How long till we get a Mario follow up to Odyssey... Maybe they could remaster Mario 64, it would be awesome to play that game properly on a portable and with annoying camera angles fixed..
When you buy 'Physical' it's because you don't want to bother with a multi gigabyte download. Given that internet speed have vastly improved vis-a-vis a few years ago, it still takes a big chunk of most internet plans (not everyone is on unlimited plan).
Why Rockstar and 2k (they are one conglomerate, aren't they?) games require multi gigabyte download is not optimal. Their SDK doesn't seem optimized for the Switch...
What about Don't Knock Twice? I don't know if it is a good game or not, since I haven't bought/played it but enough people seem to have bought it for it to appear on the eshop best seller list...
Oxenfree is tops for me for Halloween game of this year...
Lovely game. I doesn't stand a candle when compared with Odyssey but a good game in it's own right. Bought it digital, if only to reward the developers for not making another pixelated 2D platformer.
If it had arrived a month before, this could have sold a lot of copies, but now it will probably be lost in the crowd and the aftermath of Odyssey. Still, hoping they make money off the game...
Lovely.... Except how many original Snes owners out there? Most have them in their storage and doubt will dig them out for these. The market should be small, that will not make these cartridges profitable for them.
The one thing going for them is the upcoming retrocade console...
Definitely not a "9" game. More like a "6"or "7". It's not a bad game, but not great. A brutal first hour, where unfair monster abounds, a stupid mechanic where you have to grind for your health (they should have adopted Symphony of the Night's mechanic or refilling your health at save stations!) , when grinding is not fun, get 5% back , hit an enemy lose 20%. I don't despise difficult games {like Shovel Knight}, when it is fair, and skill will eventually get you through. This game first hour is unnecessarily difficult, when zipping enemies, disappearing ledges, and low powered ammo will have you wanting to throw your controller if only your Switch is not attached to it (portable mode).
It is not polished enough to warrant a "9". the mini map while you play is useless. The main map is better but doesn't show where the connecting points or entrance to rooms are, even after you accessed them, so you get save boxes, where the entrance could be anyone of the four sides. This kind of little details is what separate good from great.
Apologizes for being so pessimistic, just that my expectation was way higher, further heightened by this review, then played the game proper, and realized that games from the real 16-bit era like Aliens played better...
I do know that reviews are a subjective thing, just wanted to tell my own experience with the game.
Is game streaming covered by copyright's fair use? If it isn't then, any publisher could force those videos off youtube (or other video site) since, it's clearly their IP they are streaming...
As for me, I rather read a spoiler free review, or just the score itself. After all, the joy of discovering things is one of the fun in a Mario game. I get back to walkthroughs on my second playthrough and find what I'd miss...
While I know many of the games (especially on Switch) are fairly new, Discounts on the eShop, has always seem miniscule when compared to that on Sony's store where games could get slash 90%. Not enough to get me to buy on titles I passed at full price.
Maybe Nintendolife could help by coming up with a separate rotating list of games you'd recommend. Sure, there's a review section but few people access those. A dedicated section on the front page with underrated games would be a nice way to help indies... Or maybe that's what ads are for?
Still, with the glut of games releasing each week, it would be harder to maintain the momentum once it slipped off the 'new' list, especially if it didn't make the best seller list. Hope Nintendo will increase the best seller list from the current 15 to 25 or more, that way more titles will get featured - a quick fix until they revamped the eshop.
Happy for the indies that supported the platform and helped it grow in the initial months. They are reaping the rewards.
Now, we await how Stardew Valley sales compared to the other platforms...
Nintendo knows they are not launching the Switch from a position of strength, so they make a few key decisions which they are reaping the rewards : *Making the unit region-free, effectively making the world the market for every piece of software. *Using the same x86 architecture as other platforms, and support for unity engine, making port from pc easier, resulting in a quick stream of indie games, which resulted in at least having one game worth considering almost every week.
Developers should consider giving an initial discount to eshop buyers and charge full price for retail, if that is what making it more expensive for them.
