Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon walked out on stage at this year's Game Awards to announce a winner of a select category and instead presented us with the surprise reveal of Mortal Kombat 11 - the next entry in the long-running bloody and brutal fighting series by NetherRealm Studios and Warner Bros. The game is arriving worldwide on 23rd April.
While no platforms were specifically mentioned by Boon, at the end of the announcement trailer the Switch logo was present (we've grabbed a screenshot for you below). The game's official Twitter account makes mention of the Nintendo Switch release as well. This is a rather big surprise considering a Mortal Kombat game hasn't appeared on a Nintendo platform since the 2007 DS release.
As you can see above, if you pre-order the game you'll get the character Shao Kahn. Below are some official screenshots:
Did you expect Mortal Kombat to be released on Switch? Are you excited for the 11th entry? Tell us below.

I told you guys!
You thought I was crazy!
Unexpected but well played. Your move SNK and to a lesser extent Capcom.
The third party support is getting more and more real.
@Decapre Well, you're a weird Bison clone of Cammy, so some caution had to be raised.
I hope they don't tone down the gore this time. 😂😂😂
Well this is unexpected. Huh.
Okay, this is epic.
Took long enough, but Warner Bros is finally back on board.
Yes Shao Kahn is back. The series was getting boring without him. Also welcome back to Nintendo Mortal Kombat. Now give us a MK9 & MKX port so we could catch up on the reboot story.
Man, I haven't been able to play any MK games since Armageddon on Wii! I'm pretty pumped for this!
This is awesome. Hopefully we get XL on Switch to hold us over. Only mainline Mortal Kombat game I haven't played.
Hope this doesn't get cancelled just like the MKX port for the PS3 and 360. That said, game looks a bit more vivid than X and hoping Noob comes back, still very stinky of WB for doing ANOTHER pre order character bonus for a third time (when nobody liked that move).
My wife likes Crash and I'm all in on MK and that Marvel game.
Not the news I was hoping for, but can't say I don't dig on what we got.
You know Nintendo did something right with the Switch when all the old 3rd party IPs from the Sega Genesis / Super NES days started coming back to Nintendo: Final Fantasy, Final Fight, Mega Man, Doom, Double Dragon, Samurai Shodown, Wolfenstein, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Dragon Ball, Wild Guns, Bubsy, and even Shaq Fu. Now where's my F-Zero Nintendo?
The song ruins this trailer.
Nintendo getting (almost) all the third party games these days. Awesome to see.
Good to see it's coming to all the platforms.
Mmm chunky salsa
This is awesome! Like I said in another comment, between incredible first party games and the best third party support on decades, I think 2019 will be the greatest year for Switch yet!
Finally!!!! No more getting the shaft!!!
@Captain_Toad they have tone down the gore because otherwise the game couldnt run at a stable framerate.
Mortal Kombat...coming back to a Nintendo console after 11 years with MK11. Hmmmmm...
Definitely picking this on switch instead of my pro or x
@JR150 The clue is 7-Eleven, one of my favorite convenience store.
This is the 11th Mortal Kombat entry but is coming to Nintendo's 7th home console, the Nintendo Switch. Also 7 is the lucky number.
Not really my thing ,but never expected this to come to switch. Hope we see injustice 2 be revealed next year
This is huge news for me. I’m a big fan of Mortal Kombat and this was without doubt the best news coming out from the Awards.
I’m disappointed we didn’t get anything about Metroid though...
a pleasant surprise, wonderful
That trailer is vile.
I hate to say it, but I'm pretty pumped for this game. It looks really good, but so did MKX. Before any of you preorder this game, I strongly suggest that you research this studio to see how they've handled all platforms in the past. If they aren't doing the development for the Switch in-house, I don't have the faith in them to get this done, and keep it supported, as much as other platforms. The PC port of MKX was such a disaster that they ultimately gave up and stopped providing the DLC and updates for some time. Unless the initial reviews come out saying this runs flawlessly on the Switch, this will be the first physical game I've purchased just so that I can buy it second-hand.
MK’s always been my fighter of choice, I’m super happy about this.
Since they already established the new characters into the last game, this one should give them a bit more freedom. I see Shao Khan is back, so that's a start.
Yes! Wohooo!! Need to see the collectors edition!
Did not expect a day-and-date Switch version at all.
About darn time its made its way back to Nintendo.
@retro_player_22 *XL (DLC included) lol.
@Paulywally Yeah I meant Mortal Kombat XL. I'm just too lazy to write everything.
Awesome to see the series back on Nintendo. Day one for me. Big fan of MK 9 and X so my expectations are high. I'm not too worried about them making it work for Switch because the Vita versions of MK 9 and Injustice Gods Among Us were very well done.
definitely interested in a switch version.
Let panic button handle switch version!? Warframe is so impressive i would love see panic make their own game from ground up. Bet it be amazing
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm not sure what Capcom is gonna do, but SNK already made their move. King of Fighters XIV is coming to Switch.
