Holy cow! Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town might be the best-selling Story of Seasons title so far, although don't make us do the whole "what counts as a Story of Seasons game" thing right now because it is Friday and we are SLEEPY.
Marvelous Japan, the publisher for Story of Seasons (or Bokujo Monogatari, as it's called over there) in the East, posted to their blog today, stating that Pioneers of Olive Town has sold a total of 700,000 copies worldwide. Sure, some of those might be people who bought the digital edition because their Deluxe Edition physical release has been delayed, but still - that's a huge number of sales for a relatively niche game.
It's hard to say exactly if Story of Seasons' sales make it the best-selling BokuMono game of all time, because sales figures for Japan are easy enough to get, but North America, and Europe are a little hard to find. According to the Video Game Sales wiki, the first Story of Seasons game in 2014 sold a total of around 450,000 between North America and Japan, and Trio of Towns sold 220,000 in Japan.
But even if it's not the best-selling Story of Seasons game, it's still quite a feat for a farming game to be creeping towards the big One Million Sales mark, right? Well, Stardew Valley sold 400k in its first two weeks, and hit 10 million sales at the start of 2020, so... there's quite a way to go, but it's never a bad thing for more people to be falling in love with farming.

Pretty impressive to be honest! I am kind of interested in it myself. I might get one of the older games though! I haven't played any of the Story of Seasons games yet!
I've got it. It's fine, that is all but I'm finding it hard to be bothered to play it anymore. I've been spoilt by Stardew Valley and that game is still outclassing anything before or after. I'd say they need to do something new with SoS but its selling well so it won't and we'll get another "will this do?" game next year.
Littlewood is much better, everyone get that instead. It's far cheaper and has much more care and thought.
(Looking at the cow from the screenshot above)
Gosh, is that a cow or a hippo ? 😆
I dropped the game after about 6 hours. It just isn't very good.
@Anti-Matter Hippopoto...milk?
I'm having quite a good time with it. I'm glad it's doing so well.
I am one of those sales, finally broke down and ordered it. I might not play it for a while, though. I have got to finish some games before I start yet another one.
It’s a great game from my experience and I can’t wait to get off work to get back to my farm. Of course it’s not perfect and I really hope Marvelous makes some QoL changes to the makers, dialogue, festival and overall general performance. But I don’t think I’ve been this hooked since Trio of Towns
I went in with super-low expectations after all the negative comments about the game I saw online, but so far I’m really enjoying it! Yes, the frame-rate dips quite a bit when I’m in the farm area, but it doesn’t affect my gameplay at all, and I’m not too fussed about the bland dialogue since I usually spend my first few in-game years focusing on the farm before I branch out into getting friendly with the villagers, which means it’ll have probably been patched by the time I get there. Still not as good as ToT, but a decent farming sim overall!
I think releasing at the same time as Harvest Moon really helped them. Putting a choice out there makes some people feel like they have to make one.
Sheep to slaughter???
What an odd milestone to announce. If they had given it another couple of days, it is likely to reach the magic million.
Lol best selling game for the worst entry for the series yikes. Hopefully the buyer retention for next game still there.
It's got some problems but I'm enjoying it. The pluses outweigh the minuses, imho. Whilst I admire the work one guy has put into it, I just don't care for SDV. The art style puts me off.
@Anti-Matter Bovinapatumus
@hadrian Then don't bother coming back, keep on playing Stardew.
I started it yesterday and played a few hours. The game's legit.
Probably because of how many ad campaigns they have/people they have sponsored to share info on their game, were they that afraid of 'Harvest Moon'?
I'm tempted to buy it, but I just jumped back into Stardew (both on PC and Switch), maybe I'll wait for a sale.
Just got my copy. The framerate drops are a little annoying but I am enjoying my time so far.
This is my first Story of Seasons game, and despite some of the issues, I've been really enjoying it so far, so I'm glad it's doing well! The general dialogue of the NPCs is quite boring, but I've liked the heart scenes so far so I'll just keep giving gifts to people so i can see them.
