thank you nintendolife for that feature interview! good insight on the making of this game! being a Mario Kart veteran myself, I was really interested to see how it all worked so I made the purchase day 1. so far, it’s been great fun creating courses around my home. also love that they kept the drifting (it works great)!! I really hope this succeeds as it is great fun! awesome job to the developers!
also, I just tested outside on smooth concrete and the kart ran fine. the only problem was the sun was bright and I had difficulty seeing the AR layout of the course.
I didn’t reserve this and took the risk of finding one this morning. luckily, I was able to grab both Mario and Luigi! I only own one Switch console but last minute decided to grab both cause I couldn’t pass up in not trying two player live kart with a friend/family members that also own a Switch!!
If I had played these on the NES back then, then this would be an auto purchase for me. But since I only played most of these games in the arcades, these compilations don’t appeal to me. I’m happy with the Namco Museum collection that I’ve had for three years.
Darren, thanks to your choice for GOTD, you have become my favorite writer here at NL by default
I’ve loved the Mario Kart series since the SNES and MK8/MK8D are the best yet. I’ve put in 1000 hrs on Deluxe and have 40+K VR points! My most played game on my Switch by far and my favorite franchise of all time. So it’s no surprise that my favorite game of all time at the moment is MK8D!!
Nintendo Life, you should host another tournament soon!
Most played: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Hours: 795 Games: 66
does anyone else in here actively play MK8D? If so, let me know here in the comments section to perhaps add you as a friend. I still enjoy MK on a daily
I love the Arcade Archives!! I’ve purchased 24 games so far (not including their massive ACA Neo Geo compilation)! Keep them coming Hamster as I keep purchasing them
I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again; MK8/MK8D is the best Kart yet!
Interesting how they combined both Wii U and Switch sales. With the exception of double items, added characters, ultra mini turbo when drifting, and the much needed battle courses (sad that they were excluded on Wii U), MK8 and MK8D are pretty much the same.
Vs Super Mario Bros day 1! I couldn't be happier with the release of these Nintendo arcade gems! And original Double Dragon (non-home console version)!! The Switch is becoming my platform for classic arcade gaming.
I've been playing a lot of NBA2K18 lately so I'll probably play that. Also, I've been playing a lot of old games such as Mario Bros. and Galaga on Namco Museum. I pass the Switch around family gatherings over the weekend and we all compete for high scores! Good fun
I went to three stores searching for a Splatoon 2 Pro Controller today with no luck. The odd thing was that at my last stop there was an actual single Switch system just waiting to get purchased
I know we're being sold the same collection from past systems but the last time I purchased this game was for the GBA. I believe it's available for purchase on the eShop for Wii U. It's a five game collection and has three games that are not in this collection (Ms. Pac Man, Galaxian, and Pole Position). Anyhow, I'll finally double dip
On that note, I turned on the smart steering feature when I let my 9 year old niece play this weekend. She tends to get frustrated with the controls on Wii U but with the Switch she was like "I got first" in every other race. Although I won't use it, it is a great feature to have for anyone who wants to join in the fun.
I really wanted to get a physical copy of MK8D but no stores in my area had any midnight launches. Went to the NA eShop at 2100 and there it was just waiting for me to purchase it immediately.
Personally, if I love a game, I'll get a physical copy. But on the other hand, there's the simple pleasure of having your library with you at all times! I love both formats. Heck, I may still buy a physical copy for a future Switch purchase
Sad to say that I was planning on purchasing physical copy but went to the eShop last night and saw that it was available for purchase and had to get it then and there!
Happy with the game thus far! Haven't jumped on line until I unlock my kart and tire set that I normally use. So, more one player action until I collect enough coins to unlock.
To play with 8 Switches connected wirelessly, are tabletop and handheld mode the only way to connect or can you also use TV mode and connect wirelessly to other Switches that are either on tabletop, handheld, or TV mode?
Off subject, I know Nintendo stated in its Direct that they would be hosting a tournament when the game is released. Any chance of NLife also hosting a tournament?
If it weren't for the comment sections of NLife, I'd never known of fire hopping. Probably explains why I would lose so much when I first started playing on line. Since, my pts went from 7K to 15K in a shorter span. With this, and double items back, it's going to be interesting to see how I perform on line. 9 more days!!! See you on the track!
@NateM94 Totally agree with you with the install base. At least, I'm buying this game betting that it will have a bigger install base.
MK is like FIFA, Madden, CoD, etc. to Mii. So every time a new kart comes out I'm there day 1. Needless to say I'll be purchasing this day 1 as well. And like many of you have argued that it's essentially the same game as the Wii U version, my reason for purchase is simple: MK8 is my favorite game of all time! And the added ability to play this in portable mode and connect wirelessly with up to 7 other Switch players and watch their reactions in person as you steal 1st place is going to be priceless
Good interview. Seems like a very passionate guy who loves his work.