Maybe a Nintendolife should adopt a chance for a re-review if developers could fix most of the problems and significantly affect the quality of the game. Seems, there is a backlash for them giving big developers a free pass by having a score pending on big games.
@OorWullie Reread your comment and found that you mentioned that it is the same price on Steam, so it has nothing to do with going Physical (reason for the edit).
Still like you'd said, these types of games is worth $15 or less, now that the Switch is getting inundated with good games, I think developers (unless they are aaa developers) need to adjust their pricing, if they wanted an initial burst of sales to get them on the best seller chart. The way eShop display the games, once it get bumped off the new list (and the game is not on the best seller list), sales probably nosedives...
Seriously, where does anyone find that much time to play all these games. Just those pair of 3DS release will occupy me until Super Mario Odyssey arrives...
But I will probably spring for Stardew Valley, Axiom Verge, and Metal Slug X...
Since Nindies helped the Switch in the early months when the software picking were slim (and rewarded accordingly with robust sales), a small section for older aaa indies (rotating frequently between titles) would keep sales flowing for them... Titles like Fast Rmx or Wonder Boy are buried by the avalanche of new titles, so this feature would keep them relevant.
Have been playing Virtual console games on my 3ds for sometime, it's only now that I noticed that if you play in pixel - perfect mode (with Gameboy border), the screen seems lightly recessed (as would have been on the original Gameboy). Nice 3d effect on the 3ds...
A bit buggy, but will probably be patched soon... To be expected perhaps for an original game that debuted on the Switch (Not a port of a Steam game as many other indie games are...)
Bought it, to support the devs (once the game falls off the charts, it will be harder for it to become a success). Didn't regret it one bit.
I got mine too. But living in Asia means the price will be higher than the SRP. Paid @$100, but it will never sells at SRP here, so I guess the price is fair enough (compared to scalpers at eBay).
Seems there were enough stocks to satisfy most of those who wanted one. Reading the comments, it seems nine out of ten who commented got one. So the situation is surely better than NES Classic Mini last year. And with promised replenishments throughout the year, those who wanted one should never really have to pay more than SRP as Reggie said...
I am still baffled by what that 5GB save contains if not graphics and sound files, no matter how many players or teams there are , the numeric data should not be more than a few hundred MBs at most, heck even the full Windows was around 4GB or something... Then they could have zip it up and the data would be even less..
Nintendo should either launch cloud saves (included in their paid service, perhaps), so we can swap games in and out, the way most people with an iPad had become accustomed to, or sell a more premium version of the Switch (Switch Pro?). With saves files (or more likely game installs) that clock in at 5Gb, it won't take long before that 32GB is used up...
The initial price is too high. Unless it got 9s on various review sites, I doubt many will bite the bullet and buy a game with Retro graphics and looks like something that's 0.99 or freemium on their phones.
Yes, Many Nintendo fans are now trading up to its more superior handheld (Switch), but a game that fills a niche (like 80s Overdrive) should still find an audience on the 3DS if priced right.
And no matter how good Mutant Mudd is, the developer is still no Miyamoto or Suzuki, where the name command a premium. Still, will probably buy this once it gets on sale...
I think Sonic Mania could have topped the chart, given the cheap price, rave reviews, and it being multiplatform. Sonic Mania, like Crash Bandicoot, is about nostalgia, so while Crash is on it's second month, Sonic Mania, just launched... So sales should be more robust...
Nintendo should have released this next year not 2017. Come October, the hype will be on this console not Super Mario Odyssey... They could have package all those game and sell it as a limited time exclusive on the Switch, and it would have make more money and supercharge demand for the Switch this holiday season...
And they are putting money on the table, they could have charge it for $99, and it will still sell out...
AS much as I wanted one, they should not release it this year. It will take the thunder away from Switch's first Christmas.
Instead of putting a Switch under the Christmas tree, some might just get a SNES MIni, that would be just a one time gain for Nintendo, while the Switch promises repeated profit for the big N in terms of it's own software and licensing fees from third parties.