[youtube:K2vJaT3QtFQ]
On an unrelated note, SNK has also revealed a new Metal Slug game coming to Switch.
@Tasuki They have to. The Switch can handle only so much gore until it breaks down.
Why is there red sweat coming out of that headless torso?
@Tasuki What do you mean? I thought everyone was getting punched so hard that their sweat was flying off their faces.
@Likethepear I see what you did there 😅
@Koudai1979 came to comment how I'm loving the MK news but you just made my day! LOVE KOF as well.
(Makes up for that heroines game that broke my heart)
Thanks!
Wow. I hope we get a blood code.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I liked some of the older games as a kid, but the newer games have gone overboard with extreme and explicit depictions of violence, often involving characters in skimpy attire.
The U.S. needs to change their attitude towards adult ratings for movies and games so that they are rated fairly, rather than being arbitrarily lumped in with the M rating (or R for movies) for merely exceeding the T (or PG-13) threshold. It seems that virtually anything goes at the M rating, shy of frequent nudity and explicit sexual acts.
Mortal Kombat on the Switch?
"Get over here!"
Sub Zero for Smash DLC!
"...if you pre-order the game you'll get the character Shao Kahn..." I really miss the days when the complete game was there on the cartridge. =
@maruse i was trying my best to hype up the metroid fans in the live chat last night. Somehow I felt it wasn’t going to get shown though.
When you consider there will be 25 million plus Switch consoles out in the wild in 2019 it's not surprising we will see more third party support,if a game is possible on the Switch hardware there is a very good chance of a port, the developers would be mad not to see a return on their investment.
Most definitely my favorite announcement of the night was that this is coming to Nintendo Switch now if only we could get Injustice 2 on Switch that would be epic.
This is dope. Buying for the Switch for sure.
Violence in this trailer look rather balanced and fun. Mortal Kombat X was way too disgusting and exaggerated. It was almost disturbing, it would have been absolutely disturbing if it wasn't something as shallow and mindless as a Mortal Kombat game. This time it looks like they have understood they went too far with X
I'll be getting this for sure.
Call me a wuss but the more realistic (if a game featuring human lizard things and multi-armed gods can be called realistic) Mortal Kombat gets the more I am put off. The fatalities have become far too gratuitous and unsettling for me. Maybe I'm getting old but I just don't enjoy seeing a father gleefully rip his daughter in half whilst she screams in terror (Mortal Kombat's law is f***ed up btw).
Bring back the green blood!
MK on a nintendo system? creazy next year we might see a lot of 3rd party games from dev that where waiting to see how it did
Awesome, day one!
@WCB because Switch sells. It's all about business. If you make sales they will come to you
@Romeo-75 same here and Ed Boon still rocks it like a boss and he's been in the game for longer than most. Day 1 but for me. X was quality.
Having not played a Mortal Kombat game in years, I got MK9 for Vita and loved it. First time I'd really enjoyed a single player mode in a fighter. Picked up Injustice on Wii U and MK XL on Xbone too and enjoyed both. Will get the Injustice 2 Legendary Edition at some point, but would prefer it on Switch to Xbone. Really happy to see this one coming straight to Switch.
@Tasuki This time Sony will...
The ying to smashes yang....
3rd party support is real
@Ooccoo_Jr yeah I’m with you mate. All a little too much. I might pick it up but won’t be day one. Glad it’s getting a switch release. More the merrier and it will sell
@Stocksy Agreed. Always glad to see big name third party support on Switch and I did enjoy the series back in the Mega Drive days, despite being absolutely useless at it. Not for me but I'll still be enjoying Smash anyway.
But soul calibur.......
If this is true this is fantastic news FINISH HIM!
Nice to see mortal combat back on a nintendo console.
Hope they bring injustice too.
I’m so friggin ready. I’ve been hoping for a portable MK title.
Really excited for this. Was always a Mortal Kombat guy back in the day. Hope it’s a well done
Huzzah! Decapitations on the train...day one purchase for me!
Always liked the fighting gameplay but... I really dont like the excessive gore
I hope they offer an optional mode where you can tone that down and disable fatalities in single player. I'd be more inclined to pick it up. That would be a smart move on their part. Given people the option on how they prefer to play. Appeal to more people that way.
I was convinced that Liu Kang was shouting ‘Meandmymummyandmydaddyonabike!’ In MK2 on the SNES.
@JaxonH dude you should prob just play a different game. This is mortal Kombat we're taking about here. Needs to stay savage.
No falcon to show us his moves, no buy. (Please add captain falcon dlc...)
Oh my god this made my day, was not expecting a new mk announcement now I can do my mk release ritual and slaughter my son, my dad and my best friend until no one wants to play with me no more MUAHAHAHA (then I get slaughtered online). Hype. Hopefully I get my main dudes smoke and baraka in this release.
Gonna buy it on my Sega Genesis instead for the blood.
