams.
Seeing my favorite player in the world mixed with Super Mario, makes me very happy.
5-10 years from now if not sooner it wouldn't surprise me clubs like Chelsea, City, PSG and others who have had a fairly fast influx of cash have similar issues. Sad reality of modern sports :/ I like Arsenal and they've pretty much gone that way already, try to stablize financially while fighting to be a mid-table team. (also I know this isn't related to the article, just Barca's mess).
@Funneefox I take it you will only be working one job all your life then?
@plusjkb Roy1303 already gave me some more insight into the process and changed my mindset
