Re: Feature: "I Was A Bit Nervous At First" - Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Producer Talks Reimagining An RPG Classic

I had Dragon Warrior I-IV on the NES when I was a kid. I'm who these remakes should be for. Saying that someone is not the audience for this when you have no clue who they are is short sighted. Nostalgia is what sells this series. Those NES games understood the difference between boy and girl. I won't be buying this and I hope SE loses a lot of money. Same goes for the Trails series. When you decide to edit for modern audiences you are just caving to people who hate video games.

Re: Review: Metal Slug Tactics (Switch) - A Good Shot At Trying Something New

The roguelike-lite or whatever it is features killed this for me. The graphics look great but I was expecting it to be more of a TRPG and it doesn't appear to be so. Add small text to that mix and it's a pass. I'm still bummed NIS and GUST seems to do the small text thing now too. Between the switch and steamdeck thats a lot of users that they are screwing over.

Re: Review: SNK Vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos (Switch) - A Great-Looking But Painfully Average Fighter

As far as difficulty, I'd recommend turning it down in the settings and you "should" be able to beat it. I beat it on my first play through with Terry and only died once on the last boss. I think Capcom got flack for this on their last SF port where they used the harder arcade ports. I'd probably prefer an easier setting but it is what it is which is still better than Geese Howard on the original Fatal Fury (RAGING QUIT).

I like KOF XIII better but this one is ok in my book. I try to support these as I'd like to see more come out like a Fatal Fury Anthology or Capcom vs SNK or neo geo battle coliseum

Re: SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos Limited Run Games Switch Physical Release Revealed

Maybe I'm the silly one but when I was a teenager I saved every penny I could bagging groceries and bought a Neo Geo and a few games. This was back in the 90s. For those of us that experienced this back then, it's a nice piece of nostalgia. The game may not be perfect but I think it's fun. I've also gotten the snapbox releases for Samurai Shodown and KOF XIII and it's just a nice addition for fans. I'd really love a Fatal Fury collection like the SS one. Maybe not the best game but good memories none-the-less.

I've always had good luck with LRGs. I've also ordered from pixnlove and they do a great job too.

Re: Feature: Is 'Trails Through Daybreak' The Fresh Beginning The Trails Series Needs?

@mikegamer I believe there is a summary in Cold Steel III. You don't need to play zero or azure to follow the story. They do put some context into what's going on but it's not needed. I did CSIII, CSIV, zero, azure, reverie. My favorite was CSIV. If you are playing CSIII and you are in the dark on a few events it kind of sucks until the end where everything comes together. And it's a long wait to get there.

Re: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Switch Update Adding Performance Mode

philwhite

The game is honesty not that great and the performance issues just add to the negatives. I like physical releases but I picked up the digital version because of the hypetrain. The characters are annoying, the bosses have huge difficulty spikes over normal enemies, and dungeons are too long. With random encounters and grinding it just screams waste my time. Now seeing that a physical game is released broken as well is just sad.

Re: Review: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (Switch) - An Immersive JRPG With Some Real Problems

I think a 6 is justified. Maybe even a 5. I played for a few hours and was disappointed. The menus are laggy, the animation when moving stutters, the characters are annoying, and for god's sake can you use a smaller font. It's unreadable in handheld mode. I also did not like the lack of direction. Go find some peeps. And no town names or hints are given. The map is useless. Maybe the story unfolds later but it does nothing to pull me in. I've played the original suikoden games through several times and enjoyed them. Not so with this.

Re: Best Trails / Kiseki Games On Nintendo Switch

You don't need to play the first games to get started. cs3 has a summary of the previous games included that tells some of the backstory. I started with cs3, cs4, zero, azure, reverie. For those new to the series, I'd recommend the crossbell games first as you get a little background into cs3. That all being said I'd still like cs 1 and 2.

Re: Koei Tecmo And Gust Announcing New Atelier Game Next Week

philwhite

I like Escha and Logy as it had both the male a female leads. It was neat seeing both sides of the story although I think they could have made the paths a bit more tailored to each character. As for Ryza, I like aspects of all three of them. I wasn't a huge fan of the open world in 3 but it did have the most options for movement. Overall I would say the atelier games are fairly conservative for the most part. Relationships are mostly friendships, nothing is really shocking, and they just make for fun light hearted games. I'd like another Escha/Logy type game but I'm fine with the current state too.

Re: Atelier Ryza 3 Gets A New Update, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

philwhite

I'm nearing the end on 3 and for the most part it's been a good ride. That being said I liked 1 and 2 better. They were much more straight forward. For 1 and 2 I could beat on my own but I've had to check the net on three a few times for harder quests. Harder as in poorly written. I only had one hang up on 2. I don't like the enemies leveling with me or always running toward me either. There are also some materials that seem like unobtanium. Overall a fun game with a few caveats.

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th April (North America)

I feel like the FF games aren't even the best remasters. They did a few with higher res graphics that they canned in favor of these. Its just a little weird and the price is too high for what it is. They could have included the different reskins of the game at this price. I'd maybe pick it up at $30.

Re: Best Of 2022: Mecha And Memories - How 16-Bit Nostalgia Influenced SNES-Style JRPG 'Chained Echoes'

philwhite

It was my mistake for not checking the rating being M when buying it. I'd prefer this content wasn't there. I let my son watch a lot of the games I play but not this one. It was still a good game but I think all of the adult content (foul language, murdering kids, etc.) was unnecessary and added nothing to the story. I think the game was so hyped up as a 16 bit continuation type RPG, that the M rating was overshadowed.

Again, not taking any sides here. The game is rated M so anyone who objects should have known what they were getting into. That being said I don't buy games like GTA or Call of Duty either. I prefer more family oriented content.

Re: Soapbox: This SNES-Style RPG Is The Biggest And Best Surprise Of 2022

philwhite

I think the leveling was a bit weird but if you did the extra quests it isn't bad. Difficulty was adjustable which made for a good balance. The puzzles start off ok but get pretty frustrating towards the end. The game has a lot of bonus content and characters and allows for quite a bit of customization. There were a few story points that felt over the top but for the most part it's been good.