Really the gore is too gratuitous, and just a cover for possibly a poor game. They have strayed too far from the original. Extreme violence and over the top physical mutilation is not shocking anymore and the overuse of it is a hallmark of a poor effort to make it interesting.
Now, Battletoads, there was some great gore.
So funny. Was just talking to my kids a few days ago that I wish they released a mortal Kombat on the switch. And now here we are...
@MsJubilee I second this trailer looks good but this music really doesn't fit it
I adore the reboot, XL and both injustice games so I'm very, very happy that this is happening and it will be on switch.
It was definitely an entertaining reveal. I like Nintendo's approach with 3rd parties on surprise reveals. As for MK I haven't been a tournament player since MK Deadly Alliance and Deception, but I might get back into on Switch.
@aznable sc may get a late port or even IIHD. Once they are off the anime kick that is. They need the sales anyway.
On the Switch, third-party support is improving, I believe this just tends to change. Mortal Kombat 11 is the great divisor. All you need is a COD to break this taboo.
I would love if they included a "Green Blood" filter as an easter egg nod to the long time players
oh yes, we got a 4k game on Switch so fanboys will now cry fowl play......
Well I’ll be damn.. switch is getting third party support in boatloads. Good
Nice, I look forward to pulling my friends internal organs out through their mouths as Ermac , on the go.
Not my thing at all but good to see more support
I adore Mortal Kombat. The last two titles revelled in their sheer stupidity of the franchise. Can't wait. (If only they'd release the original Xbox trilogy on One...)
Nice to see Switch on the list but really haven't e enjoyed the more recent MK games. For some reason they feel less fun with better graphics.
@johnvboy it's at 25 million Switches last October, projected number before the fiscal year ends in March 2019 is around 35 million I believe
@Megal0maniac,
There you go,so there is even more reason for third party developers, with the failure of the Wii U I still find the Switch's success a surprise tbh.
I will definitely be pre-ordering, not missing out on Shao Kahn.
@aznable But soul calibur.......
Sorry buddy, but this just dug Soul Calibur's grave. It was a brutal fatality. Rip Soul Calibur VI, we barely knew thee.
Calling it now. Scorpion/Sub-Zero/Raiden. One of these will be dlc for Smash.
makes sense if it's ue4.
dbz plays and looks great so ue4 seems to be pretty scalable.
Wake me up if Street Fighter 4/5 gets ported.
I won’t play it on Switch (if at all). The switch online experience has been mostly terrible for me (even with 100mbps at home) so I don’t trust this to play that well online. If I got this, I’d just play it on my PS4 Pro
Man... MK is STILL going
My friend is hyped through the stratosphere, but I've only ever dabbled in this series for the fun of it. Ok MK, here I come... again!
@DABYX No problem. The new Samurai Spirits game may also be coming to the Switch.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2018/12/rumour_snks_samurai_shodown_might_be_released_on_switch_in_2019
@Tasuki i kinda hope they do but give us the option to turn it off as a nod to the SNES releases
@Whalehome buy a wired adapter, i have notice that certain wireless routers dont work well with the switch or i should say the switch doesnt work well with certain routers. myself i have a orbi its good but if i move from room to room the switch will not switch access points like every other device i have, i have to actually put it in airplane mode and back again when im done moving...but i bought a ugreen usb 3.0 usb adapter off amazon and it works great and before someone says theres no difference between 2.0 and 3.0 on the switch your wrong i have the hori adapter too and its about 21% slower im on gigabit internet too. the ugreen is also only 20$ at most.
@Tasuki nah sony base needs to worry about that since sony is on a censor happy on their games.
THIS ISN'T METROID REGGIE
@MsJubilee almost literally ANY type of music would've been better than... Whatever this is. Even as a long time fan of hip hop and rap I fail to see ANY appeal in this, while the Def Jam fighting games made it very clear that rap can indeed be very good music to fight to.
With green blood?
I love when devs do this. They reveal this huge, great looking game and they discreetly reveal it's out for switch, almost like they're not assuming people expect most modern games to be on switch. Also, MK11 on Switch? Hell yeah!
The game looked cool, and then some guy starts rapping over it. I'd be more interested, and would have watched the whole thing, but, I'm not going to sit around listening to that, and I won't pick up the game either if it's full of rap music.
Now you all can play on the go MK
@Whalehome blaming your ISP for your bad internet is a pi55 poor example of fanboy. Notice said nothing about the graphics. Just like how I predicted would come to make excuses.
I'm hesitant, what were they thinking with the rap music? That was terrible. Let us pray this game is not an microtransaction watered down mess of a game.
@SwitchForce huh? I’m saying that I don’t like Switch’s terrible connection to the internet. My PS4 works better and that’s why I’d play it there if at all. Not sure why you were talking about graphics...
I'm going to be torn between the Xbox One version and earning the 1,000 or more Gamerscore and getting the Switch version and "FINISHing HIM" on the go.
