There’s just something uncanny valley-ish about Fortnite that keeps me from playing it. And I think the lack of a cohesive theme (or something along those lines?) rubs me the wrong way. That said, cheers to anyone who digs the game ✌️
@sikthvash I actually like that they’re paring down the roster to those within the Mario universe (while simultaneously adding more characters from the Marioverse). For whatever reason, it always felt weird to me to see races that feature Link, Mario, Miis, and an Inkling. No hate to those who like using those characters—I just prefer the approach of keeping it within the Mario theme
The day that Nintendo stops releasing physical versions of their games is the day that I stop buying much of anything from Nintendo.
I don’t understand why the video game industry can’t operate like the movie or music industry in this regard. If they want to charge us a premium for a physical copy, so be it. But don’t get rid of physical copies in favor of this key card mess
This sounds fun. I’m not a huge collector of toys/figures nor a big fan of superheroes, but I’ll be curious to see these. I’ve always liked the Jakks figures that I’ve bought, too.
Dope. I hope this becomes the trend. Physical media is such an important part of the equation for a good chunk of the gaming / collecting world (me included). Kudos to Marvelous USA ✌️
Outside of a few one-offs (like indie titles that don’t offer one), I seriously think I’ll boycott any game that doesn’t offer a true physical copy (with the full game on the cart). Hoping I don’t have to eat those words haha
I was lucky enough to go to the museum in November and I scored a few streetpasses. They’re still decently easy to get in cities in Japan for those considering a trip. Looks like I just missed out on these, but I love seeing Nintendo show some love to the 3DS in 2025 🤘
@Moroboshi876 I'm glad I’m not the only one who thinks this! It’s one of my fave games on the system, and I can’t help but think about how sad fans of the game (myself included) will be when the servers inevitably shut down. The OG F-Zero is fun and all, but doesn’t compare to 99 in my book.
Maybe 99 could be included as a multiplayer mode (both humans and AI) on the next mainline F-Zero release (assuming we finally get one)? How cool would that be
@burndive maybe I'm tripping, but wasn’t it announced with a standalone digital price that was $10 cheaper than the physical version? And I thought the digital price was $80.
I can’t decide between Barista Coffee Simulator and Barista Simulator 2025… On an unrelated note, I was reminded today that the eshop continues to run wild with silly shovelware.
In case no one else has already said it (I haven’t read through all 127+ comments), but it’s a $90 game if you want the physical edition. $90! 50% more. I wish more publications would highlight this, because a $30 price hike is pretty steep, regardless of if it’s justified by inflation, tariffs, etc.
And I’m happy for all the commenters in Europe pointing out that they can get it discounted and not have to pay the MSRP/RRP, but that doesn’t happen until waaay after it’s released here in the US. Maybe retailers will offer discounts earlier as a result of the higher MSRP this time around?
Anyway, I see the justification for charging more, but it’s gonna translate to me (and I imagine many others) buying a lot fewer Switch 2 games than I have for the Switch 1.
I like the spines! Reminds me of GameCube cases. I’m still trying to decide if I like the red bar across the top (that’s a lot of dead space), but I will say it’s going to be an easy way to differentiate between S1 and S2 games.
Charging a bit less for a digital download has always made sense to me (and I buy 99% physical). But $90 USD for MKW is a tough pill to swallow. Especially when the console itself will be so expensive. Trump’s tariffs driving up prices for consumers is particularly bad timing (I saw one number that said the console would have been around $50 cheaper without the tariffs). All this means I envision buying far fewer Switch 2 games than I did in the Switch 1 generation, which is a bummer because I like the handful of games we’ve seen previewed so far.
I’m not crazy about the art style, and I’m still not sold on DK’s redesign. But I have to imagine this will be one of the first games I buy for the Switch 2. The gameplay looks like it could be fun!
I loved this Direct! But I’m also a huge Tomodachi Life fan. I was beginning to think a sequel would never happen. Literally threw my arms up and quietly screamed when I saw the news at work lol
The lack of release dates is a bummer, for sure. But I’m also A-OK with some of the heavy hitters not coming out until 2026–that just confirms that the Switch 1 will be supported into the foreseeable future, which I think is good for everyone.
Stoked for this! I’m in Oregon and a solid day’s trip by car or train to San Francisco, but that’s much closer than most of the world is to a Nintendo store (so I’ll count my blessings). Plus I’ll take any chance i can get to visit SF or a Nintendo store (I think I’ve been to all but one at this point). I always love Nintendo’s location-specific merch, so I can’t wait to see what they come up with for an iconic city like SF.
Petition to have Nintendo Life let users filter out hardware spoilers (or to at least bury the actual meat of the spoiler in the article or sub headline ) 🙏
For both DS and 3DS games, it seems somewhat realistic to imagine the Switch 2 unit functioning as the touch screen, while your TV would function as the top screen.