I'm tempted to get it but I feel that I have finally learned my lesson with my eShop purchases on my 3DS/Wii U and Wii Shop. I impulse buy a lot on those systems and would spend less than an hour playing many of those games. My philosophy nowadays is that I think like a kid again. When I would go to the arcade back in the 80's, all I'd have is $2 in quarters to play with each week. Depending on game and experience, I would make each quarter last about 5-10 minutes; 40-80 minutes in total for the $2. So nowadays, If I'm going to buy a $5 dollar game, I'd want to put in at least 100-200 minutes of playtime to get my full value. In other words, the game needs to be worth my time…
Sorry for the off topic subject. So tempted to buy this game, but I feel that I won't put in much time in this game for the price
I just laid my Switch on it's back on a flat glass table and sure enough the system is not 100% flat .
Although I mainly play it on a television, I have been carrying it a lot with me lately since I now have a screen protector and feel more secure having it around Mii. Also, I have a history of not ever buying screen protectors nor carrying cases for all my portable Nintendo systems I've owned. The Switch was the first one I bought a screen protector for. But just to be secure, I may well buy a carrying case as well.
As of now, I'm not worried. The system is fully functional with no problems. As a precaution, I'll probably get in contact with Nintendo to let them know of the issue with my system. My past experiences with Nintendo warranty in regards to issues with older systems has been good so far and I'm sure they'll repair/swap system if needed .
Having the latest and greatest (popular opinion) Zelda, at home and on the go, is the reason for a successful launch month. Hopefully they can maintain momentum.
Personally, I purchased the Switch for one reason: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe! Having my favorite kart of all time at home and on the go is bliss for Mii! See you guys on the track come 28th of April
If it weren't for OoT3D, I'd never purchase a 3DS and would continue to spend $ on games for my iPhone. The 3DS made me realize that no matter how powerful a smart device is, it cannot replicate the joy of precise controlling that only physical buttons and joysticks bring.
The 3DS is an awesome system! I'm hoping the Switch will be the same in years to come
I purchased the original on Wii and also got it for iOS for use on iPad. Personally, I wanted to love the game but just couldn't get into it. I'll pass on the Switch version : /
I have my Switch hooked up to a LAN adapter when docked and (obviously) on wifi when undocked. I tried out the test fire to see how the system performed on line with this game and I must say that it was a smooth experience overall whether docked or in portable mode.
As for Splatoon 2, I'm not a fan of shooters and only bought the first game to try out and support the game. I don't think I'll be buying Splatoon 2 but fans of the game should be excited for this one.
Good info for people that use the system primarily as a portable.
Personally, I've been playing more Switch on my TV than portable. Just today, the battery life went to below 50% for the first time since I've had the system day one
I've had performance issues as well but I only have that when I'm undocked and far away from a good wifi reception. I blame the performance issue in that it keeps searching for wifi and interrupts game play.
Performance aside, the Wii U has a one up advantage over the Switch version with Miiverse integration. It seems at the moment that not a minute goes by without multiple people commenting or posting on there. It's fun to see people's screenshots and commentary of their personal experiences with such a wonderful game.
Personally, I treat my video game purchases like my music purchases…if I really respect and love the album and artist, I buy physical. If not, it's all digital. So if it's a game I will love and cherish, I'm buying the physical copy. Otherwise, it's a download.
One week is not enough time to know how good the Switch, or any new console, really is. Only more time, games, and updates to the system will tell.
I'm sure the UI and eShop will improve with updates such as it did with the 3DS and Wii U. But in due time.
Personally, I adopted the system day one for the sole reason of playing BotW on the go but I've noticed that I've been playing about 95% on the TV. I could've held out on the Switch until 4/28; when MK8D releases!
Just like my Wii U, the Switch will be utilized the most with Mario Kart! When that game releases and I see how well it handles multiplayer and online, then I'll really know how I deeply feel about the Switch.
So this is not the final verdict but a very interesting find.
I've only had the Switch for four days and have yet to see any problems with my left Joy-Con. Then again, I've only used it when in portable mode. While docked to the TV, I use my Pro Controller

Re: Video: The Top Ten Best Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tracks
It's funny seeing this video and reading all the comments how everyone's taste differs when it comes to favorite tracks.
Personally, the tracks that I like are all based on the music; if I like the tune then it becomes a likable track.
With that said, all the way from 1992, my absolute favorite track is Donut Plains 3 from the SNES!
See you all at the starting line