So I really hope Nintendo will wise up and not release the SNES Mini this year. Wait until the Switch is on the wane, or when PS5 is due out, then put out the SNES Mini to counter-program against a rival. That would be a marketing stroke of genius.
They should focus their energy on the Switch, after all, if it fails, then there might not be another own platform (ie Sega). They should keep an eye on VR but not expend any of their resources on it at the moment. Maybe in a few years, when the Switch 3 has enough horsepower to run 4k, then they could make a head gear, so you can either run it docked, undocked, and in a headset (like Samsung Galaxy VR)
The old My Nintendo was good (even if you take out the physical rewards)... But the relaunched one (that's around for a year or so) is not worth the effort... The only game that's really free is the Picross (Zelda) and Warioware DS, the discounts are meager (30% at most... look at Playstation Plus, where older games are often offered for up to 80-90% off, sure PS+ is paid, but they do offer free games every month). Not to mention, that most of the discount are for games that a devoted Nintendo loyalist most probably already bought...
I lost both Platinum / Gold points and don't care about it anymore, because it is just not worth it... Online Game guides that are truncated, wallpapers that are bested by many fansite efforts, and digital goods for Miitomo (that I don't care). Not worth the effort... Not a real reward for Nintendo loyalist... If they do not make great games, I'd moved elsewhere but they still do..... So, here I am.
A port of the original Nights into Dreams for the Switch.
Panzer Dragoon II, RPG, and all the X-box Panzer Dragoons to next gen systems, although might be wishful thinking, given that the RPG's source code is said to be lost and all the other Panzers would cost a lot to update, and it is a well-loved franchise that probably did not sold too well...
Maybe, it's not 2 million per platform, but 1 m to make 6-levels, but 800,000 to make one more? Then 500,000 more for localization? Are they hiring top notch actor/ress for the job? Then 500,000 for a difficulty level. The price doesn't seem consumerate to the first one million. Too high a diminishing returns...
One million to make the game (6 levels), 800,000 for one backer-only level, and two million each to port to additional platforms.
Something fishy when it is twice as expensive to port than make the game proper.
With all three platforms supporting Common engines like Unreal, porting is much easier albeit still time consuming but surely not more than it takes to make the game.
It's even in a niche game category, so good luck to them with the Kickstarter.
Let's be real, nobody will buy them unless it plays illegal ROMS. Gameboy (or GBA games) uses battery saves which would be depleted by now (you can tinker with them by soldering a new battery but not everyone can do that).
Except for the Mortal Kombat series (who bought the rights when Williams/Midway gone under?), it's all Sega IP, wish they cast a wider net ( I pay $10 more) for some Konami games (Castlevania: Bloodlines, Contra: Hardcore, RocketKnight Adventures), or Capcom (Strider), or Treasure - Sega own the IP to their Sega Games (Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, Dynamite Headdy), or Disney/Sega (licensing issues again! Aladdin, Mickey in Castle (and World) of Illusion), and Namco (Rolling Thunder II, Splatterhouse II), EA (Desert Strike, NBA Live or it's predecessors, PGA Tour Golf, Madden (before the curse)) and those shooters (Gaiares, Thunderforce II, III, IV (Sega own those IPs now),etc . Oh...those were the days...
@YoshiAngemon In Asia, there's plenty of NES or Genesis portables that had flash games on it and the ROMs on a separate cartridge, those ROMS will shows up (on Menu) when you insert the cartridge, although I am not sure if they are really in the cartridge or it serves as a switch. I can't think of a good reason other than ROMs are copyrighted stuffs, and in countries with more strict IP enforcement. they could keep the cartridge if the legality is questioned.
They really should forgo the non-sega public domain games, since they have an official license. Those were mostly included with no-official consoles as a mean to justify their existence on store shelves, I believe...
@Bengals76
I do agree with FTL that Nintendo is wise not to include a web browser, as it is first and foremost a gaming machine, including a full fledged browser will attract comparison with the iPad and Android tablets which excel in that department, and Nintendo probably will not.