Or, and I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone bring up this possibility so correct me if this is somehow impossible, but what if the Switch 2 could be rotated into portrait/tate mode? The screen could be divided into halves, and you could play DS/3DS games right on your Switch 2 in handheld mode. Might be a bit cumbersome, but it would open up the system to two huge libraries.
I’ll preface this by saying I’m a retro gamer (I play plenty of modern games, too) and regularly use old hardware—including handhelds with screens that could be considered archaic by today’s standards.
I think the tech industry has duped many of us into thinking our tech is somehow obsolete or unusable if it doesn’t have the latest and greatest specs, and whatever design cues are in vogue at the current moment. One of the commenters above mentioned obsession with bezels, and I’ll echo that, too: it’s silly that the industry makes such a big deal about them. As long as a new console’s visuals look nice while I’m using it and functions well, I’ll be happy.
I’m honestly way more concerned about how bland the overall design of the Switch 2 is–I was hoping for a little more character and color from the new console. Here’s hoping they release some fun variants and colors, and that the UI will have a bit more personality than the Switch 1. I pine for the days of the N64 and GameCube—so colorful and fun (^:
@neuron123 lol imagine people having different opinions than you! Everyone should only like the things that you like!!!
Also, the fact that the Japanese version is only getting ~10% of the vote (a verifiable beatdown) kinda disproves the point that you’re making. Let people enjoy things. 🤷♂️
I probably tend to choose the North American versions on these polls (that’s where I’m from, so nostalgia might play a role).
That said, I chose the Japanese version this time because I feel like it matches the game’s vibe better than the NA cover. Plus I’m a huge fan of maps/cartography.
Yes!! Bring back a short start-up jingle, along with home screen music. I was honestly disappointed when I unlocked a Switch for the first time and it didn’t do the ‘click’ sound I’d heard in the commercials (tho I do like when it makes that noise when you attach a joy-con).
This older animation-style version doesn’t bother me. It barely resembles the monstrosity that was shown in the new Mario Kart trailer. He still looks mostly like the old DK fans of the series know and love. I’d rather they create a new character than completely change one of their mostly beloved ones.
@Reztobi yeah I totally get it. I honestly love to see “hardcore” games come to Nintendo’s consoles because I think it gives people more options, which ends up exposing more people to the fun that can be had playing Nintendo’s games (even if they’re for kids or whatever haha). I was mostly just griping about an issue I have with gaming culture as a whole (the hyper competitive nature) where people get labeled as lesser for not taking things so seriously. That’s all
@Reztobi gasp The horror! Imagine being called a casual gamer.
lol but man, I miss the days when more people treated video games as a form of entertainment/magic, and not as an obsession with being perceived as “good” at a given game
Oof. I still don’t like the redesign (tho I’m still holding out hope that this is a variant or some other character). DK has always had a little bit of attitude and edginess that the rest of the super Mario characters (excluding Wario and Waluigi) lack. He brings a different vibe, which I’ve always loved (especially from 1994/DKC-era onward). It’s a minuscule thing in the grand scheme of things, but it’s genuinely sad to think about them permanently changing his look and vibe this much. Don’t go, Donkey 😢
Huge Donkey Kong fan here (hence, the name). Not liking this look at all. He’s been perfect since the ‘90s, if you ask me. Hopefully this is some variant or different character (though I don’t know why they’d highlight him over the standard DK in the reveal trailer). That said, I love the look of the other characters so far! Hopefully this is a one-off or something.
I tried pretty hard to avoid the leaks (and mostly succeeded), and was still pretty unsurprised by the reveal. Disappointed by what I’d consider to be a boring design, too. It feels a bit like the Wii U reveal at this point—a slight iteration of a massively successful console. That said, I think the Switch generally has more staying power than most of what the Wii had to offer, and Nintendo’s in a better position to succeed than it was post-Wii.
Of course, it’ll all come down to the games—are there going to be enough quality exclusives on the Switch 2 to encourage enough people to buy it? Most of the people on this site will buy it regardless (myself included haha), but I really have a hard time believing this console will see even a fraction of the sales the original Switch (Switch 1?) did. Maybe I’ll be surprised though! Again, it all comes down to the games and how fun of an experience it is to play.
And just once more because I can’t get over it: the new design is sooo boring. Nintendo, you’ve always been the fun one!! Give us some color, at least. please don’t become just another Sony or Microsoft, spitting out the same stuff that looks like it was designed by a dude who chugs cans of Monster every morning lol (sorry to the Monster drinkers out there but, ya know)
The Two Towers and Return of the King on GBA are both solid games—some of my favorite games on the console. I’ve heard people compare them to Diablo, so maybe check them out if you like that kind of thing
